Mariveles Vice Mayor Turing Isip attends to the concern of a barangay captain at the town hall on Monday. --butch gunio By Butch Gunio MARIVELES, Bataan -- With the plight of hundreds of commuters in this industrial town in mind, the Mariveles Sangguniang Bayan immediately acted following the enforcement of the order prohibiting the operation of buses plying the Balanga-Mariveles route, of which franchises were either recalled or not renewed by the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LT- FRB). A 2013 LTFRB order implements the phasing out of passenger buses and mini buses whch are 15 years old above. Around half of the about 260 units of bus and minibuses plying the BalangaMariveles route were affected. Vice Mayor Turing Isip and SB chairman of the committee on transportation Angel Sunga recently led a consultation meeting with the operators and drivers of buses and minibuses in Mariveles to discuss the situation. Provincial Board Member Peping Villapando, chairman of the committee on transportation, also attended the consultation. Isip and Sunga urged bus operators and drivers to ensure the continued transport service of commuters despite the drastic reduction in number of plying buses. Hundreds of commuters, mostly workers of lo- cators inside the Freeport Area of Bataan, travel daily to and from Mariveles. “We have already adopted a resolution to help the displaced buses at least during the transition period,” Sunga pointed out. The municipal councilor also revealed the plan to talk to concerned officials of Orion and Limay regarding the plight of commuters since buses playing Balanga-Mariveles route also pass through the two towns. • CDC, CILA job fair 4,000 careers up for hires 254 applicants By Charlene A. (PR) • 4 OPINION Headline Gitnang Luzon APRIL 29, 2014 EDITORIAL Laboring on Labor Day BECAUSE it’s Labor Day on Wednesday, most offices will be on holiday, its workers on a one-day break. But really, is there a “holiday” for most workers? Labor Day is meant to be a holiday for workers to “reflect” on their lives as, well, workers. But see, there will be workers at work on May 1. There will be workers who will get ready for work, workers who will be stuck in traffic on a work day. In short, there will be work on this no-work day. Precisely... they will be laboring on the labor of their lives during Labor Day. Don’t get us wrong, because there is nothing wrong with working on Labor Day. There are just industries who don’t really follow the country’s holidays because these businesses need to work day-in, day-out, 24/7. Lucky for those who can kick back and relax during this day and spend time with their families. A good movie, an outing, or just sleeping all day would be more than welcome. But what does it really mean to work for the average Filipino? It means working eight hours a day, five or six days a week, to put food on the table. It means, for some, working two jobs because their kids are going to college. It means working overtime, because every cent counts, so long as they can support a sick parent, sibling, or child. Will there be enough set aside for the future? Not much, that is why Filipinos keep working even beyond retirement age. And then when they retire, they can use their benefits to pay off debts incurred while they were still mere workers. Such is the labor of life of our dear workers, such is the hard work they put in for their families. So on May 1, Labor Day, let us honor the Filipino workers who have helped uplift the country’s economy and have helped make this country a better place to live in. I say yes, if indeed he has the support of his constituents for doing good as city’s chief executive no matter how smaller the battle field his political opposition will just have to maneuver as a result of the proposed lone district. Was the lady Councilor Morales aware of that or does she know something we don’t? Why raise Clark as an issue in the proposal for the lone district? It is the timing. While it may be good timing for politicians it is bad timing for our desire for development. The importance of Clark as an alternative gateway and investment hub is steadily being eaten up by more aggressive interests proposing other sites. Congressman Yeng’s twin bills on Clark remain the strongest effort to match them. If he will not be able to pass these twin bills then passing a less urgent bill on political accommodation would not look so good an accomplishment in his first stint in Congress. And definitely not good for the province.• “ Why raise Clark as an issue in the proposal for the lone district? It is the timing. I would rather turn the channel where I might learn or gain information, instead of focusing on the lead actor’s sufferings. I abhor waiting for the character to learn the truth. Twisting the story is what I hate most. And of course, the long line of commercials; I loathe it when most of the time it is consumed by product endorsements instead of the storyline. The long stares made by the characters just to keep the audience’s eyes glued on their television sets and the ignorance of the main characters make me fall on my seat, cursing and screaming because of their stupidity. But now, things are different. Ever since my mother in-law decided to stay with us for the time being, I could not literally watch my favorite channels. One channel dominates our screen from 6 pm to 10 pm. I have no choice but to watch every teleserye with her. My perspective has changed with a drastic twist. I no longer find the heavy dramas a bummer and to my amusement, I find myself hooked, and patiently waiting for the next scene to unfold. The “ Legal Wife” is worth the wait. Every scene is a revelation -- a take, yet can we blame or even stop two people from falling in love at the wrong time and place? It is not our business to meddle but given the conventional circumstances, we find it on the wrong track to a perfect relationship. People will get hurt and eventually will lead to arguments and again they are back to square one. The husband will choose to go back to his wife, if she still wants him and will try to work things out. The mistress will wait again for a knight in shining armor to save her and give her a castle where she will reign supreme. I agree, no one is perfect. That there is no such ELLEZ J. Be not afraid.” Sabi nga ng isa sa kanyang mga manunulat, “Almost immediately, the conquerors decapitated Polish society, killing the intelligentsia outright or sending them to concentration camps. All distinctive forms of Polish culture were cruelly suppressed, and the church was actively persecuted.” Sa harap ng mga pananakot, mga manunulat, “John Paul II was standing athwart the Communist establishment and speaking for God, freedom, and human rights. In doing so, he proved himself one of the most courageous figures of the twentieth century”. President Obama, in his memoir entitled “Dreams from my Father”, recalled how his Indonesian stepfather taught him how to eat exotic foods, including dog meat. It may be taboo for anyone who is not Filipino and for animal welfare advocates to eat dog meat, but I find it interesting to note that many Filipinos, especially those living in Baguio City and other towns in the north like to eat the meat of what we consider as “man’s best Alvin H. Arceo friend.” In Pampanga, there are many who enjoy eating dog meat cooked ala caldereta or estofado. It is taken either as a viand when eating rice, as pulutan (finger food) during drinking sprees or simply as ordinary meat eaten just like other meat dishes. It is perhaps the fact that many Kapampangans like to eat dog meat that they earned the title“dugong aso”, even comparing their loyalty to their masters as one of the traits of the natives of Pampanga. Kapampangans are even branded as matatapang, just like dogs who growl when threatened and bite when insinuated. Nevertheless, dogs are known for their faithfulness to their masters, no matter what. Up in the north meanwhile, dogs are slaughtered in numbers, a fact that animal welfare authorities and advocates abhor. While there is a law in the country that protects the welfare of animals including dogs, there are still Filipinos who kill the animal for its meat or for selling in some public markets. We can from time to time, witness on the news how government authorities apprehend dog meat traders who are intercepted on the road or sometimes even caught in the act of slaughtering the animals. Dog meat is said to be an aphrodisiac, maybe the reason why many tough guys eat the meat before an undertaking. I have once tasted the meat to merely give way to the insistence of a buddy and I felt my body literally heating up. It’s perhaps how it was cooked (with chili) or the meat itself that gave me the feeling of a warm body. Kapampangans have a fondness for exotic foods. Who wouldn’t eat the lowly kamaru (crickets) that are cooked and eaten crunchy? Some eat farm mice and is a favorite delicacy especially in far-flung barangays. Some eat wild birds that are not ordinary for daily meals. Others eat barag (giant lizards) and snakes of various species. Well, they are not called exotic delicacies if they are only ordinary. Another favorite delicacy in the province is the frog, stuffed with ground pork on its belly and complemented with special herbs and spices. These are just among the many of the favorite dishes that Filipinos especially Kapampangans would enjoy. Happy eating. As of this writing “ It is perhaps the fact that many Kapampangans like to eat dog meat that they earned the title“dugong aso”, even comparing their loyalty to their masters as one of the traits of the natives of Pampanga.” *** This writer welcomes other views, comments, and reactions. I was in the state of denial; I just wanted to cry because it was painful. It finally dawned on me that we are not getting back together anymore, after 4 long years of waiting I couldn’t believe it’s officially over but how do we stop loving someone we keep seeing ourselves growing old with? When you finally understand why you should stop, how do you do it? How do we shift from loving that person to not caring at all? How I wish there’s a push button where everything would stop right away when you finally hear it from them that it’s over. There was anger I can’t deny. How could someone be so heartless, how can someone totally wreck you when all you ever wanted was to keep them. It’s so hard to trust that something beautiful could still come out of this pains and I was praying that I would learn to forgive their decisions. “Mararamdaman mo naman ’yun, eh,” she said. He has a new movie, “So It’s You,” with Carla Abellana, and a new TV show, “Nino,” with Katrina Halili. It’s good he’s tapped to play the lead role in the coming Cinemalaya entry, “The Janitor,” but shooting has yet to start. “In ‘Niño’, I’m just playing a guest role. Hindi kami mag-aabot ng magiging anak ko, si Miguel Tanfelix, who plays the title role. But Popoy says I’ll have a new soap in May.” In “So It’s You,” Tom plays a shoemaker with a funny name, Gorio Acuyong. He has just been dumped by his partner, Bangs Garcia, for another man, Manuel Chua. They’re not married but they have a love child, Mark Justin Alvarez, who happens to be mute. Then he meets Carla, who’s been jilted by her groom, JC de Vera, right on their wedding day. Carla then tries to use him to get JC back. “Carla and I enjoyed shooting this movie kasi it’s very light,” he says. “Tawanan lang kami nang tawanan. Unlike sa ‘My Husband’s Lover’ na puro conflict at iyakan. Masaya ang movie, talagang feel good siya, and it helps na dati ng maganda ang rapport namin ni Carla.” His swimming pool scene in the trailer where he’s shown in trunks is getting positive feedback. “Actually, nahihiya akong gawin ‘yun noong una kasi I just got back then from my vacation in the States after we had our ‘My Husband’s Lover’ concert there. Habang nandun ako, I ate a lot, pati chocolates, so I gained weight and I felt ang laki ng tiyan ko. E, pinag-trunks ako ni Direk Jun Lana, so sige, di ginawa ko. But I’ve trimmed down since then kasi nagpe-prepare ako ngayon for the Bench fashion show in September na us models, rarampa kami in our underwear.” Is it true he and GF K-la Rivera, a theatre actress he met when they were paired in ‘Aladdin’ at Meralco Theatre, have broken up? “Yes. It’s our mutual decision. She has signed up with GMA7 and we’re both so busy, lalo na ako, ang dami ko talagang trabaho and obligations na very time consuming. So we decided to focus muna on our work.” It was reported that Carla got drunk in a bar when she broke up with Geoff Eigenmann and she called him up to fetch her. “It’s not true. No such thing ever happened. I think may effort to link Carla and I kasi pareho kaming unattached ngayon to help promote our movie. But ayaw naming pilitin. It’s possible na maging kami, but not now. We don’t want to be accused na gumigimik lang kami for the sake of ‘So It’s You’. The movie can stand on its own merits kasi maganda talaga ang pagkakasulat at pagkakadirek sa kanya ni Direk Jun Lana. First time ko to work with him and I had fun. Headline Gitnang Luzon APRIL 29, 2014 carnapping from Page 1 According to the Pampanga representative, there is a need to amend Section 14 of Republic Act No. 6539, otherwise known as the Anti-Carnapping Act of 1972, because of the rampant carnapping incidents not only in the province but the country as well. The carnap incidents, Arroyo said, are believed to be perpetuated by organized crime groups. These groups use carnapped vehicles in committing other crimes such as bank robberies, murder, kidnapping and even terrorist activities. “The sense of security one feels inside his or her vehicle is now severely undermined,” Arroyo said. dq opens from Page 2 According to the former president, the existing laws penalizing carnapping are not enough to address the rising incidence of crimes. She noted that under the country’s laws, carnapping is considered as only a less serious offense, which allows the accused or perpetrator to post bail. “This constitutional right to post bail enables perpetrators to commit carnapping repeatedly since they are entitled to post bail during trial and pendency of the case with the courts,” Mrs. Arroyo pointed out. HB 312, which Arroyo filed with son Camarines Sur Rep. Diosdado Macapagal Arroyo, increases the penalty of imprisonment for the crime of carnapping from 14 years and eight months and not more than 17 years and eight months to not less than 20 years and one day and not more than 30 years when the carnapping is committed without violence or intimidation of persons. When carnapping is committed by means of violence against or intimidation of any person or force upon things, imprisonment shall be increased from 17 years and four months and not more than 30 years to 30 years and one day and not more than 40 years, according to the measure.• CAPITOL ALLOCATES from Page 1 cards under the NHTS-PR of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). (Be not afraid!) At dahil dito ay naisulat din ng isa pang manunulat ng dakilang Santo Papang ito ang tungkol dito, “There was, of course, absolutely no political or cultural warrant for that exhortation, no purely natural justification for it. It could come only from a man whose heart was filled with the supernatural sense that the Holy Spirit is the Lord of history.”
