Editorial
For the last four years, the UNPIdF (Paris Île-de-France Digital University) has been
helping you discover the digital and online services used at University with this little
Digital User Guide.
Today, thanks to digital technology, universities can offer you simplified access to a vast
range of information on your ENT: messages, career files, online courses, databases and
online journals, and information on the large number of training courses on offer about
digital and online technology. All this is available anywhere and any time.
Since 2008, 800 000 copies of these booklets have been distributed to students and
staff from 19 higher education institutions in Paris and Île-de-France. They also present
and explain the initiatives undertaken by Paris Île-de-France Digital University to help
universities develop their digital and online facilities.
We hope you enjoy discovering these digital resources. Please don’t hesitate to contact
us with any comments that might help us develop and improve digital technology for
universities: gun@unpidf.fr

A MINISTRY OF HIGHER
EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
PROJECT
In response to a call for proposals in 2003, 17
Digital Universities were established in France to
promote the development of digital and online
services in public higher education. The UNPIdF
project was launched in 2006 in collaboration
with the 17 universities of Paris and Île-deFrance, which were joined in January 2010 by
the National Institute of Oriental Languages and
Civilizations (Institut National des Langues et
Civilisations Orientales or INALCO), the National
School of Computer Science for Industry and
Business (Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique pour l'Industrie et l'Entreprise or ENSIIE),
the PRES Paris Est and the Paris, Créteil and
Versailles CROUS.
PARTNERS
The Ministry of Higher Education and Research
and local authorities (the Paris City Council and
the Île-de-France Regional Authority) support
2
UNPIdF's activities as part of their policies of
town planning and of strengthening digital
resources in higher education.
Since 2007, the Paris City Council (Mairie de
Paris) has chosen to back the Paris Île-de France
Digital University by contributing to the creation
and distribution of the Paris Student Multi
Service card. It also helps fund 7 digital services
integrated into the Digital Work Environment
(Espace Numérique de Travail or ENT), developed
by Parisian universities.
AN UNPRECEDENTED SCOPE
With its 23 institutions, UNPIdF caters to 400 000
students and over 50 000 higher education staff
in Paris and Île-de-France.

DIGITAL UNIVERSITY
UNPIDF TRAINING
MOBILITY
UNPIdF training
Paris Île-de-France Digital University helps staff get to grips with digital
tools and services.
Paris Île-de-France Digital University offers the
staff of its member universities an array of
training courses on the use of digital technology, to complement the training provided by
the universities themselves.
These sessions, which are entirely free of
charge, welcome faculty and staff members
from all categories while ensuring they receive
quality training suited to their needs.
Three training centres have been specially
equipped to provide the best conditions
possible. This scheme, a first on the French
university scene, has had over 1500 enrolments
since becoming operational in 2008.
The training courses are separated into two
complementary categories: tools and educational uses. Open to all university staff, they
combine a technological approach with the
development of ways of using the technology.
To do this, they draw on the expert contributions
of both specialists in the technology covered
and faculty members (lecturers and ICT in
education). In other words, they deal not only
with how to operate the tools strictly speaking,
but also with their use in an educational
context.
The program on offer includes over 50 courses
every year. Sessions may also be organized on
request.

EDUSPOT PORTAL
Thanks to the EduSpot captive portal, you can
enjoy wireless Internet access at any university
in the Paris Île-de-France region using the username and password from your home university
account.
The EduSpot WiFi network redirects you to the
EduSpot portal, which then gives you two
options: authentication of the site at which you
are currently located, or a list from which you
can choose your university or school.
EduSpot posters and stickers are displayed
wherever the service is available.
UNIVMOBILE & GEOCAMPUS
6
Geocampus is the UnivMobile portal's geolocation service. It references all points of interest of
the universities in the Paris Île-de-France region.
For example, it pinpoints lecture halls, libraries,
student administration offices, etc.
to create your own events on the geocampus.fr
website and share them using a mini-url.
Geocampus can also be used to geolocate meetings or events. From late 2011, it will be possible

I am pleased to present the new "Digital User Guide" for UPMC
faculty and staff.
This year, it is organized into two sections. The first is a practical
guide designed to help you use the Information Technologies
available at UPMC. The second recaps the key functions of UPMC's
ENT – MonUPMC – and the main sections of the Intranet.
This year once again, I wish you a rewarding perusal of the digital
and online services provided by the university.

ORGANIZE A VIDEOCONFERENCE
Currently, UPMC has several videoconferencing rooms in the Atrium: a small room for a meeting
of up to 6 people and a larger one that can accommodate 70 people. A third, middle-sized room has
been available since October 2010. In the big room, it is also possible to broadcast a lecture live
while it is recorded. For a remote meeting, several other locations can be linked to each room.
Find all details and the reservation form online at: www.cpm.upmc.fr, under Nos activités
(Our activities).
It is wise to book a room well in advance, as they are in heavy demand at certain periods. Except in
special circumstances (e.g. late evening use), use of the rooms is free for university departments
and faculties. However, a few prior checks are required, so you need to pre-book and put your
conference attendees in touch with our technician in order to conduct a test. If this trial run is
positive, the booking can be confirmed.
◗
12
Since spring 2011, UPMC has been
breaking new ground: it is one of the first
universities in the world to offer remote
tutorials by videoconferencing: Seevogh
Campus. As long as you have a broadband
connection, you can organize small
classes with your students from your
office or home, or while traveling. Find out
more under the "Seevogh Campus" tab in
MonUPMC.
Using IT in Education in the medical sector
IT in Education plays a particularly important role in medicine, thanks to the near total availability
of lectures and classes online, from first year health studies (PAES, ex-PCEM1) to DCEM2 (4th year
medicine), including videos, podcasts, and slides with commentary. DistEns, a system developed
by TICE-Med and deployed in all the lecture theaters, makes this online broadcasting simple for
lecturers and professors.
Specific websites have been set up for students and faculty members to use:
◗ www.fmpmc.upmc.fr for all administrative information,
◗ www.ticemed.upmc.fr/efmpmc for information about courses and classes, meeting and
UPMC SORBONNE UNIVERSITIES
committee schedules. This site also includes everything related to hospital internships and
residencies, managed by e-stages: using this application, professors can define the
objectives of the internship and students can explain what they have accomplished with
regard to those objectives, and give their feedback.
A studio located at the Pitié-Salpêtrière campus is available for faculty members to make their own
videos illustrating procedures that students may not encounter during their internships.
Crédit photographique : Pierre Kitmacher © UPMC
TICE-Med can also set up specialized dynamic websites for the teaching departments who so wish.

A learning platform is an environment that includes a wide range of functionalities, creating
a shared work and discussion environment for students and faculty.
"Sakai" is open to any faculty member who wants to use it as part of his or her teaching program.
Professors and lecturers manage their own registration list of faculty and students alike.
With a slightly different configuration, any staff group can use "Sakai" to create a collaborative
space for sharing documents, schedules, discussions, etc.

>
To use "Sakai", you must send a request to open a course and space to the Sakai office through
the hotline (hotline.upmc.fr). Don't forget to provide your course (UE) number and your directory
username (but not the password!). You will be notified that your course has been opened within
48 hours, and the next time you sign on to MonUPMC, the course will appear in the Sakai section.
Now, you just need to register the colleagues and students concerned, specifying their role; then
they too will see the course appear under "Sakai".
You may have as many spaces as you have open courses. Their title is the same as the course (UE)
code.
Training sessions can be organized on request. Don't hesitate to contact the Center for Multimedia
Production (CPM) with any queries: hotline.upmc.fr, “Sakai” section.

UPMC SORBONNE UNIVERSITIES
Savoir en ligne is the university's database for online lectures.
Three good reasons to show an interest in Savoir en ligne:
◗ it includes over 800 lectures, all given at UPMC;
◗ you can add to Savoir en ligne by entering your lectures, even if you prefer putting them
under restricted access;
◗ by entering all your material, you will help your own students access your lectures quickly.
THE UPMC INTRANET
The UPMC Intranet is open to all university staff and faculty, as long as they are listed in the
directory.
It includes information on the institutional functioning of the university (UPMC advisory boards,
commissions, and committees), e-research (calls for proposals, research policy, the heads of
research units' newsletter, etc.), e-courses, e-administration (organization charts, legal affairs,
human resources, finances, etc.), everyday life on campus (restaurants and cafés, sport, cultural
activities, social services, etc.), communications (logos and charts, downloadable document
models, etc.), and the university environment (LRU, CURIF, the ministry, etc.)
Finally, it also contains all back issues of the staff electronic newsletter.

Rue des facs,
the online academic question-answer
service
Rue des facs is designed first and foremost for
students and faculty. The service is provided by
librarians from 23 Île-de-France libraries and
covers all fields of study: philosophy, literature,
languages and linguistics, humanities and social
sciences, history and geography, economics and
management, law, political science, arts, medicine and dentistry, pharmacy and cosmetology,
exact sciences.
Questions are sent through the ruedesfacs.fr
website and receive an email reply within three
working days. However, a longer research period may be necessary for unusually complex
questions.
Replies always specify the research method
used and, if necessary, reference tools which
might be useful for further consultation (encyclopedias, library catalogues, books, electronic
resources, etc.). Rue des facs can also provide
bibliographical references (up to ten references),
but does not handle entire bibliographies.
This service was established as part of the
online services of the Paris Île-de-France Digital
