vol. 66 issue 2 Potentate’s Message MTopics IDIAN February, 2011 Shriner of the Year, Myron Frick Wichita, Kansas Awards Banquet: Andy Bayles, membership Chairman receives his Honor Jewel. DAVID PATE Nobles, I am profoundly honored to have been elected to serve the Nobility as your Potentate for 2011. Be assured that I will do my very best to serve our fraternity and wholeheartedly support our Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. A very grateful “Thank You” is extended to Past Potentate Richard Schopf and Lady Rosie for their unselfish devotion to Midian in 2010. Thanks to the Chief Aide, Executive Aides, and all the Nobles and Ladies who helped with the installation on January 28th. Thanks too to Bob Giesen our Installation Director who has always performed an outstanding job with the script to make the installation run smooth as it was in January this year. Special thanks to Roger Snellen, PP for being the Master of Ceremonies and for Imperial Sir Jeffrey L. Sowder for his expertise as my Installing Officer. There are so many others that deserve big thanks for their help with the installation. THANK YOU one and ALL for your help! Lady Pat and I really appreciate it and when we see you we will give each of you our thanks personally. February starts off with a bang! Frick joined Bestor Brown Lodge and the Scottish Rite in 1972. He also joined Midian Shrine in 1972. In 1997 he received his KCCH. In 2007, he was coroneted a 33rd Degree Mason. He is a member in good standing of the Chefs Unit, Hospital Van Unit, Legion of Honor, Nascarts, Butler County Shrine Club, and Sumner County Shrine Club. He is a life member of Midian. This Noble helps drive our Shrine patients to St. Louis on a regular basis. A lot of times you can find him lending a helping hand preparing and serving food at various Unit and Club functions. He has worked for many years on our membership Committee. Most of his work on membership is working with a number of our Nobles on the calling committee, helping to restore past members and encouraging members to pay their dues. He is a member of the Top 25 Club with 37 Top lines and has earned his Honor Jewel and 8 diamonds. He also has his Circus Jewel. We recognize Myron for his hard work and dedication to Masonry and the Shrine. He is a good man with a good heart. Congratulations to Noble Myron Frick 2010 Shriner of the Year. They, as all concerned persons of the Shrine, volunteer for the sake of the children. Thank you for your support. Howard Malone, Van Unit Commander 2011 Have you ever found yourself on an elevator, or in any other public place, when a stranger spots your lapel pin or some other identifying object that would cause him to comment: “I see that you are a Shriner.” At this point you have only a few floors and seldom more than two minutes to respond to the stranger’s statement. What do you do or say? Where do you turn? May I suggest that you turn to Faith. Rely on Faith. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the presence of things not seen.” Capture the moment when this door opens. It reminds me of the time in Scripture when Phillip was sent by an Angel to the desert and there met with an Ethiopian eunuch who had been to worship and was returning on his chariot reading from the book of Isaiah. Phillip asked him if he understood what he was reading. The answer was, “How can I, except some man guide me.” This is the response that your stranger is seeking and you are left there to come with the answer. Through it we understand the world as framed by God. That God whom we reverence and adore. And from Faith we encounter Hope. That feeling that what we desire will happen. It is here that we are arriving at something more personal. So now, we encounter Love. The heaven sent affection that holds us together with all mankind. Yes, Faith Hope and Love, but the greatest of these is Love. May each of you find Good Health, Happiness, Peace, Prosperity, Joy, Wisdom and Love. Especially Love in this Valentine season. Potentate would be a great time to take your Lady out on a great date at Midian. February 12th is Midian’s Valentine’s Dinner and Dance. Dinner, grilled KC Steaks with all the trimmings will be prepared by our own Oriental Band and served in the Scimitar Room from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Beginning at 8:00 pm the Valentine’s Dance will be in the Mecca Rooms. Nobles if you cannot make the dinner, you can still come to the Valentine’s Day Dance with dancing to the songs and music by DJ Nathan Jones. Nathan will soon be in the competition of America has Talent. We will keep you posted on the date and time. We wish Nathan great success! However, Midian too will have a “Midian’s Got Talent” show in July with a follow-up show in August to determine Midian’s Talent winners. You don’t want to miss these two shows! There will be more information about both of the shows but in the mean time, if you have talent and you do, plan on entering the contest. Individually, duos, teams, instruments, singing, dancing, impersonation, what ever your talent is. Go for it!! Nobles, remember our need for membership. Notably importantly is retention of our members as well as recruitment of new members for Midain. Imperial Sir Jeffrey Sowder presented an outstanding membership segment at the Unit and Club Seminar on January 29th. He has demonstrated through the beashriner- John W. Stewart, Chaplain From page 1 now.com web page how we can retrieve and use the necessary tools needed for retention, recruitment and other important membership information. Noble Andy Bayles, Membership Chairman will present several Masonic Information Nights to help us with recruitment. Watch for the dates this year. Thanks to Chief Rabban Terry Schrant, John Auch, PP and Dave Byerley, PP for their role in the Unit & Club seminar as well. Lady Pat and I would like to invite you to attend the Potentate’s Ball and Banquet at the Marriott Hotel, Saturday, March 19th featuring “The Lesser Few” band. The cost is only $90 per couple and don’t forget the Breakfast also at the Marriott. The Directors Staff sounds out, “you DON’T want to miss the normal (or abnormal) fun with the Potentate at Breakfast”! They can be trusted … can’t they? Congratulations to our newly elected Oriental Guide Noble Ed Day and Lady Marilyn as well as our newly Trustee Bob Giesen and Lady Feryl. Congratulations to both of you! In closing, Nobles watch for the Shrine information e-mails, your Unit or Club Liaison Officer’s Shrine information as well as the Topics for activity at Midian Shrine. Together, We Can Achieve! David Pate, Potentate 2011 Page 4 Midian Shrine Topics Harvey County Club & Hobo Unit Greenwood County We started off the year with a very cold meeting night in January which kept several at home. Our Liaison Noble Jodie Mosier and Lady Tammy thanked everyone for letting them be a part of our Club in 2010. Actually the pleasure was ours! We had a great year and enjoyed their fellowship and look forward to having them back to visit any time. Noble Jodie did say they would be back to help us with the Haunted House again this year and we will be looking forward to that. Congratulations to our new Illustrious Sir Noble Dave Pate and Lady Pat on being elected as our new Potentate. Since the Illustrious Sir is one of our own, we are especially proud of his achievement! There must be something in the air in Greenwood County, because we seem to get our share of Potentates from out here in the sticks. Even though Noble Dave was not brought up here, we claim him as one of our own and always will. We are looking forward to an exciting year under his direction. Our 2011 Officers are being formally installed at our Annual Installation on January 29th at the Eureka Country Club. Depending on when you read this, it will have just happened or getting ready to happen. Our 2011 Club Officers are Nobles: Leroy Moreland President; Keith Dalton 1st V.P.; James Watson 2nd V.P. and our Board of Direc- Dodge City Shrine Club CARL “C.F.” COX Reporter tors are Nobles Bruce Smith 1 year; Robert Kurtz 2 year; and Robert “Fergie” Ferguson 3 year. Our 3-Wheeler Officers are Noble Francis Chaplin Captain, and Noble Leroy Moreland Lieutenant. Noble Eldon Teter (with the help of Lynnie) will remain as Secretary/Treasurer for both groups and you are stuck with yours truly as Reporter for another year. I know it’s hard to believe but the Circus is right around the corner. The dates are April 15-17 at the Intrust Arena, with Circus work night on the 14th. As always, we will be hosting the kids to the Friday matinee performance on April 15th. Mark your calendars now for that weekend and plan to join us at the Circus. It is not too early to start booking circus ads. If you know of someone that would want to put advertising in the program, contact Noble Bruce Detwiler. Look for more information to come as we get closer. We have had a couple of Nobles under the weather lately. Noble Jake Schoenhals is recovering from surgery, but is on the mend. Noble Leonard Booth is still at home and slowly getting better, but I’m sure our thoughts and prayers along with some visits would make him feel much better. We are wishing them both a speedy recovery. Until next time… Nobles don’t forget your special valentine on Feb.14th. “Doc” McCosh Reporter Happy 2011 to all of you. Here we are now in the 1st month of 2011. Winter is out here in Western Kansas and some days you just do not know if it is going to be Cold – Snow – Ice - or – maybe warm. (haha). The Dodge City Shrine Club held their monthly meeting on the 12th of January at the Mariah Hills Steak and Ale. For January, and the cold icy weather we had a really great turnout for the dinner and meeting. Everybody enjoyed this new restaurant which opened in November. We were very fortunate to have at our monthly meeting and dinner the Illustrious Sir Richard Schopf and his wife who have been wonderful to us every time they have come out to visit and talk about events with the Wichita Median during the past year. Our Oriental Guide Lonnie Nichols who has been our liaison for the past 2 years with the Wichita Shrine introduced us to Larry Wilson, 1st Ceremonial Master who will be our new liaison with the Median for the upcoming 2011 year. Lonnie will be missed, but we know he will show up from time to time out here to visit the grandchildren, so we might just get a chance to see him too. The planning for the 66th - 2011 Dodge City Shrine Club Circus is in full swing. Remember that the 2011 Circus is scheduled for February 11th, 12th & 13th at the Dodge City Civic Center. *** As a hobby or as a life time job, being a clown and making people laugh is a very rewarding experience.*** The next DC Shrine Club meeting will hold their meeting of 2011 on the 9th of February, just right before the Circus. The meeting will be held at the St. Bernard Lodge. Social time starts at 6:30 pm. Dinner is at 7:00 pm. This will be a “Pot Luck” so please bring either a salad or dessert. The main dish will be provided by the Shrine Club. Please put this on your calendar and come out for a very special evening which will finalize some of the events for the Circus on the 11th, 12th and 13th. Just a final reminder – The 66th year of the Shrine Circus in Dodge City will be here in February, 11th, 12th, & 13th. This is his second go ‘round with us; guess Midian powers-that-be figured he needed more time to whip us into shape. Of course, that also gives us more time to whip him into shape. Could be an interesting year. All kidding aside, we’re pleased to have him with us again and hope he feels the same. Our sincere thanks to outgoing Liaison Noble Bob Bulman for his interest, advice and support. Club and Unit officers remain unchanged for 2011; we can only hope they get it right this time! Among guests at the January meeting were Lonnie Patterson and lady Jeannie. Brother Lonnie, hopefully soon to be a Noble, is one of Newton Lodge #142’s newest Master Masons, and was top-lined by Noble Larry Clover. Noble Larry was active in Masonry years Sumner County The first event for 2011 will be the annual Lamb Fry. Good news! The new gas fryer has been tested and is ready to go. Jackie, Myron, Chip, and Scotty worked on it the other day when the Kops were working on the paddy wagon. I also want to thank Casey for the new gas line he had made. After the mushroom cloud cleared in the warehouse, it appeared to be working fine. For a second I thought we had built a fire breathing dragon. I hope everyone’s eyebrows are growing back. A BIG thanks goes out to every noble that works hard and donates their time for this club. The dinner will be at the Belle Plaine Legion. Social hour will be at 6pm, dinner at 7pm on February 5th. I was advised by the board to inform everyone we will be changing the date of the monthly meeting for February. We are going to move the meeting to Friday February 4th. We will be preparing the lamb fries on that date so the meeting will take place at that time. The work will start at approximately 5pm and the meeting will be after we are done. If you are free and would like to help, we can always use a fresh pair of hands as they tend to get a little cold after a while. If you can’t make the work night, we hope you will plan to be the dinner and FEBRUARY, 2011 JOHN HECKMAN Reporter ago, then just “drifted away” for various reasons. He said helping Lonnie study the ritualistic work revived his interest, and vowed to become more involved. Promise kept: Last month Noble Clover was installed as Junior Warden of Newton Lodge! Welcome Brother Patterson, and welcome back, Noble Clover! On a related subject, stepping aside after many years of service to Newton Lodge were Chaplain Noble Clifford Knauss and Secretary Noble Ron Calbert, both of whom said they were ready for a little R-and-R. Thanks to both for difficult jobs well and faithfully done. Retired minister Noble “Bill” Hickerson, elected as new Lodge Secretary, had to tonedown his “preacher-voice” at his first Stated Meeting; seems he was keeping some of the Brothers in the back awake. (snik) Come smile with us, the fun-iest Club in Midian. Jeremy Woodson Reporter support your club. This is a stag event and guests are always welcome. I hope to see everyone there. Remember, if you still don’t have your SCSC membership card you can pick one up at the door. This is a bargain at twice the price and will admit you to the December event that is free to members. We have a date change to announce. The SCSC dinner scheduled for April 19th will actually be held on the 9th which is a Saturday night. We had a small misprint and want to let everyone know of the correct date. Not blaming the printers, (Randy) as we know you do an excellent job for us every year. We may have put down the wrong date when we gave it to you. Anyway, hope to see you all on the 19th. More details to follow in the March Topics. I attended several events in the month of January. It was nice to see SCSC well represented at all of these events. Many of our members support not only our club, but other units and clubs as well as all of Midian. Keep up the good work. As always, there are lots of events at Midian. This year will be no exception. Please get out and support your Temple. FEBRUARY, 2011 Butler County Crunch, crunch, crunch went the walk to our last meeting in snow and one degree weather. Munch, munch, munch we did at the Cheatwood Family Restaurant in Augusta. President Chris Nelson took the helm and took us through the meeting in due fashion. Congratulations are in order to Noble A.W. McVay as one of the top three salesmen for circus. A couple of our members also picked up circus awards for their contributions with other groups; Noble Bruce Rose (Band) and Noble “Red” Rehburg (Director’s Staff). And then there is Noble Richard Wentworth, who got a special award for not being able to say “NO.” Whether it is smoking up some meat or helping with some task at Midian, he seems to always make himself available. Thank you Richard. And then there is Noble Myron Frick who was awarded the very prestigious, “Shriner of the Year.” We sure do have some great members. Congratulations to all. On the down side of things, Sherman Parry isn’t getting around very well, so this Barber County Barber County Fire Wagons met 1-10-11 at the Plum Thicket Inn with approximately 12 members and guests. The main topic of discussion was planning for our upcoming calf fry January 31st. We have 150# on Southwest Shrine Club The Southwest Shrine club got off to a great start on January 3, 2011 at the Salty Dog in Liberal. Noble Carl Lynn was installed as the new president of the SWSC..Noble Carl spent endless days and numerous campaign funds to nail down this position. (haha) Several items we need to discuss at our February meeting are the 1920 Seagrave fire truck, Fez mobile and the ambulance. Usage of the vehicles for parades is down and storage has become a problem. Midian Shrine Topics Page 5 ARV KRUMINS Reporter may be a good opportunity to catch up with him and pay him a visit. In the middle is Sally Reeves, who just got out of the hospital after twenty-five days. On the plus side, Harold Brewer is doing pretty well after having some work done on his knee. Let us keep them all in our thoughts and prayers. I am a little late in offering condolences to the families of Noble Lewis Brunhoeber and Noble Allen Joe Edwards. Louie used to ride a little red scooter around the fire truck when BCSC had the Red Scats as part of the unit. After the Red Scats stopped parading, Louis helped found the Motoguzzi Unit. He always seemed to enjoy riding around on one of those scooters. I never met Joe, but we traded notes every year when he paid his membership dues, even from Colorado, and then Fort Dodge, Kansas. We are sorry for your loss. The next meeting will be at 6pm at Double D’s in El Dorado on February 9 th. See you all there. TOM TRAYLOR Reporter hand and scheduled a work day for January 30th at 3:30 p.m. to prepare the calf fries. We will meet at the Plum Thicket Inn so come by to help and bring a prospect. gary mCcarty Reporter We have received word that Jade Cathey, a senior at Liberal High School has been selected to play in the East-West Shrine football game in July. Jade was a receiver and defensive back for the Redskin football team. Noble Carl Lynn and Lady Chris have volunteered to send out notices for our meetings. Our next meeting will be at the Salty Dog in Liberal on February 7th. Start time will be 6:30 p.m. Hope to see everyone there next month. Keystone Kops Don’t you all just love winter? Someday I hope to be a snowbird and winter in “warm” Texas or Arizona. Oh well, for now, I will just hang out here in beautiful but cold Kansas and enjoy this great state we have. Winter here gives us Koppers a chance to catch our breath after the hectic holiday season and get Shrine elections and mid winter meetings done. We have elected a new Kopper Board for 2011 and here they are: Chief Greg Stobart, Captain Bob Dukes, Lieutenant Mark Brown, Sgt. of Arms Jeremy Woodson, Board Member at Large Scotty Clark and Treasurer Steve Mitchell. All subject to the blessing of Illustrious Sir David Pate. Congratulations to you all and may wisdom and fun follow you in your 2011 journey. Greg Stobart, aka “Hurley” or “Hurl dog”, and his Lady Lesly will be making their second journey as Chief and First Lady of the Midian Keystone Kops. “Hurley” is known for his “involvement” in all that is going on around him. Greg will also be Commissioner of CSSAKK this year. He will have his plate full for sure. I say “go gettum ‘Hurley’!” Bob Dukes, aka “Turf”, and his Lady Gaga is making a second run for a Gold Whistle. He might even make it in 2012, but will he opt out for the fancy Fez? Not…! Mark Brown, aka? , and his Lady Mary Past Masters Our last meeting was on the October24th, those present were: Cleland Condit, John Heckman, Tom Johnson, Ross Smith and Larry Stafford. Our Divan Liaison officer Fred Smith was in Oklahoma on Shrine business. Our next meeting will be March30th. I would like to take this space to wish all at MIDIAN SHRINE a very happy and prosperous 2011. Since I was unable to prepare this column last month, there wasn’t one in the January Topics. I apologize for the omission. The officers for 2011 will be the same our officers serve for 2 years. They are: Commander Carl Younts; Vice Commander Mike Bennett; Secretary/Treasurer Larry Stafford; Topics Reporter Tom Johnson; Chaplain Wayne White; Membership Larry Stafford; Circus Mike Bennett. Our Commander Carl was in the hospital, he had developed stomach ulcers, with proper medication and rest he will be back as good as ever. Golden VIPS On the Midian Golden VIPS’ first meeting of the New Year, the day was bitterly cold, with the five inches of snow still on the ground. The sun shone brightly, though, and several of our members were out to support our new officers for the year, and to thank our last year’s leader, Bill Weber, for a “job well done”. We really appreciate all he and Cindy did for our great organization. The new President for 2011 was introduced and the additional officers will resume the positions they held last year: President: “MOON” Reporter are going for the Gold and the way he is going he will surely make it down the road. Jeremy Woodson, aka “Woody”, and his Lady Tina have many paths to follow to get to the end of the rainbow where they will find their treasure of Gold! Scotty Clark, aka “Scooter”, and his Lady Charlene are going for the “triple crown” of the Midian Koppers. Scotty may be our first three time Chief, but will he make it past the vote for that third Gold Whistle? Steve Mitchell, aka “Moon” & a few others, and his Lady Sue have been down this Treasurer road before and look forward to a “prosperous” year for the Koppers! What a year it should be for the Koppers in 2011! I know we have already been on the Kiowa bus trip and have had the KK Installation of Officers, so even though we are recharging our batteries we have still been busy. This month brings the all important mid winter CSSAKK meeting in KC. This is where we intimidate all the other Kop units into submission and we bring home the bacon again in 2011! I Wonder?? Will “Hurl dog” get the pack under control?? I Wonder?? Will “Turf” & Gaga elope?? I Wonder?? Did we make it to Kiowa on the bus?? TOM JOHNSON Reporter At the annual meeting on January 12th. David Pate, a former Divan Liaison became the Potentate for 2011. Let’s all get out and support David. When you get this, I’ll have had my second knee replacement. My first one went very well. So I expect this one to be the same. The next meeting will be March 23rd, we’ll plan for the Circus, please plan to be there. Larry Stafford has obtained some new punches; we’ll have 3 of each so there won’t be many back-ups at the check-in table. The 2011 circus will be at the Intrust Arena as last year. 2011Circus dates are APRIL 14TH, 15TH,16TH, AND 17TH. If you would like, our members will help with degree work, we would appreciate 2 weeks’ notice. Please contact: Commander; Carl Younts at (316) 755-0882, or Vice-commander; Mike Bennett at (316) 661-2235, or Secretary; Larry Stafford at (316) 619-0791. CAROL HOLMES Reporter H. One of our famous veteran members showed standing by before a fantasy competition in 1993. I think I’ve seen that guy when I was introduced to some fellow of Chinese decent! Antique Autos Hi all we have started a new year. Hope it brings all the good things in life for each and every one. I will say thank you to Grant and Ray Richecky for the great work done on behalf of the group in making sure we were all informed of what was happening in the Topics. Great Job!! I will try to carry on and keep everyone updated with news and happenings, if anyone has anything that needs to be included please call Dale Gibson at 316-361-0758 and leave a message if we are not able to answer the phone or send an e-mail to either deerangel@cox.net or nose_art@hotmail.com. We began the year with the installation of our officers Captain Noble Curtis Gilbert, Lieutenant Noble Kent Butz, Secretary Noble Randy Edwards and Treasurer Noble Wayne Orr by our liaison Noble Wayne Wells at our January meeting on Monday January 3rd. Noble Randy Edwards introduced the group to Pastor Joe (sorry I missed the last name), from Derby, whose family recently adopted a young child who was diagnosed with several severe problems. He was able to see a doctor in Dallas, who is a Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner, he referred the family to another doctor who specializes in one part of the serious problems this child has and as a result the child will be seen at the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. Before I get carried away, I was told to give all of you a giant thank you from our now Past Director, Noble Kenneth Loffland and his main support, Lady Billie Loffland. They appreciated your support and your warm friendship. In response, our group wants to thank them for a job very well done. I guess Noble Corky Edminster and his boys closed out 2010 by entertaining at the Marriott on New Years eve. They just keep cooking that good old Dixieland stew for everyone to enjoy. Where oh where is Noble Chet and Lady Ruth Cremeens now? The last I heard , they took another cruise. Of course, there were slots on board. I also heard that Noble Floyd and Lady Elizabeth Piper spent a part of the holidays in beautiful Hawaii. That is a hard, FEBRUARY, 2011 dale gibson Reporter doctor, seldom sees anyone in less than six to nine months and he was seen in less than a day. Joe’s answer was he knew Jesus, great answer. But Joe and his family wanted to say thank you to the Shrine and all other Masons for allowing his son to be accepted into the Scottish Rite Hospital and then on into the Shrine system. This is truly what we are all about Helping Children “The World’s greatest philanthropy”. Noble Curtis our captain would like input on places we can go as a group where we can include our ladies, so give him some ideas. I know he is open to any idea where we can get together and fellowship with one another. Curtis has scheduled an outing for February 19 to the Crow Uptown Theater for the Valentines show “Lovers and Other Strangers” cost is 38.43 per person and includes the show, meal, coffee or tea and desert. Happy birthday to Noble Chris Cushman and Lady Lynda, Noble Bob Hiebert, Noble Harold Russell, and Lady Crystal Light. We hope you had a wonderful birthday. She is now 100 per cent free of her cancer and that chapter is finished. Lady Dottie Payne just keeps on “keepin on”. She was just moved to the Masonic Home and is continuing to work hard at getting back to us as soon as possible. Send her a card – she’d like it – room lll at the Masonic Home. We’re all with you and on your side, Dottie! I’m sorry to say that we lost another brother to the black camel on its journey. We lost O. J. Brock, Jr. We will miss him. Here it is 1/10/11 and snowing. It is supposed to get colder for a few days with maybe more snow by the 16th so I’m out of here! Jan and I are going to head for Arizona and maybe the Rio Grande Valley for a few days. See ya next month. Hospital Van Drivers Greetings, I am stepping into uncharted waters as your new Recorder so bear with me. Looking forward to working with our new Commander Howard Malone and Vice Commander Glen Taul. We grieve the loss of Noble Donald R. Weber, a valued Hospital Van Driver and good friend. Our condolences to his Lady Anita and family The Christmas Party at the Masonic Home was well attended and enjoyed by all. We are happy to hear that our Commander, Howard Malone is doing fine after a short stay in the hospital. Vice Commander Glen Taul finished chemo and is doing fine. GERALD BULLER Reporter Johnnie Ruble also has some health concerns. Our prayers go out to them. The Van Unit made approximately 222 trips in 2010, transporting children to and from St Louis and elsewhere the children needed to go. We have five trips scheduled to St Louis for the month of January. Safe travel with our Shrine Children. Our Van Unit meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm. We would encourage all active and inactive members to attend. We would welcome new people to sign up for the Van Unit. FEBRUARY, 2011 Arab Patrol LARRY WILSON Reporter This may be my shortest newsletter ever. Let’s see… we had a few patrolmen attend the Midian Christmas Party and fun was had by all. Again, our thanks go out to High Priest and Prophet Jodie Mosier and Lady Tammy for hosting the New Year’s Eve Party at their home. Despite the very frigid weather, over 30 people attended to welcome in the new year. In January, we had many patrolmen receive awards for their outstanding work at the circus. It makes me proud to be associated with a great unit. By the grace and thanks to Potentate Richard Schopf, we were able to submit our worksheet late and qualify for the Scimitar Award for the seventh straight year. The following weekend found the patrolmen working on the first fundraiser of the year, the Darryl Startbird Show. We had a good turnout and Captain and the officers would like to thank you for all of your help. Our new patrolmen, Roth Christopherson and Mike Latimer were great on their first time out getting indoctrinated into Patrol life. Thanks, guys! As always, special thanks go to the ladies for without them, it would nearly be impossible to work these events. With permission from the Canteen Corporation, we were able to sell Breakfast Burritos on Saturday and Sunday for the price of donation to the Plane of Mercy. Needless to say, we were sold out within 15 minutes on both days. Rumor has it that it may be the last year for the Darryl Starbird show. There were fewer cars on display than last year and attendance to the show as well probably due to the entry fee. It’s going to be hard for Darryl Starbird to compete with the Black Top Nationals. As a result, the sales were down. The canteen did approach us about helping out with the Big Boy Toy show coming up in March, which is a one day show tentatively scheduled from 10:00 Am to 5:00 or 6:00 PM. Exact date and time will be forthcoming. On a personal note, my involvement with the Divan as the 1st Ceremonial Master will be limiting my ability to devote the time and effort to the Patrol as I have in past years. I will make every attempt to continue to serve you as your 1st Lieutenant and patrolman as time will permit. The next fundraiser is the Home Show. See you there! Hillbilly Band What do the terms organization, planning, and rehearsals have to do with our Unit? In the past, nothing, but that’s all changing; hopefully for the good. Trumpeter Noble Al Brumbaugh assumed the chair of Music Director, a position vacant since the retirement of fiddler Noble Bill Boggs. Noble Bill and the old-pro members of the group had been doing the same tunes for so long that performances were almost automatic, little preparation was needed as the “charts” were in their heads, and there was little need to “direct!” Not so easy with the some of the newer members, however, fine musicians, but unfamiliar with many of the classic tunes, used to a more structured atmosphere, and at times a little uncomfortable “winging it.” Noble Al soon realized help was needed, and volunteered to put his experience to work blending the best of the old and the new. His offer was gratefully accepted and we begin a new chapter in the long history JOHN HECKMAN Reporter of this unique group. Our first rehearsal under the new music “boss” went well, serious when necessary, but not without humor. For example, one new goal is to eventually have as few charts as possible visible when performing, reflecting the free-wheeling tradition of the Unit. Veteran trumpet soloist Noble Wilbur Geeding caught guitarist Noble Jim Malia peeking at chord charts downloaded on an i-Pad and said, “Paper or plastic, that’s still cheating.” At members’ request and for the first time in recent history, the Hillbillies will now have regularly scheduled rehearsals; 6:30 P.M. the first Thursday of each month in the Mecca room. Prospects are welcome. Welcome (again) to our new Midian liaison officer, Noble Fred Smith, appointed to work with us for the second time in recent years. We’re glad to have him back, and thank outgoing liaison Noble Bob Bulman for his advice and support this past year. The version with the marshal music could fit in the History Channel. Noble PP John Auch heard about the health hazards of using e-cigarettes and may have gone back to smoking. At least that’s what it seemed like when Rocky and John walked outside of the Scotch and left the door open and cigarette smoke came back inside. 2011 Captain Rocky McWilliams let us know the unit will travel to CSSA in Overland Park, Kansas and Imperial Session in Denver. It should be a hoot. Adjutant Noble Les Unrein was in attendance, Lieutenant Noble Jerrod Cox was taking mental notes. We will be practicing for the competition once the weather warms up. Midian Shrine Topics NORM CONLEY Reporter Nichols told us what was coming up and Midian in a short presentation. Other members receiving Midian Awards for Circus sales were Nobles Jeremy Cates, Noble Ron Stowell, Bob Ragsdale, Les Unrein, Loren Wormington, Bruce Detwiler, PP Ron Capps, Rocky McWilliams, PP John Auch and Reiferd Acord. The Motor Patrol Won a “Skim A Tar” award for participation. We are proud of this award. It means we have a vibrant active unit. It was good to see Chaplin Buck Fisher recognized for his photography and Chief Raban Dave Pate for his electronic message service. This is saving Midian a mountain of cost every year. A Motor Patrol hats off to Noble Fisher and Pate. We celebrate the lives of Noble Lew Taylor and Noble Mike Elliott. Again keep PP Gary Dunn and Noble Phil Frost in your thoughts and prayers as they fight cancer. Captain Reiferd Acord is recovering from surgery. Noble Horst Hiller is still weighing options. He may be looking for a faith healer. Pictures of the activities are found on the www.motorpatrol.us website. BOB HERRMAN Reporter Wedding Anniversary for this month is Noble Bob Bulman and Lady Jane, February 24. Birthdays are Nobles Fred “Cupid” Thompson. Feb. 14., and Les Unrein, Feb. 7. Congratulations to all. I want to thank Noble Jim Bender, for helping me this year with the Topics. We will alternate months. Page 14 Midian Shrine Topics Arami Court JAN HIEBERT Reporter Lots of things happening this winter at Arami Court. January 29 began with a ceremonial. We were very pleased to initiate 8 Ladies into the mysteries of LOS. Afterward, we enjoyed a tasty Irish Stew Dinner prepared by Lady Phil Wohlford and her Noble Terry Benson. Thanks to our Trailers who helped with the dinner preparations. It was a lovely, albeit busy, day. We continue to be busy with bingo every Tuesday night at Bear’s Bingo at Meridian & McCormick. We recently gave away both of our progressive jackpots of $1,000 each. Very exciting! Come join us. All members of Arami Court are encouraged to attend the February 4 meeting for the election of the 2011-2012 officers. The 29th Annual Installation of Officers will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 2:00pm at Sunflower Lodge, 2929 W. Pawnee. All officers, elected and appointed, should plan to attend the practice on Friday, March 11 at 6:00pm at the lodge. The public is invited to the installation. Work continues on the Mid-States Unit Meet. The decorations committee recently got together to create centerpieces for the banquet. Breakfast and Fun Night decorations remain to be done. It takes a lot of work and time to get everything done before October. Our Ladies enjoy a challenge. Several of our Ladies and their Nobles will be off to St. Louis for the institution of a brand new Court of Ladies the weekend of February 19-20. The weekend includes the institution ceremony, initiation of the 50+ new members, the installation of the new officers and a banquet. Ladies from all over the U.S. will be participating. The institution of this new Court have been in the works for about 2 years. What an exciting event! Until next time, thistle tickles and Tigger kisses!
