A Countryside Directory
West Yorkshire Countryside Directory for people with disabilities first edition Whatever your needs, access to and enjoyment of the countryside is rewarding, healthy and great fun. This directory can help you find out what opportunities are available to you in your area. Get yourself outdoors and enjoy all the benefits that come with it… Car park and picnic site at Scammonden Water, Huddersfield Picture courtesy of Geoff Lomas, Yorkshire Water. Open Country This directory was designed for people with a disability, though the information included will be useful to everyone. West Yorkshire has a diversity of landscape and culture that is unsurpassed in England. It is hardly surprising then, that the local countryside has so much to offer to so many people. It is more than worth taking that first step and getting yourself involved, regardless of your abilities. For people interested in wildlife and conservation there is much that can be done from home or a local accessible area. Whatever your chosen form of countryside recreation, whether it’s joining a group, doing voluntary work, or getting yourself out into the countryside on your own, we hope you will get as much out of it as we do. There is still some way to go before we have a properly accessible countryside. By contacting Open Country or another of the organisations listed here, we help to encourage better access for all in the future. If you would like this Directory to be sent to you in Braille or on audio cassette, please contact Sam or David at Open Country on 01423 507227. Published in December 2004 Using the Directory Throughout the Directory you may see some symbols. These are to help you see what kind of facilities or information is available. Please also contact individual places or contact to ask what they can offer people with disabilities. We thank them for supporting our project and enabling us to share this information with others, so that many more people can enjoy the great outdoors as much as we do. Thanks also go to Paperworks for binding the Directory and the RNIB for transferring the Directory to BRAILLE and audio cassette. Open Country Open Country was set up in 1990 to enable anyone with any disability to access and enjoy the countryside. Sam and David are the only two members of staff. Both have joined the project from a countryside background of work and personal interest. This Directory is just one of the ways that we try to let people know about what is available to them and how they can get involved. We hope you use this Directory to get more involved with the countryside and enjoy all the benefits and fun that comes with it. Can you help us? As a small voluntary organisation, we are heavily dependent on the generosity of our supporters. Any donation, no matter how small, will help us to continue our valuable work. Thank you.
