Linda Kristjanson Vice-Chancellor and President Swinburne University of Technology | Graduations Ceremony Program | August 2015 3 History of the university The Swinburnes lived for many generations in Northumberland, in the north of England. In early times, the family owned a castle on the banks of the Swin Burn, the brook of the boars. By 1245 the Swinburne coat of arms was ‘Gules: three boars heads argent’. The arms George Swinburne arrived in Melbourne in 1886, aged twenty-five. His early days in Melbourne were spent setting up gas plants and bringing gas-light to the cities and towns. As his business stature increased, he entered State Parliament and became a minister. The crest Swinburne was established as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College by George Swinburne and the first students were enrolled in 1909, when classes began in carpentry, plumbing and blacksmithing. In 1913 the institution changed its name to Swinburne Technical College, to commemorate the Honourable George Swinburne. Soon afterwards, a boys’ junior technical school and the first girls’ technical school were established. The motto Following an extensive reorganisation of advanced education in Victoria in the late 1970s, Swinburne was given the power to grant bachelor degrees. The first of these was awarded at a conferring ceremony held on 21 May 1981 at the Camberwell Civic Centre. In universities, a mace is used as a symbol of institutional authority and it is carried in procession before the Chancellor as a symbolic weapon of protection. The ceremonial items of the office of the Chancellor of Swinburne University were designed by Emeritus Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen, former Pro Vice-Chancellor, Internationalisation. Fabricated from Queensland silky oak, sterling silver and gold, the mace has eight facets resolving as an open silver finial and crown which contains a carving of the rampant boar from the Swinburne coat of arms. The chair also has eight divisions on the seat and back with an engraved silver boar and the Southern Cross on the upper back. Artists and craftspeople involved in the project with the designer were Ian Higgs, cabinet maker, Geoffrey Dunne, Swinburne design graduate, Sue Wraight, netsuke carver and Hendrik Forster and Marion Marshall, silversmiths. Civic contributions made towards the purchase of these items included the former City of Prahran for the University for the Mace, the former City of Hawthorn for the Chancellor’s Chair and the former Shire of Lillydale for the Chancellor’s Gown. In 1992, Swinburne achieved university status with the passage by the Parliament of Victoria of the Swinburne University of Technology Act. This marked not only Swinburne’s distinguished history as a provider of further education, but the beginning of a new period of growth and innovation for Swinburne. In recent years, Swinburne has progressed to become one of the world’s leading research‑intensive teaching universities and a leader in online education, expanding the educational opportunities available to a new generation of learners. Swinburne’s emphasis is on high-quality, engaged teaching and research in science, technology and innovation – teaching and research that makes a difference in the lives of individuals and contributes to national economic and social objectives. Swinburne holds a unique place among educational institutions in Australia in the link that persists between it and the founder and his family. The conferring of a modification of the family’s coat of arms preserves and strengthens that link. 4 Swinburne University of Technology | Graduations Ceremony Program | August 2015 The basic colours of red and white, and the cinquefoils charged on the shield, commemorate the arms of the Swinburne family. The demi-Boar and the cinquefoil perpetuate the Swinburne connection; the book is symbolic of learning. The College of Arms’ translation of the motto is: Achievement through learning. The flag The basic colours of red and white with cinquefoils. The mace and the chair Academic regalia The academic dress worn at Swinburne today is a modification of everyday dress worn by scholars and teachers in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Swinburne has consistently pursued a policy of ensuring quality and critical mass by investing resources in areas of research concentration. Swinburne actively encourages and values its international and industry connections which enrich and enhance the research efforts and careers of our academic staff and students alike. The graduates listed below have each made a valuable contribution to Swinburne and their respective fields of research. Graduates for awards from Swinburne Research will be presented by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Future Manufacturing), Professor Geoffrey Brooks. Doctor of Philosophy Md Shamsul Arefin Thesis title: Fluid structure interaction (FSI) of the left ventricle (LV) in developing the next generation ventricular assist device (VAD) system The broad objective of Dr Arefin’s research was to apply innovative engineering approaches to analyse the Left Ventricle (LV) of the human heart in order to provide the underpinning knowledge required to develop a “next generation” Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) using wireless control. In doing so, the prime focus of this research was eyed on the numerical investigations required to determine hemodynamic parameters and the structural changes in an LV model. The Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) scheme was determined to be an appropriate means of investigating and determining the functionalities of the LV. All these numerical investigations provide useful insights on the LV in various conditions and the data will be helpful in developing a next generation VAD model. Matthew James Davey Thesis title: The performance of post-tensioned concrete wide band beams at exterior column connections under seismic loading Post-tensioned concrete wide band beams at exterior column connections under seismic loading floor construction is very common in Australia, despite a lack of research into how it performs during earthquake events. The results of experiments and computer modelling presented in Dr Davey’s thesis help to further understand how these connections behave and how to achieve greater performance under seismic loading. Masoud Dehghan Thesis title: Development of thermomechanically improved epoxy adhesives using carbon nanotubes Commercial adhesives are widely used with the purpose of reinforcing aged/damaged civil structures. However, the existing problem regarding the application of these systems is that at harsh environmental conditions, such as elevated temperatures, and under extended stress, the adhesive loses its functionality. This in turn dramatically reduces the effectiveness of the strengthening systems applied. In Dr Dehghan’s research work, a commercial adhesive was developed with the aid of nanotechnology, with enhanced thermal and mechanical properties. This adhesive offers substantial improvement in the performance of the strengthening systems at ambient temperature and maintains the system performance at elevated environmental temperatures. Dinh Van Tuan Thesis title: Stochastic modelling for energy efficient supercomputing clusters Dr Dinh’s thesis studies mathematical stochastic modelling frameworks to improve the energy efficiency in cluster computing systems, which are facing the challenge of growing energy consumption due to the fast-increased computing demand from phenomenon such as Big Data or the Internet of Things. These frameworks are developed with the reference to the analysis of empirical data collected from real computing systems. This study is a contribution to the engineering effort to make the modern information and communication technology infrastructure more sustainable. Gediminas Gervinskas Thesis title: Sensing platforms: nano-fabrication, characterisation and integration Dr Gervinskas’s research was conducted on a development and optimisation of an optofluidic sensor. In a “constantly shrinking” world, optofluidics combines the advancements, in the fields of optics and microfluidics, into a still evolving area, whose main objectives are element miniaturisation and cost efficiency. A microfluidic platform was developed, to minimize the need of liquid quantities used for analysis on in-the-chip integrated optical sensor. The optical sensor itself was designed and fabricated with the goal to increase the signal detection sensitivity and reduce its footprint by exploiting the novel ideas and nanofabrication techniques in the field of plasmonics. Md Fahad Hasan Thesis title: Microstructures and properties of plasma sprayed and sol-gel modified hydroxyapatite coatings Thermal spray hydroxyapatite coatings have been widely used for bone and hip replacements due to its good biocompatibility and bioactivity and similar properties like bone. But the mechanical properties of the coatings are very weak. As a result, a rigorous mechanical properties analysis has been completed and then thermal spray coatings have been modified by sol-gel coatings to improve the coatings properties for biomedical applications in Dr Hasan’s thesis. 16 Swinburne University of Technology | Graduations Ceremony Program | August 2015 Atul Kamboj Remya Mathew Thesis title: Molecular studies of abiotic stress and abscisic acid mediated stress response pathway in barley Thesis title: Thermal modification of 55% aluminium-zinc-silicon coatings The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is crucial for plant’s adaptive response to salinity and drought stresses. ABA accumulates in plant cells to protect vegetative tissues and regulates developmental events. ABA signalling pathway is well established in Arabidopsis, but is poorly defined in the major cereal crops, wheat and barley. Dr Kamboj’s study identified and characterised barley ABA mediated abiotic stress signalling related genes. It also assessed the salt tolerance levels of sixteen barley varieties by key physiological assays. The study provides insights into genome-wide effects of salinity and drought stresses and is a new resource for the study of gene regulation in barley. Dr Mathew’s work was a collaborative project between Swinburne University, BlueScope Steel and CAST CRC. The main aim of the project work was to investigate the possibility of refining thin aluminum-zinc-silicon coatings by a method called rapid thermal processing. The results showed that ultra-refined coatings can be obtained by processing using high power lasers. It is expected that these refined coatings will improve corrosion resistance of coated steel sheets. The results obtained from this project can be used as a guide for thermal modification of thin coatings on thin steel substrates. Prince Kurumthodathu Surendran Thesis title: Engineering characterisation of construction and demolition materials reinforced with geogrids in pavement applications Thesis title: Bose-Einstein condensation in a magnetic lattice Dr Kurumthodathu Surendran’s thesis reports the realisation of Bose‑Einstein condensation (BEC) of 87Rb F = 1 atoms in multiple sites of a one-dimensional 10m-period magnetic lattice. The magnetic micro traps are created by a perpendicularly magnetised, multi‑layered structure of TbGdFeCo film integrated on to an atom chip, together with uniform bias magnetic fields. Clear signatures for the onset of quantum degeneracy in multiple sites of the magnetic lattice are provided by in-situ site-resolved radio‑frequency spectroscopy. Md Aminur Rahman Dr Rahman’s study describes the utilization of construction and demolition materials reinforced with geogrid in pavement applications. In addition, this research also investigates the shear strength; resilient modulus; permanent deformation and infiltration capacity and pollutants removal efficiencies of construction and demolition materials. Mehdi Soodi Thesis title: An investigation of properties of FGM and wafer structures produced with laser direct metal deposition Le Vu Hoang Thesis title: Generation and application of coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation Dr Le’s thesis presents the generation of coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation through the frequency up-conversion of a visible laser in a gas medium. This source is used to study the structure of the atoms in the gas, as well as to further develop new microscopy imaging techniques. Using the coherent diffractive imaging method with a 30 nanometre light source, an image of the sample can be resolved with a resolution down to 45 nanometres. Muhammad Rakib Mansur Thesis title: Deposition and characterisation of a coating from calcium phosphate and titanium alloy on austenitic stainless steel Composite coatings made of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) and hydroxyapatite (HA) can enhance the corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel used for prosthetic applications. Different techniques have already been adopted to produce pure HA or composite coatings on different substrates for biomedical applications. Dr Mansur’s research yielded deposition of composite coatings and material from HA and Ti-6Al-4V on austenitic stainless steel by using laser‑assisted deposition technique. The study incorporates microstructural, chemical and mechanical characterisation of the developed composite coating. The research also covers temperature and cooling rate determination for the relationship establishment between different microstructural and mechanical parameters with those two. Existing range of metallic alloys and structures possess a series of physical and mechanical properties that deem them useful or unusable in certain applications or environments. A solution to the cases where metallic alloys lack specific properties and therefore cannot function satisfactorily is to develop new innovative materials which possess the desired characteristics. These characteristics may include tailored mechanical, thermal and functional properties. In Dr Soodi’s research Laser Direct Metal Deposition technique was used to create such innovative metallic structures to overcome some limitations of existing alloys. Laser assisted direct metal deposition offers endless opportunities to create innovative structures to further improve material performance and characteristics. The results offer a series of solution as well as pathways for development of further structures. Adam Bennett Taylor Thesis title: The photo thermal reshaping mechanism of gold nanorods, with applications in rod alignment and optical data storage Gold nanorods are an important class of plasmonic nano-materials, with applications in photo thermal cancer treatment, solar power and optical data storage. For these applications, it is extremely important to understand their thermal stability under heating. Dr Taylor’s work provides the first insight into the details of the effect of shape and temperature on thermal stability, to reveal curvature driven surface diffusion as the main cause of reshaping, occurring 800°C below the traditional melting point. These findings were then used to demonstrate nanorod alignment, and many-layer optical data storage, and will have a significant impact on the design future of plasmonic devices. August 2015 23 Tuesday 25 August 2015, 4.00pm Swinburne Research Sherryn Elise Tobin Swinburne has consistently pursued a policy of ensuring quality and critical mass by investing resources in areas of research concentration. Swinburne actively encourages and values its international and industry connections which enrich and enhance the research efforts and careers of our academic staff and students alike. Thesis title: Outcomes of isolated and multiple persistent regulatory problems at age 24 months: follow-up of the Baby Business Randomised Controlled Trial The graduates listed below have each made a valuable contribution to Swinburne and their respective fields of research. Graduates for awards from Swinburne Research will be presented by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Capacity), Professor Min Gu. Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) 503 families reported on their infant’s regulatory problems including crying, sleeping and feeding behaviours across the first two years of life. Dr Tobin’s study found that 46% of infants had one or more persistent regulatory problems, and these problems were associated with poorer child, parent and family functioning. Outcomes were poorer when children had multiple problems. The findings indicate that such problems are common, and it is essential for health practitioners to enquire about infant regulatory problems, as well as parent and family wellbeing, at repeated encounters across the first two years of life. Emma Louise Butler Danielle Cecilia Williamson Thesis title: Mindfulness-based intervention for primary school aged children Thesis title: Analysis of the temporal model of perceived control in response to an imagined traumatic event Dr Butler’s study adapted and piloted a mindfulness-based cognitive therapy program for adults for nine disadvantaged children. A refined mindfulness intervention was then evaluated in a partially randomised controlled trial with 76 children aged between eight and 12 years. Children who underwent the mindfulness intervention showed superior improvements for anxiety, depression, inattention, and low self-esteem compared to a wellbeing program. Improvements to self-esteem were also superior compared to a widely used relaxation treatment. The study supports the utility of mindfulness as a treatment to improve the mental health of disadvantaged children. Dr Williamson’s thesis applied a theory of meaning-making developed in the context of traumatic or stressful life events, the Temporal Model of Perceived Control (TMPC), to a new context – that of an imagined traumatic event. The TMPC proposes that meaning-making has a temporal dimension (it can focus on the past, present or future) and that this orientation is linked to psychological outcomes. The study explored whether these orientations are pre-existing biases and the linkages they have to other psychological characteristics. The results demonstrated that present control was the most robust of the orientations, and that it had significant negative relationships with Ambivalent Attachment Type and Neuroticism, and significant positive relationships with Optimism and Male gender. These findings are applicable to clinical practice in supporting interventions that enhance a present control focus. Shelley Ada Connell Thesis title: An investigation of stressful situations in the workplace: the appraisal of and response to workplace bullying, workplace aggression and similar situations Dr Connell’s research project consisted of five concurrent studies analysing the same set of quantitative and qualitative data gathered from 89 participants about their experiences in the workplace. Important findings included individual differences in the way people defined workplace bullying and in the impacts of stressful situations. Workplace experiences such as bullying could be experienced as traumatic and could also lead to posttraumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth, positive self-transformation arising from a difficult life experience, was found to be linked to a thorough exploration of the impact of the event as well as a positive ending to the story. 24 Swinburne University of Technology | Graduations Ceremony Program | August 2015 Doctor of Philosophy Robert McGregor Bell Wajeehah Aayeshah Thesis title: The Percussive Audio Lexicon: an approach to describing the features of percussion instruments and the sounds they produce Thesis title: Playing with journalism: gaming technology in investigative journalism education Dr Aayeshah explored the contemporary trends in investigative journalism practice and academia. She examined the use of Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) for investigative journalism education. The research involved designing, testing and evaluating an ARG that included real-life investigation by journalism students. The study found ARG to be a useful and efficient educational resource due to its flexibility and authentic learning experience. Ali Mohammad Hadi AL-Asadi Thesis title: Data mining in psychological research: the application of statistical and data mining techniques to the anxiety online platform Dr AL-Asadi’s research applied advanced data mining techniques to the Anxiety Online Platform to investigate pre-treatment-assessment, during-treatment, and post-treatment-assessment attritions and predictors, the efficacy of online therapy, and multiple and structural comorbidities. Results help with developing methods for improving engagement with online interventions, and provide for more efficient assessment. Establishing the efficacy of online intervention and the trans-diagnostic and trans-treatment applications will have a significant impact on online intervention programs. Establishing multiple comorbidities and comorbidity structure of 21 psychological disorders and their relationships with psycho-social variables using online assessment is a new area that will have a significant impact on treatment outcomes. In music, the diversity of percussion instruments and the sounds they make is immense. There are millions of recordings in sound libraries, cataloguing the sounds of thousands of different instruments. Finding ways to effectively describe and label all of them is challenging. Dr Bell’s Percussive Audio Lexicon (PAL) provides a comprehensive and uniform vocabulary of over 2,500 words and phrases, which users and creators of sound libraries can use to label and catalogue percussive sounds and instruments. It can also function as a tool for teaching music students about percussion. It is the only system of its kind in the world. Geoffrey TM Chow Thesis title: Key factors and forces that shaped the baby-boomer generation of ethnic Chinese entrepreneurship in Australia Dr Chow studied and developed a framework aimed at better understanding the baby-boomer generation of ethnic Chinese business entrepreneurship in Australia. The tri-cluster model that emerged from the research has been recognised as a key contribution to academic knowledge for those seeking to understand ethnic Chinese business entrepreneurs in Australia. It is useful and applicable for further relevant research. the tri-cluster model is also a useful tool in practical business dealing with ethnic Chinese business entrepreneurs, particularly in an era where a heavy emphasis is placed on improving business ties with Asian countries. Kirsten Michelle Day Thesis title: Fengshui as a narrative of localisation: case studies of contemporary architecture in Hong Kong and Shanghai Craig John Austin Thesis title: Design thinking: expanding the frame of reference. A study of concepts, ideas and thinking tools developed by Edward de Bono that have potential for application within a design process and design thinking framework Dr Austin’s research focuses on design’s ability to bring imaginable worlds out of non-existence into existence and investigates thinking behaviours referred to as design thinking. Underpinning the research is a biological model for the way the brain functions developed by Edward de Bono and the research question asks: can design thinking be enriched with some of de Bono’s ideas in order to make the thinking and the process more effective and can some of these ideas be diagrammatically represented? An outcome of the project is the development of a graphic visualisation of a four-stage design process and design thinking schema. Chinese fengshui evolved from a classical tradition aimed at achieving harmony within the environment. However, case studies and fieldwork undertaken in Dr Day’s thesis reveal that in contemporary architecture, fengshui is often used as a Chinese localisation device in a significant departure from classical practice. This thesis analyses examples of Chinese cultural identification within transnational architecture in Hong Kong and Shanghai, during the 20th and early 21st centuries. The outcome provides architects and urban designers with a new perspective on the contemporary use of fengshui in China. Swinburne University of Technology | Graduations Ceremony Program | August 2015 25 Tuesday 25 August 2015, 4.00pm Samuel Keith Duncan Dustin Raffaele Halse Thesis title: How the play element has changed in Australian football and the consequences of this change on the community Thesis title: From servants to citizens: a history of Victorian Public Service Unionism, 1885–1946 Dr Duncan’s thesis is a theoretical analysis of the importance of the play element in developing communities and culture, using the Australian Football League (AFL) as a case study. Using the historical observations of Johan Huizinga and combining them with Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of fields and capital, a theoretical framework was created to illuminate the important role of play in creating communities. By developing this theory and applying it to the AFL, the analysis highlighted how the media and economic fields have transformed ‘play’ into ‘display’, which has changed the way AFL supporters relate to the game and subsequently weakened the AFL community. Dr Halse’s project traces the history of Victorian departmental public service unionism from 1885 to 1946. The central argument of this history is that Victorian public service unionists, with the aid of the public service union, challenged the theoretical and practical limitations placed upon their political and industrial citizenship. Public servants have commonly been treated as a residual class in both Marxist and non-Marxist labour history writings. This project therefore fills an obvious lacuna in Australian trade union historiography. Bradley John Elphinstone Thesis title: Investigating cognitive and ontological factors underlying the adherence to normative materialistic values and their influence on wellbeing The results of Dr Elphinstone’s research indicated that people who have a holistic, ‘big picture’ way of looking at the world, in combination with a complex, elaborative thinking style, place less importance on goals and aspirations associated with ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ and are less materialistic. These people are also motivated by meaningful, self-directed reasons rather than striving to impress others, and subsequently report greater self-esteem, self-actualisation, and psychological wellbeing. The application of these findings can have a positive impact on mental health and the environment, through reducing extrinsically-motivated consumption. Judith Elizabeth Glover Thesis title: Taboo to mainstream: an industrial design solution to sex toy production Sex toys are rarely a topic for academic consideration let alone a doctoral thesis. They generally remain hidden and anonymous products poorly conceived and designed made of unsafe materials produced by the pornography industry with outdated views on female sexuality and gender. Yet sexuality and sexual practice is central to human wellbeing. Dr Glover’s thesis challenges the notions of such products as taboo and unworthy of consideration by the design disciplines. This thesis addresses both the technical considerations and socio-sexual behaviour and belief systems that prevent this product genre being considered mainstream product design and provides an exemplar of how design culture, process and methods can align the industry with contemporary female consumers. 26 Russell John Kennedy Thesis title: Designing with indigenous knowledge: policy and protocols for respectful and authentic cross-cultural representation in communication design practice Set within the frame of proposed indigenous recognition in the Australian Constitution, Dr Kennedy’s research asserts the need for informed understanding of how to appropriately represent indigenous culture and to its broader relationship with the Australian national identity. It explores the notion of knowledge sharing and investigates methods to improve the quality of Indigenous graphical representation in communication design practice. The research asks: what are the protocols required for practitioners working on projects involving the visual representation of indigenous knowledge and culture? The findings outline a cognitive strategy based on respectful engagement processes, cultural protocols and Indigenous-led collaboration. Jonathan Albert O’Hara Thesis title: Willingness to engage in relationship problem discussion: predictors and consequences of partner asymmetry Dr O’Hara’s research investigated factors that influence relationship partner’s willingness to engage in relationship problem discussion. Findings revealed that for males, greater belief in their own capability for change was related to less willingness to engage in relationship problem discussion. Conversely, male’s greater belief in their female partner’s capability for change was related to greater willingness to engage in relationship problem discussion. Findings also revealed that increased vulnerability to overwhelming physiological arousal during conflict was related to lower willingness to engage in relationship problem discussion for both male and female partners. Swinburne University of Technology | Graduations Ceremony Program | August 2015 Michaela Celeste Pascoe Thesis title: Molecular mechanisms and nutritional factors influencing post-stroke affective disorders Dr Pascoe’s thesis studied the biological mechanisms underlying stroke-related affective symptomatology, depressive disorder, anxiety and hyperactive delirium. The hypothesis that stroke-associated degeneration of cellular networks is linked to stroke-associated behavioural and affective disorders was explored. The effects of polyunsaturated-fatty-acids and homocysteine, capable of mediating cellular-degeneration, in the aetiology stroke-associated affective symptomatology, were additionally studied. The findings suggest that stroke-induced cell-death is associated with the presentation of depressive, anxious and hyperactive symptomatology, and that nutritional factors which influence the processes of cell-death, may also influence these behavioural outcomes. However, a possible detrimental effect of nutritional supplementation, on risk of bleeding, was identified. Madihah Sheikh Abdul Aziz Thesis title: DACADE: a systematic data collection and analysis tool Dr Madihah’s study investigates a lack of systematic data collection and analysis skills among design students, and attempts to solve the problem of a lack of such knowledge. This was done by designing, developing and evaluating a software tool that uses visual data collection and analysis techniques to help students understand the merits of systematic data collection of consumer performance and opinion, and carry out well-designed user tests to produce successful products. The thesis addresses several theoretical implications concerning the transfer of learning, the appropriateness of graphics used, and user motivation in a learning environment. It also proposed future studies. Svjetlana Vukusic Thesis title: Social and emotional processing in the broader autism phenotype The aim of Dr Vukusic’s thesis was to examine social-emotional processing in typically developing individuals with high and low autistic traits, by using electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography. A subsidiary aim was to gain information about the relation between genetics and socio-emotional processing within autism through examination of first-degree relatives of people with autism. Results showed that people with high autistic traits and also parents and adult siblings of people with autism have some similarities with autism in processing of socio-emotional information. Asanka Nirmalie Gunasekara Swinburne has consistently pursued a policy of ensuring quality and critical mass by investing resources in areas of research concentration. Swinburne actively encourages and values its international and industry connections which enrich and enhance the research efforts and careers of our academic staff and students alike. The graduates listed below have each made a valuable contribution to Swinburne and their respective fields of research. Graduates for awards from Swinburne Research will be presented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development, Professor Aleksandar Subic. Thesis title: Social integration and life and job satisfaction: the case of Sri Lankan and Indian skilled migrants in Australia Dr Gunasekara ‘s research investigated the extent to which Sri Lankan and Indian skilled migrants are socially integrated into Australian society and their level of life and job satisfaction. The survey results suggested that participants are socially integrated and satisfied with their jobs at a moderate level, and highly satisfied with their life in Australia. The results also indicated that social integration influences their level of life and job satisfaction. Findings suggest that there is a need to focus on developing and implementing policies that encourage supportive and inclusive behaviours towards skilled migrants at the societal and organisational level. Shamsun Nahar Thesis title: Risk disclosure practices: their determinants and association with bank performance Doctor of Philosophy Subhash Appanna Thesis title: Public sector reforms in Fiji: a search for appropriate governance structures Dr Appanna’s research aimed to explore and critically examine the reasons why, despite the purported presence of many of New Public Management’s pre-requisites, public sector reforms have had limited success in Fiji. The research found that the New Public Management model has inherent problems that render it of limited use value in a traditional Pacific Island context like Fiji. It proposes that any new (or modified) proposals for governance in the public sector reform process will need to consider the unique characteristics of the Fiji context. Public policy makers, practitioners and scholars should find this research of great value. Christopher Taylor Bilney Thesis title: Public sector cultural change: an auto ethnography of a street level bureaucrat Employing auto ethnography, Dr Bilney’s thesis examines employee reactions to organisational change and how these alter over time. Dr Bilney made use of his long term experience in the public sector to examine his perceptions of and reactions to change, noting that longer term employees perceive and deal with organisational change in different ways to shorter term employees. The thesis refines extant change management models, informs managers of employee perceptions and reactions and assists them to tailor their management of change to suit individuals thus facilitating a smoother and more effective change experience. In an attempt to redress in part the empirical scarcity in risk disclosure studies in developing countries, Dr Nahar’s study is the first to provide knowledge of corporate risk disclosure practices, their determinants and firm performance. The study fills a gap in the literature by providing a comprehensive and longitudinal study of corporate risk disclosure information in banks’ annual reports in Bangladesh. The Risk Disclosure Index, developed in this study, contributes to the literature by quantifying the extent of risk disclosure and identifying the factors determining them. Stakeholders, particularly depositors and investors, can use this Index in selecting their bank of interest. Khayri Omar Thesis title: The public value of Gov 2.0: the case of Victorian local government, Australia Dr. Khayri’s doctoral studies focussed on the creation of public value through the government use of social media platforms (Gov 2.0). He developed a method of evaluating the return on investments by implementing these technologies in the public sector. His findings contribute to clarify the value of investing in these new technologies for both academic and public sector areas. This contribution provides a clear understanding of the value of Gov 2.0, value for whom, by whom and how it is created and evaluated. Janine Fay Pickering Thesis title: Gender dynamics in the management of commercial and public biotechnology organisations Data from 30 Australian biotech organisations reveal no significant difference in pay or responsibilities between male and female managers in the commercial sector. By comparison, academic biotech is characterised by vertical segregation with female managers concentrated in lower level management positions. Dr Pickering’s interviews suggest the organisation of work and career advancement opportunities in commercial biotech are more accommodating of working mothers, an outcome that is primarily productivity-driven. This suggests public biotech organisations seeking to improve gender equity should re-examine how productivity is defined and evaluated, rather than focusing on ‘family friendly’ policies to accommodate women in existing patterns of work.
