Grange; the Gorham Lions Club; the Gorham Business
Exchange and was their Business Person of the Year.
She is a past president of Maine Recreation and Park
Association and was named the Maine Recreation
and Park Association Distinguished Professional of
the Year in 2003.

of Promotions, Events and Community Outreach for
Michael’s craft store in Rockwall, TX. She also has
many years of expereince in the arts as craft show
promoter, freelance writer, and web designer.

this winter. Behn has a Bachelors Degree in History
from the University of Southern Maine. Since
2008, he has worked at Spring Harbor Hospital as
a Psych Tech on the Children’s unit, and worked
in education for three years as an Ed Tech and
then as a Long Term Substitute, before deciding to
pursue a different career opportunity here at Gorham
Recreation. He also has 10 years experience in
recreation, working for Standish Recreation as both
a counselor and eventually as a Director of their
summer camps. Behn currently is coaching Varsity
football as a Defensive Line/Offensive Line coach at
Bonny Eagle High School, and has been there since
2008.

What is Public Access Television?
The short answer is it is citizen media! The Town of Gorham has negotiated a cable franchise agreement
with a Cable Television Provider. In Gorham’s case that is Time Warner Cable. Federal law allows the town to
require the cable provider to offer “public, educational, or government” (PEG) access channels.
Gorham has 2 PEG channels. Channel 2, GOCAT serves the community interest while Channel 3, GGETV
serves the town and school department. Gorham Community
Access Television (GOCAT) is a free communication resource
available for the citizens of Gorham. GOCATand Gorham
Government, Education Television (GGETV) are only
broadcast to residents in Gorham
who have cable access, providing information about what is
happening in our neighborhoods, ourschools, and our town
office. Camara operators and video editors needed!
GoCat provide a 24-hour electronic bulletin board system to
let the community know what ishappening in Gorham and
surrounding areas. We record and broadcast many school and
community, arts and entertainment events such as concerts
and plays. We provide sports coverageat Gorham High School
and U.S.M. We record special events, such as New Year
Gorham, Parades,and Gorham Marketplace. We produce
studio talk shows on a variety of issues. We also offer open
studio space for you to come in to edit,design, and ask

Importance of Volunteer Coaches
“Being an expert in a particular sport isn’t
necessarily what makes a great coach. A
coach’s willingness to provide a positive
environment for young children to learn
about friendship, teamwork, and sport is the
foundation for their ongoing willingness to
play. Winning does not have to be the focus
for young children. The love of the game
can be fostered through other outlets as
children work to improve their skills.
Practice sessions that are fun and skillbased far outweigh the benefits of
competitive game play for young children.
Taking the time to foster friendships and
build individual skills cooperatively will lead
to success in the game later on.
Whether you have experience in a particular
sport or not, I encourage you to get involved
in coaching youth sports. The bonding
experience between you and your child
can last a lifetime, and the impact that you
can have on providing positive and healthy
opportunities for children through sport is
immeasurable. “

Kiddie Gym
We will set up several activity sites including mats for
tumbling, and a wide variety of balls and other toys!
All toddlers must be accompanied by a “participating” adult.
This program is not structured, but rather an opportunity for
a change of scenery and some “new toys” and new friends
to play with!

Sports Shorties
Sports Shorites is a series of sports lead by Coach Mke for 3-5 year
olds not currently enrolled in Kindergarten. Classes are 45 minutes to an
hour long and a parent must be present at all times. Watch our website
for registration details.
Half-Pint Hoops Basketball
Classes will begin mid-February and take place at the Shaw Gym. This
introductory basketball program teaches children the basic motor skills
necessary to play basketball while they work one-on-one and spend
quality time with their parents. The program focuses on teaching children
and their parents skills in dribbling/ ball handling, passing/catching, and
shooting.
Mini-Mitts Tee Ball
This introductory baseball program teaches children the basics of America’s favorite pastime. Registration
opens in May or June and classes will begin the end of June. Classes take place at the
Village School.

Before and After the Bell
Before & After the Bell is for students in grades K-5.
Before the Bell participants can be dropped
off at Old Robie School between 7:00 and
8:30 am and will be transported by bus to
school.
After the Bell students will be picked up at
their school and transported by bus to Old
Robie School. During program hours
participants will have the opportunity to eat
snack, do homework, and enjoy activities
such as active games, free time, board
games, arts & crafts, and outdoor time.
Participants must be picked up 5:30 pm.
Parents/guardians must sign child(ren)
in/out daily. These programs are open every day
school is in session. In the event of unscheduled
early release or school closing due to a weather
event, Before and After the Bell will not be open.
Early Release, Inservice Days & Vacation Camps
The Gorham Recreation Department offers
Early Release, Inservice Day activities and
Vacation Camps for students in grades K-5,
throughout the school year. These programs
include field trips (admission is included in the
cost of camp), special activities, and projects.
Inservice Day activities and Vacation Camps
will be held at Old Robie School and will run
from 7:00am to 5:30pm.
On Early Release Days students will be picked
up at their school and transported by bus to
Old Robie School Participants must be picked
up by 5:30 pm.

Creative Movement Classes
Gorham Recreation is excited to offer creative
movement classes for ages 2-5 year olds!
Mommy & Me is a movement class for children and
their caregivers. We will dance with props, move like
animals, be exposed to follow the leader and taking
turns, all while having the security of the caregiver
close by.
Music Movement & Play is a 30 minute class for
children ages 2&3. In this class we will dance with
props, use our imaginations to travel to exciting
destinations, learn to follow
the leader, stand in a line
and take turns. It’s a great
class to get the wiggles out
and have fun.
Creative Movement is a
45 minute dance class for
the 3-5 year olds. We will
warm up our bodies at circle time, move across the
floor, use props and start to use basic Ballet terms.
This class helps foster respect for yourself and others
all while having fun!
Instructor Rhonda Cook has taught dance in
Southern Maine for over 25 years. She is currently
teaching at Drouin Dance Center in Westbrook.
Rhonda is certified to teach dance through Dance
Masters of America and loves working with children
of all ages!

Swimming Lessons
The Michael Phelps Skill Center in Saco will be host
again this year for Gorham Recreation Swimming
Lessons on Saturday afternoons between 1-3pm.
Get Wet: 6 months - 3 years old
Get Wet is a parent and child class for children three
years of age and younger (exceptions are made for
older children). While focusing on water comfort,
games, and relaxing in a warm water environment,
parents are encouraged to challenge each child’s skills
and level of comfort in the water. Continually under the
guidance of a competent instructor, the emphasis in Get
Wet is on fun in the water!
Pre-Beginner Divisions
Pre-Beginner is our first class without parental involvement. Children must have reached the age of three to
enroll in this level. The emphasis in Pre-Beginner is on basic water skills such as assisted and unassisted
floating, blowing bubbles and retrieving items from the bottom of a shallow (3 foot) area. Listening to
instructions and working within a group are stressed along with important water safety lessons. Pre-Beginner
includes games and activities that build confidence while increasing the child’s comfort and feel for the water.
Finally, children will become comfortable swimming under the water. Pre - Beginner has two age divisions;
the skills covered in the two divisions are identical.
Pre Beg. 1 is for ages 3-4 and
Pre Beg 2 is for 5 -7 year olds
Beginner Divisions
In Beginner, children are comfortable in the water, able to completely submerge, and can float on their front
and back. The emphasis in Beginner is on development of confidence and feel for the water. Children remain
in the Beginner level until they are swimming freestyle and demonstrating rotary breathing. It is anticipated
that children will remain in this level for multiple sessions, as the skills to be mastered are quite broad and
varied. Beginner has two age divisions
Beginner 1 is for ages 3-6,
Beginner 2 is for ages 7+
Advanced Beginner Divisions
In Advanced Beginner, freestyle (crawl stroke) skills are honed and other competitive strokes are introduced
and taught. The emphasis in Advanced Beginner is on confidence with freestyle and building comfort with
other strokes. Children should be able to demonstrate rotary breathing, have mastered the air exchange
process. Advanced Beginner has two age divisions; the skills covered in the two divisions are identical.
Advanced Beg. 1 is for ages 4-6

Mad Science After School Programs are packed with fascinating demonstrations and inquiry based learning
that provides solid educational value. The curriculum meets state and national science standards and is
continuously being tested and measured. Programs are taught by trained, qualified, dynamic instructors who
follow professional lesson plans, use unique equipment, and original materials. But most importantly, the
programs are kid approved! In Mad Science, we give children a chance to see just how cool science can be!
Mad Science Classes are for Grades K-5 and are held from 3:15pm - 4:15pm.

MARVELS OF SCIENCE
HAVE YOU ever wondered what clouds are made of, what goes on underneath the surface of the earth or
how toys work? Join Mad Science after school as we embark upon an exploratory journey into the countless
wonders of science! Neither rain, nor snow will prevent us from enjoying this hands-on exploration of
meteorology or from taking a voyage to the center of the Earth! We’ll investigate the Science of Toys, learn
about sound waves, and suit up for a flight into space. Albert Einstein said that “The process of scientific
discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder.” There will be no limit to the wonder and imagination in
Marvels of Science!

world where they will explore the many exciting aspects of Engineering. We will build model bridges, explore
circuits, learn how airplanes defy gravity, investigate security systems, and much more! Get hands on in this

and very easy to learn. The best way to learn is to
get out there and try it!
Gorham Rec has snow shoes for available the
whole family to use!

Gr 7-8 and and Gr 9-12 Rec Basketball
Boys and girls in these leagues will be playing
surrounding towns including Bonny Eagle,
Saco,Windham and Portland. Teams will get 1
practice and 1 game a week. Games and
practices will be determined at a later date by
the league and coaches. An assessment will be

Wreaths Across America 2014
Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington,
Maine, was a 12 year old paper boy for the Bangor Daily News when
he won a trip to Washington D.C. His first trip to our nation’s capital was
one he would never forget, and Arlington National Cemetery made an
especially indelible impression on him. This experience followed him
throughout his life and successful career in business, reminding him
that his good fortune was due, in large part, to the values of this nation
and the Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Country. In
1992, Worcester Wreath found themselves with a surplus of wreaths
nearing the end of the holiday season. Remembering his boyhood
experience at Arlington, Worcester realized he had an opportunity to
honor our country’s Veterans. With the help of Maine Senator Olympia
Snowe, arrangements were made for the wreaths to be placed at Arlington in one of the older sections of the
cemetery, a section which had been receiving fewer visitors with each passing year.
The wreath laying is still held annually, on the second or third Saturday of December. Their annual
pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery has become known as the world’s largest
veteran’s parade, stopping at schools, monuments, veteran’s homes and communities all along the way to
remind people how important it is to remember, honor and teach.

Puppy Class
A basic manners and socialization class for puppies
between 2 and 6 months of age using positive
reinforcement methods. Puppies should be at least
8 weeks old when class starts and have their first
set of vaccinations. First class is humans only.
Beginner Manners Class
Become a kind leader and strengthen the bond with
your dog using positive reinforcement. Learn when
to use training and when management is called for.
In this class your dog will start to practice paying
attention to you in the presence of distractions.
Intermediate Class
For students who have already taken a beginner
class. In this class you will learn some new methods
and practice those you’ve previously learned. Work
with other dog/handler teams during some exercises
to increase your dog’s responsiveness to distractions.
Canine Good Citizen Class
Is your dog a Canine Good Citizen? This class is
entirely aimed toward helping the student master the
10 steps of the Canine Good Citizen Test. Helpful
for students interested in becoming a Therapy Dog
Team. Test will be scheduled shortly after class
is completed. Prerequisite: Intermediate class or
instructor permission.
Compost Class
Join instructor Gail Platts for a presentation on how to
turn garden waste and kitchen scraps into “black
gold.” Come learn about the three R’s of home
composting.

Babysitter Training
This class is ideal for current and future babysitters-teaching participants the best ways to be safe and to
keep children in their care safe. In a fun, interactive environment, participants will learn the responsibilities
and qualities of being a good leader and a good babysitter. Babysitter Training is also excellent training for
young people who find themselves home alone or with younger siblings at the end of the school day.
The class, taught by Certified Red Cross Instructor Gail Platts, focuses on injury prevention, first aid, basic
childcare, decision making, problem solving and leadership skills.

U10 & U12 Cal Ripken Baseball
Registrations are based on a first PAID, first
served basis. Registration must be completed
with payment to Gorham Recreation Department
prior to the program registration deadline. Nonresidents
will be accepted on a space-available
basis.
All players interested in playing baseball
from Grade 3 to Age 12 will be placed on
either U10 or U12 baseball team. Player age is what
age the player is as of May 1st, 2015. All players in
this age group will be placed on a team!! The
skills assessment is used as a guide to evenly
divide teams. Returning players must register

but those registered with our online registration
system will receive confirmation emails.
Many programs have limited enrollments, and
may fill up. If so, you will be notified and placed
on a waiting list.

available, you will be contacted to inquire whether you
or your child is still interested in participating.
Scholarships are available on a limited basis;
however, not all programs qualify for assistance.
It is the philosophy of Gorham Recreation that
every child in Gorham have the opportunity to
enjoy and participate in our programs offered. To
apply for a scholarship, contact the Town Clerk,
at 222-1670 for an appointment. All requests will
be held in confidence. Only Gorham residents
are eligible for the scholarship.
Program Cancellations will be announced on our

line 222-1630. Public school cancellation does not
necessarily mean Gorham Recreation program will be
cancelled. If you have questions concerning
cancellations due to inclement weather, please
