Beville Park. The City of Leitchfield has its very own water park, Leitchfield Aquatic Center. 2015 The Leitchfield City Council meets in regular session on the first and third Mondays of each month. 3 On behalf of the City of Leitchfield, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you and your family. Leitchfield is located in Grayson County, Kentucky between Nolin Lake and Rough River Lake. Leitchfield became incorporated in 1866. Between 1812 and 1814, the first brick house in the county was built, which is known today as the Jack Thomas house and is located in Leitchfield. Jack Thomas was appointed the first county clerk of Grayson County when the county was formed. The home has since been placed on the National Register of Historical Record and is a tourist attraction for the young and old alike. Leitchfield offers a thriving community with our many industrial locations to provide different professions and trades to our residents and neighboring communities. Leitchfield is also proud to present the recently opened Leitchfield Aquatic Center. The Aquatic Center offers a 217,000-gallon pool complete with a lazy river, slide, lap pool and tot pools. Leitchfield is also home to the Freedom and Fiddlin’ Festivals that are held in conjunction each July. The Fiddlin’ Festival is nationally sanctioned and brings talent from all over the United States to compete. Leitchfield offers the small town feel with progressive opportunities and is the perfect location to settle down with a family or start a business. We love Leitchfield and know you will, too. On behalf of the City of Caneyville and City Commissioners, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Caneyville. Our City was founded in 1840 just below the forks of Caney Creek, for whose cane bottoms it was named. We are next to the Western Kentucky Parkway, as well as only 14 miles from Rough River State Park. Our City is a small community with a big heart. Currently, we have just completed a new ballfield complex, including new playground equipment, as well as a new walking trail for our community. We are remodeling our old Caneyville High School, home of the 1962 and 1968 District and Regional Basketball Champs, both teams representing our community in the semi-finals, to serve as a community/wellness center. Each April, the alumni meet at the school for a dinner and reunion, filling our small community with many happy memories. Local area Church groups present an Easter Drama, working long hours together for a wonderful presentation. Caneyville is home to the annual Caneyville Community Fair and Homecoming in October. The community works together with the Caneyville Community Club each year to make this another special time for everyone. Our local Bank of Caneyville hosts the annual Christmas tree lighting, where students from our elementary school choir sing, and Santa comes by to talk to all the children. We continue to see citizens in our community step up and take on roles to beautify and grow our quaint little city. We are proud that our city offers a committed Volunteer Fire Department, as well as a full-time Police Officer. These individuals are called on all hours for many different reasons, and they are always ready to serve our community. We are also very proud of our K-5 Elementary School! Caneyville Elementary strives to prepare the children for a bright future! Our City boasts of a rich heritage. Many of our businesses have been serving our City for many years. We hope you will visit often and long, and if you are looking for a place to put down roots or start a business, you have just found the perfect location. We love Caneyville and feel you would, too! We welcome you to come join us! James P. Embry Mayor, City of Caneyville The Caneyville City Commission meets in regular session on the second Monday of each month. Looking for a small town filled with charm, history, warm and friendly faces, and lots of community pride? Look no further than Clarkson. Just north-east of Leitchfield, Clarkson is a gem of a city that boasts an authentic small-town, southern feel. With unique locally-owned restaurants, a beautiful park, the hugely popular Honeyfest, all the recreational opportunities of Lake Nolin, and quick access to Elizabethtown, Clarkson residents have found the perfect spot to call home. And though the city’s history runs deep, many of its amenities are brand new. Area students keep ahead of the learning curve with the beautiful new, technologicallyadvanced elementary school which was recently built on Millerstown Road. Just down the street a new community center and city hall saw its grand opening late last year. The center boasts facilities for all sorts of gatherings in addition to offices for city officials and the Chief of Police. The building’s Redhawk Room is dedicated to preserved memorabilia from Clarkson’s school and even features a beautifully-restored section of the past school’s gym floor as its centerpiece. The town’s park plays host to scores of little athletes throughout the warmer months and includes fun playground equipment for little ones and a beautiful walking trail for the whole family to enjoy. Clarkson is also home to Kelley Beekeeping Company, a rapidly-expanding business which has become an integral part of the city and a great source of pride. In honor of the long local history with beekeeping, the long-standing Honeyfest is held each September, drawing in enormous crowds who enjoy an exciting parade, live music, carnival rides, and craft and artisan booths of all sorts as well as fun events like a pet show, run for the honey and cooking contest. Clarkson officials work hard to support local businesses and the hard-working citizens who call it home. Stop by City Hall today to visit with Mayor Bonnie Henderson, City Clerk Alicia Hayes, and Chief of Police Buck Meredith. 8 2015 WELCOME TO GRAYSON COUNTY Index of Advertisers 62 Service Center.................................................... 36 American Legion...................................................... 48 Bank of Clarkson.......................................................13 Beehive Homes of Grayson County........................ 54 Best Grocery............................................................. 17 Bluegrass Family Health.......................................... 25 Cash Express........................................................... 24 Clarkson Baptist Church......................................... 47 ECTC Leitchfield........................................................21 Farm & Home: Realty & Auction..... WELCOME TO GRAYSON COUNTY 2015 11 Economic Development In Grayson County, the building and growing of business truly is a community effort. Guided by the Leitchfield/ Grayson County Industrial Development Corporation (LGCIDC), Grayson County promotes business and economic growth through a collaborative effort that encompasses all. With partners such as the Cities of Leitchfield, Clarkson, and Caneyville, Grayson County, Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center, Grayson County Schools and the Grayson County Technology Center, the LGCIDC, and the local Elizabethtown Community and Technical College campus, “Everyone has a seat at the table,” said LGCIDC Executive Director Dudley Cooper. “I don’t think you could have a more collaborative spirit,” Cooper said. The local IDC is involved with every industry located in Grayson County and serves to bring in new industries, help them start up locally, and promote and encourage expansions. Some such local expansions include Plastikon, which looks to add 100,000-square-feet to its Leitchfield location, result- MTD employees offer a tour of their facility. ing in the creation of 65 to 100 new, local jobs; North Grayson Holdings, LLC dba Site-Safe’s move to Leitchfield to house all of its operations under one roof; and MTD’s addition of a plastics line that entailed remodeling nearly half of its building. Grayson County’s success with industrial and economic growth is, in large part, also thanks to its location. “The proximity to being on I-65 in less than 30 minutes is one of our greatest assets,” said Cooper, adding that local real estate is also a frac- tion of the cost of other areas located so close to I-65. Additionally, within less than a two-hour drive of Leitchfield, one can find “excellent” arts and culture, fly out or in from the Louisville International Airport, and earn a college degree in anything, Cooper said. Grayson County is also fortunate to be nestled between “the twin lakes” (Rough River Lake and Nolin Lake); have a school system from which 94 percent of its students graduate; and a local hospital that serves the entire region, according to Cooper. Grayson County receives its utilities from Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation—who also collaborate with the LGCIDC— and Kentucky Utilities. The county is also served by P & L Railroad. Between the City, County, and Industrial Foundation, Grayson County has a multitude of building sites and future development opportunities. “Come grow with us,” Cooper said. Whether it’s discovering new interests in an elementary club, learning to “dress for success,” finally hitting that 30+ ACT score, or achieving state, even national recognition, the overarching commitment is to help each student reach their individual potential, prepared to take on 21st Century challenges. Grayson County Schools believes that growing college and career ready students takes place in all facets of their lives - academics, college and career preparation, the arts, extracurricular, leadership, service, health and wellness, and safety, and strives to give them opportunities to succeed through multiple channels. One example already having a direct impact on students is the Technology Center’s CMM machining program. The program was launched two years ago thanks to industry partners and the Board’s commitment to providing students with career-ready skills for highdemand and high-wage jobs. A second health services program opened last fall due to strong student demand for preparation in the growing field. There is also discussion of adding an industrial maintenance program, another high-demand field. Grayson County students at all grade levels consistently excel across the board in academics, arts and athletics. District “Unbridled Learning” scores, the state testing and accountability system, have risen in all areas and at all schools. Every school is now “progressing” and the district is in the HIGH SCHOOL best of 2015 Grayson County High School was awarded a Bronze medal ranking in the US News & World Report’s Best High Schools for 2015. The annual rankings include overall student performance on state-required exams, how schools educate their least-advantaged students, and how well they prepare students for college. Of the nearly 30,000 high schools evaluated, only slightly more than 6,700 were ranked Gold, Silver or Bronze. 78th percentile, ahead of the state average. Overall, student achievement has made steady gains, especially in the percentage of students attaining proficient or distinguished status. College and career readiness has increased dramatically for both middle and high school students. And the high school’s graduation rate stands at nearly 94 percent, among the highest in the state. In recent years, record numbers of students have earned a 30 or better on the ACT college admissions test. The latest district scores were the highest composite since juniors statewide were required to be tested five years ago, and at 19.2, was just shy of the 19.4 state average. GCHS students bettered or equaled state scores in both math and science; they also bested statewide college readiness benchmarks in both sub- jects as well as overall. Industry certifications are also on the rise. Numerous AP and dual credit courses give students a head start on college, academically and financially. Grayson County Schools was recently named to the College Board’s District AP Honor Roll for its efforts in this regard. Student achievement is not reflected solely in the classroom. Life lessons are just as often learned on athletic fields, and through the leadership and teamwork opportunities that extracurricular participation provides. The district’s Board members are committed to providing opportunities that will engage students of all interests and provide opportunities for them to grow and excel. And students have done so time and again as teams and as individuals on regional, state, even national stages. learning for all Community Education coordinates many programs throughout Grayson County year round, providing “Lifelong Learning for All.” Among them, Red Ribbon Week is held each fall to educate students and the community about living “drug-free”. In the spring “A Novel Tea,” sponsored by the Grayson County Public Library, brings local and regional authors to town. Community Education comes in many forms. I want to thank all of our employees for making TLRMC so much more than just another place to work, but truly a ‘Best Place to Work’,” said Meriwether. “Being name one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky is a wonderful accomplishment,” said Kimberley Rayls, Director of Human Resources at TLRMC. “Our staff members are a critical aspect to our success and it is very important to our management team that our employees feel appreciated and valued. It would be impossible to serve this community without the dedication and expertise our staff demonstrates on a daily bases.” Also for the third year in a row, Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center in Leitchfield has been named one of the best healthcare organizations to work in the United States. Becker’s Hospital Review, a national healthcare journal based in Chicago, has published the 2015 edition of its “150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare.” TLRMC is the only hospital in Kentucky to receive the honor. Over 300 Grayson County kindergartners from Caneyviile, Lawler, and Wilkey elementary schools and the Leitchfield Christian Academy came to the 2015 event on April 28 and 29. The students also learned about getting stitches, mending broken bones, how germs can affect the body and the importance of proper hand washing to good health. TLRMC is one of only 314 hospitals to achieve the Top Performer distinction for the past three consecutive years. TLRMC and its employees have a major impact on the economy of Grayson County. According to the latest figures available from the Kentucky Hospital Association, in 2012, Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center spent nearly $23 million on employee wages and salaries and purchases of supplies and services. These dollars have a “ripple effect” as they move through the larger economy, supporting other businesses and jobs in the community as well as generating tax revenue used to fund state programs. The hospital also has a major impact on services provided by the governments serving Grayson County residents. The KHA concluded that TLRMC is responsible for approximately $2.1 million in state and local tax revenue through the taxes they pay directly and tax revenue generated from their employees. In early 2015, Kentucky Auditor Adam Edelen released a special report on the financial strength of rural hospitals. The report concludes that fully one-third of Kentucky’s rural hospitals were rated as being in poor financial health and could be in danger of having to make difficult decisions such as cutting employees, eliminating services or possibly even having to close the hospital. Residents of Grayson and surrounding counties received good news in the report, however. Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center is ranked as having the sixth best financial position of the 44 rural Kentucky hospitals listed. When you take out the two smaller, Critical Access hospitals ranked higher, the news is even better. TLRMC is rated fourth among all comparable rural acute care hospitals in the commonwealth. “The importance of rural hospitals cannot be overstated,” Auditor Edelen said. “They provide healthcare to 45 percent of Kentuckians and serve a disproportionate share of low-income and elderly citizens. In many rural communities in particular, hospitals are the first or second largest employer and typically pay higher-thanaverage wages than other employers.” Kentucky is the ninth most rural state in the country. TLRMC Chief Financial Officer Scott Arndell attributes the hospital’s strong financial health and high ranking to a series of good decisions and hard work over the past 30 years. “First of all, we have recruited a medical staff that is bigger and better than what most communities like Leitchfield have,” Arndell said. “Because of that, we are able to offer a much larger, wider scope of services than typical rural hospitals. This means more people living here are able to stay close to home for their healthcare.” In addition to Obstetrics (OB) and orthopedic surgery as examples of services not typically provided at rural hospitals, Arndell mentioned the hospital’s general surgeons. “Most rural hospitals only have one general surgeon on staff and some don’t have any. We have three,” Arndell said. “That sets us apart from many hospitals and helps our bottom line.” Another factor in their success, according to Arndell, is the willingness of hospital leaders to invest in newer, more advanced equipment than most comparable hospitals. Lastly, Arndell mentioned the hospital’s workforce as being a major reason for their success to this point. “Our employees have had to outwork most other hospitals’ employees,” Arndell said. “Because Grayson County has a higher number of residents on Medicaid, our margin for error is very small. We have had no choice but to ask our employees to work harder because we are getting paid less than providers with a larger percentage of patients with private insurance.” Combining the latest technology with an experienced, highly trained workforce has positioned Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center in a strong position to weather the turbulent future in the coming years. 354 Jack Galloway Ln, West View 6 bedrooms. 4.5 baths Lake front/12+/Acres, $425,000 809 old Elkron Rd, Brandenburg Multi-family, Income property $525,000 226 Fairgrounds Rd, Hardinsburg 5 bedroom, 4 bath, Acreage $575,000 552 Outpost Rd, Leitchfield SOLD $209,000 882 Autumn Ridge RD, Falls of Rough, SOLD $259,000 Meadow Lake LN, Hardinsburg SOLD $259,000 I al nt Re me o nc ke La 241 Marina Pt RD, Falls of Rough 3 bedroom, 2 bath $209,000 t on Fr 2248 Cannon Pt Rd, McDaniels 3 bedroom, 2 bath $209,900 150 Hickory Grove, Leitchfield 15 +/- acres, minutes from lake and Leitchfield, Barn, Home, Make Offer! There is much afoot at the Historic Jack Thomas House. As you may know, our long time President of fourteen years, Ken Robinson, recently retired. Both he and his wife Nancy have been the pillars of the Society for many years, and they are both very deserving of a break from the hustle and bustle of our organization. With the new vacancies in the Board of Directors, we have scrambled to get back on track. We have added a table full of new members that we hope everyone will take the time to meet and greet at one of our general meetings or open houses. Please welcome the 2014 Board of Directors: • President Scott Carter • Vice-President Scotty Gor • Treasurer Tina Gary • Secretary Rose Booth • Board Members Mike Fleener, Joyce Thomas Legg York, Kelly Stevenson, Denise Embry, Rick Alvey, Allison Helm, Eddie Lampton, Jeremy Logsdon, Greg Bernard, and Robert Wright. We have a diversified group of directors from teachers and archaeologists, to business owners and councilmen, engineers and carpenters, and everyone in between. We have a lot of great ideas, many projects and events planned, and room for anyone who is willing to help. Please remember, we are a non-profit; none of our directors are paid. We are all here for the love of Grayson County and its history. Our only paid employee is Phyllis Webb our librarian hostess, and her knowledge of the house and library are priceless. We are not perfect, we make mistakes, but history is full of them! IF YOU MISSED IT Brittany Wise | GC News-Gazette Visitors to a recent Historical Society meeting were treated to walking or trolley tours which visited approximately 50 historical sites in downtown Leitchfield. Welcome to the Jack Thomas House! We have had some great donations made to the house in the past few months. One of the most important is the donation of the Adjutant Generals Reports for the Civil War Confederate Army. For people researching family history, this is a great acquisition! Please remember, we are always looking for donations pertaining to Grayson County and its families and communities. If you have an item that you would not like to leave your family, we are always glad to take an item on loan. Please contact us for more information. The Grayson County Historical Society strives to preserve the history of the county and make its findings open for public use through a museum and research library. We own the oldest brick building in the county, the Jack Thomas House, on East Main Street in Leitchfield, Kentucky. The museum is open for tours for a fee. It has a meeting room which is used by the Historical Society and the local Woman’s Club. This room, as well as the dining room, can also be rented for other functions. The research library is open to the public at no charge. There are three general meetings a year held the second Tuesdays of March, June and October at 7:00 P.M. Programs for those meetings consist of a speaker and refreshments. The Historical Society Board meets monthly. The Grayson County Historical Society owns three other buildings besides the Jack Thomas House - the Buchanan Log Cabin on the grounds of the Jack Thomas House, the Walnut Grove School near Caneyville, and the Edwards School west of Short Creek. If you missed it, Grayson County Clerk, Mrs. Sherry Weedman was our guest speaker, along with her husband Myron, at our March general meeting. She put on an excellent presentation about the history of the Grayson County Court Houses and the post of Grayson County Clerk. The presentation was recorded and we hope to have it up on our You Tube channel soon. Please take the time to check it out. While you’re at it, please visit our Facebook page. It is the best place to get up-to-date information on the happenings of the Grayson County Historical Society. Even smaller communities such as Big Clifty, Ready, Anneta, Wax, Falls of Rough, Peonia, Shrewsbury and Millwood all have unique benefits and friendly faces as well. Once the perfect community and the perfect home have been chosen, the next step is finding the perfect loan. When deciding on what home loan is best for you, the length of time you plan to own a property may have a strong influence on the type of loan you choose. For example, if you plan to stay in a home for 10 years of longer, a traditional fixed-rate mortgage may be your best bet. But if you plan on owning a home for a very short period (5 years of fewer), then the low introductory rate of an adjustable-rate mortgage may make the most financial sense. In general, ARMs have the lowest introductory interest rates, followed by hybrid loans, and then traditional fixed-rate mortgages.
