1000 and one night in Antalya
The Mardan Palace hotel in Antalya is a place of opulence and probably the most expensive luxury resort in
Europe. The building of the hotel cost $ 1.4 billion. It has the Mediterranean’s largest swimming pool, a swim
reef which is containing 3,000 Mediterranean and tropical fish. 560 rooms, a 1,100 m2 spa, and its own
beach containing 9,000 tons of sand imported from Egypt are offering a perfect getaway from everyday
life. 10,000 m2 of gold-leaf, 500,000 crystals and 23,000 m2 of Italian marble are turning a holiday to an
experience of 1000 and one nights in the Orient.

Dubai Meydan City was launched in 2007 at the Dubai World Cup,
a Thoroughbred Horse Race annually held since 1996. The whole
city-project was planned to be finished in 2012 but it is still under
construction and the planning phase has not come to an end yet.
The Meydan Hotel is situated right next to the famous race
course, and was designed to host guests visiting the races,
offering 284 luxurious rooms. Translated from Arabic “Meydan”
means “meeting place”.

An oasis in Cairo
The Fairmont Towers Heliopolis Hotel is
situated next to the international airport
in Cairo. It has 594 bedrooms and offers
a huge luxurious spa.
The Fairmont hotels and resorts can be
found all around the world.
Heliopolis (New Cairo) is one of the nicest
places to live in Cairo and dates back to
ancient times, when it was a place to
worship the god Atum, but the ancient
city declined after the Persians took
control of Egypt in 525 BC. The modern
city of Heliopolis was established in 1907
by the Belgian Baron Empain, with a
streetcar line running between Heliopolis
and central Cairo.

State-of-the-art-living
The Trump Towers are in the heart of
Istanbul. Some of the apartments are
over-looking the whole city. Depending on
the angle of view, you get the impression
of two towers melting into one single
building.

Vitreous art
The towers of 15 Alice Lane are designed
and built with a new glass technology that
has been used in South Africa for the first
time. The glass facade is altering with the
changing daylight and changes its look
constantly.
Standing in the atriums gives you the
impression of being in a canyon. The play
of light outside the building continues
inside.

Standing tall
Portside is a 139 metre
skyscraper in Cape Town,
South Africa. It is the city’s
tallest building and is Cape
Town’s first significant
skyscraper developed in
the central business
district in 15 years. In 2008
it was initially proposed
that the building should
include a hotel and be
147.6 m above sea level.
But during the design and
planning phase, it was
decided to keep the
building below a certain
height so as not to obscure
the view of Table Mountain.
The building has been
awarded a five star Green
Star rating from the Green
Building Council of South
Africa as compliant
technologies have been

Traditionally futuristic
The distinguishing feature of the iconic towers is
their protective skin of 2,000 umbrella-like glass
elements that automatically open and close depending on the intensity of sunlight. Inspired by the
‘mashrabiya’, geometrically-designed wooden lattice
screens that have been used to fill windows of
traditional Arabic architecture since the 14th
century, the ‘intelligent’ façade of the Al Bahar
Towers is dynamically controlled by a building
management system. The adjustable shades help
reduce interior heat gains caused by sunlight by
around 50 percent. The eco-friendly towers are one
of the first buildings in the Gulf to receive the
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Silver rating. They were placed second at the
Emporis Skyscraper Award 2012 – the world’s
premier honorary event for high-rise architecture.

Health-conscious
Located just 35 kilometres southeast of the UAE’s capital, Abu
Dhabi, the Mafraq Hospital gets its name from the Arabic word
Mafraq, meaning ‘meeting of roads’. An apt description of the
hospital’s unique location at the intersection of major roadways,
the term ‘meeting of roads’ also symbolises the conjunction of
over 50 nationalities working together to treat patients of all ages
and walks of life from across the globe.
The award-winning hospital has been operating since 1983 in the
original buildings. The new hospital building will be operational
from the end of 2014 and will replace the current Mafraq Hospital.
It is one of the best hospitals in the U.A.E.

The Arena da Amazônia is a football stadium in Manaus, in the Brazilian
state of Amazonas. The stadium offers 44,310 seats and was the venue for
4 football games in the football world cup in 2014. The arena was designed in
2009 by the German architects gmp as a replacement of the Estádio Vivaldo
Lima (known as Vivaldão) built in 1970.
24
The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has the
nickname “The Sunflower” because of the
shape of its roof. This stadium has been
designed and built on the occasion of the
football world cup in South Africa in 2010.
With 46,000 seats it is a bit bigger than

Across all areas
The water recycling is an
important issue in this
building. All the grey water
from the basins and showers
is harvested and clarified with
enzymes and combined with
filtered rainwater which is
used for plant irrigation and
the flushing of urinals and
WCs.

Future prospects.
Energy consumption is
minimised by making use of
free cooling where possible
and a 980 m² photovoltaic
farm will further provide
renewable energy. Rainwater
is harvested and stored in
below-ground concrete tanks
and fresh air is provided using
a floor displacement ventilation system.

Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB),
founded in 1838, is the oldest and largest
banking institution of Mauritius. It is also
the oldest banking institution south of the
Sahara and one of the oldest banks of the
Commonwealth to have preserved its
original name.
This unusually shaped building is
located outside Port Louis. The 10-storey
10,000 m² building was the first in the
Southern Hemisphere to achieve a
BREEAM rating, through attention to
orientation, shading, renewable energy
and rainwater re-use. The carefully
chosen building orientation ensures that
the façades face due north and south with
generous overhangs which virtually
eliminate all direct solar gains.

For public bathrooms Geberit offers

Drinking water enters the house either in Geberit Mepla
pipes (see picture on the left) which are made of metal
and plastic, or in Geberit Mapress pipes, which come in
different metals like stainless steel, CuNiFe, CrNi steel,
carbon steel or copper. The choice of pipe will depend on
the area of application. The Mapress pipes not only carry
