November 2015 BISHOP HIGH SCHOOL “Where Badger Pride Never Dies” Academics ATTENDANCE: BHS campus attendance is currently at 96.15% This percentage is up from last six weeks and every grade level has increased their attendance percentage. ACT Testing Dates: December 12, 2015 SAT Testing Dates: December 5, 2015 Scholarship Information Night Wednesday, December 9th – BHS Library Coach Moody and Mrs. Vilches will be conducting this event, which is a wonderful opportunity for senior parents to come and learn about the scholarships available to graduating seniors. Save the date and come join us. Representatives from the organizations supplying the scholarships will be onsite to answer yor questions and to supply tips for applying and obtaining scholarships. Freshman – JADE CONTRERAS Jade is described as a student who shows great responsibility and accountability for her grades. She is willing to help other students who are stuggling academically and is available to help all her peers. Jade is the secretary for the Freshmen class and a tutor for the newly established peer tutor program. Not only does Jade excel academically, she is also an excellent athlete. All while keeping her GPA up, Jade participates in volleyball, basketball, and softball. Her favorite subjects are ELA and Algebra I and in her spare time, writes poetry and listens to music. Sophomore – MICHAEL BISHOP Michael is a very polite young man and comes to school every day with a great attitude. He is a quiet, hard working student who puts forth effort on all assignments and participates in class. In addition to his class success, Michael is the basketball manager and a Badger baseball player. Michael truly is a model citizen and always helps and respects others in our school community. Junior – LUCAS BALBOA Lucas is an officer of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and is very involved in the Bishop High School Color Guard. Recently, he tried out and made the team for the TAMUK Winter Guard. Lucas shows great leadership in taking the initiative for many of the organizations in which he belongs. He is a good example of happiness because he is always smiling and says hello as he goes down the hallway. Lucas is a member of DECA and also plays tennis. November 2015 Senior – AARON COBOS Aaron is a polite, well-mannered, studious, athletic, and a great supporter of his peers, are all adjectives that can be used to describe Aaron. His teachers applaud his work ethic and determination and note that he is always engaged and willing to help others. Aaron’s favorite subject is math, however he states that athletics is the best part about the school day. Aaron is a member of the National Honor Society, HOSA, and competes in cross country, basketball, track, and tennis. In his spare time, Aaron plays guitar and works on perfecting his 3-point shot. Upon graduation, Aaron plans to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio and pursue a degree in Physical Therapy. . Extra-Curricular Activities Basketball season is here and all teams are off to a fantastic start. During the month of October, HOSA adopted a donation campaign called "Socktober", a month dedicated to collecting and donating socks for the less fortunate during the cold winter months. Pictured is some of our officers, (left to right: Cynthia Granados, Valerie Herrera, Krupa Jiva, and Heather Seiders), donating 300 pairs of new socks to the Good Samaritan Homeless Shelter in Corpus Christi, Texas Give a Kid a Book 5K Fun Run – NHS project by Derrick Hinojosa November 2015 Derrick, senior NHS member, organized a community project to help raise money to buy a book for every student at Bishop Primary. He coordinated a 5K Fun Run with the help of several NHS members, Bishop Police Department, Laura Petro, and Penny Leake. 0ver 50 runners registered for the event that started at Bishop High School. Community leaders sponsored the run with their charitable donation-a special thanks to Mike and Brandi Smith, D’yan Lopez Garza, Tanya Lawhon and Kingsville Nursing and Rehab. A total of $775 was raised and given to the school to order books for their students. Derrick and his friends did an excellent job registering late entries, timing the runners and coordinating the route. His next project will help raise funds for the Bishop Badger Baseball team. GREAT JOB Derrick! Aaron Cardona signs with Stephen F. Austin With his family, friends, and coaches present, Aaron signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Stephen F. Austin. Way to go Aaron, the Bishop community is proud of you and we look forward to watching you play! KEDT Challenge Team November 2015 BHS Challenge Team recently competed against the Carroll Tigers. If you are interested in seeing how well they did, please watch the episode on January 28th at 7pm. Outstanding job to Aaric, Nathan, Cassidy, Carrli, Raney, David, and their sponsor, Ms. Vassaur. Inside the Classroom In Mrs. Martinez’ Anatomy and Physiology Classes, the students constructed 3D models of the layers of the skin. This was a project that took the students a couple of days to complete but accomplishing this helps them to learn about the different parts of the skin. Students in Mrs. Trice’s classroom are using technology on a daily basis. Currently they are working with a Computer Science Google Program. Extras Every child, every seat, every day, on time! November 2015 Congratulations to our 2nd six weeks attendacnce winners…..the Sophomore Class, with a 96.93% attendance rate. Thank you to Celanese for sponsoring their treat!!! Gobble, Gobble!
