kinds of wonderful surprises. Working
on transportation (getting speakers to and
from the airport) may seem like drudgery,
but it’s actually like getting a free oneon-one with the talent and making great
new friends. If you’re more into the social
scene, then working with Hospitality
may be your thing. If you’ve got a power
trip thing going on - then security. The
important thing is don’t be shy. Feel free
to approach ANY board member and we’ll
point you in the right direction and get
you involved. It sounds cliché and I know
you’ve heard it before, but you only get out
of your organization what you put into it.
Convention Confession
Ok, confession time. As your president,
I’m supposed to tell you about the
awesome educational benefits of attending
our upcoming PPANE Convention. The
benefits are pretty obvious by now, but
for those living in a cave somehwere:
Starting with Glen Gray on Saturday
(everything you want to know about digital
PLUS business management. On Sunday,
Don Whipple and Bob Jenks will not
only educate you, they will entertain you.
Trust me, I’ve seen these two in action can you say “Odd Couple”? Greg Stangl
will continue the morning with “The
Psychology of Persuasion” – I’m hoping
I learn how to persuade my staff to do
things MY way. Thom Rouse will be
instructing us on “Visual Literacy”. I can’t
wait to hear his top ten list of developing
creative image ideas. On Monday you’ll
see Carl Caylor speaking on “The Artistic
Elements of Portraiture” - very cool. David
Katz will help us get into the minds of our
brides (now THIS could be scary). And
then Ellie Vayo will help us with the ever
changing (some would say “dwindling”)
Senior Market. Finally, Michael and
Tina Timmons will teach us what we
ALL want to know “How To Make More
Money!” - with the cost of heating this
winter – we’d better REALLY listen!

But one of the REAL reasons I go to the
convention? IT’S A TON OF FUN! I’ve got
some fantastic memories of past conventions.
I remember my first convention in
Sturbridge. At that time, the executive board
sat at a head table and was announced like
royalty. I remember thinking I wanted to be
up there some day - but not for a long time
because - wow - were they OLD! I cringe
to think one of the students joining this year
and going to the convention for the first time
is going to look at me and think, “I’d like to
do that some day when I get old like him”.
If you’re anything like me (and lord

muted, granular color work. Refinements
of this life’s passion lead to his lyrical,
quixotic Mansuesco style of today.
Defying a definable formula, Mansuesco,
much like Impressionism, is a plurality of
looks. An innate quality of light coupled
with a compositional choreography is akin
to his signature style. In a one-man show
at the French Cultural Center, his work
was astutely referred to as “…a synthesis
of observation and imagination blended
with a palette of gauzy colors.” Returning
photographic portraiture to a high art form
is his muse.
Arthur has taught portraiture professionally on three continents, inspiring the budding or
seasoned photographer for 25 years. He is a prolific author, a noted touring lecturer and
has work being shown throughout the United States, South America and Europe. His time
is devoted and divided between personal portrait commissions, private consulting and
education and his on-going experiential art studies.
Jennifer Hudson is one of the “now”
generation of visualists creating beguiling
images that are both artistically stylized
and meticulously crafted. Founder of
Perry Aslyn Photography, Fort Worth,
Texas’ premiere Wedding Studio, and now
residing in Boston with her new Studio,
OliveAvonlea, Her work has been called:
“...a gifted talent, her enchanting images are
inexhaustible invitations to a romanticized
reality.” Jennifer is a rising star in the PPA
ranks, achieving sufficient merits for her
Master of Photography and Photographic
Craftsman degrees in just three years, along with a host of trophies and awards in every
category.
She is in constant demand to teach her unique brand of Vintage and Haute Couture imagery.
Last year she wowed with her innovative approach to Fine Art Portraiture at Texas School,
West Coast School and Image Explorations in Victoria, Canada. With a classical music
and orchestral background, she breathes life into her portraits with an air of subtly that
only inspired thought and a delicate, inventive hand can achieve. Dreamlike influences
and stirring emotional demeanor truly separate her photographs from the mundane. Her
work offers up the drama that dwells in the human psyche.

Course #4 – Charles Maring, Passion, Potential, and Living the Dream
Starting from a small town in Connecticut,
Charles Maring has grown his business
into an internationally acclaimed studio
that photographs many of the weddings,
parties, and events that make the headlines.
Charles, along with his wife, Jennifer,
focus on building lasting relationships with
their clients based on trust, which earns
them assignments that come primarily by
referral.

completely different markets both big and
small, the Marings divide their time between
their Fashion Avenue location in the
heart of Manhattan and their Wallingford,
Connecticut location in the country where
they have a gallery, lab, and production
facility.
The Marings were among the first studios in the world to embrace digital capture and
in-house digital printing, making the team a leading authority in digital manipulation,
workflow, and utilizing technologies to grow a successful business. Published and seen
widely in magazines around the world, personal appearances on national television
segments, an author, and educator, Maring is turned to as an expert for information relating
to the bridal, wedding, and photographic media outlets.

Tim earned his Master of Photography degree at the age of 25, with his Photographic Craftsman
degree following soon afterwards. In Kentucky, his home state, his work has won many awards,
including Best of Show and Master Photographer of the Year several times. Tim scored a perfect
100 on his print “His Father’s Eyes”, breaking all previous records of combined point total. He
also scored a 100 on his print “Hands of Time”, winning the top scoring print in at the Mid-East
Regional Convention. His work can be seen in many Loan Collection publications and Kodak
has recognized his work through Gallery Awards, a Gallery Elite and publication in their Portrait
Book. He has shared his ideas at Kodak Pro-Team meetings, and in 2003, Tim became a Kodak
Mentor. In 2004, he received the Imaging Excellence Award and in 2007, IUSA awarded him the
Gold Level Photographer of the Year Award. Tim is a qualified National Juror, an accomplished
lecturer both in the United States and internationally, and most recently, he earned his ASP
Fellowship Degree. At IUSA in 2007, both Tim and Beverly were awarded the coveted Gerhard
Bakker Award for outstanding photographic education.
Beverly entered the photography profession as a
receptionist at the Walden’s studio in 1980, but in 1988 decided to get “behind” the camera.
In three short years, she earned her Master of Photography degree and her career path was
determined. As she began lecturing with Tim, her Craftsman Degree was quickly earned
and she has never looked back. In Kentucky, she has won many awards including Master
Photographer of the Year several times. In 2006, at the Kentucky Professional Photographers
Convention, she was Master Photographer of the Year and won Best of Show, scoring both the
highest print score and the highest accumulated point total. At IUSA in 2007, she was awarded
the Gold Level Photographer of the Year Award with two entries being accepted into the Loan
Collection. Kodak has awarded her several Kodak Gallery Awards, including being the first
recipient of the Kodak Gallery Elite in 1992, for which she won a Hasselblad camera. Her
work has been published in many trade magazines and she had the opportunity to share ideas
on marketing and selling at Kodak’s Pro-Team meetings. In 2003, Beverly was invited to be
a Kodak Mentor.

stroke feeling its way into the painting. I
sculpt in color and form, continuously
transforming and remolding my image, like
working with wet malleable clay. My experience of the process of creation and how my
artwork moves others is what is important to me”
Jeremy’s class will find you
immersed in a complete creative
experience. You will not only
learn to master the phenomenal
digital painting skills of Corel
Painter with the Wacom tablets,
but you will also be inspired
and empowered creatively at
every level. While keeping his
seminars and workshops lively
and fun, he shares detailed
insights into his artistic process,
workflow organization, painting
techniques and cross-media mixing. Jeremy’s focus is on doing; his students work on
hands-on projects every day of class.
Jeremy was first introduced to using the computer as a fine art tool in 1991, and has been
exploring the digital medium ever since, currently combining multiple media, such as
photography, digital paint, oils, crayon and acrylics. His principal digital painting tools
are the Macintosh computer, Wacom tablet
and Corel Painter software. Within Painter
he can flow seamlessly and effortlessly from
painting with broad washes of watercolor
one moment to applying thick viscous
impasto oil paint the next.

“Through Our Eyes”
Before he was a photographer, Bry Cox
was a musician. He has found that his creative approach to photography is very similar to music, and understanding some key
concepts will help you free your inner creative spirit and produce stunning images,
distinguishing you as an artist.
Bry has a hip and untraditional style that
has been a hit with people like Capitol
Records, musicians, filmmakers, celebrities,
and TV anchors, as well as young brides
and families. He has photographed many
notables including Olympic Gold Medalist
Rulon Gardner, Olivia Newton-John,
Steve Forbes, Donny and Marie Osmond,
and regularly covers events for past and
present governors of Utah.
In this informative and light-hearted course,
Bry covers all three areas required for great
success as a portrait photographer: Creative,
Business and Technical. Bry’s jazz and
fashion approach is not only for weddings,
but for families, seniors and everything
else. This is his entire system from start to
finish including his secrets for getting the
emotion in a portrait, his relaxed style of
posing and lighting, post-production and
fast PhotoShop tricks, as well as those
proven and successful business and sales
techniques that will help you charge more
for your new found skills.

Course #9 - Suzette Allen & Jon Yoshinaga
Intermediate/Advanced Photoshop, The Photoshop Edge You Need!
Course Description: This class will be four days of intense learning:
1) Focus on the vital skills you need for efficiency in Photoshop
2) Learn to retouch like the pros
3) Create exciting composites for albums, folios and marketing pieces
4) Develop your Creative Edge - techniques that will make your work stand out from the competition and get noticed. Students will receive a CD of images to work on, but also have some time to work on their
own images. This exciting class will challenge even the advanced student, but is spoken in
simple English with a down-to-earth style. Suzette’s easy humor and lively approach will
keep you entertained and challenged to go farther!
Suzette Allen has quickly become a well-known instructor, teaching others how to master
the tools of Photoshop. After years of graphic design work and working as a retoucher
at a photo lab, Suzette is quite adept at the skills needed for efficiency, creativity and
great composition. Pair that with her natural teaching style, and you have a winning
combination!
Suzette
has
been
teaching digital imaging
for over 5 years. She
has been an international speaker for Photographic Conventions, as
well as a teacher at many of the PPA affiliated schools. She is the
recipient of the Fuji Masterpiece Award for Digital and Commercial
Photographer of the Year for California in 2002. She is currently the
“Photoshop Expert” on ShootSmarter.com, a resource site dedicated
to helping photographers survive the Digital Dive.
All of her material is relevant to Portrait-Wedding Photographers
because she comes from over 20 years as a professional photographer
and years of experience as a digital retoucher at a photo lab.
Understanding what is truly valuable, applicable and practical for the Portrait-Wedding
Photographer is what makes her classes so popular - AND useful!
Her classes, programs and instructional products
all reflect Suzette’s philosophy for working in
Photoshop: nondestructive methods that are
flexible for creativity, but still maintain the vital
element of efficiency!
Jon Yoshinaga, Suzette’s class assistant and
husband, has been working with her since 2003
teaching Photoshop around the nation.
Having worked in the photographic industry
for almost 30 years, as a commercial, wedding
and portrait photographer, a photo instructor,
as well as in the digital department of a full
service professional color lab, Jon’s experience
gives him the insight and understanding to help
the photographers navigate their way in the new
territory that “Digital” has created.
A self-proclaimed “Techno-Geek”, Jon keeps the class up to speed, troubleshooting
computer and camera problems as well as helping the less advanced students keep up the
pace.

Course #10 – Dave, Jean and JD
Wacker
The Power of Three
NEIPP Corner
by Sal Genuario, Cr.Photog.
NEIPP Executive Director
Before I begin this latest NEIPP Corner, I
want to take a moment to express my entire
family’s sincere heartfelt Thank You to all
of you that have taken time out of your busy
schedules, to attend my daughter’s funeral
or sent your condolences through the many
sympathy cards , Spiritual Bouquets, and
E-mails that were shared with my family at
this very difficult time, these actions were
both welcomed and appreciated.
The class will cover how the Wackers
market to high school seniors to get them
to schedule appointments, followed by the
pre-session consultation, the actual indoor
and outdoor session, sales, the workflow
and final finishing of the images and
delivery.
After a week with the Wacker family,
the students should have the skills and
organizational training to conduct a
profitable high school senior business.
The course will be aimed at the average
high school senior in middle class America
where the majority of photographers live.
Well, as all of you know by now, the PPANE
Convention will be held this month, and the
convention committees have been working
very hard to make sure your attendance will
be educational and rewarding. Let us not
forget that special New England camaraderie we are known for, a gala celebration is also
planned.
The Trade Show this year is a sell out, it’s going to be fantastic. Again this year NEIPP
will have a booth. There will be some new faces in our booth this year, Wayne Tarr,
Vermont Trustee, Vic Dvorak, Rhode Island Trustee, Donna Just, Maine Trustee, John
Beesley, our Canadian liaison, some familiar faces, Diana Mirasolo, Massachusetts

Dave, Jean and JD drawing on their
family business experience of 102 years.
Demonstrations with live models are
followed by an opportunity for students to capture their own images. Students work will
be critiqued daily.
Among the topics to be covered are workflow from image processing to final prints,
demonstrating a workflow that is fast and efficient so you can get your life back; extensive
use of Photoshop tricks and short cuts that will produce a product superior to your

News from Century Color
Forty years ago, a visit to the local ice cream parlor allowed you a limited choice in flavors and toppings. Today, the flavors and toppings
are endless, and everyone in the family likes something different.
The same can be said of the photo industry. Forty years ago, color film was the new and improved technology that professional
photographers either embraced or denounced. But whether or not you preferred color or black and white, there really was only one option
when it came to proofing. After the film was processed photographers had a choice of 4x5 or 4x6 proofs for their customers to view.
In the digital world, this has all changed. Whether it’s a wedding, Bar/Bat Mitzvah or portrait session, Century Color provides several
choices when it comes to presenting your work to your customers. Of course we still offer the tried and true traditional proofs, but as
digital technology has allowed wedding and event photographers to capture upwards of five hundred images per job the traditional
method can become costly and time-consuming.
For these situations we offer three options that can save you time and money and still provide your clients the opportunity to see all of
their images in one place. First up is the spiral bound “event book”. Event books are printed on photographic paper and offer viewing
capabilities as well as doubles as a keepsake. Century Color has several cover and page designs available that will compliment any
session. Another possibility for showcasing proofs is the double-sided proof book. This is the most economical version because we can
print on both sides of the paper. Since it is a press printed product, the dot pattern helps protect your images by preventing scanning
and copying. The third option is online hosting. Century Color has recently added ImageQuix online services to its ecommerce sites.
ImageQuix and The Portrait Connection share some common features but we feel the added features in ImageQuix will enhance
the flexibility in posting events.
One the of most impressive features of ImageQuix is the ability to control the expiration date of your events and the choice to
reactivate them at anytime, giving you the flexibility that you need for special offers and promotions. Your clients can save favorite
images in their shopping cart making it easier for them to go back to purchase their images at a later time. ImageQuix customizes
your online event window to include your logo and website background colors, creating a seamless transition from your website.
Your customers feel secure because it looks like they’ve never left your website. You also have the freedom to organize images,
customize orders and copyright all images with your studio name. ImageQuix gives you two ways to fulfill your orders:
• Full Control--you receive the order and process the payment. You then download the order and submit it to
Century Color Lab using Century Color ROES
• Full Service-- ImageQuix receives the order, processes the payment and sends the order to Century Color for
printing. After the order is completed, we can return it to you or drop-ship it to your customer. ImageQuix charges
a 12% commission and a 3% credit card processing fee to complete a Full Service order.
There are no yearly, monthly or sign-up fees and uploading your first order is free, so download the program and try it today!
Beyond proofing and traditional print sizes, Century Color also offers a wide variety of specialty products to enhance any package.
Our in-house designers have just added dozens of new designs to our folded cards catalog, so drag-and-drop ordering through ROES
is a snap. We have also added new My Notes designs into our ROES catalog. These charming notebooks are perfect for offering as an
incentive or an add-on to top packages. One of our most exciting new products is the soft-cover, press-printed book known as “My
Books”. These books can be easily ordered through ROES, and with all of the templates and background choices we offer, no two books
will ever be the same.
In addition to all of these new products we are also offering album print and bind services. Century Color has teamed up with three
high-quality album companies to offer you more album options. We will be offering flush-mount and peel-and-stick albums from
Finao, Capri and White Glove. You can build the album pages using the editable templates in ROES. There are multiple sizes and
cover options to choose from, so designing a beautiful album for your customer is a breeze.
Back in the days of optical printing it was nearly impossible for labs to satisfy special requests. Today, we can print almost any size
and accent it with any graphic. Years ago, 60% of our business used to be “develop and proof”, now we have to replace that with new
services and product offerings. The whole industry has changed so much that photographers have realized taking pictures and offering
an album is no longer enough. You need to be offering more than just the album. Century Color wants to help you by making popular
products like save-the-date cards and personalized thank-you cards easily available. These are just a taste of the products and services
that Century Color can offer you and your customers. Visit our website at www.centurycolor.com to see all of the available options. Give us a try today; you will be happy that you did!

“Through Our Eyes”
Editorial
The BIG Weekend is Almost Here!
The 2008 PPANE Convention is only a few days away, and for the first time in more than
30 years, I won’t be there. Because of a conflict with a family wedding in Arizona and a
goodbye party for my daughter who leaves shortly after the convention to study in Israel
for four months, I just won’t have time to make the four hour drive to New Hampshire.
Even though I don’t attend all of the programs, I still enjoy the conventions. I continue to
learn from my mentor, Roland Laramie, and always look forward to working side by side
with him in the Registration Booth. Roland IS PPANE; as our Executive Director, he is
what makes our Association run so efficiently.
Tom Hurlbut has brought a great lineup of talent to New England. The weekend kicks
off with the Pre-Convention Workshops with Glen Gray on Saturday. PPANE’s own Don
Whipple and the inimitable Bob Jenks open up the Sunday programming at 7:00 am.
Not only will you learn, I guarantee that you will thoroughly enjoy this two hour program
(and I also guarantee that the time will fly by). With Greg Stangl wrapping up Sunday
morning and Thom Rouse coming center stage in the evening (and the Trade Show in
between), it is going to be a great day! Monday belongs to Carl Caylor and David Katz
in the morning and Elle Vayo in the afternoon (and the banquet at night). The convention
culminates on Tuesday with an all-day program with Michael and Tina Timmons.
I will miss the programs (at least some of them), the Trade Show and the Print Competition;
more importantly, I will miss the camaraderie. I have made many friends at PPANE
Conventions since 1976 and I always look forward to seeing everyone at our once a year gathering. I have one request; I want everyone
to raise a glass and make a toast (and if you do not imbibe in alcohol, raise a glass of water, ice tea, coca-cola…). The toast is not for
me, but to honor our dear friend, Len Levy, who passed away this year. Len was Mister NEIPP and an integral part of PPANE. His “true
stories” will always be missed by all who knew him.
I wish you all a SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION! Have a great time, have fun, learn a lot and buy from our vendors. When you return
home, don’t sit on your new-found knowledge; apply it immediately before it goes stale in your mind. PPANE makes good photographers
GREAT photographers. PPANE is not just another photography association, it is a family. Take care my brothers and sisters, I’ll be
thinking of you September 13-16.
PPANEly,
Lens Stops
Congratulations to Ira Nozik (Bloomfield, Connecticut) on being featured in the August
issue of Hartford magazine.
We are happy to hear that CPPA Past President Paul Korker (Chester, New York) has
recovered from surgery. Paul reports that he felt better the day after surgery and went
back to work rescheduling appointments in both his Connecticut and New York studios.
Word has reached the northeast that Juliet Newman has passed away at the age of 95 in
Florida. She and her husband Irving, Past President of CPPA and PPA, operated a studio
in Greenwich, Connecticut for many years.
PPANE’s heartfelt sympathies go out to David Sedman (LustreColor) on the recent
passing of his mother, Toby Louise Sedman, of Brockton. Donations in memory of Mrs.
Sedman may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham,
MA 01701.
