SAINT ANNE'S PARISH COMMUNITY, GORHAM ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER THANK YOU for your Christmas cards, notes, gifts and treats. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity to me. And I offer a thank you to those families and individuals who decorated the church for Advent, Christmas and New Year. A thank you also to the lectors and servers, the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and the Deacons, the greeters / ushers, those who prepared the altar and offerings, and those who were attentive to people with special needs. This place was buzzing with the talents and time of so many. A SEASON PASSING. I went back to look at the calendar for the last five weeks, and to appreciate just how many different pieces there were between November 30 and January 4. It was only two days after Thanksgiving when we celebrated the first Sunday of Advent. On December 8, we observed the feast day in honor of Mary under the title of the “Immaculate Conception.” There were three more Sundays in Advent, and then the multiple Masses of Christmas Eve and Christmas day, followed by the Sunday in honor of the Holy Family, Thursday Jan 1st in honor of Mary under the title of “Mother of God”, and January 3-4 to celebrate the Epiphany, accompanied by snow, freezing rain, and icy roads and driveways. There is only one more Sunday to the Church’s “Christmas Season,” which concludes on January 10-11 with the Baptism of the Lord. Then, the many “things” of Christmas will be put away until next year. THE REALITIES OF THE FLU AND COLD SEASON: This past weekend, several parishioners called to say that they were ill; last week, I was called to anoint several people in nursing and rehab centers and the sign on the doors cautioned that there was an outbreak of the flu in the building. (In one building I was required to wear a mask, and in all buildings, to wash my hands before and after being with a resident. So, I caution people in our parishes who are experiencing symptoms of the flu or cold to stay home, to cover their coughs, and not to expect the priest or ministers to give them Holy Communion on the tongue or to drink from the Communion cup. It is sufficient to exchange a nod of the head at the sign of peace (avoid shaking hands). I will repeat these instructions before Mass begins each day .Fr Joe Koury God’s Love for Us When the wise men finally reached Jesus they honored Him with the kind of respect only God deserves, bowing before him in praise and worship. When they left they did not go back the same way they came. When you encounter Jesus, you are changed forever and can never go back to the same ways. Likewise, the wonderful persons He sends to share the journey with us changes us forever and bring us ever closer to the God we worship, honor and adore. How blessed we are to have vivid personifications of God’s love for us! CHRISTMAS FAIR 2015 Yes, it is time to begin thinking about NEXT year's fair. Please mark your calendars. Develop a healthy sense of leisure. We live in a secular world that operates 24/7. Many of us deal with stressful job demands and other commitments. Parents juggle work demands and busy schedules for children involved with activities. Pope Francis notes the real fear that pleasures of art, literature, playing with children, and spending time with family are being lost in the busyness of life. Leisure activities give our bodies and minds a chance to refresh and renew themselves and gives us a chance to reconnect with one another. It is important to set aside time to turn off the TV, communicate with one another, read together, engage in playful activities, and eat dinner together as a family, as well as explore the arts, culture, and nature. January 11, 2015 The Baptism of the Lord "I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals." That was a lowly job. Removing someone's sandals back in the days when everyone walked everywhere on dusty, sandy desert ground was a dirty task. So when John the Baptist said he wasn't even worthy for that humble duty, he was emphasizing an important point. John understood Jesus' real identity. He knew that this was not just another good man, not just a wise teacher or a gifted leader. John realized that Jesus was truly God-made-man. And because of this, the prophet also comprehended how perfect Jesus was. In relation to this perfection, John honestly acknowledged his own sinfulness with this analogy about the sandals. But look what happened: even though John proclaimed that "one mightier than I is coming after me," Jesus showed up at the Jordan River and asked John to baptize him! Jesus humbled himself by going through this ritual of cleansing and purification, even though he didn't need to. John may have thought himself unworthy, but that didn't stop Jesus from coming to him. Jesus wants to come to us too. Not because we have "earned" his love or because we are "worthy" of some great honor, but simply because he loves us. God sent his Son to us to be one of us, to walk among us, to care for us and guide us. When we were baptized, he counted us among his beloved children in a special way, but that joyful bond is not a thing of the past. By our baptism we are always his children, even when we may be disobedient or belligerent ones. His love is not calculated or quantified; it is a free gift. May we appreciate this gift enough to show our gratitude by a life well lived.
