It’s easy in the summer time, when the Religious School is not in session and
B’nai Academy (Our Adult Life Long Learning Program) is on hiatus, to put
aside our Jewish practice and even our Jewish identity. While we won’t see
one another as often at B’nai Israel, our practice of the principles of
Judaism go with us where ever we go, and guide us in the decisions we
make. That way, whenever we choose to let God influence our actions, we
bring Jewish ethics and morality into our lives.
Even though the children will not be here on Sundays, I hope that they
remain engaged in Jewish living by reading Jewish books, engaging in
Jewish ritual, visiting places of Jewish interest while travelling, and
discussing Jewish values while performing acts of loving kindness.
I hope this summer is an opportunity to relax, travel, slow down a little, and
learn some new things, while allowing God, through our Jewish teachings,
to guide our every step.
Of course, we are still here over the summer. So if you need anything from
your CBI family, we are only a phone call or email away. Do let Cathy,
Jessica, Julie, Deborah or me know if we can be helpful to you in any way.

President’s Message by Deborah Sternberg
Some of the most meaningful summers of my life were as a Camp Dream Street counselor during
high school. We often talk about making a difference in the world. That can be accomplished
through many means. You can make a difference by teaching in religious school, donating time and
money to a non-profit, or spending a week of your summer at Camp Dream Street. I promise your
perspective on life will change during and after that week.
Camp Dream Street provides an innovative, unique, and impactful experience. Campers ages 8-17
with physical disabilities have the opportunity to experience summer camp like so many of their
peers. They live away from home at Henry S. Jacobs Camp in Utica, MS, sometimes for the first time
in their life, and are included in all activities. They are encouraged and challenged to actively
participate and come away with new independence, new confidence, and new friends.
The volunteer staff experiences a unique opportunity to care for another person and develop a
bond on a level unlike any other. Staff members are paired with a camper for the entire week. They
quickly become friend, role model, and care-taker all wrapped up into one. Each person, camper
and staff alike, leave camp transformed at some level – Tikkun Olam in its purest form.

Operation Shoe Box is an organization that sends care packages to our military servicemen and women
serving overseas, particularly in the Middle East. One thing this organization likes to send in the care packages to those who are hospitalized are funny, goofy head coverings, because their heads get very cold in
camp hospitals and infirmaries. So Operation Shoe Box created knit and crochet patterns for these hats.
On Mitzvah Day here at CBI, we had an amazing response to our request for these hats. Many ladies who
either knit or crochet have created, as of the date of writing this article, 22 hats in every color under the
rainbow (and some the rainbow never sees!). I want to thank the following people for so enthusiastically
participating: Diane Mayer, Laurie Brandt, Elaine Simon, Sarah Attias, Ava Attias-Boker (a newbie at crocheting), Hannah Kaplan, Jon Blumberg, Carol Newman and Edie Bender. Thanks also go to Robbie Rubin,
who has located a business that will be donating more yarn for this project. And this is an ongoing project. While several hats were created on Mitzvah Day, more were created before and afterwards. If you
would like to participate, just e-mail me at jmurvin@aol.com and I will send you the patterns. Hats off
(Rabbi-like pun intended) to all those who have participated and who continue to
participate in this wonderful project.

Magical Mitzvah Day 2015 by Jessica Yellen
Thank you to everyone who contributed or volunteered at our 16th annual
Congregation B’nai Israel Magical Mitzvah Day! We made the “magic”
happen when we came together on Sunday, March 22 to make a difference
in our Baton Rouge community. The Baton Rouge Food Bank Team and a
few others arrived bright and early to get to work. Everyone else met up
by 9:00 a.m. for coffee, a little nosh, a team meeting, and a song and prayer
led by Rabbi Jordan. A perfect start to a meaningful day!
The enthusiastic members of the Food Bank Team, which included the
outstanding efforts of BaRFTY (with little or no sleep the night before),
worked tirelessly to sort 6 large pallets of donated food while looking for
damaged containers, expired food or opened packages. Volunteers of all
ages were a part of the “Magical Mitzvah Mensches” team that compiled
100 decorated canvas toiletry bags for the Battered Women’s Shelter, 100
decorated snack bags for St. Vincent de Paul, 50 care bags for Cancer Services patients, and donated 20 Spring Crafts and Games baskets for Cancer
Services.
“Operation Shoebox” knitted and crocheted the exquisite
skullcaps for the United States overseas military. Our “GaitWay Therapeutic Horsemanship” helped clean up the stables, cut the grass, yard
work and maintenance, helped take apart and move old equipment to
make way for a new and better interactive environment, and donated
hardware to help complete a pen for some of the horses along with paint
and paint brushes. “Boys Hope Girls Hope” spent the morning putting up
a new basketball backboard and net and brought breakfast for the scholars. The “L’dor Vador” group made exquisite Elijah’s Cups and assembled
the Jewish Federation of GBR’s Passover Bags for the seniors. The “B’nai
Buddies” were thankful the sun was shining on Mitzvah Day! They
worked on three of the temples gardens, began reviving the garden near
the playground, planted two apple trees near the Youth room, weeded,
pruned, planted, and mulched the day away, and built a fence. Finally,
our “Neshamah Noshers,” brought enthusiasm to the lunch preparation
and made sure everyone was fed at conclusion of our day.
This Mitzvah Day just ended, but planning next year’s Magical Mitvzah Day
will be here before we know it. Ways you can help for next year: collect
toiletries throughout the year, ask your dentist to donate toothbrushes
and/or toothpaste, knit or crochet a skullcap, think of other ways we can
help our community next year, and plan to lead a team at the next
Mitzvah Day!

Gary Weill was the President of SoFTY (NYFTY Southern) and was very
active in Jewish youth activities in the Southern region. His mother, Ruth,
was also a Youth Group advisor for many years at Congregation B’nai
Israel.
After his tragic death in 1980, his parents, Ruth and Gus Weill, had a
vision to build a room for the Jewish youth of Baton Rouge. Their vision
was a room which would have a personal, comfortable space located
within the walls of Congregation B’nai Israel. This room would be a
location in which our youth could gather, socialize, and learn more about
Judaism.
The Gary Weill Youth Room is the result of this vision. Today it serves,
not only our Youth, but also our Congregation with activities such as
family dinners, youth programming, Shabbat services, and Jewish learning
experiences for adults and youth alike.
The Gary Weill Youth Room Fund helps to maintain and make future
improvements which will serve our youth of today and our youth of
tomorrow.

of a loved ones death unless other arrangements have been made.
Healing
Mi Shebeirach, the prayer for physical and emotional healing, is recited at the Friday
evening Shabbat service. If you are ill and would like a Mi Shebeirach recited on your
behalf, please call the Temple office at 343-0111 before noon on Thursdays, so the congregation may offer its prayers for you. If you know another person who needs the
same, please ask the individual for permission to read his/her name before calling the
office.
Visiting Those Who Are Ill
Congregation B’nai Israel wants to make sure we care for our members and their
families. If you have a family member or know of someone in our congregation who is
in the hospital, has been in an accident, or is ill and recuperating at home, please call the
Temple office at 343-0111 so Rabbi Jordan can contact them and arrange for a visit.

Have you been in the back field, maybe the outdoor sanctuary, and wished you could
access the back of the temple - but you had to walk around the entire building?
Problem solved! This month, the men's club got together and bolstered up the back
fence and added a gate for direct access to the building from that side. Thanks to
everyone who helped with fence renovation, Hamilton Shaw, Jack Kunstler, Jay Jalenak, Warren Sager ...and everyone else who I haven't mentioned (actually, Moses did
come briefly and bless the structure). And a special thanks to Harold Brandt who
masterminded the whole thing, made it happen and put in overtime!
Also, we have started a new tradition of having a beer together on the 3rd Thursday of
every month -- our next meeting is May 21. We have been meeting at the Corporate
Brew and Draft (2561 Citiplace Ct., Baton Rouge) which is next door to The Cove at
Citiplace Court.
So come on by for this informal get-together, hope to see you there!

Last month we had a great time at our lock-in with BaRFTY and JYG!
There was a great turn out and a lot of fun had by ALL!
Recently, 11 BaRFTYites attended our most recent regional event at camp,
spring conclave! Another memorable weekend!
This month, we will have our end of the year celebration and elections for
next year's officers. We can't wait to see everyone!
