The Hinsdale Central Devils Hockey team had the pleasure to promote and host the November 18th Sled Hockey benefit game vs the Chicago Hornets Sled Hockey team (http://www.hornetsledhockey.org) (Donations still being taken!). The Hornets program is a decade plus hockey squad dedicated to allowing kids from ages 5-20 with a range of physical disabilities to experience the game of hockey. Their experience and talent was on full display as shifts featured the Red Devils donning hockey sleds for the first time vs. an extremely active and mobile Hornets team. While the Hinsdale Central hockey team made a valiant showing, they were no match for the skillful stings doled out by the Hornets in their victory. Most of all, due to the dedication of many volunteers who promoted the event including Nancy Laskowski and Michele Kapp, the Hinsdale Central Hockey Board of Directors, the Hinsdale Rotary Club, Denise Olson (and Strategic Staffing Solutions), Sin Bin (Hornet Spirit Towels) and so many others, the event was able to raise over $10,000 to further the Hornets mission to provide a no cost wonderful opportunity for these kids to continue to compete on the ice and for many, their only athletic endeavor. Many thanks also to former Blackhawks Peter Marsh who opened the game as the MC and provided a ceremonial puck drop, Steve Konroyd who promoted the game during his TV Blackhawk game remarks and of course the Blackhawks, who donated an autographed stick for the live auction with the entire roster signing. A big thank you goes out to the many other volunteers who can't possibly be named and the many donors for their generous gifts to keep this great Hornet organization going. Thank you also for the students helping to pack the stands and help the Ice Devils support Hornet Sled Hockey. The Hinsdale Central Varsity Hockey team continued their recent winning streak with victories in their last 2 games, defeating Lincoln-Way 7-0 and Plainfield 7-3. Goals vs Plainfield were scored by Chris Stella (2), Athan Tsokolas (2), Stephen Konroyd (2), and Brendan Mahoney. The Red Devils had another decisive victory over Lincoln-Way with Brendan Mahoney scoring a hat trick. Alex Bogdonoff, Charlie Kapp, Joe Dipofi and Lucian Dipofi also found the back of the net while Chris Stella tallied 3 assists. The Junior Varsity team under Coach Volpe has had an active and exciting four game stretch to report. First, on Nov. 11th, the JV Devils faced a stubborn Naperville Central team and both teams were scoreless until the final 3rd period. Naperville scored first in the first 45 seconds of the period, followed with Nick Kubycheck scoring a few minutes later at the 9:37 mark. Naperville responded with another score five minutes later however, with 11 seconds left and with Coach Volpe pulling the goalie - a 6 on 5 rush and a goal from Logan Purcell tied the score! The Devils then went on to win in a shootout 2-1 in an exciting finish. On Sun. Nov. 15th, the Devils faced Wheaton West who they previously beat 8-3. This time, the Devils, despite outshooting their opponents 32-10 and with goals from Sam Stapleton (2) and Nick Kubycheck, were thwarted by some great goaltending, losing 3-4. On Sat. Nov. 21st, likewise the JV Devils faced a familiar opponent in Plainfield who they had defeated twice once in tournament and again in league play. While jumping out to an early lead on goals by Sam Stapleton, Patrick Naphin and Logan Purcell, Plainfield came back to within a goal before Spencer Martin put in the game sealer with 11:06 left in the third and the Devils won 4-2. Finally on Nov. 22nd, the Devils faced the league leading and undefeated York Dukes who they last faced on Oct. 9th and lost 0-6. After finishing the first period scoreless and the Devils coming out extremely aggressive, the teams traded goals to end in a 1-1 tie. The lone goal was from James Usher from an assist by Nick Kubycheck. While disappointing, the Dukes have outscored their last 8 other opponents 44-4, and this was their first regulation tie. The Devils were very stingy on defense, in their back checking and were also led by goalie Libor Gallik, who had an extremely strong game between the posts. The Boys’ Swim and Dive team starts its winter season this Saturday at Naperville Central after a successful Red and White intersquad meet last Friday. Come out and watch them start an exciting season! Go Red! Have a great weekend Hinsdale Central! Mark Kolkman, Ed.D, Principal Hinsdale Central High School Follow us on Twitter @ThisIsHCHS
