Bali has a tropical climate appropriate to its proximity to the equator. Temperatures in May range
between minimum 25 degrees C and 32 Degrees C, with humidity 60%. Occasionally rainfall can
also be expected but usually at night or very early morning. The central mountain area is typically
cooler than the lower coastal areas especially at night. It can be cool on the beach in the evenings.
Getting There
Need assistance with booking flights, check out Bali Discovery Tours who are agents for Virgin
Australia http://www.balidiscovery.com/flights/flightorder.as. For the Australian delegates who
purchase their flight tickets from Bali Discovery Tours they will extend VIP assistance through
customs and immigration. Their rates are exactly the same as those available off the Virgin
Website and payment can be with a VISA or Master Card.
Visa and Taxes
Check with local Indonesian Embassy or Consulate re your visa requirements. Many foreign
visitors pay US$25 on entry. Don’t forget 150,000rp (at time of producing this brochure) for
departure tax.
Transport
The taxi fare from Denpasar airport to Sanur is around 150,000rp. Transport is usually by taxi or
negotiate transport with vehicles outside the hotel grounds.
Accommodation
All delegates including keynote and invited speakers are asked to make their own accommodation
bookings.
The Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel offers a conference rate of US$89 per night, booked direct with
them. See booking form included in brochure (page 11)

Epithermal Au-Ag and Carlin-type Gold Deposit Short Course
By Greg Corbett (Consultant, Sydney) and Steve Garwin (Consultant, Perth)
Venue: Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel Time: 08:30am - 17.30pm
3
This one day short course will be divided between epithermal Au-Ag by Greg Corbett in the morning
and Carlin deposits by Steve Garwin in the afternoon.
The epithermal Au-Ag component by Greg Corbett uses Pacific Rim exploration examples to initially
consider some geological exploration tools (alteration, structure and breccias), and then how
an analysis of the controls to mineralisation (host rocks, structure, style of mineralisation and
mechanism of Au deposition) might help to target discoveries, or understand known ore systems.
The Carlin deposit component will present the geology, styles of hydrothermal alteration and
mineralization, geochemical expression and geophysical signature of Carlin-type gold deposits.
Examples include deposits and districts in Nevada, Southeast Asia, China and elsewhere. The
course will focus on vectors to ore and successful methods that have been applied towards
deposit discovery.
This course will be of interest to exploration- and mine- geologists who wish to learn more about
the characteristics of these important gold deposit types.
PresenterS

The mining industry is known world-wide
for its lead role in occupational health and
safety. All Symposium participants will be
required to comply with health and safety
laws, regulations, recommendations and
leader requests.
Specifically:
• There will be compulsory safety
inductions prior to all activities.
• For all activities there will be a
designated leader responsible for safety
and she/he is your first communication
point on any safety issue.
• All safety and health issues should be
reported to the responsible person
immediately.
• On mine visits and exploration sites
delegates will comply fully with the host
company safety policy.
Structural Geology and Resources
Up-skilling field workshop, West Lombok
5
By Gerard Tripp (Barrick Australasia) and Julian Vearncombe (SJS Resource Management)
Desktop and field exploration activities daily. Venue: West Lombok Time: To be notified
With desktop, field mapping and drill core exercises this workshop will run on the Southern Arc
exploration properties in Lombok. The field workshop is designed to introduce participants to
exploration methodologies with particular emphasis on structural geology skills. This is a training
exercise and participants will individually collect, analyse and plot data. The workshop assumes a
basic geological knowledge. Specifically, the course will cover:
• Field mapping
• Diamond core logging including structural logging
• Brittle and ductile structures
• Exploration geology in Indonesia - porphyry and epithermal environments
• The recognition of structural elements and their measurement
• An overview of structure logging methods, errors and preferred techniques
• Vein morphology
• Precious metal and copper mineralisation
The Up-skilling workshop will depart Bali by flight to Lombok early morning Saturday 30th and return
on the afternoon/evening of the 1st June. Flight and transfer costs (from Sanur Paradise Plaza
Hotel) are not included in the registration. Accommodation (local hotel Bola Bola) and transport on
Lombok are generously supplied by Southern Arc. The organisers thank Mike Andrews, Andy Rowe
and Hamish Campbell for their assistance and contribution to this workshop.
• On all field trips and mine visits
participants are required to wear highvisibility clothing, long sleaved shirts,
long trouser, wide brimmed sun hat (or
supplied safety hard hat) and steel-toe
capped safety boots.
• Delegates should in confidence and
in advance notify the Symposium
organiser of any personal health or other
safety factor that may impact on the
Symposium, field trip or mine visits.
