WELCOME
Whether this is your first roller derby experience or you
are a seasoned and loyal fan –
WE ARE HAPPY YOU ARE HERE!!
Roller derby is more than just a hard hitting sport, it’s a
place where women of all sizes, backgrounds and
skill levels can compete in an intensely athletic
and supportive environment. It’s a chance to
give back to our community through service
and volunteering. It’s also a heck of a
good time, for skaters and fans alike.
Roller Derby can be confusing
so, stop at our information table
if you have any questions. After
the second bout step out to the
main concourse and meet our skaters.
Don’t be shy, we want to meet YOU!
Most importantly, Thank You for supporting us and for making 2013
an unforgettable season!
THIS IS DERBY
ABOUT DENVER ROLLER DOLLS
The Denver Roller Dolls (DRD) was formed by 20 skaters back
in December of 2005. We remain 100% skater-owned and
skater-operated. This means we spend as much time running
our business as we do training and competing.
THIS ISN’T YOUR GRANDMA’S ROLLER DERBY.
Unlike the choreographed stunts and sensational drama you
may remember from television, modern flat track roller derby
is a fiercely competitive sport. The hard hits and fast skating
are as real as the hard floor and bruises that sometimes occur.
We take safety and fitness seriously and require all of our
skaters to participate in a grueling training regimen overseen
by experienced skaters. Still, we enjoy playing up our derby
personas, donning fantastical uniforms, and creating funny derby
names. While this adds to the unique and quirky nature of this
classic American sport - it doesn’t take away from its athleticism.
From the very beginning, we have been dedicated to developing
and promoting the sport of roller derby, training
skaters for local, national and inter-league
competition, and strengthening the
communities in which we live. We
promote the empowerment
of women and we strive to
create community through
service and volunteerism.
LEAGUE COMPOSITION
The Denver Roller Dolls are a Full Member League of
the Womens Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) the international governing body of women’s flat track
roller derby. There are currently 212 Full Member
Leagues and 83 Apprentice Leagues playing under a
unified rule set and code of conduct.
The Denver Roller Dolls League is made up of seven
teams: five home teams and two travel teams. Our
home teams are the Bad Apples, the Electrocuties, the
Green Barrettes, the Orange Crushers, and the Shotgun
Betties. When skaters have passed a standardized
rules and on-skate skills test, they are drafted to one of
these teams. These teams primarily bout against each
other for bragging rights although they will occasionally
take on teams from other leagues. The Denver Roller
Dolls are growing and the level of roller derby talent
continues to reach new heights. Skaters on our home
teams may practice and scrimmage together during
the season but they are fierce competitors on the
track! 2013 is proving to be an exciting year for DRD
as we continue to bring new strategy and game play to
the sport. Skaters who show dedication and talent to
compete at a higher level may be drafted to one of two
travel teams IN ADDITION TO their home team. The
Mile High Club is our All-Star squad. They represent
the league at a international level, playing WFTDAsanctioned bouts that determine the league’s WFTDA
ranking. Bruising Altitude is our second travel team
created to give more skaters the opportunity to gain
interleague bouting experience.
Two 14-skater teams play two 30-minute periods. Each period consists of multiple
"jams." Each jam is an opportunity for both teams to score points, and ends after 2
minutes or when the Lead Jammer calls off the jam.
It is legal for a player to block her opponents with her hips,
rear, and shoulders. It is not legal to block to the back, to trip,
elbow, or to sass officials. Players committing
illegal actions are penalized 1

point for each opposing player they pass
legally. The opposing Blockers will try to stop
the Jammer, while helping their own Jammer
through the pack.
During the first pass, the first Jammer to pass
all skaters in the pack legally is Lead Jammer. Lead
Jammer status is signaled by the officials blowing
two short whistle blasts and pointing at the Lead
Jammer.
Jammers wear a star on
their helmets and are
the scoring players for
each team. The Jammers
attempt to pass the
opponents as many times
as possible by sprinting
around the track and
lapping the pack.

only Blocker that is

thus becoming the new
Jammer and gaining the
ability to score points.

The pack is formed by the
largest group of Blockers
with players from each
team on the track.
The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is a membership association for
female roller derby leagues playing flat track roller derby worldwide. The WFTDA
offers benefits and support to member and affiliate leagues, and provides guidance
and resources to the sport of flat track derby. Currently, the WFTDA represents tens
of thousands of athletes and officials, in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and
Australia, and is recognized as the guiding authority on the sport.
