In spring, more than 1000 cherry trees come in bloom. In autumn, more than 500 maple trees change their leaves into beautiful autumn colors. There are events to entertain people when the blossoms and leaves are in their best season. Two large pots containing liquid indigo are set on the floor of the thatched cottage built way back in Edo era. On the upper floor you can see his collection of indigo fabrics from all over the world. You can buy his pieces of work in the shop area. All residents in the village test the water guns simultaneously on May 20 and Dec.1. Many tourists and amateur photographers come to see the fantastic view. More than three quarters of the cottages in this village are thatched (kayabuki) roofs that show us soothing green roofs in summer and snowy white in winter. Kayabuki roof is a rare and valuable sight to see in Japan today. The cottages spotted along the tiered lands make the classical scenery of good old Japan. The whole district is designated as one of the Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings. There are kayabuki lodgings, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Best recommended place to take photo is by the classic postbox. Kita, Miyama-cho 0771-75-1906 (Miyama Tourism Association) 2 Sonobe lies alongside the San-In Kaido, a major road that runs from Kyoto to San-In District. The road coming from Kyoto c ro s s e s o v e r K a m e o k a and runs through Sonobe to San-In.It is a charming place to stop at for people heading for Miyama and Kyotamba. Vaguely but firmly, you can feel the wonders and deepness of its history; the historical remains of Sonobe Castle, the oldest tenmangu ‘IkimiTenmangu Shrine', and the breathtaking Nihon Velvet Kogyo. 園 部 Sonobe Sonobe Ruri-kei Ravine Located alongside Ooigawa River, which joins Katsuragawa River after flowing over Hozu-Kyo. People enjoy cherry blossoms in spring and fireworks festival in summer by the riverside. You can feel the town’s deep historical atmosphere through hiking in the remains of Yagi Castle, a castle once owned by Christian samurai Joan Naito. If you are lucky you can see the beautiful scenery of ‘sea of clouds’ from up in the castle remains. Sonobe Roadside Station KyotoShinkoetsu Village 八木 An hour and a half drive from Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe. It is within the Kyoto Pref. Nature Park designated as a place of scenic beauty. A 4 km. stroll course alongside the river will take you to waterfalls and rocks of all sizes and show you the marvel of nature. Cherry blossoms in spring and leaves in autumn are also beautiful. The ravine is selected by the Environment Agency as ‘100 Soundscapes of Japan worth handing down to next generation’. Okawachi, Sonobe-cho 0771-68-0050(Nantan City Commerce and Industry Tourism Department) Yagi Just off Sonobe IC of Kyoto-Jukan. Many fans visit here to buy the Sonobe produced specialty rice ‘Onshinmai’ such as Sukoyaka-mai and Renge-mai. You can find various kinds of locally-made safe, reliable, fresh vegetables. Seasonal events like mochi-making are also popular. Sogadani Nawate 15-3, Sonobe-cho 0771-68-1100 Open:9:00-18:00 Closed Mon.(open when it is a holiday) Hiyoshi The dam is a multipurpose dam, one of the biggest in scale in the Kinki District. It is the first dam that is ‘open to public’. You can go and see inside the body of the dam. A prize winner of Japan Dam Award 2013. There are about 30 someiyoshino cherry trees on the right bank and there is a grass park with about 100 someiyoshino and shidarezakura cherry trees on the left bank. It is a lovely sight to see all the dainty flowers in bloom. Ooibashi downstream, Yagi-cho 0771-42-2232(Yagi Tourist Association) 5 Miyama Hiyoshi Dam Shiroyama (Remains of Yagi Castle) A former residence of Joan Naito, a Christian samurai. You can see a magnificent view of the Kameyama basin from the remains of Yagi Castle after a walk up the Shiroyama Nature promenade. If the condition is right, you can see the ‘sea of clouds’ in autumn and winter. Yagi, Yagi-cho 0771-42-2232(Yagi Tourist Association) Hiyoshi Sonobe MAP P13-14 Yagi 日 吉 Hiyoshi, noted as ‘Belly button of Kyoto’, is situated in the center of Kyoto Pref. It has one of the largest dams in Kinki District, the Hiyoshi Dam. There is a roadside station close to the dam with natural onsen and swimming pool. Both are popular spots to visit for tourists and residents. Enjoy barbequing in the roadside station and mountain lodges, go and spend active holidays in cottages surrounded by green. Hiyoshi 4 Miyama Yagi Hiyoshi Seigenji Temple Sonobe MAP P13-14 Hiyoshi Sonobe Yagi Yagi A buddist priest Mokujiki-Shonin wandered all over Japan, sculpturing his unique sentaibutsu statues wherever he went. He arrived here at Seigenji Temple when he was 89 years old and stayed here for 5 months. It is said that he sculptured 28 statues during his stay. Today, 22 of his statues are placed in this temple, all of them with a humorous and loving expression. There are also Jurokurakan and Shaka statues. It has radon onsen and a hotspring-swimming pool to enjoy in bathing suits. It has aesthetic menus like sauna bag or ferment bath, restaurants, bakery &café, and manga corner. You can enjoy the ‘Kyoto Illumiere’ from November through March, one of the biggest illumination events in Kansai District. Okawachi Hirotani 1-14, Sonobe-cho 0771-65-5001 Yagi Kyoto Taishakuten Temple The temple, entitled Shiunzan, was founded by Kiyomaro Wakeno in 780 A.D. Alongside the temple approach where people enjoy spring blossom and autumn leaves, there are 108 ‘Bells of hope’ in line, looking like a set of big prayer beads. ‘Bell of Tora-san’ from the movie is also placed here. Mr. Fujimoto, a craftsman of velvet, will take you around the historical factory that was built in the Taisho era. Ten thousand thin wires are woven into the six meter textiles which are made into dainty piles of velvet. You will be thrilled to see this technique that has been handed down from Edo era. Yatsuhashi is shaped like koto, a Japanese zither. There is a café where you can relax with a wide view of nature, ideal for a rest from driving. The place is filled with scent of cinnamon. You can make your own yatsuhashi to take home (reservation required). Since the day that Genzo Takebe, who also appears in the story of the play ‘Sugawaradenjutenaraikagami’ first worshipped the place holy, the shrine has been carefully handed down to 38 successors for over 1,100 years. This historical shrine surrounded by holy cedars and plum trees is kept with respect. Misonomachi 1-67, Sonobe-cho 0771-62-0535 Located just below the Hiyoshi Dam. A superb place to feel the nature. It is a multipurpose roadside station for families to enjoy barbeques, various types of sports activities, foods, indoor swimming pool, as well as the good natural onsen. Local delicacies like ‘Hiyoshi Dam Curry’ and ‘Kuromame soymilk herbal-Ramen’ are popular. You can buy locally-made fresh vegetables and enjoy the free of charge foot bath here. Barbeque area is fully equipped so that you don’t have to bring anything. It is also perfectly okay to bring in your own outdoor goods. People silently walk across the burnt ground barefoot. It is a ritual of walking across fire to pray for a peaceful year. Second Sunday---Kyoto-Taishakuten Spring Grand Festival (Funaeda, Yagi-cho/ Kyoto Taishakuten Temple) The ritual is conducted solemnly around the main hall. Tea ceremonies and drums give brilliance to the festival. Mid May---Otauematsuri Ritual (Kita, Miyama-cho/ Miyama Kayabukino-Sato) A ritual to pray for abundant crop for the year. There will be ancient court music played while rice-planting maidens in navy kasuri kimono and red sleeve-cover and sedge hat stand in line on the rice field and plant the seedlings. 20th---Miyama Kayabuki-no-Sato Water Spraying (Kita, Miyama-cho/ Miyama Kayabuki-no-Sato) Discharge test for water guns equipped in the village cottages. Many amateur photographers come to take pictures of the sight. Late May---Miyama Cycle Road (Kita, Miyama-cho/ around Miyama branch of the city hall) A unique bicycle race in Japan that uses public roads. Anyone can participate in this race, from beginners to athletes in full speed. June Early June---Season open for Ayu fishing (Miyamagawa river) First Sunday---Otauematsuri Ritual (Takei, Sonobe-cho/ Make Shrine) Maidens for the ritual dance to songs and drums and use chimaki sticks to express rice-seedling planting. It is a dance to pray for abundant crop for the year. Late June---Season open for Ayu fishing (Ooigawa river) July 14th---Toutanokagura Ritual (Touta, Miyama-cho/ Yasaka Shrine) Marching group of tengu(long nosed goblin), oni(ogre), hyottoko(funny faced man), otafuku(plump woman),and jii(old man) dance to the sacred music performing ‘Kagura’, ‘Sangiri’, and ‘Nigimakura’ . Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. Mid July---Hiyoshi Summer Fireworks Festival (Naka, Hiyoshi-cho/ around Springs Hiyoshi) The gate room of Hiyoshi Dam will be open to public. There will be fish catching games for children and food & souvenir wagons in the evening. Big skyrocket fireworks are shot from the bottom of the dam. August First Weekend---Miyama Cycle Green Tour (Miyama-cho) A series of events to enjoy nature activities Tawarano Onda Dance Ohno Dam Maple Festival and cycling. There are various programs to devour the vast nature of Miyama through cycling for all generations. 14th---Kyoto Nantan City Fireworks Festival (Yagi-cho/ around Ooibashi Bridge) Thousands of lanterns will be floated on the river to send off spirits of ancestors. After the floating, 5000 skyrockets color the sky glamorously. Mid August---Ayu Festival(Miyama) (Naka, Miyama-cho/ Miyama Town Nature Cultural Village) You can enjoy ayu catching in the crystal clear water of Miyamagawa. There will be food wagons, mocha-making, skyrocket fireworks, and bon-dances. 20th 23rd---Rokusainenbutsuodori Ritual (Misato, Yagi-cho/ Saikoji Temple) On the nights of the rituals for the high monk (20th) and Jizo-bon (23rd) , yukata dressed people dance striking drums and bells. Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. 24th---Makiyamanotaimatsu Torch Ritual (Nakaseki, Hiyoshi-cho/ Fumonnin) A complex fire-worshipping festival that is a mixture of mandoro lantern ritual and worshipping of Atago mountain by the Kitayama and Tamba people. Fire-lit torches big and small blaze in the summer night sky. Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. 24th---Agematsu(Matsuage) (Tsurugaoka・Morisato・Ashiu, Miyama-cho) A tall cypress lumber called toroki holds a fire catcher at the top. People through their burning torches into the catcher to pray for family well- being and abundant crop for the year. Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. September Late September---Memorial Service for Tamaiwa Jizo Statue (Yotsuya, Hiyoshi-cho/ Tamaiwa-Jizo statue) The jizo is known as the caretaker for longlife and safe labor. It was made in memory of Lady priest Yaobikuni of Wakasa. Many people gather for the ceremony. October On National Sports Holiday---Karasu Dengaku Dance (Kashihara, Miyama-cho/ Kawakami Shrine) A funny dance per formed to pray for abundant crop and to ward off karasu(crows). Prefectural Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. Mid October---Make Shrine Shinkosai Ritual (Takei, Sonobe-cho/ Make Shrine) Portable shrine and chigo children march along. Performances of ‘Neri’ and ‘Sumo ritual’ will be shown at midnight in shrine resting spots. On the second day there will be yabusame (archery shot from a galloping horse) and ritual of shaking paper lined wand and archery by chigo children. Mid October---Tawarano Kakkosuri (Tawara, Hiyoshi-cho/ Taji Shrine) Dancers of kakkosuri holding kakko drums dance to the music of flutes and drums and Sanyare songs around and around the four chigo children. Kyoto Nantan City Fireworks Festival 21st---Yabusame Ritual (Hidokoro, Yagi-cho/ Hatahisa Shrine) Men in traditional game costumes shoot arrows to a cedar board from a galloping horseback to fortune-tell harvest of the coming year. Third Sunday---Umagake of Hiyoshi Shrine (Goma, Hiyoshi-cho/ Hiyoshi Shrine) A ritual of yabusame in the autumn festival. The horses run in the horse track in front of the shrine and the rider performs arrow-shooting.
