Cars Crash While “Charging” Along Busy Corridor

Lately, there’s always an accident waiting to
happen in the area around Gateway Center
mall. On Monday around 3 p.m., a Nissan
Pathfinder was traveling southbound on
Schenck Avenue when a Dodge Charger,
which was traveling northbound on the same
avenue, collided at the intersection on
Flatlands Avenue. According to an eyewitness,
the driver of the Charger was making a lefthand turn when it slammed into the Pathfinder.
The Charger’s airbags deployed and the driver
was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.


Young women traveling around the community
in the middle of the night are being warned that the
Canarsie rapist is still on the loose – and police
believe he’s preyed on a few more victims over the
past month.
Most recently, police reported that the attacker
attempted to rape a 29-year-old woman near East
98th Street and Conklin Avenue on Monday,
September 7th at around 2 a.m. The victim told
authorities that a man approached her as she was
walking, grabbed her by the arm and told her he
had a gun. He then forced her into a nearby parking
lot where he tried to rape her – but she resisted.
Reports stated that the ruthless thug, whose face
was hidden by a bandana bearing Grenada’s flag,
fled on his bike in an unknown direction.
This is the second attack on record.
The first one took place on Sunday, August 30th
– just after midnight – on Rockaway Parkway
between Avenues M and N. In this incident, a 19year-old woman, who was walking southbound on
Rockaway Parkway, was approached by a man
wearing blue and white Hawaiian shorts and a
white tank top. His face was covered by a t-shirt.
He pulled the woman into an alleyway, threatened
her with a firearm, and raped her. He fled northbound on Rockaway Parkway.
Police said the punk, who’s about 19 - 24 years
old, is described as a black male with a medium
complexion, 5’6” tall, about 135 pounds.
Surveillance footage of the man running from businesses and homes near the attacks were released to
the media. The 69th Precinct has also been distributing flyers to the community and taping wanted
posters everywhere possible – announcing the
$2,500 reward for any information leading to an
arrest in the case.
Residents who may have information on these
attacks – or the suspect – is asked to call the
NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
The public can also submit their tips by logging
onto the Crime Stoppers Website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or texting their tips to
274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All calls will
be kept confidential.

East Flatbush Blaze Injures One
A three-month-old was reportedly hurt and taken to an area hospital after a fire broke out at 4714 Church Avenue yesterday at around 3:30 p.m.
The inferno gutted the second floor of the three-story attached commercial building. No other apartments or businesses in the area were impacted by the fire. It took about a half hour for the 60 responding firefighters to get the blaze under control. The incident remains under investigation as
of press time and officials could not say whether the fire appeared to be suspicious.

NBA Hall Of Famer Trains Athletes At College Basketball Clinic
Kingsborough Community College became a
magnet for aspiring local professional basketball players last Friday after former NBA player
Nathaniel “Tiny” Archibald hosted a special
clinic for intercollegiate basketball players.
The college’s basketball coach Lambert Shell
and Archibald ran players through the drills
both men used to formerly run on their respective teams, while also enlightening the aspiring
athletes. While much of Archibald’s basketball
career was spent on the court, the NBA Hall of
Fame member has also spent time helping to run
community centers and homeless shelters.
During his Kingsborough appearance,
Archibald spoke to players on the importance of
continued development beyond the game –
specifically about pursuing their college
degrees.
Archibald holds several titles in the NBA,
including being inducted into the Naismith
Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991, and
the NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1981.
       

It’s Not So Tricky For Old School Rapper To Motivate College Students


Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, frontman for hip-hop
music pioneers Run-DMC, has been considered a
poet, philosopher, mentor, music innovator, and
Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. Last year he added
comic book writer to his resume with his DMC
comic series.
Last week he made history again – and made an
impact on students at Kingborough Community
College. He was the first speaker for the English
Department’s new annual Visiting Writers Series,
where he promoted his comics.
In the first issue, released during the 2014 installment of New York Comic Con, DMC is introduced
as the main hero in addition to a few minor recurring
characters. The issue featured two different covers
for collectors to purchase. Many variations were
later released as exclusive books for other conventions and events during the year. For the second
issue, slated to be unveiled at this year’s NY Comic
Con, the first heroine of the series will be introduced. A more supportive cast of characters will follow.
When asked how he became interested in comics,
McDaniels stated, “Marvel had superheroes in New
York City. So, as a little kid who couldn’t go anywhere, I learned a lot about New York City from
comic books. There were places Spiderman visited,
like the Roosevelt Island Tram. I saw it the first time
and thought ‘Oh my God! It does exist!’ So, I
learned about many places around New York City
from Spiderman. I would bring myself into the
world of comic books.”
Growing up in Hollis, Queens, McDaniels attended Catholic school and quickly became a target for
public school kids who ridiculed him. The uniforms
he wore made some kids think he was rich. They
sometimes attacked him and stole his lunch money
and sneakers.
“It was miserable to be a kid back then going to
Catholic school and living in Hollis. Being in school,
everything was fine,” McDaniels said. “It was cool.
I loved new books. I loved to read and write. I loved
the first day of school. New lunch box and book bag.
How many people love the feel of new books? That
says something about you! I’m living in this world
of comic books because the real life existence was
traumatic. The comic books were so powerful! The
comic books took you away from the reality of life.”
McDaniels also credits comic books for helping
him excel in other subjects such as history and writing. Captain America comics took him to World War
II. They also took him to the front line of the Nazis
and Red Skull and Hitler. When it was time to take
the tests, he was extremely prepared to demonstrate
what he knew.
“In science I learned about the planets and stars –
Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and asteroids - but Silver
Surfer would take me up into the galaxy! Reading,
writing and drawing in comic books helped with my
education in school,” he told the students at
Kingsborough. “The world of superheroes and the
world of comic books made me feel powerful.”
In high school, McDaniels began to see the world
of hip-hop entering Hollis with MCs rapping in
groups around the neighborhood. He saw breakdancers performing and felt like superheroes had
come to life with the way they were able to move. It
was the late 1970s when he became intrigued by hiphop artists Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
His fascination with their music led McDaniels to
sell his collection of comics for two turntables and a
mixer. As Grandmaster Get High, McDaniels honed
his DJ mixing skills alongside longtime friend
Joseph “Run” Simmons. As the two continued to
perform around Queens, Jam-Master Jay, known at
the time as the best DJ in Hollis, joined them and
McDaniels was encouraged to try his hand at rapping instead of DJing. McDaniels changed his name
to DMC (Devastating Mic Controller) and the three
formed Run-DMC.
Since their formation, Run-DMC has gone from a
neighborhood act to being considered pioneers of
the hip-hop and rap worlds. They have worked with
a slew of other top artists such as Slick Rick, Beastie
Boys, and Eminem and sold over 15 million albums
worldwide.
In October 2002, Run-DMC lost Jam-Master Jay
when he was shot inside his recording studio. His
death prompted the group to disband. Since the
breakup, Simmons has gone on to become Reverend
Run with his own reality show about his family and
McDaniels continues to tour with other artists to perform Run-DMC hits. In 2009, Run-DMC became
the second hip-hop act in history (Grandmaster
Flash and the Furious Five was the first) to be
inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Simmons
and McDaniels have also helped to create the J.A.M.
Awards (Justice, Arts, and Music) in honor of Jay.
Throughout his music career, McDaniels has
maintained his love of comics and remembers fondly all the titles he’s read and learned from over the
years. Now, with the knowledge and passion for
comics still in him, McDaniels decided to revisit his
childhood and create his own series based on his life
growing up in Hollis.
“I wanted to make a comic that is for everyone:
all races, creeds, ages, genders, everyone,” he told
students. “They will deal with social, political and
many other subjects that the media doesn’t usually
want to show. And they will have more characters
introduced, more heroes and villains, because we
don’t want people to get tired of seeing just my boring a**.”
Many students were given a chance to ask the rap
mogul questions. One in particular brought out
McDaniels’ poetic side. Katrina Lee, a freshman in
the Theater Arts Department and aspiring dancer,
asked how to bring out messages – such as gender
equality and respect for women – in her music.
“You need to find your voice,” McDaniels said
with hesitation. “Perhaps not your voice. You need
to find your vibration. Find a unique way to say what
your message is and bring it to the masses. Think of
Pink, the artist Pink. She found a way to bring out
her words in a new way, a way no one had done yet,
and became successful from it. She did it smartly
though. She put out what the music industry wanted
her to first. The type of music they wanted. When
she was much higher in the industry, she said ‘I have
these ideas and I will do them my way’ and they had
to let her. Do that – be patient and do what the industry wants if you need to, then bring out that vibration. Then the world will hear it.”
In addition to McDaniels’ appearance at NY
Comic Con and his continued comic production, he
faithfully travels the world with Run-DMC when
asked by other artists to be part of their tours.
They’re also working on future albums.

Hizzoner And Schools Chancellor Visit Canarsie
On Wednesday, September 30th, Brooklyn
Generation High School (BGHS) principal Lydia
Colón Bomani welcomed Mayor Bill de Blasio,
Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña and local elected officials to her school. The visit was to highlight
the improvements made by the school, discuss the
services offered by community schools such as
BGHS and to solicit feedback from officials, parents and students.
Prior to the start of the meeting, Mayor de
Blasio had group activity sessions with parents,
community members, and school faculty.
Elected officials in attendance included
Assemblywoman Roxanne J. Persaud and
Councilman Alan Maisel who along with Mayor de
Blasio, and Chancellor Fariña addressed the audi-
ence before allowing questions. Both the
Assemblywoman and Councilman congratulated
the parents for their involvement. They also
encouraged the principal and staff to keep up the
work that they have been doing to make the school
successful.
Topics of discussion ranged from test prep, student attendance and community partnership.
BGHS has seen its student attendance increase
to 91 percent with one student’s attendance
increasing from 16 to 100 percent. The school has
also received a “B” on the latest Progress Report.
BGHS is located in the South Shore High

Don’t Mess With A Month Of Trying To Keep Our Kids In Line!

This month it was particularly frustrating. October is
National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month. There are
variations of this title, but each school, I believe, has
its own initiative aimed at creating a better learning
environment for their students. What’s really going
to work???
As of last week, only ONE school has gotten back
to us about anti-bullying efforts and programs. P.S.
276 on East 83rd Street invited me to capture their
annual “Stomp Out Bullying” event, during which
children gathered in the auditorium and took an oath,
announced by Principal Yasmine Fidelia, that they
would not engage in or promote behavior that interferes with their learning – and that they would report
bullying to their elders and accept their peers’ differences. Students made the promise and then took to
the front of the school where they placed blue ribbons on a “Stomp Out Bullying” banner that was
attached to a gate.

A promise is a promise...Sounds easy enough,
right?
At the core of things, I’ve always wondered
where children initially learn that it’s okay to torment and mock someone? Should we blame the
adults for teaching them hatred? Where and when
does a child even establish the idea that someone
who is different than them deserves to be bullied?
Boys poked fun at me when I was younger - they
pulled my hair and stuck gum under my seat. No big
deal...Girls “bullied” me because I was quiet or
because I didn’t want to give them an answer on a
test. One girl in junior high ordered me to meet her
outside after class in the Bildersee schoolyard. At 13,
seeing a girl slam her closed fist into the palm of an
opened hand was enough bullying for me! I played
no part in the drama, but later found out that this
“bully” wasn’t just targeting me, she had a beef with
tons of other kids in the school too!
Sorry to burst anyone’s motivational bubble, but –
much like gun violence - we can never do enough to
stop bullying because everyone’s reason for being a
troublemaker is circumstantial. Some kids feel inadequate, so they mock someone else to feel better
about themselves....Some kids have family problems
that run so deep, all they can do is beat up on a kid
in their class to resolve their inner-conflicts...Some
kids grew up in families that never taught them how
to get along with people who are different than them.
Subsequently, if they come across someone who is
of a different culture, who was born with a health or
mental problem, or has some physical challenge,
their first reaction might be to treat that person as a
subordinate.
Let’s get real! Adults are no better!
As far as this country has come in terms of
“acceptance,” there are still adults who are known to
throw around racial slurs and homophobic vocabulary. If they do this in front of their children, or they
don’t want their children spending time with those
who are “different,” they internalize this and overhear our disapproval of those we “bully”- even during a passing conversation.
The media doesn’t help either!
Six-year-old Gage Berger, of Utah, had plastic
surgery on his ears recently because he was born
with what looked like “elf ears.” The youngster was
bullied in school for a long time before his parents
decided that butchering his head and pinning his ears
down was something that would give him more confidence. Really? If he didn’t have any hearing problems, then what about as he grows older, is this child
going to believe that anything can be fixed with a little nip/tuck?
So, here we are in Anti-Bullying Awareness
Month and we’re telling children – not even teens –
that not getting teased is as easy as going under the
knife so you can impress everyone in class!
Instead of parents modifying their children, they
should be meeting with the parents of those bullies
and hashing out ways of punishing the bullies – NOT
putting the victims on an operating table so they can
be acceptable to their classmates.

District 22 does it again! P.S. 277
The Gerritsen Beach School was recently recognized as a Blue Ribbon
School for 2015.
The Gerritsen Avenue school was
one of seven New York City public
schools that earned the prestigious
designation and the only recipient in
District 22.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne
Duncan announced the winners on
September 29th. The selection
process is based on a school’s overall
academ-ic excellence or their
progress in closing achievement gaps
among student subgroups.

November 9th and 10th in
Washington, DC.

Community Education Council
(CEC) said adults are to blame – and
that her company, Truly Refined,
can turn around students who don’t
have the social tools they need to
become successful.
Angela Nichols, director of the
professional etiquette company
Truly Refined, spoke about a program they offer called Socially Fit
Kidz.
“Social skills are not really taught
in school,” Nichols told the audience. “We believe it’s the parents’
fault that children don’t know etiquette and manners. If you talk
down to your child, they learn from
that.”
Socially Fit Kidz helps students
learn valuable skills including
everyday etiquette, dining manners,
effective communication skills,
social emotional learning and proper
dress etiquette. Nichols was
adamant about the program’s influence on students.
“The
previous
generation
dropped the ball when it came to
manners,” she said. “There are two
generations that haven’t propelled
our kids to the next level in life.”
The representative also dropped
the ball on the racial divide that
exists in our community. “We studied how black parents talk to their
children in comparison to how white
parents speak to their kids – and
there is a big difference with how
emotionally and socially healthy
those children are.”
At one school, Nichols noted, a
few of the girls who completed the
program became mentees for a
Fortune 500 company and are leading the path for a successful future.
Truly Refined offers individual etiquette packages or cumulative packages, which provide student development in tandem with the NYS
Common Core Learning Standards.
While Nichols’ company coaches
adults in top-notch businesses and
their clients become more marketable, employing skills kids need
now is essential. “Get them now
while they’re young,” she said.
For those interested in bringing
the program to their school, it would
subsequently be funded through the
Department of Education (DOE).
Dollarwise, Nichols did not disclose
how much the program costs. CEC
President James Dandridge said the
financial components of the program “are not to be discussed” at the
meeting.
Ironically, there was no shortage
of talks about dollars and cents
when it came to discussing the
Contract for Excellence (C4E)
budget. DOE representative Kamal
Salfarlie gave an overview of how
C4E funds have been spent.
According to the paperwork distributed at the meeting, funds were first
received in the 2007-08 school year
and “must now be distributed to certain schools in specific program
areas. No new funding has been
received in five years and was
reduced in 2011-12.”
The five-year plan for how to
spend $531 million was presented in
the usual PowerPoint method.
Salfarlie spoke about the $183 million in “unrestricted funds” and the
$348 million of “restricted funds.”

Superintendent
Beverly Wilkins questioned the
method the DOE used to allocate its
budget, identifying some C4E funding as “virtual money” or “make
believe money” that’s not really
being put into district schools.
Others asked if all the schools
receive equal funding when NYC’s
preliminary C4E plan is mapped out.
“Not every school will receive
the same funds because not every
program works in every school,” the
DOE representative said.
The C4E funds cover elementary
and middle schools and include programs such as ELL, afterschool and
training initiatives. Funds must also
go to students with the greatest educational need, such as students in
poverty, those with disabilities and
students with low academic achievement or at risk of not graduating.
Salfarlie said the deadline for
public comment on the budget,
which can be found on the DOE’s
web site, is November 6th.

The three-year anniversary of
Superstorm Sandy is approaching,
and life in Gerritsen Beach is
nowhere near back to “normal” for
many of its residents. The vicious
storm tore through the community,
flooding homes and businesses.
Today, homes sit abandoned, homeowners are displaced and houses
need to be elevated. On Monday,
State Senator Marty Golden hosted a
walking tour of the devastated area
with Senate Majority Leader John
Flanagan and community activists to
discuss continued Sandy recovery
efforts.
Golden organized the tour to bring
attention to the lack of progress in
Gerritsen Beach. “We could sit at a
desk and talk about it…or we can
walk around the neighborhood. A
picture is worth a thousands words,”
Golden said.
Community leaders gathered at
Gerritsen Inlet, located at the end of
Gerritsen Avenue, which recently
flooded due to last weekend’s rain.
Doreen Garson, Chief of the
Gerritsen Beach Volunteer Fire
Department, explained that Gerritsen
Beach didn’t get any additional sand
– as opposed to other coastal areas –
after Sandy.
She also pointed out a low-lying
area of the Belt Parkway – just west
of the Gerritsen Inlet Bridge, which
is being raised as part of the
Department of Transportation’s project to reconstruct seven bridges on

struck, the floodwaters rushed over
the parkway into the inlet and flooded the streets. “We requested that the
city extend the project and elevate
the low-lying area, but that’s not part
of their plan,” Garson said.
The walking tour highlighted
some of the abandoned homes – estimated between 90 and 100 – as well
as homes needing reconstruction. An
empty lot sits at 3078 Gerritsen
Avenue – the former site of two
homes, which were demolished
about three months ago. “It’s difficult for these residents. They have to
live elsewhere for six to eight
months while their homes are being
repaired – and they’re told they have
to get out of their homes in three
weeks. It’s hard – especially if you
have kids,” Golden said.
“Gerritsen Beach got it from all
three sides – two canals and the Belt
Parkway in between. Three years
later, there’s no drilling, no construction. It’s so quiet here. It’s pretty
sad. We need to get people moving
back and staying here. We’ve seen
so many abandoned homes,” Golden
said.
“We need to identify the bottlenecks and fix them,” he added.
“There are still people displaced
from their homes. They need a place
to spend the winter. We need to find
a way of getting the money moving,
companies moving and getting help
for Gerritsen Beach, Sheepshead
Bay and Manhattan Beach.”

Brooklyn Beep Has More Talks
About Canarsie Pier Ferry Service

Borough President Eric Adams
recently called for a citywide ferry plan
that would connect ferry landings with
MTA buses and “integrate” fares.
According to the scope of the plan,
the introduction of a southern Brooklyn ferry route would provide reliable
service to Bay Ridge, Sunset Park,
Red Hook, Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo
– and possibly Canarsie residents.
“I also believe that the local route
would have subsequent potential to
add an additional stop in Sunset Park
in proximity to the Bush Terminal
complex, and that the Rockaway route
could subsequently be modified after
initial success to add service to the
Canarsie Pier, the marina opposite
Aviator Sports in Dead Horse Bay,
Plumb Beach and Coney Island,”
Adams stated.
Adams wants the Department of
Transportation to foster safer pedestrian connections to ferry landings,
which would somehow integrate a
ferry payment with the MTA’s current per-ride fair.
The Beep’s office noted that this is
the first time his proposal has been
mentioned about ferry service being
established at Canarsie Pier. There have
not yet been any talks with National
Parks Service about the project.
However, back in 2012, Marty Markowitz – former borough president –
sought to expand ferry service from
the city to Canarsie despite the defunct
dock slips that fell into disrepair in the
late 1990s.

In Sheepshead Bay
Grainy images of two men who
allegedly stole money from a store in
the Sheepshead Bay area were recently
released to the public.
According to the NYPD, the robbery took place on Friday, September
25th just before 11:30 p.m. The duo
broke into the Leah Discount Store at
3354 Nostrand Avenue by lifting the
front security gate. After removing $600
in cash from the register, they fled
the scene in an unknown direction.
Police haven’t provided a detailed
description of the crooks, but anyone
with information on the burglary is

Vikings Trample Thomas Jefferson, 36-2, In Rain Soaked Football Game

Thomas Jefferson scored the first points of
Friday night’s tilt on a safety early in the first
quarter. For a moment, Vikings head coach Matt
Ciquera thought the inclement weather could
play a factor in a possible upset, especially with
the absence of star quarterback Jason Martin,
who was out with a slight leg injury.
But South Shore got on track, scoring 16
unanswered points in the first period en route to
a 36-2 drubbing of the Orange Wave (0-5) in
City Conference action at Thomas Jefferson
High School Field.
“It was a question of the weather,” Ciquera
said. “Like (if) the weather was going to be that
ridiculous, that sometimes offense becomes
impossible when the weather is that bad? But
once we scored, it gave us confidence.”
After two defensive scores, senior Deandre
Campbell punched in a 12-yard rushing touchdown to extend the Vikings lead to 22-2 with
4:26 remaining in the second quarter. South
Shore (5-0) cashed in on another fumble when
junior Kavan Gordon pounced on the pigskin,
and proceeded to rumble into the end zone for
the score, increasing the advantage to 28-2 late
in the first half.
Refusing the let up, the Vikings recovered the
muffed kickoff at the Orange Wave’s 30 to open
the second half. They quickly went to work, cap-
ping the drive and scoring on a three-yard TD
run by junior Armand Robinson, followed by the
successful two-point conversion for a 34-point
lead early in the third period.
Ciquera said his decision to sit Martin to back
up Willerm Greffin was more precautionary than
anything, and he would only play if the dire
need arose.
“Because of the wet turf, and we felt we had
enough without him tonight, that we decided
that it was in everybody’s best interest to come
out in the first half, and see how things went,”
he explained. “If everything was going well, and
we had a lead going into the second half, we
decided we were going to shelf him for the
whole game. If it had been a battle in the second
half, we probably would’ve let him play. But
because he was nursing a minor injury, and we
were winning, I felt it was best not to let him
dress tonight.”
South Shore’s stingy defense only allowed 12
yards of offense the entire game, and recovered
four fumbles. The Vikings host Campus Magnet
Saturday at 7 p.m.

JV Football Chiefs Take
Down JFK, 14-6, At Home

Things didn’t begin well for the
Junior Varsity Canarsie football team
as John F. Kennedy marched down
the field, capping its first drive with
an eight-yard rushing touchdown for
a 6-0 lead midway through the first
quarter.
But the Chiefs (4-1) regrouped, and
didn’t allow a single point the rest of
the way while picking up two scores of
their own in a well-played 14-6 win
over the Knights (0-3) Saturday at
home. It was Canarsie’s fourth straight
victory.
Head Coach Robert Palmer believes
his boys showed a measure of mettle
with top running back Calvin Hutchison on the sidelines with bruised ribs.
“That was a big win, because we
were down a running back,” Palmer
said. “But we just pulled through. That
was a loss (without Hutchison), but the
guys got behind each other, something
they’ve doing all year.”
Freshman Evens DeLouis found pay
dirt on running touchdown to tie the
game at six, with sophomore quarterback Johnny Watson running into the
end zone for the successful two-point
conversion and 8-6 advantage late in
the first half.
Canarsie’s defense came up big in
the third period when freshman Chris
Jean Philippe made a nice open field
tackle, causing a fumble, which he
quickly pounced on.
After the Chiefs recovered another
muff, they moved the football down the
gridiron, with sophomore Eric Anderson punching the ball in for a rushing
score, extending their lead to 14-6 late
in the contest.
Canarsie’s defense clamped down
once again, with Watson recording a
key sack at the Chiefs’ 45 yard line
before the team put the contest to bed
for good in the waning seconds. Palmer
feels, while varsity is struggling, the
structural change with both teams practicing together will build a positive
future for the Chiefs’ football program.
“We’re basing the whole philosophy
around here that it’s a whole program,”
he explained. “So, if these kids are
executing our plays, our philosophy
on offense and defense, and their doing it now, hopefully it’s going to keep
growing, and moving forward.”

Pets Count Their Blessings
At St. Bernard Church
A parade of four-legged friends
were in attendance after each
mass last Sunday at St. Bernard
Church in Bergen Beach.
Parishoners and residents came
out for the church’s annual celebration of pets, the Blessing of
the Animals. Over 40 pets were
blessed by St. Bernard’s Deacon
Frank D’Accordo during the
event, which is held in celebration
of St. Francis of Assisi for the
care and love he expressed for
animals. Furry friends of all
shapes, colors and sizes scampered to the church alongside
their owners. Last year’s Blessing
of the Animals brought out one
hamster and his owner, but there
is no word on whether the pair

HURRICANE SANDY: THEN AND NOW
Over the next month, the Canarsie Courier
will be revisiting areas hardest hit by
Hurricane Sandy and how they have been
repaired since the storm.
Hurricane Sandy flooded homes and streets all
over Canarsie, and the high winds wreaked havoc
on trees in Seaview Park. Sandy’s wrath knocked
over this huge tree on East 96th Street, off of
Seaview Avenue – just a few blocks from the
park. Fortunately, no was injured when the tree
toppled over. Today, you can see a small tree
has been replanted in its place.

Community Safety Discussed
At FUBA Meeting

Despite a low turnout, the Friends
United Block Association (FUBA)
met last Thursday – following their
summer hiatus – to talk about safety
within the community.
President Gardy Brazela spearheaded the first meeting of the calendar year at Temple Shaare Emeth
on Farragut Road and East 78th
Street where important information
was distributed to residents in light
of Fire Prevention Week and recent
rape reports.
Following two attacks that took
place in the middle of the night, and
believed to be carried out by the
same suspect, police are still on the
hunt for the Canarsie rapist. Sixtyninth Precinct Community Affairs
police officers Donald Lewis and
Eton White advised women to walk
in well-lit areas, pretend to talk on
the phone and walk in pairs, if they
are able to do so.
The FDNY’s Fire Safety
Education Unit also provided residents with basic tips including placing combination smoke and carbon
monoxide alarms in their basements,
kitchen and bedroom levels, having
an escape plan, refraining from
going back into a burning home and
shutting off heaters at night.
Representatives also showed residents how to correctly use a fire
extinguisher and where to place
them in their homes.
Some residents said cars are
speeding on East 81st Street between
Foster Avenue and Farragut Road –
not too far from a children’s park.
Residents fear that children’s lives
are in danger and that a big accident
is just waiting to happen. Many
would like to see speed bumps
installed so that cars slow down on
that block.
“They are going to hit a child one

A Cricket Mobile Store on
Pennsylvania Avenue was robbed last
month and police are asking for the
public’s help in tracking down the
thief who got away with thousands of
dollars.
Reports stated that on Monday,
September 28th at about 5:30 p.m., a
man entered the mobile shop at 943
Pennsylvania Avenue. He posed as a
customer, looking around, but then
approached an employee with what
appeared to be a firearm inside a
black plastic bag. He ordered the
worker, along with some customers,
to the back of the shop to a storage
room. Somehow, the crook knew
where the store’s money was located,
as he took several envelopes containing $6,000 from the rear storage closet before fleeing from the store.
No one was injured during the robbery – and police could not confirm
whether the man was armed or if the
object inside the black plastic bag
simply looked like a gun.
The suspect is described as a black
male who was last seen wearing a
black long-sleeved sweater, light blue
jeans, a black hat and black and red
sneakers.

Police are still looking for a man
who attacked someone in the East
New York area over a month ago.
Last week, the NYPD released an
image of the suspect and hope residents in the area can identify him.
Officials stated that on Sunday,
August 23rd at about 4:50 in the
morning, a man kicked in the glass
door of a bodega at 114 Cozine
Avenue near Pennsylvania Avenue.
He barged into the store and
allegedly punched a 21-year-old in
the face. While it was unknown if
the man in the bodega was a customer or employee – or if he was
targeted during the attack – police
said he refused medical attention
and didn’t give a description of the
assailant. There was nothing stolen
from the store or the victim during
the incident, police said.

was quiet and didn’t follow the “rough” crowd. I
was bullied because I looked smarter (being
the operative word here, since I wasn’t in any
advanced courses) than the kids in my class. Were
they jealous? Were they simply disrespecting the
fact that I didn’t want to be like them ...and 
did they even care?
Programs in our schools can only help so much.
By the time one class and grade of tormentors
leave the building, another class is coming in.
Teaching acceptance, tolerance and conflict-resolution is a great idea. But I’m thinking these kids
need more than a mantra.
If you’ve ever watched “Beyond Scared Straight,”
- and if you haven’t, you should YouTube it –
you’ll see the perfect example of how at-risk
youths are put to the test by adults behind bars.
Inmates say such horrible things to the teens who
are placed in jail for a day, that eventually, their
resolve is broken down.
I propose the Department of Education (DOE)
put money into a fully-functioning Anti-Bullying
Boot Camp in every school or district where it’s
sorely needed. No, we don’t want to lower anyone’s self-esteem, but let’s get a team of therapists
for those troubled kids and put them in their place!
Let’s sit these tormentors down in the cafeteria and
smash food all over bookbags and poke fun
at  imperfections without them being
allowed to say anything. We can follow this up
with a rigorous course of brainwashing – providing them with lessons on how to perform the best
in lives and focus on learning and
growth instead of picking on someone innocent!
If all of you educators out there think this is too
brash, too harsh and too severe, then look at how
bullying affects the victims. Some acts of torment
leave a brutal emotional and psychological scar on
kids and stay with them well into their adulthood.
Some eventually turn to drugs, gangs or suicide
because they’re tired of not being accepted.
Alternatively, someone can bully the DOE into
allocating money towards plastic surgeries and
anything else that will ensure our children accept
each other for who they truly are.
It’s only for one month – after that, we can stop
harassing our educators...

If you are a boy or girl in Grade 5 or 6, we would
like you to consider becoming an Altar Server. Becoming an Altar Server is an important liturgical
role. Altar Servers serve the congregation, the
priests and one another in celebrating the Mass. By
learning to be an Altar Server, young people provide vital assistance to the parish and help lead the
congregation in prayer. They learn to respect God’s
Church but also learn to respect themselves. If you

have a deeper understanding of this healing sacrament. It is not Last Rites, at the moment of death. As
Jesus ministered to the sick, so does the Church. It is
for anyone who is seriously sick. So it is intended for
those with an ongoing condition (Cancer, Sickle Cell,
Asthma etc.) those who are going into hospital during the month for an operation, elderly whose health
is slipping and for those with a mental illness like depression.

Annual Unity Gospel Fest Draws Support from Community
Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and Mt. Zion
Church of God 7th Day will celebrate the 6th
Annual Unity Gospel Fest, on Sunday, October 11th
from 4 - 7 p.m. at Kingsbrook Medical Center, 585
Schenectady Avenue between Winthrop Street and
Rutland Road. This unique event was designed to celebrate the connection between physical and spiritual
wellness through the unification of gospel music.
The event will be held in Kingsbrook’s Lillian Minkin
Ballroom and is free to the Central Brooklyn community. The day will feature the healing sounds of
gospel along with health and wellness information
for Kingsbrook medical professionals.
Pastor Gilford Monrose of Mt. Zion Church of
God 7th Day is a key coordinator of this day of praise
and worship and is committed to growing this event
annually via partners and sponsors.
“This event has been such a blessing to our community that is very spiritually committed and connected. It is such a powerful showcase of spiritual talent
and camaraderie,” he said.
The day features a variety of choirs and gospel
artists, and is an impressive reflection of spirituality

Hurricane Joaquin may have been well
down south in the Atlantic Ocean over the
weekend, but the waters of Jamaica Bay
were no safe place for five men who took
an excursion on their leisure boat Friday
night. Choppy waters led to the death of
two boaters who were thrown overboard
near Floyd Bennett Field.
The NYPD and FDNY’s harbor units
responded to the chaotic scene on the
waters at around 8 p.m., when fierce rain,
wind and choppy waters sent 50-year-old
Joel Ortiz and 42-year-old Mejia Ricardo
overboard.
Officials report that, following the incident, one of the boaters approached an
NYPD sergeant at a guard post in Floyd
Bennett Field. He told the sergeant that he
was one of five men that were out on the
waters fishing when the boat capsized.
NYPD Air Sea and Rescue and FDNY
quickly mobilized to search for his
friends. Two of the individuals were
pulled from the water by firefighters.
Aviation Unit Officers stationed at Floyd
Bennett Field also conducted a foot canvass of the area, finding another man
along the shoreline. Another one of the
men managed to reach the shore by himself.
Paramedics took the three surviving
men to Coney Island Hospital where they
were listed in stable condition. Ricardo
and Ortiz were taken to Beth Israel
Hospital, where they were pronounced
dead.
According to reports, the two fishermen
who passed away were Brooklyn building
superintendents. In an interview with
PIX11 news, Ortiz’ family told the media
that the men were aware of the bad weather, but that their love of fishing didn’t stop
them from heading out on the water that
night.
“They always loved to fish, that was
what they loved doing best,” Ortiz’s
daughter, Angela Cruz told the press.

It was another week of nail-biting PSAL football
action, as two games were decided by narrow margins, one of which came down to overtime.
John F. Kennedy – 26, Canarsie – 18
(City Conference)
Canarsie (1-4) dominated for most of the tilt, but
shot themselves in the foot when it mattered most,
allowing the Knights to escape with an overtime
win in the Bronx on a rainy Friday night.
Leading 12-6 late in the fourth quarter, JFK (1-4)
scored a touchdown, and another in OT to secure
the victory.
Knights junior running back Poucho Franklyn scampered for 104 yards and two TDs.
Next Game: Chiefs host Boys & Girls Saturday
at noon.
James Madison – 46, Sheepshead Bay – 22
(Bowl Conference)
The Golden Knights (4-1) amassed a whopping
641 yards of offense, 545 on the ground, against
Sheepshead Bay (2-3) Sunday at home.
The three-headed monster running attack of seniors Naahman Gumbs (175, 1 TD) and Keenan Sylvester (170, 2 TDs) totaled 345 yards while sophomore quarterback Shamar Logan added 170 with two
scores in the lopsided victory.
In addition, Logan completed four of five attempts
for 96 yards and a touchdown.
Gumbs added a scoring reception to his impressive day against the Sharks while senior Daniel Jefferson had one of his own.
Senior Jamal Charles led Madison’s defense with
eight tackles while Jefferson and senior Darius Word
made seven stops apiece.

‘Weed’ Like To See This Mess Cleaned Up
Residents are constantly contacting the Canarsie
Courier with quality of life issues, and overgrown
weeds are a big gripe for many. Unsightly weeds
attract litterbugs who dump their garbage there,
and garbage attracts unwanted vermin. Besides,
it makes our otherwise pleasant looking community an eyesore. There’s a row of weeds on Avenue J, near East 88th Street on the northeast
side, making it difficult for pedestrians to walk
down the block. The weeds are so high on the
northeast corner of Church Lane and East 89th
Street that you can’t even see the house behind
them. With Halloween around the corner, this site
looks like a good site for a scary movie…appropriately, the cemetery is right across the lane.
Is there a lot or street piled up with trash or

Street and Flatlands Avenue. Brazela stressed the
importance of contacting Community Board 18
for concerns and complaints.
Brazela, who is also president of the 69th
Precinct Community Council, was not pleased
with the attendance at the FUBA meeting and
said that the volume of people present did not
mirror the number of flyers distributed to the
community.
“Showing up is crucial to whether or not
FUBA will be heard and taken seriously,”
Brazela said. “The only way to get better service
in our community is to speak and come out.”
With the holiday season not too far away,
Brazela announced that FUBA and the 69th
Precinct will partner with the Christian Church
Of Canarsie on East 89th Street and Farragut
Road to feed over 500 residents for Thanksgiving. Both civic organizations are seeking volunteers.
