Their roles are not quite as defined as the hospice nurse or other members of the hospice team. The social worker’s duties vary depending on the needs and concerns of patients and families. My response to their question is a hospice social worker’s primary responsibility is to evaluate the needs of patients and families and assist them in making health care decisions based upon their personal goals. Social workers are essential members of the hospice care team as they support patients and their loved ones throughout their hospice experience by providing a safe place for them to talk about their story and make their last wishes known. Often it is just the presence of the social worker that offers a sense of support to patients and families. skilled in areas such as grief counseling and symptom management. They are licensed professionals trained to work with diverse populations and they are educated on interventions across the life cycle. Our social workers assist with bringing families together whenever possible. They are experts in helping people navigate today’s complex health care system and have knowledge of community resources to assist individuals in obtaining needed services. Our social work staff can assist with funeral planning and support surviving family members with completing necessary arrangements and paper work. These indispensable team members are advocates, teachers, counselors and foremost, very good listeners. Community Hospice employs seven social workers, myself included, who are engaged in almost every aspect of our organization including administration, direct patient care, program development and education. These individuals receive specialized training in end-of-life care and are g Warm Regards, March was designated as “National Social Work Month” and our social work staff was honored with a luncheon as our way of saying “Thank You” for caring so deeply and serving our patients and families in a special way. We are fortunate to have these professionals as part of our team at Community Hospice and appreciate the important work they do. Mrs. Steen is a licensed funeral director with Steen Funeral Homes, and much like Community Hospice employees, is helping to take care of families during one of their most difficult times. Mrs. Steen and her husband, Marshall, have been instrumental in restoring several historic downtown properties including The Old Post Office, Steen’s Antique Emporium, L-Style Salon, and The Old Newsstand. In addition to her service as the Vice President of the Community Hospice Board of Directors, Pat is also involved with the Paramount Women’s Association, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Auxiliary, the Dining with the Past committee, is past president of the Ashland Lions Club, and a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She has three sons. In her spare time, Pat enjoys camping, reading, family time including her three precious German Shepherds. With so many projects and commitments, we are pleased that Mrs. Steen also sees the importance of Community Hospice’s mission and chooses to serve with us as a supporter and Board Member. Thank you! Our volunteers provide a variety of services to our organization and our patients. They sit with our patients to provide caregivers a few hours of respite, visit patients in the nursing homes, serve as a greeter/receptionist and provide hospitality cart goodies at the Care Center, provide grief support to our families, offer spiritual care and music enrichment, work at the office performing clerical duties, sew many quilts to provide comfort to patients, shop for supplies, and so much more. We are honored to have more than 200 volunteers giving of their time and talents to our organization. Here are just a few we honored this year. Community Hospice recognizes this also and our bereavement counselors offer numerous options to help people deal with their loss. Whether it’s the follow-up phone calls or mailings we provide to our families, a six-week support group, one-on-one counseling, a specific group program, or our children’s summer camp, all our bereavement services are available to anyone who has suffered a loss, not just those who have been served by hospice. For many years, we have been offering an on-going Men’s Support Group every Wednesday afternoon. The men gather each week with Community Hospice Chaplain Randy Tate as the facilitator to talk about their loss, to share stories, to learn coping skills, to know they are not alone in their grief. Some men come for just a few weeks, others for several months or more. It is tailored to their needs at the time and the topics that would most benefit their situations. purpose. During a follow-up phone call from one of our bereavement counselors, they suggested Don visit the Wednesday afternoon Men’s Group. Don, who is an active volunteer at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, said the group helped him move on, to get back to living. Steve Wilson and Don Kemper both say their lives are different now but are thankful for the bereavement services of Community Hospice. They want other men to know it’s okay to hurt, to cry, to grieve, to ask for help, and to move on with their lives. For more information about our Men’s Support Group or any of the other bereavement services, please call us at 606-329-1890 or 800-926-6184. Steve Wilson is one of those men. A man’s man. A construction worker. A tough guy. Until his wife of 35 years, Jean, died two years ago in her fifties. Jean had numerous health issues and Steve knew she wasn’t feeling well that night. Within hours she’d had a massive heart attack and was gone. He was devastated. Lost. Depressed. Didn’t care if he lived or died. Then Steve saw a newspaper article about the Community Hospice Men’s Support Group. Although it was hard, he picked up the phone and called for help. He says it is the only thing that got him back on track. This group let him know he was not alone and that there were other men who’d experienced a similar loss. He was able to tell his story. Now Steve is doing better. He has a new job and is beginning to date again. He’s not sure he’s ready for anything more, but he does know that he can still call or visit when he’s having a bad day, needs a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. Don Kemper’s story is different but his pain was just the same. Don’s wife, Betty, had been ill for many years and he had been her caregiver. Then in 2013, Betty was referred to Community Hospice and spent her last days at the Care Center. After taking care of her for so long and having done everything together for 57 years, Don had not only lost his companion but also his 6 Community Hospice h107817-Candlelight.indd 8 4/17/15 12:20 PM Grief by Mary Roberts Schaefer As my loved one was leaving my life, she arrived without warning. At first she would come and go. Now, she’s my constant companion. If I don’t acknowledge her, she lets me know she’s there. I no longer try to control her. I just let her be. I welcome her and allow her to take me places I need to go. Initially I feared her. I embrace her now. I’ve come to accept that the same God that created me created her. I understand now how essential my journey is with her. She can be subtle one minute and overwhelming the next. Her existence while abstract is tangible. When tempted to ignore her, she prompts me to face my reality. She is all encompassing to me. She can be spiritual, mental, physical and emotional. She can be so predictable and other times surprise me greatly. She convinces me that a broken heart, however painful, will not break me. She reminds me to accept what is and to live in the moment. She is real to me in a surreal way. Time spent with her is not wasted, but precious. She has taught me it’s possible to hold on and let go. She has shown me that while people die, love doesn’t have to. Although I didn’t invite her into my life, I’m grateful for her presence. When we part, she will have left her mark on my soul and touched my heart in a profound way. My life will be forever changed because of her and my willingness to let her stay as long as she needs to. Mary Roberts Schaefer lost both her mother and stepfather under the care of Community Hospice in 2014. Mary utilized and benefitted from our Bereavement Services and shared with us this poem she wrote during her grief journey. Community Hospice h107817-Candlelight.indd 9 7 4/17/15 12:21 PM CAMP NABE…Looking for Campers & Volunteers As adults we know that dealing with the death of a loved one can sometimes be more difficult than we anticipate. Imagine being a child who has never experienced that loss. It could be overwhelming. Children simply don’t have the knowledge and coping skills to deal with grief. Community Hospice can help. Our children’s bereavement camp, Camp Nabe, is a three-day summer camp for children ages 8 to 16 who have experienced the loss of loved one. It may be a parent or grandparent, an aunt, uncle or close family friend. And they do not need to have been served by hospice care for the child to attend. Camp Nabe is June 16-18 at Bear Creek Lodge in Rush, Kentucky and there is never a charge to the family. The camp includes all the same fun summer camp activities but we incorporate a therapeutic value in each event. Each child is paired with a “Big Buddy” who serves as their one-on-one companion during the camp. We are always looking for additional volunteers so we can accommodate all those children who apply. Volunteers must attend a special threehour training session. If you know a child who would benefit or are interested in volunteering, please contact our Bereavement Department at 606-329-1890 or 800-926-6184 for an application or additional information.
