FROM THE PASTOR
I’ve just started reading a book someone recommended, Five Practices of Fruitful
Congregations, by Robert Schnase. In this and subsequent articles I’d like to share some of the
insights the book offers, and hopefully initiate some productive discussion and brainstorming
sessions.
The five practices mentioned are 1) Radical hospitality; 2) Passionate worship;
3) Intentional faith development; 4) Risk-taking mission and service; and 5) extravagant
generosity.
The author defines Christian hospitality as “the active desire to invite, welcome, receive
and care for those who are strangers so that they find a spiritual home” and come to know Christ.
“Radical” hospitality refers to practices that go far beyond minimal expectations such as greeting
a newcomer, giving them a bulletin, pointing out the bathrooms, etc. In fact, Schnase states that
radical hospitality entails being mindful of the person not present in everything it does. This
outward focus emanates from a love “that motivates church members to openness and
adaptability, a willingness to change behaviors in order to accommodate the needs and receive
the talents of newcomers.” After all, churches exist to share with others what we have come to
know ourselves—the love of Christ, meaning and purpose in life, peace, hope and comfort even
in the very midst of turmoil and tribulation, along with a community of faith that walks with us,
supports us, and shows us the face of Christ in words and actions.
These are things worth getting excited about!! Excitement and enthusiasm are
contagious, and a genuine, selfless love for others clearly broadcasts the church’s desire to
welcome, nurture, and care for the stranger outside its walls. This one-time stranger can
become a fellow pilgrim and companion in our mutual faith journeys, the stranger who is a
blessing to us, even as we aim to be a blessing to others.

Our next Men’s Bible Study will be October 1st at 7:30 p.m. We are
studying the Old Testament book of Jeremiah. His words brought to the
people the will of God hundreds of years before Christ. All men are
invited to join us.

Goodsearch.com……
HELP……
Do you want to help make a little extra money
for the congregation? Do you regularly use a
computer?
If so, there is a search engine called
Goodsearch.com that will give back to the church $.01
for each search you do and if you shop online and use
Goodsearch partners the church can receive from 1% to 5% of your purchase. This
doesn’t sound like much but the congregation could benefit greatly.
Example: 10 people doing 20 searches a day @ $.0l = $ 2.00
Times 30 days
$60.00
Times 12 months
$720.00
Isn’t that easy…….and that doesn’t even count the online shopping that we
computer people do.
AND IT IS ALL IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN
HOME.

INK AND TONER CARTRIDGES
Do you have a pile of ink or toner cartridges at your desk at
home or work?
Bring them to St. Peter and we will recycle them for you.
As customers of Staples Office Supply, we can return them to the Store and receive
$2.00 for each cartridge on future purchases. This will help reduce the amount of
money spent on office supplies and paper and you are cleaning up your office
space.
JUST ANOTHER WAY TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT AND OUR BUDGET!
