

Congressional District had an opportunity to air their grievances yesterday morning at a Congress on Your
Corner event held in front of the
Spring Creek Post Office, 1310
Pennsylvania Avenue. Congressman
Hakeem Jeffries spent two hours
talking with his constituents and listening to their concerns.
He told the  that
affordable housing was at the top of
their list. “Spring Creek residents
are concerned about recent rent
increases. They also have quality of
life concerns connected to the
increase in crime and shootings in
East New York.” There were positive comments too. Starrett City tenants say they are happy with their
community – the absence of garbage
and graffiti – but are discouraged by
the number of power outages and
how management handles residents’
issues. One tenant from Linden
Houses said she is not happy with
the maintenance and groundskeepers
at her development. Other concerns
ranged from the privatization of
Social Security to concerns about
war and peace in Syria, Iran and
Iraq.

Guns Won’t Stop Blazin’ At Glenwood Houses

Another man was shot dead in the Glenwood
Houses – this time it was following a heated argument during what should have been a simple barbecue. According to police, 23-year-old Bruce
Donovan died after he was shot multiple times in
the chest and legs while he was standing outside of
5806 Farragut Road.
The carnage, believed to be gang-related, took
place at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 7th.
The  reported that residents in the area
heard 10 quick gunshots before everyone at the barbecue scattered in different directions. Reports also
stated that the suspect – or suspects – fled in a black
car toward Ralph Avenue. Another person at the
shindig was shot in his left arm. Police sources said
that while Donovan was pronounced dead at
Brookdale Hospital, the second victim, whose
name was not released, walked into Kings County
Hospital for treatment on his own accord and is
expected to survive his injuries.
This was the second fatal shooting that took
place at Glenwood Houses since the beginning of
the month. On Saturday, August 1st, 24-year-old
Donnell Smith was shot dead in an elevator at 901
East 56th Street just after 1:30 in the morning.
Following the shooting, police with the 63rd
Precinct found over 40 shell casings at the scene. A
vigil was held for Smith, who lived in the housing
project. According to police, Donovan did not live
in Glenwood Houses and resided at St. John’s
Place.
No arrests have been made as of press time and
the investigations are ongoing.

We know phone booths have gone the way of the dinosaur, but now there’s one less place to “phone home” along Rockaway Parkway – that’s
because of a two-car crash that occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, August 7th near the corner of Skidmore Avenue. It appeared that one
of the cars was traveling southbound on Rockaway Parkway while another vehicle was making a left-hand turn onto Skidmore Avenue. The collision sent one of the cars crashing into the phone booth, knocking it over onto a U.S. Postal mailbox. According to News12 Brooklyn, EMS took
two people to Brookdale Hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries are unknown.

It’s Luau Time At Four Seasons!
On Wednesday, August 5th, Four Seasons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 1555 Rockaway Parkway, hosted one of their many summer BBQ’s
on the outside patio. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all in attendance, as residents sat back and took in the beautiful afternoon breeze, listened
to music provided by “Make U Dance Entertainment” and enjoyed scrumptious food cooked on the grill provided by the Dietary Staff. BBQ chicken,
corn on the cob and hot dogs were just a few of the menu items. Staff members from Nursing and Recreation – in between serving – entertained
the residents by dancing to familiar songs and participating in various line dances. Special thanks go out to all the staff members who assisted with
the summer BBQ – making sure everyone had a great time.

A NYC Department of Sanitation garbage truck and a
red Camaro collided at the corner of Ralph Avenue and
Avenue N just after noon yesterday. Reports stated that
a 19-year-old was struck by the truck and suffered head
injuries. It appeared that both vehicles were traveling
northbound, crossing the busy intersection, when the
crash occurred. The driver’s side of the two-door sports
car was smashed up pretty badly, but you’d never know
that the garbage truck was in an accident.
Congressman Jeffries Addresses
Iran Nuclear Plan

The Flatbush Park Jewish Center in
Mill Basin was filled to capacity Tuesday
night as Congressman Hakeem Jeffries
met with the Jewish community to discuss
the attempt to stop Iran from producing
nuclear weapons.
Since 2006, the Permanent 5 (United
States, China, France, the United
Kingdom and Russia) and Germany,
known as the P5+1, have negotiated with
Iran to halt their use of nuclear power and
impose sanctions on the nation. A proposal was created with less stringent demands
on Iran in light of talks with China and
Russia.
“The P5+1, under the United States
leadership, committed to the critical goal
of ending all of Iran’s pathways to nuclear
weapons,” community activist Stella
Binkevich said. “However, a lot of the
information around the deal that has been
negotiated leads to many questions about
whether the deal truly accomplishes that
goal. Last spring, Congress passed a bill
that gives them the right to approve or disapprove the deal after reviewing it. ”
To answer some of these questions,
Jeffries invited Dr. Jim Walsh, a Security
Studies Program Research Associate of
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
and The Israel Project’s Managing
Director Omri Ceren to the meeting.
Under the new deal, the P5+1 would
allow Iran to continue to manufacture
nuclear power for the continued life and
growth of its citizens. However, access to
materials will be limited in order to keep
the ability to produce weaponry to a minimum. Cooperation with these demands
will give Iran a specific timetable to be
allowed to return to full nuclear capability. Lack of cooperation will lead to further
sanctions against the nation and possibly
increase the timetable. From a military
standpoint, the U.S. would stand down
from threatening action on Iran and leave
the situation to inspectors from the P5+1
nations, a point dozens of current and past
military representatives support.

Despite the positive actions of the P5+1
– and a possible resolution for a major
issue of Middle East peace – both sides of
the congressional political aisle are split in
opinions of how to vote. Jeffries, however, is taking a different route to his decision than many of his colleagues.
“As I endeavor to arrive at the conclusion with respect to this very weighty
issue that has been presented to all of us
and the United States Congress, I want to
make sure to communicate in the most
intimate fashion possible with the people I
serve,” Jeffries said. “I want to arrive at an
outcome that makes sense for America,
makes sense for Israel, makes sense for
our allies, makes sense for the world.”
Jeffries was joined by members of
Aguda Israel, the Orthodox Union, the
JCC of Marine Park, the JCC of Canarsie
and a host of other organizations to discuss the topic prior to the town hall meeting. In addition to representatives of the
Jewish community, Congresswoman
Yvette Clarke, Assemblywoman Roxanne
Persaud, Councilman Alan Maisel, Kings
County Democratic Chairman Frank
Seddio and Lew Fidler, aide to Brooklyn
Borough President Eric Adams, attended
the meeting.

Church Leaders Warn Of Theft

A house of worship is supposed to be one of the
safest places in our community. However, parishioners at Holy Family Church are being advised to
watch out for pickpocketers after a recent incident
where a woman’s purse was stolen – right in the
middle of Sunday service.
According to an anonymous witness, the suspect
– described as a black man in his early 20s – scoped
out the church and attended the Haitian morning
mass on August 9th. He sat in a pew for 15 minutes
and, while parishioners were praying, the man
allegedly stole a purse from an elderly woman who
was sitting in front of him. Afterwards, he fled the
church and some believe he headed north towards
Conklin Avenue. The witness also said he looked
strange, was dressed all in black and had a knapsack
with him.
Holy Family’s Father Edward Kane said the
NYPD is examining the church’s video surveillance
system.
“Most people in our church weren’t aware that
anything happened,” Father Kane told the 
. “We’re advising women to watch their
purses and if you go up for communion, take your
things with you. To safeguard yourself even more,
put your keys and money in your pocket so you have
your valuables with you at all times.”
Father Kane said this isn’t the first time there’s
been a robbery incident within the church, but
they’re asking the public to be more vigilant during
services.

Our City Is Willing To Pay For Crumbs – Or Cocoa Pebbles!

izzling hot days do more than just make us
break into a sweat, which is our body’s way of
cooling us down. It’s also a sign that we need
to replenish ourselves by drinking water or something that will help replace our electrolytes. Those
who work outside have to deal with the sweltering
elements as well and it takes a toll on your whole
system, right? When you drink something that’s too
sweet – or sub par – you’re not replenishing yourself
– you’re just exhausting your body even more.
The same way Mother Nature’s elements ruin the
human body, it ruins things humans need to facilitate
in order to travel from place to place – namely our
streets and highways. Comptroller Scott Stringer
recently released a claimstat alert, reporting that over
12,000 claims in damage were filed with the city as
a result of horribly paved roads.
Great! To add to this, nearly 6,000 personal injury
claims and close to $138 million was paid out in settlements over the past six years. It doesn’t take too
long of a trek to see the poor conditions on the Belt
Parkway. Sure, it’s nice in the few spots where they
completely repaved and smoothed out the roadway,
but the “defective” spots – as Stringer called them –
cause damage to tires, brakes and axles. Pedestrians
have to hope they don’t injure themselves while
walking too.

So what is the city replenishing their highly trafficked roadways with? If you ask me, they might as
well fill the holes with cocoa pebbles – or bread
crumbs!
On a recent trek to Seaview Park, I was glad to see
that Seaview Avenue in the East 90s was being
repaved. It looked fresh, smooth and ready to be
abused by trucks, cars, cyclists and pedestrians. But
have you ever seen or felt the stuff they’re using to
patch up our roads? Disgustingly, the Department of
Transportation (DOT) seems to do minimal with the
cheap quality of materials they’re provided with to
fix our crumbling streets. After they’ve laid the
asphalt down, crumbs – literally bits that look like
Oreo cookie leftovers – were all over the sidewalks
and it doesn’t seem like they even need time for the
sticky asphalt to settle before allowing traffic to
pummel the fresh pavement. Plus – it’s SUMMERTIME. How can the sweltering heat and sunrays help
the fresh asphalt stay firm enough to sustain hundreds of vehicles?
I’m no engineer but it seems to me that the DOT
uses sub-par materials on our streets to keep the
money rolling in from taxpayers! Gotta resurface the
Belt Parkway every two years? Let’s use the cheapest stuff we can find to ensure that it has to be redone
– ensuring that the money has to come in for repairs!
Let’s get real! The fact that the Belt Parkway had
a total of 706 claims in a six-year period – the 
 in the city – is atrocious! The Belt Parkway is so
overcrowded, overused and is one of the main roads
out of the city that usually takes forever to venture
through. What the hell are they using to fix potholes
when they pop up – granola mix?
We can use Flatlands Avenue near Ralph Avenue
as another example. Councilman Alan Maisel had to
write to the DOT for years, insisting that the street
along Flatlands closest to South Shore High School
needs to be repaved after decades of abuse. I don’t
care if it’s hard to reroute traffic and “decide what
time is best to complete repairs without infringing on
commuters.” One of the things Comptroller Stringer
wants the DOT to do is ensure that street repairs are
completed as quickly as possible so that pedestrians
– and drivers – don’t have to combat uneven road
surfaces. One of the best points of Stringer’s
Claimstat is exploring a complete construction of
certain city streets. While this will cost more than
repaving, it could, he noted, save taxpayers money in
the long haul.

Basketball and Drama Camp is in full swing, and students are putting
the fundamental skills they’ve learned into action each week. On
Monday, Coach Taylor trained his students – boys and girls ranging
from five to 15 years old – with fitness drills. They ran 12 laps, did 100
push ups and ran from foul line to foul line. Then, the young athletes
worked on catch and shooting jump shots from the free throw line.
Once they were all warmed up, basketball players transferred their
skills to the court, playing five on five with each other. The camp is held
every Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at P.S. 276, in
conjunction with the 69th Precinct Community Council. You may see

Family, Football Love Propels Former
Canarsie Chief Standout To Next Level

When Kamari Jones-Hunter takes
the field with the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)
Monroe College football team on Saturday, September 5th, it will bring the
former Canarsie Chiefs star one step
closer to fulfilling his dream of playing at the top level of the sport.
But getting to this point in JonesHunter’s life required overcoming a
great deal of adversity for him and his
family.
Approximately eight years ago, his
mother, Nicole Jones, was hit by a car
in Crown Heights, almost taking her
life. The accident caused her to code
three times. It also resulted in abovethe-knee amputation of both of herlegs, a traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder, followed by
years of physical and occupational
therapy, she said.
A young Jones-Hunter saw the entire accident unfold before his incredulous eyes. Today, the Starrett City
native can barely talk about it. But the
6-foot, 263-pound nose guard uses the
tragic memory and love of his mother
to inspire him on and off the gridiron.
Jones-Hunter started playing the
game at five years old. Football became his life. He would toss a pigskin
in the air for hours at a time and tell
his mother that one day he would make
it to the NFL and take care of her.
“That’s just my fire for football,”
Jones-Hunter, 18, said of his mother.
“When I make it to the NFL, I’m going
to take care of her and then take care
of myself.”
The two have an unbreakable bond.
So it’s no wonder that her accident has
affected Jones-Hunter the way it has.
“It was very difficult, because him
and my niece actually witnessed everything,” Jones said. “He had to go to
counseling.”
But Jones said football has been her
son’s saving grace, helping him get
through the ordeal and keeping him out
of trouble throughout his childhood.
Without his mother and grandfather,
Charles Jones, who attended most of
his games, Jones-Hunter said his success “wouldn’t be the same without
family.”
Moreover, take away the unyielding
love, guidance and support of his strong
family and his passion for football,
his mother said Jones-Hunter might not
have the same opportunities that he has
today.
“I didn’t want him to end up with
the wrong crowd and on the street,”
she said. “Football helped him to stay
focused and on the right track. I think
he would’ve fallen by the wayside, another statistic. I didn’t want him to be
another statistic.”
Jones made sure of that. While mo-
tivation for football rarely lacked, getting her son pumped for the academic
piece needed more relentless poking
and prodding, even as she endured pain
throughout her recovery process.
“I use to say sometimes (to him),
when he was a little bit lazy, ‘The same
drive and force on the field, you need
to carry that over into your academics.’
I think eventually he got it.”
Jones-Hunter’s immediate family
didn’t do it alone. Jones’ sister’s brothers-in-law are the Schulters – brothers who starred as Chiefs and had
tremendous success in other competitive football levels.
Lance enjoyed a 10-year NFL career; Dwayne starred at the University
of Pittsburgh; and Jamal plays professionally in Poland.
However, much of Jones-Hunter’s
success can be also attributed to his
former coach at Canarsie High School,
Kyle Allen, who took the time to help
him develop into an All-Star player and
made sure he kept up the academic
end of high school.
After he played his first year of high
school football at Xaverian in Bay
Ridge, Jones-Hunter — who recorded 67 tackles, an astounding 21 sacks,
an interception, three fumble recoveries, a touchdown and a safety in his
senior year as a Chief — wanted to
transfer closer to home.
It was the words Allen used, and
the care he displayed, that helped the
family finally decide on Canarsie.


The street co-naming received strong support
from school alumni and advocates, who hosted
an online petition and collected signatures doorto-door. Catherine McAuley High School was
located at 710 East 37th Street and served young
women of Brooklyn for more than 70 years.

known for its academic excellence and positive
community impact. Named after Mother
Catherine Elizabeth McAuley who exemplified
public service, the all-girls’ Catholic high school
was designated a Nationally Recognized School
of Excellence - the first and only in my district.
Though it closed in 2013, I am proud that it will
forever live on by co-naming East 37th Street
and Foster Avenue ‘Catherine McAuley High
School Way,’” Williams said. “I would like to
thank Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito
and the Council’s Cultural Affairs Chair Van
Bramer for supporting this initiative, which was
backed by a tremendous amount of alumni and
local residents. I look forward to joining the
community to unveil this important street conaming within the coming months.”
Catherine McAuley High School started out as
a two-year school that prepared young women
for secretarial jobs. Catherine McAuley’s original name was Catherine McAuley Commercial,
and for many years McAuley graduates entered
the workforce after high school. In the 1960’s the
word commercial was dropped from the school’s
name as graduates pursued post-secondary education.
McAuley initially served the daughters of
Irish and Italian immigrants, and as demographics changed, McAuley welcomed the daughters
of the “new” immigrants from the Caribbean and
beyond. English as a Second Language (ESL)
was offered to serve English Language
Learners. School officials said that students,
many of whom are new to the country and have
limited English ability or are below average in
reading and math, can progress as much as three
years during a single school year. The key - small
classes - a ratio of 12 students per teacher.
“Because of its small size, nobody falls through
the cracks,” co-principal Sister Peggy Dempsey
said. “This is a student-centered school.”
In 1991, McAuley became the first and is still
the only all-girls’ Catholic high school in
Brooklyn or Queens to earn the prestigious title,
“Nationally Recognized School of Excellence”
from the U.S. Department of Education. Each
student is encouraged to develop at her own
pace. In 2002, celebrating its 60th anniversary,
McAuley partnered with Boys Hope Girls Hope
of New York opening the first boarding program
for teenage girls in New York City.
For many years, nearly 100 percent of
McAuley students graduated on time and were
accepted to college. Many earned college scholarships at a rate at or above that of other Catholic
high schools in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, the
beloved school that was built during World War
II has endured many storms and difficult times,
was a victim of the economic downturn, having
opened in 1942 and closed in 2013.


recently went missing. On Wednesday,
August 5th, 72-year-old Leon Chan
went missing from his East 34th Street
home. He was last seen that day at
about 11 a.m. and is described as a
black male, 5’4” and 140 pounds. Leon
was wearing a plaid shirt and blue
jeans.
On Monday, August 3rd, 14-yearold Odyssey Batchop disappeared. She
is described as a black female, 5’2” and
140 pounds. She was last seen at her
Sheepshead Bay home on Batchelder
Street at about 12 p.m. and was wearing a gray jean shirt, a red t-shirt and
red Jordan sneakers.

As far as how proud his family is of him,
Jones-Hunter’s mother lights up at just the mention of him going to college.
“I am beyond proud,” she said. “I am at a loss
for words. I’m very proud of his accomplishments, on and off the field.
“He’s so proud of him. My father is on cloud
nine,” she added.
And why not? Jones-Hunter, whose dream school
is Miami University, is getting a shot at playing at
the next level – all because of family and love of
football, not to mention years of hard work and
dedication in the classroom, weight room and
gridiron.


Graffiti was a big problem all over the city back in the
1980’s, and Canarsie was no exception. The picture on
the left was featured in our August 1989 issue. The wall,
which borders the Department of Sewers and runs along
Flatlands Avenue near Ralph Avenue, was covered with
all sorts of illegal “street art.” Today, that area, although
a bit overgrown, is graffiti clear. However, if you walk a
few steps east toward East 76th Street, the wall bordering the Department of Highways is a different story…it
still has spray painted inscriptions adorning its wall. If

Goals Galore At Caribbean Cup All Star Classic, Postseason Awaits

After the conclusion of preliminary play, the best
of the best took the pitch in an exhibition for bragging rights before postseason action begins.
The New York Caribbean Cup hosted its annual
All Star Classic last Sunday, with an East versus
West exhibition headlining a tripleheader of games
at the Thomas Jefferson Sports Complex.
Although the eastern zone houses three powerhouse clubs, the western zone were the victors at
the all star classic with the final score of 5-3.
The eastern zone all stars came out sharp, connecting on all cylinders with a 2-0 lead early.
The western zone all stars were not too cohesive
to begin the game, sending multiple shots out of
play, far past the goal or goalkeeper.
The tide quickly shifted, as those awry shots
began to translate into on goal targets that lead to
three consecutive goals to put the western zone
ahead.
After exchanging goals and a late penalty kick,
the western zone all stars claimed victory and bragging rights, lead by the boot of Eugene Kirwan,
which contributed a hat trick.
“You can’t win them all,” said Arthur Mikes,
manager of the eastern all stars, “we scored some
goals but just couldn’t keep up.”
Females entered the pitch for the first time this
cup season as the Cambria Heights Girls SC challenged Nehemiah International Girls SC in the first
match of the day.
The teams appeared to be feeling each other out
for much of the first half, neither one creating many
chances.
That quickly changed in the second half as
Cambria Heights Girls SC became more aggressive
in forcing the tempo and getting out in the open.
Ebony Birch was the beneficiary as she capitalized on a chance, beating the goalkeeper to the far
right post for the opening goal for her club.
Nehemiah International Girls SC would soon
respond, as Iyesha Ollivierre would not be denied
after beating her marker with a skill move and
shooting the ball to the bottom far post for the
equalizer.
The decisive goal eluded both clubs, resulting in
a draw at 1-1.
“It was a good pre-season game, not the intense
level that we’re used to but it’s coming there,” said
Ben Abiona, manager of the Cambria Heights Girls
SC.
Brooklyn Soca Lions Academy defeated Hota
Bavaria SC, 5-2, in the second match of the day.
After conceding a goal in the opening minutes,
the winning club responded moments later with an
equalizer and did not look back, overpowering the
opposing club.
With the All Star Classic in the books, postseason play is set to commence next week as the top
four teams from the respective conferences qualify
for the playoffs.
Goal difference decided the order of the eastern
zone with St. Kitts and Nevis claiming first seed,
Haiti in second and defending champions Jamaica
finishing third. Guyana placed fourth in the eastern
zone.
In the western zone, St. Lucia comfortably
claimed first seed, followed by St. Kitts and Nevis
then Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica rounding
out the final spot.
The quarter-finals will begin next week with
Haiti versus Trinidad and Tobago, followed by St.
Kitts and Nevis versus Dominica in a rematch of
the final game of preliminary play.

Prevent Avoidable Tragedies By Installing Window Guards
As the weather gets warmer, the Health
Department and the Department of Housing
Preservation and Development (HPD) remind New
Yorkers that properly installed window guards are
an important safety measure to prevent children
from falling out of open windows. They are urging
New Yorkers to make sure window guards are in
place and properly installed. Children under the age
of five account for two-thirds of all falls in New
York City, and in 2014, there were six falls from
windows that should have had window guards in
place, three of which resulted in the death of a
child.
“Children are our most valuable resource. They
are curious and imaginative but might not understand the risks of playing near an open, unguarded
window,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary
Bassett. “That’s why parents and caregivers need to
not only make sure window guards are properly
installed, but also keep beds, chairs, ladders and
other climbable objects away from windows.
Window falls can happen in a second, but window
guards can prevent them from happening at all.”
“Installing window guards is a simple way to
prevent falls that could lead to serious injury, and it
could save the life of a child,” said HPD
Commissioner Vicki Been. “If your apartment
needs window guards, or if you don’t know
whether they’re properly installed, ask your landlord as soon as possible. If your landlord doesn’t
respond, call 311 to request an inspection by HPD.
If you have a child 10 years old or younger, take
action now and have window guards installed – it’s
the law, and it could save a life.”
Window guard installation is a shared responsibility for owners and tenants. City law requires the
owner of any building with three or more units to
properly install approved window guards in an
apartment where a child 10 years of age or younger
lives or attends child care, and they are recommended in any apartment that children regularly
visit.
Building owners must obtain this information
from their tenants when a new lease is entered into
or when a lease is renewed. They are also required
to send every tenant a notification form once a year,
so that any new need for a window guard may be
reported. Tenants are required to fill out the forms
accurately and return them to building management.
The Window Guard Law requires building owners to install window guards in any apartment
where the tenant requests them. Although not
required in one- or two-family homes, people with
young children living in these types of dwellings
should consider installing guards in any window
not used as an emergency exit.
If a building owner refuses to install window
guards, tenants should call 311 or go to 311 Online
(www.nyc.gov/311) to file a complaint with HPD.
Building owners may also call 311 to report tenants
who refuse to allow guards to be installed as
required by law.

One of the problems with this seems to be the
city’s fiscal budget allocations. If you’ve attended a Community Board 18 meeting where they
review the slew of street repairs that need to be
made, the city somehow escapes addressing
these infrastructure problems. They respond to
the board, stating that the streets we requested to
be fixed are “not a priority.” Thanks DOT! The
money may not be in their budget and seem
worth spending on a little community like
Canarsie, but isn’t paying attention to community input the beginning of the process when it
comes to improvements? If they’d address our
requests from the get-go, maybe the enlarged
potholes and craters wouldn’t lead to accidents
and subsequently millions of dollars in settlements. Or, perhaps because the claim money
comes from the Comptroller’s office – and not
the DOT – the DOT doesn’t care about their
agency falling behind on much-needed repairs.
And now for the granola mix…Could the city
avoid paying out all of these settlements if they
used a better grade or quality of asphalt for our
streets and stopped patching up those potholes
temporarily with what I call black oatmeal?
C’mon! Is the DOT using the same materials
on our streets that they’d use on major freeways? Some vehicles and – even motorcyclists
– use our roads like it’s the Indy 500! Our city
buses carry hundreds of people every hour along
“quaint” streets and the conditions of our streets
can’t handle the volume of drivers that exist.
Why are they patching things up with asphalt
that warps, reopens, cracks and opens so easily
– and can’t outlast the weather?
However the DOT plans on fixing our roads
long-term, I’m sure there are plenty of ground
up graham crackers, flaxseed and instant potato
mix flakes in their milling trucks! Happy trails!

The third annual Brooklyn Real Property Inc. (BRP) picnic was held on Saturday, August 8th and provided a day of fun and relaxation at Fort Tilden

Stories Of Hope
The JASA Senior Center at the Hebrew Educational Society (H.E.S.)
hosted the Witness Project of Harlem – a breast and cervical cancer
project focusing on African-American women. The Witness Project
encourages survivors to openly tell their stories of diagnosis and treatment. Their aim is to educate the community on the importance of cancer screening to save lives. Since 2001, the Witness Project of Harlem
has reached out to over 3,500 women. They are dedicated to continuing their mission so that they can reach as many people as possible.

problem - how do you hold a NIGHT Out Against

Black Community Says Mayor
Does Not Deserve Their Vote
Dear Editor,
De Blasio’s support in the black community actually fell by over a third since the 2013 election,
because the community is responding to his big developer real estate policies that are pushing blacks
out of their neighborhoods, as well as his divisive
tactics within the black community, pitting leaders
against each other to suit his agenda
The Mayor will soon see a drop in the polls from
black voters also because the message coming from
black leaders is that he is very divisive. They are
tired of failing schools, increased shootings from
gangs with no real plan to reduce the violence, lack
of job opportunities for young people, non-affordable housing, the privatization and evictions within
NYCHA and the fact we have a mayor that has isolated himself, never holding a Town Hall Meeting
in their communities to address all their concerns.
A mayor who only holds press conferences surrounded by his supporters and not to hear the real
concerns of the community shows a huge lack of
respect. I expect his poll numbers in the black community to fall as well, and no matter how much he
goes to beg Al Sharpton for his help, even that support won’t bare any fruit as Sharpton is only a
leader, not the leader of the black community, and it
amazes us all that de Blasio hasn’t gotten that memo.
However, he will get a reality check come the next
election.

Student Wins Scholarship
Kingsborough Community College
(KCC) announced that June graduate
Najlaa Bouras is among 90 recipients
nationwide of the 2015 Jack Kent Cook
Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship,
which provides up to $40,000 a year
for up to three years of study at a fouryear school. It is the largest private
scholarship for students transferring
from two-year community colleges to
four-year baccalaureate institutions in
the country.
Moroccan-born Najlaa, who speaks
four languages and recently graduated
with an Associate’s degree in Liberal
Arts and Sciences, will attend Smith
College in the fall to earn her Bachelor’s degree in American Government
and Politics. She is a 2015 Dean’s List
student, a participant in the Honors
Program, a member of Phi Theta Kappa and is active in the Student World
Assembly and the Criminal Justice
Club. She was also selected to participate in the Salzburg Global Seminar
in Austria. Najlaa received glowing
letters of recommendation from Professors Mary Lynn Navarro, Rick Repetti, Michael Sokolow and Howard
Grynspan.

Famous Canarsie
Autograph Collector Dies at 84
Louis Max Schlamowitz , long
time resident of Canarsie,
passed away May 7, 2015 at the
age of 84. Louis resided in
Ocala, Florida for the past 4
years. He was well known in the
Canarsie area for being the infamous pen pal of various world
leaders, government officials
and entertainers.
Louis will be remembered for
many things including being an
artistic florist designer, singing
Frank Sinatra songs on the old
trolley cars of the 1940s and 50s
in Canarsie and serving his
country in the Korean conflict
from 1952-1954. Most importantly, he will be remembered
as a wonderful father and father-in-law by his daughter
Abbi and her husband; an amazing grandfather by his
grandchildren Danielle, Larissa, and Joshua and a
beloved great grandfather by his great grandson Sergio.
Louis was laid to rest at New Montefiore Cemetery next
to his devoted wife Dora.



Candle lighting for Friday evening parshas
RE’EH is 7:38 p.m. Services begin with Mincha at
7:30 p.m.
Shabbat morning Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Ellul,
the last month of the Hebrew year services begin
at 9 a.m. Services will include the 3rd of the 7 special readings of Consolation from Isaiah to be read
before Rosh Hashana.
Beginning Sunday the 2nd day of Rosh Chodesh
and continuing until the eve of Rosh Hashana the
Shofar will be sounded every weekday morning in
anticipation of the coming High Holy Days.
Rabbi Leibowitz’s Sermon is at 10:30. Our sisterhood hosts this week’s Kiddush and the congregating is cordially invited to participate.
Shabbos afternoon youth groups for boys meet
at 7:00 p.m. All youngsters are invited. Mincha is
at 7:30 followed by seudah shelishis, Shabbos ends
with Maariv and Havdala at 8:39 p.m.
Services for the coming week will be conducted
each evening at 7:25 p.m., Sunday at 8 a.m. and
Monday through Friday at 7 a.m.

Rabbi Joshua Minkin, President Leonard Strum,
the Officers and Trustees, extend the Congregation’s
invitation to join us for Sabbath Services, Friday
evening at 8PM, and Saturday morning at 10AM.
Following Friday services, please join us for an Oneg
Shabbat, and after Saturday services, you are invited
to join us for a Kiddush.
We are a Modern Egalitarian Congregation offering a place within our Sanctuary for all who wish to
pray with us. If you are not fluent in Hebrew, that’s
okay. You will be able to participate in English in
much of our service. Come meet old friends and
make some new ones when joining us in service. The
Ritual Committee has sent out the Holiday seating
chart. Please make certain to mark your selection and
return it to the Temple office.
We are holding a food drive during the upcoming
holiday season. All donations will be accepted during
office hours, and can also be left after services.
We wish good health to all who are ailing. If you
would like to add a loved one to our Mi Shebeirach
list, please call the Temple office. Temple Emanu-El
recognizes the Jewish Community’s commitment to
Canarsie, and its surrounding areas.
We follow the belief that our Temple is a house of
prayer for ALL people, and all who come in peace

College Fundraiser Brings
Awareness To Urban Farming
Nearly 300 guests attended
Kingsborough
Community
College’s (KCC) 10th Annual
Seaside Splash fundraiser recently,
which raised $185,000 to provide
critically-needed financial support
for students. Seaside Splash, which
has raised close to $2 million in the
past 10 years, focuses attention on
students who directly benefit from
the financial contributions toward
their educational dreams. Ten such
students were featured in the event
program and in a short video, highlighting KCC’s new message of
“Dreams Begin Here.”
“Students get the chance to meet
and thank their benefactors at
Seaside Splash,” said KCC
President Farley Herzek. “It’s a
chance for them to say thank you in
person when they can talk about
their accomplishments and plans for
continuing toward the completion of
a four-year degree.” The ‘farm-totable’ dining experience included
items sourced from various local
farms, emphasizing the college’s
continuing responsibility to a sustainable food system. Guests also
enjoyed a farmer’s market-style
“pop-up” that included a microgreens tasting of Red Rambo radishes, mustard mix, pea shoots and gar-
net red amaranth — all provided by
KCC’s Urban Farm.
“The KCC Urban Farm provides
students with opportunities to have
an intense, hands-on and delicious
learning experience,” said Center
for Economic & Workforce
Development Executive Director
Babette Audant.The evening’s featured student speaker, Anna
Makogon, who graduated in June,
lamented to the crowd amid laughter
about missing the perfect 4.0 GPA
because of “…the one and only final
course in Psychology, in which I
received a B+,” as she thanked the
attendees for their generosity.

