ANNUAL REPORT 2 014 2015 Board of Directors Dear friends, Because of you, 2014 was a year of progress and growth at Birthline. God blessed your giving and in total, more than 3,700 people aged 14-50 were served, along with 296 babies! Your prayers, charitable support and volunteer efforts made all the Renee Anderson President George Sjogren Vice President difference in our ability to provide hope and healing, education, and material support. On behalf of the students, young adults, expectant parents, unborn children and infants, we thank you. A few highlights: Programs and Services: We expanded our sexual integrity, relationship and abstinence education programs. By doing so, we expect to see more people make healthy life choices and Nadine Pullis Secretary Mark Berg-Arnold Treasurer reduce unintended pregnancies. And, we served a record number of women and men in our Stepping Stones incentive program; supporting life-affirming decisions, pre-natal health and long term family stability. Finances: The $30,000 Matching Grant challenge offered by the A&B Winstrom Christian Family Foundation was a resounding success. A special thank you to all the donors who went above and Peg Imholte Fr. Jerry Dalseth beyond to help us raise $39,239 – all of it generously matched by the Winstroms! Stewardship: While we have always strived to be principled stewards of the resources entrusted to us, this year, we raised the bar. In our commitment to apply the highest standards of excellence, we have begun the rigorous process to meet all the Accountability Standards set by the Charities Review Council. You Lynn Schnettler Dr. Robert Stocker can be confident that you are supporting a capable, trustworthy organization. Over the years, we’ve seen countless stories of life unfold; and it is common for people to stop by and give us an update. It’s a good reminder that our legacy is not in the numbers we serve each year, but in the impact our services have on families in this community for generations to come! Sheila Leavell 2 Carrie Tripp Executive Director Elisa Schneider We are pleased to share this report with you. Please contact us if Diane Symanietz and Steve Torborg retired after 6+ years of service. you would like more information. Soon after, they both became actively involved. Kevin served in the “Men of Birthline” mentor program to provide guidance to young fathers, and was elected to the Board of Directors in 2004. Amy has a history of helping with Birthline’s signature event, Evening for Life and regularly prays for Birthline and the women and men who need our services. According to the Kluesners, “Financially, Birthline comes first in our nonprofit charitable giving. We believe abortion is the greatest human life crisis of our time, and doing our part to protect the unborn - and their mothers and fathers - is the reason we give.” They recognize the value of providing compassionate care and practical support to help vulnerable women understand they have positive choices available to them. And, they appreciate that pregnancy support centers, like Birthline, help in many ways: physically, emotionally, financially and spiritually. The Kluesners prefer to work behind the scenes to support their favorite cause. Encouraging others to learn about the need, whether through church or community engagement, is a way of life for them. Sara Wolf, Kevin and Amy “...Birthline comes first in our nonprofit charitable giving,” says Kevin. “...doing our part to protect the unborn – and their mothers and fathers – is the reason we give.” Development Director describes them, “Whether they are bringing in a generous check, or dropping off a box of diapers, Kevin and Amy remain very humble in their giving. Whenever they are recognized for their contribution, they are quick to point out, it’s not about them”. They have seen the impact of Birthline’s work in the community and know the free and confidential support has saved countless lives. “Birthline has an outstanding, dedicated staff who are committed to giving accurate information so women can make informed decisions about their pregnancy options. We see this is their vocation, and they share their gifts to the fullest. They treat everyone with dignity and respect, serving with unconditional love” says Amy. Kevin adds, “They don’t try to be a bigger organization than is needed to get the work done. We appreciate their focus on stewardship”. 4 They are confident that Birthline’s mission will impact the community in such a way that a culture of respect for all life will be seen more and more in generations to come. They taught me how to go about having healthy relationships, standards, and to set goals for my life.”. —Andrew, age 23 Stories of LIFE Kelsey and Owen Kelsey came to Birthline feeling confused and scared about her pregnancy. Her family and boyfriend had been abusive to her and she had nowhere to turn. In a previous pregnancy, she placed her child for adoption and it was a positive experience for her. With this pregnancy, she felt uncertain. Kelsey struggled with low selfesteem and never thought she was capable to parent a child. After coming to Birthline, she was able to find a safe place to live and make positive decisions about her future. She established a budget, learned about the basics of parenting, and moved on from the negative relationships in her life. Kelsey now walks with a confidence and adores her son, Owen. She has created new and healthy relationships and cannot imagine her life without her baby. Emily, Derrick & Addisyn Emily and Derrick found out they were going to have a baby together in 2014 having hardly even known each other as a result of a one night party. The news of her pregnancy shocked both of them. They started coming to Birthline for direction in life and in their relationship. They were trying to get through college and had a lot ahead of them. The thought of a baby, with practically a stranger, seemed overwhelming. How could they keep this baby, finish college, and get a job? Emily also had fears that she would not know anything about caring for a baby and keeping one safe. They began to come to appointments together, took relationship assessments, communication assessments, and learned about coparenting, and baby safety. Through the course of these classes, their relationship grew and they developed a deep commitment for each other and their baby. They are now looking into pre-marital counseling classes, Derrick has purchased a house, he is finishing college, and has a job all lined up. Baby Addisyn has brought a joy to both of them they never knew possible. We were originally founded as Birthright, but became independent in mid-1980 and changed our name to Birthline. In the last 44 years, we have served more than 75,000 women, men and infants, and relied on the generosity of hundreds of volunteers to accomplish our work. Our purpose has always been to offer services to support women and men facing an unplanned or crisis pregnancy. To meet the changing need in the community, Birthline has worked diligently to address the ongoing medical, social, physical, financial, emotional and spiritual needs of our clients; and has enhanced programs to support improved pregnancy outcomes, family stability, and selfsufficiency. We have also maintained a strong connection with a variety of community resources to further benefit those we serve. Since 2001, a growing focus has been placed on abstinence education in middle and high schools through Birthline’s HEART program. It has been the catalyst for equipping teens with the skills necessary to have healthy relationships and set positive boundaries. In 2013, we expanded that program to include outreach to college students, where we have been sharing the same message of sexual integrity through our EMERGE program. All services remain free of charge and are provided in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental manner. 2014 INCOME Treasure Chest Private Contributions In-kind Contributions Government Grants Private grants Unrestricted Special Event Miscellaneous - interest $ $ $ $ $ $ $ 51,000 150,90 25,000 79,707 80,550 69,950 80 TOTAL REVENUE $ 457,188 EXPENSE HEART & EMERGE Programs Pregnancy Consulting / Advocacy STEPPING STONES Management and General Fundraising $ 74,595 $ 97,047 $ 155,800 $ 45,356 $ 41,380 TOTAL EXPENSE $ 414,178 ASSETS Cash Undeposited Funds Fixed Assets $ $ $ 119,408 1,459 36,599 TOTAL ASSETS $ 157,466 LIABILITIES Accounts Payable Payroll Liabilities $ $ 363 2,782 TOTAL LIABILITIES $ 3,145 Unrestricted net assets Designated net assets Permanently restricted net assets Net Income $ $ $ $ 64,494 33,426 13,391 43,010 TOTAL EQUITY $ 154,321 TOTAL LIABILITIES & EQUITY $ 157,466 EQUITY PROGRAM Investment 23% Cost/client: $27.59 47% Cost/client: $677.22 8 30% Cost/client: $565.68 Advocacy (Medical/Consulting) Stepping Stones (Educational Incentive Program) HEART & EMERGE (Healthy Relationships & Abstinence Education) KEY CONTRIBUTORS MN Department Health: Positive Alternatives Grant: $79,707 A&B Winstrom Family Foundation: $57,000 Steve & Cindy Lanoue-Sauer Keith & Sheila Leavell Lee & Mary Torborg Family Fund Of The Central Minnesota Community Foundation Dick & Mimi Bitzan Family Fund Of The Central Minnesota Community Foundation $250 - $499 Keith & Brenda Eisenschenk Richard & Renee Anderson Edna Goebel Molly Abrahamson Adrian & Katherine Ackerman Annunciation Church, Sauk Rapids Patrick Lynch Norm & Judy Hansen The Chancery: $13,250 Harry & Virginia Marso Theresa & Gene Hollenkamp Kevin & Amy Kluesner Fund Of the Central Minnesota Community Foundation: $10,000 Mike Bitzan LLC Jim & Carol Jacobs River Of Life Church, Cold Spring Cindy & Noel Johnson Barbara & Dennis Gregory Family Fund Of The Central Minnesota Community Foundation Phil & Marva Jorgensen Christi Becker Thomas & Margaret Klecker Mark & Brenda Berg-Arnold Jim & Janet Knoblach Robert & Margaret Boatz Bob & Mary Kovell Monica Bucholz Michael & Nancy Kuefler Church Of St. Michael, St. Cloud Treasure Chest: $51,000 $5,000 - $9,999 Ray & Margaret Schluender Bob & Sandy Sexton Anonymous St. Augustine Church, St. Cloud CentraCare Health Foundation St. Cloud Optimist Club Marc & Teresa Dvoracek St. Mary’s Cathedral Church, St. Cloud St. Cloud Hospital $1,000 - $4,999 Amcon Block Rollie & Barbara Anderson Anonymous Greg & Tama Theis Mark & Carole Thibault Tim & Carrie Tripp Torborg Builders George & Shirley Torrey David & Charlotte Volkmuth Fr Greg Lieser Marso Law Office Mathew Hall Lumber Foundation Fund Douglas & Jacqueline Peterschick Church Of St. Paul & St. Peter, St. Cloud Louis Czarnowski DR Signs, LLP Al & MaryDehler Nadine & Dave Pullis Diane Dvorak Steven & Sue Rice Fresh Coat Of Central Minnesota Vos Family Foundation Sacred Heart Church, Sauk Rapids Todd & Bonnie Warren Alexis Sakry David Hall John & Mary Weitzel Gerry & Lucille Schlichting Charity & Ben Hans Zylla Family Revocable Living Trust Wayne & Juli Schluchter Curt & Mary Beth Hanson Natalie Schubert Chuck & Kitty Haselkamp $500 - $999 James & Bonnie Schulzetenberg Michael & Maureen Heinen Linda Allen Keith Schupp & Laura Supan Frank & Alice Brown Dave & Sandy Baldwin Kris & Michelle Shefveland Catholic Foundation, St. Cloud David Barber Maureen Spanier Catholic United Financial Frank & Jeanne Barnaby St. Cloud Granite Rotary Catholic United Financial Foundation Dale & Dixie Beierman St. Cloud Hospital Chapel Fund Holy Family Church, Belle Prairie Robert & Karen Bellmont St. Cloud Overhead Door Co. She married Joseph Fitzgerald in 1956, and they dedicated their marriage to the Holy Family. During their 58 years together they helped each other in every area of their lives. They lived their faith in service to their family and community. Mary Ann taught elementary school for 16 years and was proud to say she began her career in a one room school house. In 1970 the family moved to St. Joseph, Minnesota and she worked at the College of St. Benedict for 10 years. In 1980, the Holy Spirit (and Alice Brown) directed Mary Ann to begin her 20 year position as the Executive Director of Birthline, formerly Birthright. While at Birthline, Mary Ann was known to be a beautiful, grace-filled woman of God. She touched the hearts and lives of countless young women, men and their babies. And, she made a difference in the lives of all those who served with her. Mary Ann died on August 23, 2014, with her husband Joe and her family at her side. This tribute is dedicated to her memory by her friends at Birthline. She will be missed. 13 CONTRIBUTORS In Kind In Kind CONTRIBUTORS Custom Catering By Short Stop Gabriel Media DJ Bitzan Jewelers Joan Edling Christian Women Of Rockville Paula Lanphier Financial Church Of St Paul & St Peter, St. Cloud Leslie Lee Naomi Rowan Jean Leighton Linda Rust Lillians Sacred Heart Catholic United Financial #285 Church Of St Stephen, St. Stephen Clear Waters Outfitting Co. Our life changing work is the inspiration behind her generosity year after year. “The quilts are a combination of my two passions: quilting and defending life. If I can support any effort to counsel or help educate new parents, I have fulfilled part of the mission of my life” says Paula.
