Frank Baum’s children’s book and American fairy tale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz came out in 1900 he surely never foresaw its brilliant future. His creation has become a cultural touchstone, still reimagined for audiences more than a century later. The story of the Kansas farm girl Dorothy who journeys home from a magic land (with the help of a lion, a scarecrow and a tin man) while evading an evil witch and seeking a wizard’s wisdom, has given birth to a bouquet of television, film and theater versions and is referenced in everything from comics to commercials. film in which Diana Ross portrays Dorothy as a Harlem schoolteacher and pop king Michael Jackson was the Scarecrow. Now, The Wiz LIVE! LIVE!,, the newest member of the Oz family, also has given us this soundtrack featuring the acting and music by the likes of R&B artist Ne-Yo, who wrote an original song for the show, as well as a cast that includes the superstars Common and Mary J. Blige and the genre-bending musical goddess Queen Latifah as the Wizard. Yes, the Wizard (or Wiz) can be a man or a woman, and one can “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” or “Ease On Down the Road.” Dorothy and her family can be any race. The language, the music and the characters of Oz continue on a creative trajectory that exemplifies a quintessentially American thirst for reinvention and expansion. Elton John named an album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Road,, little girls wear ruby slippers at Halloween and little dogs are named Toto. The 1939 The Wizard of Oz film starring Judy Garland as Dorothy constantly tops best-film lists, and the contrarian Oz story Wicked has been on Broadway more than a decade. Enjoy. However each new generation comes upon the story, its endurance and universal appeal lie in familiar themes. Growing up, making friends, finding the strength (and courage, brains, and heart) to push through adversity and fear. It is about discovering that the phrase “There’s no place like home” can refer to the comforts of family or the joy of finding the essential truths about yourself or your culture, or whatever else you hold dear. after her dog, Toto, as the farmhands prepare the house for the storm. Dorothy lives with her Aunt Em after the death of her parents, but she doesn’t feel at home there. Aunt Em lets Dorothy know she is loved and encourages her to figure out who she is and what she wants from life; Aunt Em will always be there for her ((The Feeling ). We Once Had). The latest incarnation of the tale is The Wiz LIVE! a television event broadcast on NBC on Dec. 3, 2015. The live production of a theatrical performance, which incorporates special acrobatic effects by Cirque du Soleil, is based on the groundbreaking 1975 Broadway musical The Wiz Wiz,, which featured an AfricanAmerican cast and a range of musical styles. The Wiz took home seven Tony® Awards (including Best Musical) and furthered acceptance of all-black big-budget musicals on Broadway. It even morphed into a 1978 feature – Felicia R. Lee Cultural critic and former New York Times reporter ural Kansas: A farm and barn are seen in the distance. A bad storm is brewing and R Dorothy Gale is carrying her suitcase in yet another attempt to run away. She chases Dorothy is separated from Aunt Em and gets caught in the ““Tornado.”” Dorothy wakes up surrounded by Munchkins and discovers that her house has landed on Evvamean, the Wicked Witch of the East. Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North, informs her that she is now in Munchkinland in the good ole U.S. of Oz. The residents of Oz are filled with gratitude towards Dorothy, but the only thing Dorothy wants is to get back to her childhood home of Omaha, Nebraska. Addaperle and the Munchkins ). Addaperle gives can’t help her get home, but they know who can ((He’s the Wizard). Dorothy Evvamean’s silver slippers, and the Munchkins tell Dorothy to follow the Yellow Brick Road which will take her to Emerald City. Dorothy is uncertain about the journey ahead but knows everything will be alright as ““Soon As I Get Home.”” As she makes her way down the Yellow Brick Road, she encounters the Scarecrow surrounded by crows. He informs Dorothy that he lacks ). a brain and that he believes life’s cards are stacked against them ((You Can’t Win). She believes that the Wiz could give the Scarecrow the brains he longs for, and they ““Ease On Down the Road”” making more new friends along the way. They next encounter the Tin Man who is in desperate need of a heart as well as some oil for his rusted joints ((Slide Some Oil to ). Dorothy helps the Tin Man with the oil and invites him to come along to meet the Wiz to Me). see about getting him a heart. They continue their journey and are stopped in their tracks by the ferocious roar of a cowardly lion with a false bravado ((Mean Ole Lion). ). The Lion joins his new friends in the hope that the Wiz can give him courage. The four travelers suddenly find themselves lost as it gets dark outside. Dorothy resists as a Kalidah attempts to steal her silver slippers. They all end up doing battle with the Kalidah creatures. Everyone does their part except for the Lion who is too scared to be of use. Dorothy comforts and inspires him ((Be a Lion)) and they continue on their way. They see Emerald City in the distance, but first they must get through the treacherous Poppy Fields. The Poppies try to entrance them and prevent them from leaving, but the Lion takes charge and, in a brave and clever move, he dances with the Poppies one by one until they discover he has tied them all up. The Lion has impressed his friends, and they are now all free to head on to the Emerald City. The Bouncer tries to keep them from entering Emerald City until he learns that Dorothy is responsible for the death of the Wicked Witch of the East. Wiz is a fraud and is not all-powerful, but is actually just a magician’s assistant from Nebraska. The Wiz, in turn, makes the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion realize they had a brain, heart and courage all along. With the help of the four friends, the Wiz comes to the conclusion that a solitary existence hiding behind the guise of the Wiz is no life at all. The Wiz bids the citizens of Oz adieu ((Y’all Got It)) and offers to give Dorothy a balloon ride back to Omaha. Dorothy realizes that her home is truly in Kansas, as home isn’t where you live; it’s where you love. Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, appears and lets Dorothy know she’s been watching over her the whole time, like her Aunt Em does. Glinda informs Dorothy that the power to return home has been hers all along ). Just click your heels together three times and think of ““Home.” (Believe in Yourself). – Van Dean The four friends enter the dazzling and futuristic Emerald City and seek out the Wiz. They ). After hearing what finally meet the all-powerful Wiz ((So You Wanted to See the Wizard). they’ve come for, the Wiz tells the Tin Man he is lucky he can’t feel, as it means he won’t know pain. Tin Man tells the Wiz everything he is missing out on by not having a heart ((What Would ). I Do If I Could Feel). The Wiz informs the four friends he will grant their wishes as long as they do something for him first: kill the Wicked Witch of the West! Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion build up the nerve to face this incredible challenge together ((We Got It). ). Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, has imposed a “corporate takeover” of Evvamean’s part of Oz and enforces her will on the people. Her not-so-sunny disposition is quickly apparent (Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News). ). Evillene learns that Dorothy and her friends are on their way to kill her. She dispatches her Winged Warriors to capture them and bring them to her. They are forcefully put to work in Evillene’s lair and their fate is looking very grim. As Evillene threatens Lion with a knife, Dorothy grabs one of Lion’s water buckets and throws the water in the Wicked Witch’s face. The water destroys the witch – her dark hold on the Winkies and other underlings is now broken. Everyone rejoices as it’s ““A Brand New Day.” The friends head back to Emerald City only to find out they’ve been banned. They trick the Bouncer into leaving his post and they seek out the Wiz once again. They quickly discover the 7 1. Prologue Orchestra 8 2.
