CEO Message
Welcome to our first edition for 2014!
I hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas and New Year festivities at Kew Gardens
and Banfields Aged Care and catching up with their loved ones at this special
time of the year. Most of our staff and management have also had the
opportunity to take a breather and come back to work refreshed and ready
for what will definitely be a good year at the Australian Aged Care Group.
The record breaking heat wave we experienced in January has reminded
us all of the power of nature. Thankfully, the air conditioning systems in both
our facilities provided a comfortable environment
for all our residents, visitors and staff throughout the
heat wave. The Department of Social Services has
issued timely Heat Wave guidelines for aged care
providers and we have implemented these in both
our facilities.
I hope you all make the most of what is left
of the warmer weather and enjoy the outings,
walks and alfresco café offered at both Kew
Gardens and Banfields.

A fire at the Domain Seahaven Aged Care home in Inverloch in early January saw Banfields come to
the rescue ensuring affected residents of Seahaven’s dementia ward were transferred safely, quickly
and with a minimal amount of disturbance.
Banfields Aged Care received many accolades afterwards; “It’s brilliant here,” said Roger Lee
who was relieved and thankful that his elderly mother Rachael was safely relocated.
“Everything is wonderful here, from the newness of the facility to the caring and helpful staff.
“Our family is very appreciative of the speed of the whole transfer operation, which was very
well conducted and managed,” he said.
“We are very happy that our mother is being so well looked after – and she is very happy to be
here.” Rachael was one of the thirteen residents who were transferred to Banfields after the call
for help was made.

Charter of Residents’ Rights and Responsibilities
The Commonwealth Government has produced a ‘Charter of Residents’ Rights and Responsibilities’
to ensure residents’ rights are not compromised when you move into residential care. A copy
of the Charter of Residents’ Rights is enclosed in the Residential Care Agreement and displayed
throughout both AACG facilities. It reads, as follows:
A. Each resident of a residential care service has the right:
• to full and effective use of his or her
personal, civil, legal and consumer rights
• to quality care appropriate to his or her needs
• to full information about his or her own state
of health and about available treatments
• to be treated with dignity and respect, and
to live without exploitation, abuse or neglect
• to live without discrimination or
victimisation, and without being obliged
to feel grateful to those providing his
or her care and accommodation
• to personal privacy
• to live in a safe, secure and homelike
environment, and to move freely both
within and outside the residential care
service without undue restriction
• to be treated and accepted as an individual,
and to have his or her individual preferences
taken into account and treated with respect
• to continue his or her cultural and religious
practices, and to keep the language of his
or her choice, without discrimination
• to select and maintain social and personal
relationships with anyone else without fear,
criticism or restriction
• to freedom of speech
• to maintain his or her personal independence
• to accept personal responsibility for his or
her own actions and choices, even though
these may involve an element of risk,
because the resident has the right to
accept the risk and not to have the risk
used as a ground for preventing or
restricting his or her actions and choices
• to maintain control over, and to continue
making decisions about, the personal
aspects or his or her daily life, financial
affairs and possessions
• to be involved in the activities, associations
and friendships of his or her choice, both
within and outside the residential care service
• to have access to services and activities
available generally in the community
• to be consulted on, and to choose to have
input into, decisions about the living
arrangements of the residential care service
• to have access to information about his
or her rights, care, accommodation and
any other information that relates to the
resident personally
• to complain and to take action
to resolve disputes
• to have access to advocates and other
avenues of redress
• to be free from reprisal, or a well-founded
fear of reprisal, in any form for taking
action to enforce his or her rights.
B. Each resident of a residential care service has the responsibility:
• to respect the rights and needs of other
people within the residential care service,
and to respect the needs of the residential
care service community as a whole
•
to respect the rights of staff and the
proprietor to work in an environment
free from harassment
• to care for his or her own health and
well-being, as far as he or she is capable
• to inform his or her medical practitioner,
as far as he or she is able, about his or her
relevant medical history and current state
of health.

It’s hugely anticipated every year and this New Year’s Eve was no exception! Everyone had a fun evening
saying good bye to 2013 and staff shared the special moment of seeing in the new year with residents.

Elvis’ 84th Birthday
Sue Keeble literally dressed the part and our
props made the day. Residents sang along
with Sue to Elvis’ famous songs, while staff
danced! Everyone enjoyed the banana and
peanut paste sandwiches and shots of coke
– no wonder Elvis died early though, as they
were too delicious and once you tasted one
you needed to have many more!
Foot Pampering
When we announce to residents that foot pampering is on, they line up in droves. It’s a favourite
session and enjoyed by everyone who participates . . . even the gentlemen!

Australia Day
We celebrated our national holiday listening to some old time music with
Glen Miller and others on the record player. The BBQ outside had to be
abandoned because of the extreme heat, but residents could still delight
in traditional aussie ‘delicacies’ that included snags, steak and rissoles with
the good ol’ pavlova for dessert. Other features of the day were a ‘Thong
throwing’ competition, as well as a dance. Residents had a great day and
greeted each other with the obligatory, ‘G’day mate!’.

Chinese New Year
We celebrated Chinese New Year on Friday, 31 January; residents
enjoyed seeing a ‘smaller’ Dragon who visited Cowes from the main
parade in Melbourne.

Banfields Open Day
The second Open Day at Banfields was held on
Saturday, 29 March with many interested locals
and not-so-local locals coming along to admire
our beautiful facility. It was encouraging to see
that our growing reputation had reached those
ageing in nearby country towns throughout the
South Gippsland region.
Many visitors, especially those having just heard
about us, expressed their gratitude that such an
impressive facility was now available to them.
They found comfort in the fact that premium
aged care was close at hand, as their beloved
relatives or they themselves aged.
We were delighted with the overall response
and thank our dedicated team, as well as the
volunteers who made the day such a success.
We’d also like to thank the ‘talent’ who
performed throughout the day entertaining
visitors with their wonderful music.

Care and Well-being
2014 has been a year of growth for Banfields
and we hope to continue our steady flow
of admissions of residents into our home. We
currently have four of the six wings in Banfields
operational, with more residents booked to move
into our home in coming months. As most
residents and families are aware, we have had
14 residents from Seahaven aged care move to
Banfields, in early January 2014. The residents
in the Kangaroo wing from Seahaven will stay
at Banfields until their facility rebuilds the section
affected by the fire. It looks like Banfields will
house these residents for the next few months.
If you have any enquiries about your care or
if you would like to speak to one of Banfields
many experienced Nurses, please contact Anne
Drennan. Anne works Monday to Friday from
8am to 4pm. Anne is Banfields Clinical Care
Manager and contacts families/NOK/resident/
relative and/or representatives about any
changes in care needs. Anne will also be
contacting all residents at Banfields next of kin,
every 6 months to go through each individual
resident's care plan.
At Banfields, we also encourage all families and
friends to come and enjoy a meal with your
loved ones. If you wish to do this, please order
your meal at reception. Lunch is served at 12pm,
so please ensure you place your order no later
than 11am. Dinner is served at 5pm, so please
ensure you place your order with reception no
later than 4pm. If you would like to ring ahead
and pre-order your meal, please call reception
on (03) 5951 2500.
REMINDER: Please ensure you are filling in
'A moment for your thoughts' Form, for any
suggestions, comments, complaints and ideas
you have for Banfields. These forms are located
in the Nurses Stations or at the front of reception
if you wish to fill one in. If you require assistance
to complete the form, please see one of our
helpful staff members who can assist you.
REMINDER: All clothing coming into Banfields
needs to be labelled by the Banfields laundry

Welcome everyone to the Quality Matters
feedback section of the Residents’ Newsletter.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce
myself; my name is Marjorie Armstrong, and
mid-November, 2013 I was employed as
Australian Aged Care Group’s Quality and
Compliance Manager for both Kew Gardens
and Banfields Aged Care facilities.
The most recent events at both Kew Gardens
and Banfields Aged Care facilities have meant
it has been extremely busy however, successful,
with excellent achievements at the end of 2013.
I am pleased to inform that we continue to meet
all the requirements set by the Aged Care
Standards and Accreditation Agency Ltd.,
following a Support Site Audit on 23rd November,
2013 at Kew Gardens and Accreditation Site
Audit on the 17th and 18th December, 2013
at Banfields Aged Care.
Improvement ideas and suggestions eventuate
from ‘A Moment for Your Thought’ forms
received from residents and relatives and
‘Continuous Improvement’ forms received from
staff, our own internal audits and surveys, and
we encourage everyone to participate through
this medium. The aim is to provide the highest
quality of care and lifestyle services, delivered
in a tasteful environment and tailored to the
needs of the individual resident. We, at
Australian Aged Care Group, pride ourselves
on not only providing quality of care, but also
on offering a positive approach in assisting
residents to maintain a quality of life.
We thank all our residents and their families
for giving us the opportunity to care for them
and for the trust they have placed in all
of us at Kew Gardens and Banfields. Together,
we will continue to improve in all aspects
of accreditation, quality and compliance.
