WELCOME
Dear friends and guests, welcome to the
island of vitality!
Enjoy the fragrant island of hospitable hosts and
uni que natural treasures!
Lošinj was recognised as one of the first
holiday destinations on the Adriatic as early
as the 19th century. Because of the climate
and abundant vegetation, as well as top
quality air and sea water, we continue to build
Lošinj's holiday story in the 21st century!
ABOUT LOŠINJ
You will realise that on every step of the
way we try to justify the trust that has been
given to us in the past. Many rewards and
recognitions in both Croatia and abroad show
it the best.
We wish you a pleasant stay on our
archipelago and we are sure you will take
many nice memories with you, and hopefully
wish to return soon to the island of vitality!
The island of Lošinj is a part of CresLošinj archipelago in the Kvarner Bay.
It comprises 36 islands, islets and rocks and
its size makes it the greatest archipelago of
the Adriatic.
The town of Mali Lošinj spans over the island
of Lošinj, south part of the island of Cres,
and islands of Susak, Unije, Ilovik, Male i Vele
Srakane, as well as some islets.
It comprises a total of 14 settlements: Belej,
Ćunski, Ilovik, Male Srakane, Mali Lošinj,
Nerezine, Osor, Punta Križa, Susak, Sveti Jakov,
Unije, Ustrine, Vele Srakane and Veli Lošinj.
Mali Lošinj is located on the south side
of Lošinj Bay and it counts about 7000
inhabitants making it the greatest insular town
in Croatia. It is also an important nautical
destination because the island is located on
the waterway between Istria and Dalmatia.
On 11th November, the locals celebrate St.
Martin, the patron saint of Mali Lošinj which
also marks the day of the town.
The origins of Mali Lošinj date back in the 12th
century when 12 Croatian families arrived to
the island. They settled on the east side of the
island in St. Martin's Bay and their primary
economy was based on animal husbandry and
farming. With time they discovered fishing,
seafaring, and shipbuilding. However, it wasn't
until the 19th century that the golden era
of the island began. Thanks to the sea and
seafaring, and later tourism, Lošinj turned a
new page in its history.

Apoxyomenos – croatian cultural pearl
The Croatian Apoxyomenos, a great bronze statue recovered on the east coast
of the Adriatic, is the most preserved such statue anywhere in the world. It was
discovered by a Belgian tourist in 1996 in the deep blue sea between the islands
of Vele Orijule and Lošinj. It is a unique ancient bronze statue from either 2nd
or 1st century B.C. by an unknown author, and its home is set to be Kvarner
Palace in Mali Lošinj.

NATURAL CHARACTERISTICS AND...
POSITION
In the ancient times the islands of Cres
and Lošinj were one island with common
name Apsyrtides according to the
legend of the Argonauts. The Romans
dug through the island at its narrowest
point, near Osor, in order to facilitate
access to the open sea. Today there is
a bridge connecting Cres and Lošinj.
AREA
By its size, Lošinj is one of the biggest islands
in the Adriatic. Its total area is 74.37 km².
RELIEF
Relief of our island is very dynamic. The
north of the island is made of calcareous
cliffs, and the mountain of Osoršćica with
its peak Televrin of 588 m overlooks the
island. The middle part of Lošinj is marked
by a well-indented coast, while the south,
just like the north part, is a bit higher. The
coast of Lošinj is considered one of the most
indented in Croatia and it is almost 113 km
long. Among many bays, the biggest and the
most protected is Augusta Bay, the port of
Mali Lošinj. We are also proud to say that it
is one of the most protected natural ports in
the Adriatic and favourite among sailors.
6|7
NATURAL BEAUTIES AND...
CLIMATE
Our archipelago is one of the sunniest parts
of Europe due to high insolation and low
cloudiness. It means that on average we have
7 hours of sun a day, and in summer it can
raise up to 10 hours.
Characteristics of Lošinj's microclimate:
• daily average summer temperature: 23.5 °C
• maximum sea temperature: 23.6 °C
• daily average winter temperature: 7.9 °C
• minimum sea temperature: 11.8 °C
• hours of sunshine a year: 2600
• humidity: between 62 % and 73 %
• pressure: between 1006 and 1014 hPa
• average number of foggy days a year with
visibility less than 1 km: 4
• average wind speed: 3 Beauforts
• precipitation a year: 918 mm
• wind rose: maestral, bura i jugo
PROTECTED SPECIES
There are many protected plant and
animal species on Lošinj. Our territory is
home to 53 plant and 2 marine families,
6 mammals, 10 birds, 10 amphibians
and reptiles and 4 butterflies. Also, we
need to spotlight the always playful
good dolphin; gecko – the omnipresent
lodger of the old houses, and magnificent
guardian of the skies – Griffon Vulture.
Characteristics of Lošinj's vegetation and
sea bed:
• 1018 plant species
• 939 indigenous plant species
• 230 sorts of medicinal and edible plants
• 80 kinds of exotic plants
• 2 park-forests – Čikat in Mali Lošinj, and
Podjavori in Veli Lošinj
• 95 fish kinds
• 71 kinds of crabs, shells and snails
• no poisonous snakes on the island
• one of the biggest colonies of dolphins lives
near Lošinj, roughly about 150 animals.
• April - asparagus, Lošinj onion (wild leek),
and borage
• May - sage, fennel, and nettle
• June - broom, lavender, immortelle, and
ribwort plantain
• July - Bougainvillea, mint, and bladder campion
• August - oleander, medlar, and fig
• September - jujube, grapes, Indian fig
opuntia, and rock samphire
• October - myrtle, strawberry tree,
dandelion, and pomegranate
• November - olive, dog rose, and quince
• December - pine tree, agave, and prickly juniper
Today it is the symbol of the island, but the
thick, fragrant pine tree forest was only a dream
in the 19th century. However, Prof. Ambroz
Haračić, a man of vision and in love with his
birthplace came up with the idea to forest
the island. Thanks to him and the sailors who
brought all kinds of exotic plants to the island,
the green scenery has become priceless for the
development of Lošinj.

HIKING AND CLIMBING
There is only one mountain on the island
- Osoršćica with its peak Televrin (588 m).
Its beauty was recognised in 1887 by AustroHungarian heir Rudolf Habsburg, so why
shouldn't you see it for yourselves? If you
climb to the top, the view of the whole Lošinj
archipelago and islands of Rab, Pag, and Silba
will mesmerise you. In nice weather, it is
8|9
WHAT TO DO?
possible to see the coast of Istria and Velebit
mountain. You can have a break and freshen
up in St. Gaudentius mountain lodge named
after a medieval bishop and saint from Osor.
The lodge is open every day in summer except
Mondays, during the winter for weekends and
holidays only, and by reservation.
If you like extreme sports, 30 minutes away
from the mountain lodge St. Gaudentius
there are 30 routes of difficulty level of 4 to
8, and the maximum length of 30 m. All you
need is a bit of adventurous spirit, equipment,
and basic knowledge. If you are a beginner, an
instructor at the mountain lodge will help you
and the equipment can be rented there too.
There are two ways to Osoršćica – from Osor
of Nerezine.

DIVING
It would be a sin to spend time on Lošinj and
not dive below the surface, especially in our
sea. Lošinj's seabed fascinates divers from
around the world because of its attractive
locations. Why let others talk about the
number of caves, underwater burrs, plains
and cracks they have seen, when you can
experience them too? Witness our rich
underwater flora and fauna. The following
diving centres offer equipment rent and filling
of the bottles, as well as excursions to the
most attractive locations. You can also take a
diving course at the Diver sport centre.

WHAT TO DO?
SPORT FISHING AND ANGLING
We have proven to be the best at it! In 2007
Lošinj's representative Daniel Gospić won
the European champion title in Spain, and
in 2010 he proved his value at home by
taking the world champion title. Why not
learn from the best in a place where the
first underwater fishing competition was
organised back in 1957?
You need to have a licence for fishing. It can
be issued for a day, several days, a month or a
year. You can buy it in sport fishing societies,
Lošinjska plovidba tourist agency and Cesar
Shop in Mali Lošinj. It is forbidden to go
fishing on the beaches and ports in summer.

HUNTING
We follow the trends so our offer includes
a new sport. It is extremely popular and in
recent years Lošinj has become a wanted
destination for hunting because of the quality
of our hunting grounds. Fowl and small game,
wild boar, mouflons and fallow deer in their
natural environment are a sound reason to
come and try it. The season starts towards
the end of the year. If the visitors have passed
the hunting exam in their own country,
they will receive a hunting card from the
representative of the hunting grounds where
the visitor will hunt for the first time that
year. The hunting card is valid for a calender
year and for all hunting grounds in Croatia.

WE RECOMMEND
Sunsets on Lošinj are absolutely divine. Walking
by the sea, you soak the scent of pines and
aerosol in the air, the sun is caressing your face
and tingling your eyes with its warm colours,
and a school of dolphins plays in the sea before
you. The memory of falling in love with these
beautiful creatures is a memory you can take
home with you.
Friendship of Lošinj and dolphins started in
the 80s when a research on good dolphins
in the Adriatic was started. Soon there was
a need to organise an institute for maritime
research and conservation so in 1999 Blue
World was set up in Veli Lošinj.
WE RECOMMEND
The main goal of the Blue World is maritime
research and conservation and education on
the need for protection of marine ecosystem
and endangered species. In 2003 "Lošinj
maritime educational centre" was opened, first
in the Adriatic. Many guests have recognised
its importance and started volunteering in the
Centre to support protection of this marine
mammal. You can also contribute to the
research and protection of dolphins by having
an eco-friendly approach and supporting
environmental protection. In addition, you can
join the campaign "Adopt a Dolphin". If you
wold like to adopt, you can do it personally in
Veli Lošinj or on their website. .
Join us!
Campaign for volunteers of the Blue
World hopes to attract motivated people
who can and want to spend two weeks
in Veli Lošinj and participate actively in
everyday tasks and field work. For more
information please have a look at their
website www.plavi-svijet.org.
The Blue World offers a package to those
who adopt and the yearly magazine
Akvamarin. You will also receive a photo
of the dolphin whose protection you have
encouraged by its adoption.

WALKING AROUND THE ISLAND
Discover and enjoy natural treasures and our rich history, step by step!
MALI LOŠINJ
Malo selo, the original name of Mali Lošinj was fist mentioned in 1398. At that time,
the main economy of the locals were animal husbandry and farming. After centuries of
agriculture, at the end of the 19th century mali lošinj expanded with 11 shipyards. Great sailors
of lošinj now had a better merchant fleet than rijeka, trieste, and even venice. Because of that,
lošinj developed greatly into the centre of the archipelago. Recent history of the island and
the town was turbulent and marked by occupation of the neighbouring countries. Today mali
lošinj is administrative and cultural centre of the island. The main industry is tourism which
could have been anticipated from a town that was acknowledged as a climate sanatorium in
the last century. Top quality of air and sea, rich biodiversity, islands, coves and beaches, paths
and local cuisine are just some of the characteristics of our island's tourism. Its geomorphology
has proven to be very attractive, meaning that it takes only 15 minutes on foot to reach each
side of the island. Accommodation is possible in hotels, hostels, villas, campsites, in private
apartments and rooms, and in marinas.

WALKING AROUND THE ISLAND
VELI LOŠINJ
A picturesque village of colourful façades is located in a narrow bay on the
southeast part of Lošinj. Numerous villas with splendid gardens built in the front row along
the waterside are its characteristics. Although the meaning of the name would make anyone
think that it is bigger than Mali Lošinj, it has around 1000 inhabitants. Still, the history tells us
that it really used to be bigger than Malo selo. Captains, ship builders and the rich lived in Veli
Lošinj, and the nobles spent their winters here. The gardens are home to more than 80 kinds of
plants, while in the archduke Carl Stephen's residence, today's Sanatorium, we can find more
than 200 kinds. On St. John's hill overlooking the village there is a beautiful belvedere. The little
port of Rovenska attracts with its beautiful beach and Mediterranean feel. Veli Lošinj received
"Blue Flower" award in 2008 for the best well-kept town in the Adriatic. The accommodation
is available in hotels, hostels and villas, apartments and B&Bs, as well as in private apartments
and Sanatorium.

• The parish church of St. Anthony the Hermit in today's baroque form, built from 1767-1774
with a great contribution from sailors from Veli Lošinj. The first church was built in 1480 and
its greatest treasure are numerous relics, sacral art and organs by a famous Venetian organbuilder Gaetano Callido. In the early 19th century the church was briefly a cathedral and seat of
bishop Rakamarić from Osor.
• 15th century Tower in the centre. With its thick walls, small openings and being relatively
short, it protected the residents of Veli Lošinj from enemies' attacks. Its image is found on
the coat of arms of Veli Lošinj, and today it is used as a museum and gallery with a replica of
Apoxyomenos and images of a rich history of Lošinj's sailors.
• Church of Our Lady of the Angels from 1510, expanded in 1730 in baroque style. Lošinj's
captains are to thank that the church today is a true little art gallery.
• Church of St. Nicholas from the 14th century, expanded in the 18th century. According to the
legend, it was build by Byzantine monks, Basilians, after their monastery on the neighbouring
islet of Palacol was destroyed.

ĆUNSKI
Located on a hill only 8 km from Mali Lošinj, it used to be the site of one of many
prehistoric hill forts. The agriculture has been the main economy, but ancient fertile
gardens and vineyards have been replaced by olive trees. Apart from agriculture and fishing,
tourism has picked up in recent years. The town's biggest attraction is "torać", the only
remaining oil mill on the island built in 1897. However, there is also an important spiritual
retreat centre Betanija for pilgrims from all over the world. In case you need to go to Lošinj
airport, turn left at Ćunski on the main road coming from Mali Lošinj. Accommodation is
possible in private apartments only.

WALKING AROUND THE ISLAND
NEREZINE
It is situated at the foot of Osoršćica mountain and it was mentioned as a larger
settlement in the 14th century. Nerezine experienced tourism bloom in the 19th century
thanks to Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, Rudolf Habsburg. Once farmers, the recent
history sees the locals turn towards the sea – navigation, ship-building and fishing, as well as
tourism, so it's no wonder that a regatta of wooden pasaras (type of boat) was held here in
1920. However, it was disrupted by the war in 1942. At the initiative of sailing club Jugo from
Mali Lošinj the regatta was organised again in 1954 and along with other water games, it ran
until 1965. The tradition still lives so there is a regatta every year in September where wooden
pasaras compete in three categories - pasaras; guc, gajeta and leut, and batela. Everyone's
invited, of course! This is why Nerezine is the best choice for those who want a mix of urban
and original. Accommodation is possible in two resorts, two campsites, two family-run hotels,
and in private apartments.

OSOR – MUSEUM CITY
Located on the southwest side of the island of Cres, Osor was from ancient times of extreme
importance for the locals and sailors. During that time it was called "Apsoros". The two islands met
here, and today they are divided into two. It is a picturesque little city with a long history of over 4,000
years. Its walls date from different periods. You can see its turbulent past at every step so it is not without
reason that we say Osor is an open-air museum. There is a plenty of evidence to witness settlement in
prehistoric period. However, Osor expanded economically in ancient times and it was a very important
transit point. In municipium of that time (autonomous city council) there were about 5,000 inhabitants. Compared to today's numbers, it would be as if there were 50,000 people in Osor! Now Osor is a
tourist spot that attracts visitors with rich history and monuments, natural beauties, and unique musical
manifestation "Osor Musical Evenings", an event that has been held every year in summer since 1976.
Accommodation can be found in private apartments or two campsites.

In the ancient times, Cres and Lošinj were one island called Apsyrtides. It is believed that the island was dug
and separated by the Romans. The archipelago got its name from Apsyrt, sin of king Eet from Colchis. The king
had a Golden Fleece that Jason wanted. Medea, the king's daughter and Apsyrt's sister, fell in love with Jason
and with her help he got hold of the treasure. He took it to his ship Argo and together with the Argonauts he
fled before the king's son. After a long voyage, Apsyrt caught up with kidnappers but Medea tricked him into
negotiation, and Jason killed him. Medea then cut her brother's body into pieces and threw them into the sea. It
is believed that the islands Apsyrtides grew from Apsyrt's body parts.
St. Gaudentius, patron saint of Osor, was a Benedictine monk and bishop of Osor from 1018-1042. Following
a dispute between nobles of Osor and the Vatican, he was banished to Osoršćica, a mountain overlooking the
town where he spent a year in a dark cave full of snakes. He begged for Lord's mercy to free our archipelago
of poisonous snakes forever. So it was. The legend aside, there are no poisonous snakes on the island, but St.
Gausentius' cave still remains on the way to Televrin, the peak of Osoršćica. Interestingly, Gaudentius fled from
the island to Rome where he died in 1044. And then, one morning about a hundred years later, church bells rang
on their own. A coffin was found floating in the sea below the walls and St. Gaudentius' body was in it. A little
church was built to his name and he was proclaimed the patron saint of Osor.

Located on the island of Cres, Punta Križa is a settlement and the name for the
southernmost part of this island and it counts about 15 hamlets. Although the
economy was based on sheep husbandry, today the locals are active in tourism. Bearing in mind
the richness of fauna, it is no wonder that hunting has picked up in the last couple of years. .
However, this is not the only strongpoint of this destination. Punta Križa offers a rich biodiversity so it is a perfect choice for those needing peace, adventure, and true Mediterranean
scenery. Accommodation can be found in private apartments, a campsite and a naturalist camp.

WHERE TO SAIL?
WHERE TO SAIL?
The archipelago is our treasure. Let's preserve it, love it, an be proud of it!
FERTILE UNIJE
The island of Unije, located east from the island of Lošinj, was populated in the ancient
times to which pre-Roman citadels, wells and villas witness. The name of the island derives from
Greek word "heneios" and Latin"nia" which means field. The island was known during the Roman Empire
for its fertile ground and olives. Also, it is characterised by a well-preserved Mediterranean architecture.
Although second largest island of Lošinj archipelago, there are no cars, hotels or campsites. Accommodation is possible in private apartments only.

SANDY SUSAK
The island of Susak is unique in the Adriatic because of many things. The island occurred
very early on the nautical charts, first under the Roman name of “Sansacus” ili “Sansegus”, which
probably derives from Greek "sampsychon" meaning marjoram. Geologically it is different from
other Croatian islands because it was formed from the sand deposited on a limestone plate. It is
interesting that the island has two villages – Gornje (upper) and Donje (lower). The traces of Gornje
selo go back to the Roman times, and Donje selo was built later, during the bloom of wine growing
by the late 19th century. It is interesting to mention that during the 60s of the 20th century a
great number of people left the island for the United States, a total of 1395 people emigrated. It is
estimated that today, and mostly in the state of New Jersey, around 2500 people from Susak live
there. Because of that, since 1985 we celebrate Immigrants' Day on the last Sunday of July. Susak
used to be known for its indigenous wine sort – trojišćina and its skilled sailors. The biggest treasure
of today's Susak is the archaic language protected as cultural heritage. Apart from that, there are
specific customs and beautiful folk costume in lively colours. There are no cars on the island, hotels
or campsites. Accommodation is possible in private apartments only.

Try it!
You probably weren't aware that Susak is a well-known natural sanatorium. Austrian physician
Ernest Mayerhofer introduced the therapeutic benefits of the island to Europeans. In the early
20th century, Susak was famous for the treatment of children with respiratory difficulties,
allergies, infectious and skin diseases. However, from the second half of the 20th century until
this day, the island has become popular with couples fighting infertility. The reason for this are
beneficial properties of the sand in Bok Bay. We like to believe that some of them have found a
solution to their problems on Susak and finally made their dream come true to become parents.

• Benedictine abbey of St. Nicholas in Gornje selo from the 11th century. "Veli Bouh" (Big God)
crucifix from the 12th century can be found inside. The legend says that the sea brought it to the island,
the Benedictines put it in the church and it was never again taken out.
• Cemetery in Gornje selo – a quiet oasis in summer when the sun lights the tombstones
ILOVIK – ISLAND OF FLOWERS AND LONGEVITY
Located south from the island of Lošinj, Ilovik is known in the first hand because of
the flowers and adult eucalyptus trees. A sea channel divides the island from the islet of
St. Peter that is also specific. This little island is known for Benedictine abbey of St. Peter from
the 11th century, but its cemetery also. Ilovik doesn't have its own cemetery but it is located
on St. Peter. It is surrounded by walls thought to be remains of an old Benedictine monastery.
In recent times, Ilovik has been recognised in Croatia as a place of oldest inhabitants – the
life expectancy here is 95 years and it was supported by Dan Buettner, National Geographic
reporter who worked on his research for seven years. The earliest records of the island's name
"Neumae Insulae"date back in 1071. This island is favourite with sailors, but with other guests
searching for peace and pristine nature. There are no cars on the island, hotels or campsites.
Accommodation is possible in private apartments only.

Between the islands of Unije and Susak there are two islets – Vele (big) and Male
(small) Srakane. Only Vele Srakane are populated, but in winter they count only eight
residents. There are a few houses on Male Srakane but this islets liven up in summer. The only
remaining attractions on the islands are churches – St. Anne's church on Vele Srakane, and
chuch of Our Lady of Carmelites on Male Srakane. These are the only days in the year when
there is a holy service on the islands. If you want to spend your summer holidays on Srakane,

FOR A MORE PLEASANT STAY...
Check whether you have been registered!
To ensure a comfortable stay and make sure you are abiding by the law, we kindly ask you
to check whether you have been registered for the whole of your stay, from the day you
arrive to the day you leave. All providers of accommodation services are obliged to register
their guests, to possess the certificate of registration for each guest in any commercial
accommodation facilities (hotels, apartment-hotels, tourist settlements, apartments,
camps, boarding houses, lodgings for the night, hostels, private accommodation, marinas,
etc.) and to present the same at the request of the guest.
Checking this is important and necessary particularly if you are staying in private
accommodation so as to facilitate quality service, ensure your personal safety and to
disable illegal operation of those hosts who are not registered to offer accommodation.
We care about your opinion
In order to find out what we do well and what needs to be fixed or done differently, we engaged a
mystery shopping agency in 2011 to check the quality of the service on our island. Mystery shoppers
sent e-mails, telephoned and visited accommodation facilities, agencies, shops and other facilities
to get an impression about the amount of information and kindness that the hosts provide. We are
proud to announce that with marks of 83% we are above Croatian level. However, this result has
set us a difficult task to be even better in the future in providing services to our guests. Please feel
welcome to come and share your opinion confidentially because we care about it!

SAIL SAFELY
The skipper of a vessel entering the territorial waters of the Republic of Croatia by sea is
obliged to take the shortest route to the nearest port open to international traffic, in
order to carry out border control formalities, to obtain the relevant official vignette
(sticker) and for the verification of crew member and passenger lists at the Harbour
Master’s Office, or branch office.
The skipper of a vessel which is brought into Croatia by road, or which is moored in a port or in some
other approved location within the Republic of Croatia, is obliged to obtain the official vignette (sticker)
and to verify the list of crew members and passengers (to retain the services of a skipper if required), in
the Harbour Master’s Office, or a branch office, prior to setting out to sea. The vignette (sticker) must be
obtained for a vessel of 3 m or more in length, as well as a vessel less than 3 m in length if its total propulsion
power is 5 kW or more. The official vignette (sticker) is not obligatory for a vessel using only oars/paddles,
regardless of its length (such as a kayak, beach canoe, pedal-boat or similar). The official vignette (sticker)
must be displayed in a visible location on the vessel. Its period of validity is one year from the date of issue.
All foreigners entering the Republic of Croatia on a foreign vessel intended for sports and recreation, and
who intend to use those vessels for accommodation, are obliged to register their residence in the Republic
of Croatia only in the port or harbour in which they undergo border control. If a foreigner crosses the State
border at one of the road border crossings, and is transporting the vessel they intend to reside in, the marina
where the vessel will be launched checks the registration. If the vessel is launched in a small port, the visitor
is obliged to register personally their residence at the police station in authority of the territory.
If you are an owner or user of the vessel longer than 5 m with built-in bunks, you need to pay flat rate
amount of sojourn tax. The sojourn tax is paid at the Harbour Master's Office or branch office for 8, 15, 30 or
90 days, or for a year. The receipt must be kept on the vessel!
The skipper of a vessel due to sail out of the Republic of Croatia is under the must to pass border control
at one of the ports open to international traffic and verify the list of crew members and passengers at the
Harbour Master’s Office or its branch. Having fulfilled his or her obligations, the skipper of a vessel must
leave the coastal waters and the territorial waters of the Republic of Croatia by the shortest possible route.

VISITS NEARBY
Lubenice
The village is located on the top of 378 m high
cliff with a magnificent view of the open sea
and an even more beautiful pebbled beach. A
little village of stone houses was impossible to
conquer during centuries. Today it represents
a true gem of rural architecture. The original
settlement was mentioned for the first time
in prehistoric time, so Lubenice, just like Osor,
nurtures a history of over 4,000 years and love
towards classical music. Traditionally, Lubenice
Musical Evenings are held here in summer.
It is definitely a place that everyone should
experience at least once in their lifetime!
Valun
A quiet fishing village located in Valun Bay. It is
by far best known for Valun tablet, one of the
oldest glagolitic monuments in Croatia, older
than Baška tablet. It originated in the 11th century
and is written in glagolitics and Latin. It was a
part of a tombstone found at the local cemetery
of the church of St. Mark. It is kept in sacristy in
St. Mary's church in Valun. And finally, Valun is
famous for excellent food, especially fish so taste
some during your visit!
Cres
The town of Cres is located on the western coast
of the north part of the island in a well-protected
bay. It is the administrative centre of the island
that comprises 26 settlements. Its history dates
42 | 43
IN CASE YOU NEED IT
back to prehistoric times, but there are also
plenty of monuments from other eras, especially
the ancient times and renaissance. Cres is the
birthplace of a great Croatian philosopher
Frane Petrić and very often host to many sailing
championships. The town is surrounded by olive
grooves and cherry trees, and it is famous for its
city walls, three town gates and city clock.
Vrana
A little village located inland used to be only a
postal office but today it is interesting because
Vrana Lake – the source of fresh water for the
archipelago – is located beneath it. The lake is 5.5
km long and 1.5 km wide and rich in fresh-water
fish. The locals are extremely pleased with the
cleanness of the water. Since the lake is natural,
and the source is yet to be found, there are many
theories how the water comes to the island,
but everyone prefers the legend. The lake is
protected so walking down to its shores is not
allowed without a licence.
Beli
It is one of the oldest settlements on Cres. It is
located on a hill on the eastern coast of the north
part of the island on the site of a prehistoric
hill-fort. Beli is well known for its rich history
supported by many findings, and also for its ecocentre "Caput Insulae" that promotes protection
of Vulture Griffons and island's biodiversity. You
will be charmed by the pebbled beach under 130
m high cliffs. Excellent choice for a trip!
