Laura Ivey Operations Administrator Payroll and Human Resources I grew up in Branchburg, New Jersey, a small town full of corn fields and cow pastures. There, I attended college and earned my certification in Early Childhood Education. I worked in a day care center from high school until my oldest son was born. I wanted to still teach and stay home with him so I opened a Family Day Care Home where I cared for 8 other children, as well. Our family moved to S.C. in 1993 when some of my relatives were migrating south. I continued to work in Family Day Care until my youngest began kindergarten. Most of the children I cared for had grown and it was time for a change. As a single mom with 4 children at that time, I needed something more reliable – And I really wanted paid vacation days!! I started working for Briggs Equipment as an Administrative Assistant. I had never held an office position before and this was a good learning experience. I was with the company for 5 years before they closed their doors. Hired by Boykin Contracting as their accounting and payroll assistant, I began a journey! In my previous job I touched upon those departments but we were a small branch and I had the corporate office in which to report. It wasn’t long before changes began and I took over as payroll coordinator then added the HR department, continuing to assist with our accounting department. I continue to learn new things everyday with the help of some great co-workers and, of course, the SCAPA. I joined the chapter about 2 years ago, eager to broaden my knowledge in my career. I am hoping to take the CPP exam next year, if I can actually find the time to study. I am extremely busy outside of work with my new husband (of 5 ½ years) and our 6 children. My oldest, Brandon, is 22 and living in Greenville. My 19 yr old son, Jared, is in the Navy attending Nuclear Power School in Charleston. My son, Devon, and step-daughter, Sarah are both 16 and rising seniors. My step-son, DJ, 15, is looking forward to 10th grade. Tanner, my ‘Baby’, is 13 and will be in 8th grade. We spend most of our time following the kids around with their activities. Sarah is involved in dance and drama. DJ was on his school’s soccer and basketball teams. Tanner plays baseball nearly year round and has taken us on many adventurous trips with his All-Star and travel ball teams. As a stress release, I began running about 2 years ago. I worked my way up from a brisk lunch time walk to jogging between 2-5 miles daily. I believe 1979 was the last time I ran a race for time- until this year when I entered the Charleston Bridge 10k Run on a team named ‘Call Me a Cab’. I am proud to say that I finished that race in 1:07 – well ahead of some of my much younger co-workers! My husband and I enjoy camping and hiking, although we don’t get to go as often as we used to. I love to cook, but hate to clean. We host big parties for our friends several times a year, which gives me the reason to prepare way too much food. Plus, it’s the only time I can get the kids to give the house a good cleaning. IF I have any Me time, I take pleasure in spending it on the beach, reading a good book with a glass of wine! Although I am enjoying the position I hold right now, I consider this one more step up the mountain of life. I have not yet decided what I want to be ‘When I grow up’. When I figure it out, I’ll be sure to let you all know!!! Hope you had fun at the Carolinas Payroll Conference We will see you next November! November 7 - 10, 2012 Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort www.carolinasconference.org Get started now for National Payroll Week 2012, September 1-5 Request a Proclamation How to Lobby for a City or State Payroll Week Wouldn’t it be great if everyone in your city and state joined the NPW celebration? Simply ask your mayor and/or governor to issue an official “National Payroll Week”proclamation –it’s easier than you might think! 1. Begin by contacting your mayor or governor’s office for information about the procedures for enacting a proclamation. This is not an uncommon request, and most city/state officials have very simple procedures in place for the process. Ask the person to whom you speak if he/she will be your contact through the process. If not, obtain the name and phone number of the person with whom you will be interacting. 2. Be sure that the week you request is the same week in which Labor Day falls –that’s when National Payroll Week takes place every year. 3. Your proclamation request packet should include the following: A letter explaining your goal in encouraging a city/state payroll week Sample language for the official proclamation Information about National Payroll Week Information about the American Payroll Association Ask your contact if there is any additional information needed to complete your package, and find out where you should send your completed request packet. Once you’ve sent your packet, maintain correspondence with your contact by following up within two weeks to determine the progress of your request. Ask when a decision will be made and when you can expect to be notified. Once your proclamation has been adopted, be sure to write your mayor or governor, and anyone else who helped you through the process, and thank them for their assistance and support!
