LOVE BIGGER THAN TEXAS
We wanted to share with you parts of a very special letter we received from the adult
daughter of Ron G. who had one of our Hearing Dogs, Billy Bud, for 13 years. She tells,
first hand, how Billy Bud impacted their entire family. Often, we don’t think about the
years of service and the long-term impact these dogs have on the lives of the people
they help and on their entire families. Ron is now on the waiting list, and we will be placing another dog with him as soon as we have the right dog ready for him.
“I’m sure that you’ve heard that a wonderful Hearing Dog, Billy Bud, has passed away. He
was the ears of my father for 13 years. To not pay tribute to this fantastic dog would be a
great wrong. Billy leaves our family and friends mourning his unfortunate death.
Everyone who met Billy loved him. My father used to brag that he could take Billy anywhere, and he would be better behaved than most children. He had many fans on the
long road between Texas and Washington, the two places he lived. As my father’s dog,
he made this 2200 mile journey twice a year for 13 years in a row, working with my dad
all the way.
Billy was a courageous dog, even saving my mother when she fell in the gravel outside
of their Washington home. Billy heard my mother cry out even though he was next door
with my dad visiting with the neighbor. Billy alerted Dad and danced around until my
dad asked Billy what was wrong.
Billy led him to my mom lying on the
ground in pain from having fallen
so hard. She was unable to get up
on her own. Billy was a Hearing Dog by
Billy Bud
trade, but a true family friend by life. He was
as lucky to have my dad and mom as they were to have him. They took
good care of each other for the 13 years they had together.
It was only as recently as last year that Billy’s health began to irreparably fail, and the roles that had long been established were reversed as
my dad became Billy’s aid. My parents cared for Billy, and he could not
have found a better home anywhere. There never was a dog as loved
as Billy, and his passing has left a hole bigger than Texas in our hearts.
You trained a wonderful dog, and he was part of our family to the end.
You will never know how much having Billy helped my dad. We will miss
him more than words can ever tell. My father is so lost without Billy.
“Part of our family...”

Placement Highlights
ZEVA - the Handy Helper
Zeva, a two year old, female, fawn colored Corgi mix with a black mask, came to us from the
Post Falls animal shelter in Idaho. They are a very small shelter and can only keep dogs for
a few days. Dogs who aren’t reclaimed or adopted are euthanized. Zeva was scheduled for
euthanasia the day before we went to the shelter, but the person who does the euthanasia was
out sick that day, and the dogs were given one more day (luckily for us and Zeva). Needless
to say, the shelter staff was very happy when we took Zeva. She tested well and proved to
be very intelligent and friendly. Initially, we thought she would be able to complete the Hearing
Dog training, but she did not like going into public places, so we moved her to the Miracle Mutt
program. With her great personality, intelligence, and love of life, we knew she’d make a great
Miracle Mutt for someone with special needs.
Zeva was matched with Candee C. who has numbness in her hands and arthritis in her hips
and back. All of this is very painful. In addition, she struggles with depression from the pain and
from the loss of her mother-in-law and father and, most recently, her dog. She needed another
Zeva
dog to help her deal with all of this, and Zeva was the answer. We trained Zeva to “fetch” in a
special way so that if the numbness in Candee’s hands caused her to drop the ball or other items, Zeva would pick it
up and give it back to Candee. We also taught Zeva the name call so if Candee needed her husband she could call his
name and Zeva would go get him and bring him to help her. Zeva thought this was great fun, and Candee knew it would
make her feel more secure and safe if she were in trouble and needed her husband to come and help her.
In addition, the doctors have told Candee she needs to walk and exercise more to help the arthritis, and Zeva is very
willing to help motivate Candee to go for lots of walks.
Candee and Zeva are off to a great start and developing into a real team.
JIGSAW - Solves the Sound Puzzle
We found Jigsaw, a 1 ½ year old black and grey, male, Terrier mix, at the Central
CA SPCA in Fresno. He had been living outside, was very underweight, and was
brought in by his owner who could no longer afford to keep him. He was a pretty
pathetic sight, but he passed our initial evaluation with flying colors and gave our
trainer every indication that he was ready for a new life and an important job.
Jigsaw went through the normal medical evaluation and tests when he arrived at
DFD, and, with good food and good care, his weight and health improved. Then his
training began. He learned how to alert his trainer to various household sounds. It
was fun to alert his trainer and run to the source of the sound and then get either a
treat or toy. Life was good! Jigsaw also learned the normal obedience skills so that
he would be well behaved, both in the house and when they went out.
When Jigsaw was almost through training, his trainer looked through the applicants on our waiting list to find the best match for him - the place where his perJigsaw
sonality and strengths would be best utilized. Mary Lou R., California, was the right
person for Jigsaw. Mary Lou is a widow who lives alone. She is retired and has been
losing her hearing since her late 40’s. She was at the point where she knew she was missing many sounds and needed
assistance to know what was going on around her. When Jigsaw and his trainer arrived at Mary Lou’s home, she was so
excited and said that she loved him the minute she saw him. After going over some paperwork, discussing what would happen during the placement week, and letting Jigsaw check out his new home, the placement work began. First they showed
Mary Lou what Jigsaw was trained to do, and then began transferring Jigsaw’s focus and attention to Mary Lou so that he
would begin alerting her and taking her to the sounds. This involved a lot of practice until Jigsaw understood that Mary Lou
was his new partner and the one he was there to help. Soon Jigsaw was alerting Mary Lou and taking her to the door knock,
telephone, alarm clock, oven timer, and someone calling her name. She was thrilled, knowing that now she would not be
missing these important sounds anymore.
ROSIE - a Helpful Friend
Summer 2011 • Canine Listener • Page 3
Fourteen year old Chris Y. has post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.
When his old dog died, Chris was totally devastated, and his adoptive parents
knew he needed a special friend to help him with the loss and with his emotional
challenges. They sent in an application, and we were fortunate to be able to
place a dog with this special young man relatively quickly. Rosie, a mellow, loving Golden Retriever needed a home where she was the only dog and where she
could help someone in need. This was the right place for Rosie.
Upon arriving with her trainer, Rosie proceeded to make herself right at home.
She took to Chris right away and loved snuggling with him. The whole family
thought she was beautiful. The trainer began working with Chris and Rosie,
training him how to have Rosie follow his commands. The smile on his face
showed that Rosie was already beginning to help Chris. As this twosome grows
up together, we expect to hear of their adventures and how Rosie is helping
Chris work through his emotional challenges.
Petey, a six year old, male Coton de Tulear, came to us
from a private party. Petey’s owner loved him dearly but
could no longer keep him. She works very long hours,
and her husband is disabled and couldn’t take care of
Petey’s needs. Neither of them was able to care for him,
and she desperately wanted to find a suitable home for
Petey. When our trainer evaluated Petey, she found him
to be very sweet and loving, with the perfect disposition
and temperament to be a Miracle Mutt. Dogs that are a
little bit older are often times the perfect match
for people with special needs because they are
not as bouncy as younger dogs.
My Assistant
PETEY
After further evaluation and a medical examination,
Petey began training and learned his skills well. He was matched with Kathy B. Kathy has mobility problems due to knee
replacements, plus she lives alone and is very lonely. She needed a loving companion to provide motivation to strengthen
her joints and muscles and also give her something positive to improve her overall health. Petey was just what the doctor
ordered.
Kathy could hardly wait for Petey’s training to be completed and for him to arrive. She had everything ready and waiting for
him. After getting acquainted and letting him get accustomed to his new home and nice big yard, she and Petey and the
trainer began practicing with him to show Kathy what had been trained to do. This way, Petey learned who his new partner
was and who he was working for. Kathy was so excited at the difference that Petey was making in her life so quickly. She
hugged him and thanked the trainer for bringing such a wonderful little dog into her life. She said she’s been so lonely since
her mother died, and now she won’t be lonely anymore. Petey is just what she was hoping for, and the motivation he is
providing is already helping Kathy strengthen her joints and muscles and gain better health.

FINLEY = Peace of Mind
Kimberly W., New Jersey, was born with severe hearing loss. Then
she lost more hearing due to a virus. With a husband, three active children, and a part time job as a teacher, Kimberly knew she
needed help with sound awareness, and she applied for a Hearing
Dog. We placed her first dog Rico with her in 1997, and he helped
her until 2010. After Rico’s passing, Kimberly wanted another Hearing Dog to help her with her family and her work. She quickly realized how much independence Rico had provided for her. Her whole
family also really missed having Rico around.
The right dog for this busy family was Finley, a two year old, male,
tri-colored Sheltie mix. Finley had been at the Tehama County
Animal Shelter as a stray for a month. For some reason everyone
passed him by until one of our trainers saw him and evaluated
him. He was sweet, friendly, and loved life. He went through the
normal medical evaluations and was soon ready for training. He
learned how to respond to the various household sounds - oven
timer, door knock/bell, name call, telephone, and smoke alarm. He
also learned obedience skills, and six months later he was ready
Finley
to meet his new family in his forever home.
When the trainer arrived at Kimberly’s home, the children were concerned with how bonded Finley was to the trainer. After all, he had been with her for six months, but by the second day of the
placement, Finley was following Kimberly around more and more and being attentive to her needs. By the third day, Finley
absolutely knew this was where he belonged - this was home. As Finley alerted Kimberly to the sounds perfectly and with
great confidence, the whole family realized this was going to be another great partnership. They all were amazed at how
smart Finley was and how much love he had to give. Rico will always be missed, but Finley has quickly become an important
part of this family, providing Kimberly with sound awareness and the whole family with peace of mind.

Dog Walk 2011 - A Roaring Twenties Success!
Our 20th Annual Dog Walk on June 4 in Medford, Oregon, attracted hundreds of walkers and their furry
family members. Since this was the 20th Annual Dog Walk, the theme was “The Roaring Twenties.”Judi
Austin and Larry Neal from country radio station KRWQ were our Grand Marshalls, and perfect weather
greeted dogs and walkers from Oregon, Washington, Florida, and Illinois.
In addition to the walk, activities included: agility course demonstrations and coaching sessions by Rogue Canine Agility,
Weenie Dog Races, a Kids’ Zone by Western States Insurance, hoop shoot by Jacksonville Lions Club, Meet the Breeds
with the Rogue Valley Kennel Club, ice cream courtesy of Umpqua Dairy, micro-chipping and a seminar on “First Aid for
Your Pet” by Dr. Rob Landon of Mountain View Veterinary Clinic, photo booth, and Jacksonville Veterinary Clinic answering canine medical questions. After the walk, everyone was treated to a hot dog lunch courtesy of the State of Jefferson
Antique Car Club, Fred Meyer, Safeway, Costco, Ray’s Market, and Coca Cola.
This year’s costume contest was EXTRA creative! The first prize winners came all the way from Washington and their
group, people and dogs, were all dressed in Zoot Suits and Flapper Dresses.
To end the day, we had a lot of lucky raffle and silent auction prize winners who went home with fabulous prizes. Thanks
to all who participated - it was a very fun and successful day, raising nearly $40,000 for DFD! Special thanks to all of our
corporate sponsors and donors for making this event possible.

“Ears to You”
Letters from recipients of our special DFD dogs
Dear DFD,
I’m in recovery from knee replacement now. If the
physical therapist gets a little too demanding, Harley
figures out a way up on the table between the therapist and me and just stares at her. He helps, not only
with sounds, but with so much else.
Nancy O. and Harley, Arizona
DFD trainer Emily recently contacted one of our
recipients to see how she was doing after having
surgery. Dorothy is the partner of Hearing Dog
Mel, and they live in New York. Dorothy had only
been home from the hospital for a week when
Emily called. After telling Emily that she was doing pretty well, Dorothy said, “Mel has done a lot
to keep me going.” Dorothy will turn 90 this summer and is greatly benefitting from Mel’s help and
companionship.
My wonderful Shasta has passed on,
and I miss her so. Thank you for letting Shasta spend the eight years we
had together with me. She will always
be remembered as such a sweet, well
behaved dog. You did that, and I am
thankful to all of you. She always had
a smile on her face, but when I put her
orange vest on, she was all business.
She took being the best Hearing Dog
very seriously. Shasta was my life, and
I truly love her.
Patricia P., Oregon
Jude is really helping me with her sound
work. I’m much more relaxed these days
having her around than I’ve been in the
last several years. It’s noticeable.
We did a presentation this week for hearing people. Jude was the star! I was
showing the DFD video, and when the
oven buzzer sounded in the video, she
nudged me and tried to take me to it. It
was pretty cute! The presentation went
well and we had a great time doing it!
Thanks for Jude - she is a great help and
friend.
Scrappy is my lifeline, and I love him
dearly. He doesn’t let me out of his
sight. He is truly a God send.

Dear Emily and DFD,
We are so happy to have Rosie in our lives. She is sweet, energetic and mellow
- except at meal time. Wow, can she dance when it’s time to eat. Chris is truly enjoying her and is helping out with her care as well. She is proving to be a big help
to him. Thanks for all the efforts in getting her to us.

Scooter is my boy! We continue to grow closer, trust
more, and are becoming a
true team. He makes me
laugh with his playfulness. He is very sweet.
He is great at alerting
me to sounds, too.

Hi Robin,
I always viewed Fanci as a gift from God, mostly because I really believe deep down that Fanci is one of
God’s Angels in disguise. We call Fanci the “Us Dog.”
We do almost everything together as a two people/
one dog team, and she is with Patricia and me almost
98% of the time. The other 2% is spent one-on-one
with either Patricia or me. Fanci helps me and works
for me, but she loves us both.

Hi Robin,
Since my dad’s diagnosis of
acute leukemia two months
ago, I’ve been spending more
time with my parents. They
seem to enjoy having Cherelle around when we visit.
Mom brought out an old bedspread just so Cherelle could
lie on the couch! It is touching
to see how my parents are
bonding with her. Cherelle
works sounds for me at my
parents’ house, too. When
Mom cooks, Cherelle lets
me know when the kitchen
timer has gone off. One time after Dad woke from
a nap, he sat up suddenly in his recliner which evidently
made a noise. Cherelle ran into the living room to check
on him. Her presence seems to help take their minds off of
Dad’s illness for a bit. Cherelle has gone with me to one of
Dad’s transfusion appointments. He later told me that the
staff at the transfusion center told him that they were very
impressed with Cherelle and enjoyed having her there.
I hand out my DFD Ambassador business cards whenever
anyone expresses an interest in or curiosity about Cherelle.
I encourage them to check out your wonderful website to
learn even more about Dogs for the Deaf.
I feel so very lucky and blessed to have her in my life. Not
only does she continue to make an important contribution to
my life, but now she is making a contribution to my parents’
life as well.
Hugs to Everyone at DFD,
Karen B. and Cherelle, Oregon
You Can Help Secure the Future of DFD...
Our Endowment Fund is a special and separate fund set up to
ensure the financial stability of DFD for many generations to
come. Money designated to the Endowment Fund is invested
wisely, according to carefully developed guidelines. The principal remains invested in the Endowment Fund, and the interest earned is used for the general operating expenses of the
organization.
Our Finance Committee has established the goal over the next
few years for the Endowment Fund to grow to the level where
the interest from the investments will cover the necessary administrative and fundraising costs for Dogs for the Deaf annually.
When this goal is reached, then all regular donations will be
able to be used directly for the hands-on work with the dogs’
training, placement, and follow-up.
In order to achieve this goal, we need your support. In addition
to your normal, generous donations to the work of DFD, we
hope you will be able to send in a special donation to the Endowment Fund. You will be enhancing the financial stability of
DFD, and you will know that your donations will help people and
dogs for many years to come. Please be sure to indicate that
these special donations are for the Endowment Fund.

Behind the Kennel Door...
a Harmony’s Hound Success Story
By Beth Hay, Client Services Coordinator
What is a Harmony’s Hound? Harmony was a dog who, part way through
her training, we found had a serious medical condition. We treated her and
then kept her until we found someone who would adopt her into their home
and heart and provide the medical care she needed. Thus, Harmony’s
Hounds are dogs who have a special physical or emotional need
of their own and are in need of special care.
No shelter dog comes with a guarantee to be completely sound and healthy. There are
many hidden medical conditions that prevent the dogs from being Assistance Dogs.
With dogs in the Harmony’s Hounds program, our DFD trainers and staff fully evaluate
the dogs’ abilities, personality, and special needs. Then we look for a home and family
that will be able to willingly meet those special needs, fully disclosing everything we
know about the dog and helping them figure out how to provide the best possible care.
This is one of the many reasons that the “matchmaking” process here at DFD between
dogs and people is so successful.
Winston
WINSTON’S STORY
To look at Winston, you wouldn’t know he had a medical condition. Yet, during his medical examination, we found he had
elbow dysplasia. This, of course, prevented him from becoming an Assistance Dog. Winston is a typical young Lab - very
playful and friendly, but his playfulness has to be monitored carefully because of the elbow dysplasia. He is 80 pounds of
loving Yellow Lab and was here at DFD for almost 11 months until we found the right home for him. After careful screening,
we found a home for Winston with an active, loving family. They make sure his special needs are met. Winston will need
to continue to be on a controlled diet and a managed exercise program for his whole life. His placement occurred right as this issue of the “Canine Listener” was going to press so you will read more about Winston in
the Placement Highlights section of our fall issue.
UPDATE: Brody appeared in the last issue of the Canine Listener’s “Behind the Kennel Door” article.
He’s still looking for his forever home. Brody is 11 years old and in good health.
He needs a home with no children where he is the only dog.

New Holiday Cards
A
gain this year, we are offering our popular, beautiful holiday
cards. This year’s design is an elegant card with a photo of
DFD Hearing Dog Finley on a background of holiday green.
Our logo and the words “Season’s Greetings” are printed in a festive
font. The message inside (see below) is in the same holiday green
as the photo background.
These beautiful cards will let those hard-to-buy-for friends, relatives,
and business associates know that you have remembered them
with a gift in their name to help the special work of DFD.
Please, we ask a minimum donation of $15.00 per card. Just mail us the
check, indicate the number of cards you want, and we will send them to you.
An additional BONUS this year! We have a limited supply of Holiday Cards
from previous years. For orders of 10 cards or more, we will send you TWO
ADDITIONAL HOLIDAY CARDS from our previous years’ collection, while
supplies last.
In order to assure delivery prior to Christmas, we must receive your order
by no later than December 16. We cannot provide priority or overnight mail
unless you include the extra postage costs.
You may also call, write, e-mail, or fax and use your VISA, Master Card,
Discover, or American Express.
In celebration of the Holiday Season,
a gift has been made in your name to
Dogs for the Deaf.
This gift will help rescue dogs and
professionally train them to assist and
enhance the lives of people
who are deaf or hard of hearing,
have autism, or have other challenges.
To Dogs for the Deaf,
Your organization is to be commended for not using funds received
to send out various items to solicit donations. How many address labels, calendars, etc. can one use? Apparently those in charge at DFD recognize
this waste. Also, I must say, I do appreciate receiving your newsletter regularly. I read it all and enjoy the articles. Thank you for all you are doing.
Phyllis L., New Jersey
Dear Emily,
I have been very impressed with the process that you have in place for your
dogs. Although I have worked with dogs and rescue programs for many years,
rarely have I seen such a well thought out and executed placement process.
Congratulations!!! I am more than happy to help with any dog issues with
Rosie and contact you so that I use the same training methods you used on
Rosie. It makes it so much easier for the dog if there is some consistency.
Darlene G., Washington
Rosie & Chris
(Editor’s note: All of our dogs receive obedience training during their time in training
at DFD. When each dog is placed, we match the recipient with a dog trainer in their
local area and have the new team participate in obedience classes. This reinforces
the training the dog received from us, and it also helps the recipient and dog bond
and work together. Darlene is the trainer who is helping Chris and Rosie develop their
working relationship.)

There are so many creative and fun ways to raise funds to donate to DFD.
These ideas not only help DFD, but they can also help children learn
to serve others and they can help recycle items you no longer need.
Also, don’t forget the possibility of your employer having matching gift
programs that will double your donations. Have fun with your family or
group, and you will be helping DFD rescue, train, and place more dogs
with more people.

Dear Robin,
Due to failing health, I was unable to attend Dog Walk. I can’t drive,
so I tried to walk as much as possible to collect donations. Actually I
covered more territory than I thought possible. The biggest problem is
the economic issue. I contacted businesses, friends and neighbors. I
am sorry I couldn’t do better. I care a great deal for your wonderful organization and the work you do for all those in need of your help, both
humans and animals. Please know you and everyone at Dogs for the
Deaf are in my prayers daily. Thank you for all the love and compassion
you have. May God richly bless you.

Dear DFD,
My classroom saved pop tabs all school

four recycling tubs and weighed in at 192
pounds! We are happy to donate $164.00
to DFD which includes a generous donation from our recycler. Thank you for all
the wonderful work you do with dogs to improve the lives of adults and children.

Thank You, CFC
We want to extend a very sincere thank you to all Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) donors who have supported DFD
in the past year. The CFC is an annual fundraising drive held by federal employees and military personnel each year to help
charities. These government employees decide which charity/charities they want their donations to go to, and then the donations are done through payroll deduction. For the year 2010, CFC donations totalled over $106,000.00.
CFC members have generously supported the work of DFD, and we greatly appreciate their willingness to help. We are
listed in the “Animal Charities of America” section, #10969.

Dear People,
Please add my two nieces to your mailing list; they
are dog people, too, and I feel their connection to
DFD could be beneficial to everyone. What you do
is more wonderful than words can express, and
reading all the wonderful stories and letters is practically more than my heart can take! I wish I were

Enclosed is a check for an order/donation. I’m living with an elderly parent at
her temporary residence. Unfortunately, we lost our

Imagine...
• a deaf person not knowing when a family
member is in trouble and calling for help.
• a child with autism bolting and running into a
busy street
• someone (child or adult) who has been
abused being interviewed by investigators or
court room advocates
• a special needs teacher with a room of children with disabilities
and challenges
• a veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder
• someone who has had a stroke or serious injury and needs to
endure painful rehabilitation
• someone with depression not wanting to live anymore
These are all real life situations that happen countless times every
day. They involve frustration, pain, danger, and sometimes even loss
of life.
Dogs for the Deaf now trains more than Hearing Dogs. We also train
dogs for children with autism, professionals who work with people
with disabilities, and people with depression, panic/anxiety attacks,
post-traumatic stress disorder, stroke, etc.
At DFD, our work and mission are to help alleviate these dangers
and frustrations by placing professionally trained dogs with people with various disabilities and challenges. The dogs are rescued from shelters, specially trained, and placed with applicants all across
the U.S. free of charge.

Why be a Guardian Angel?
Choosing to be a Guardian Angel for Dogs for the Deaf became a reality to me after being
a recipient of one of their rescued and professionally trained Hearing Dogs for almost
14 years. I am so moved by all the training that went into my once-stray dog. In turn
he gave me unconditional love, companionship, devotion, and a big helping paw by
alerting me to sounds I cannot hear on my own. I miss him dearly. He was MY
Guardian Angel.
Bonnie H., Oregon
After volunteering for a few years, we found DFD to have an excellent “dollars to cause”
ratio so we chose to become DFD Guardian Angels. Then, when we revised our wills, we
included DFD as a beneficiary. We knew that any money left to DFD would be well managed,
and we would be providing a wonderful future for otherwise expendable dogs while helping people with disabilities
at the same time. We have enjoyed volunteering at DFD and are pleased with the growth since we started in 1998.
David and Lois R., Oregon
Here is what your
contribution will provide...
$100 Initial vaccinations
$300 Rescuing a dog from a shelter
$500 Evaluation and tests plus
spaying/neutering
$1000 Initial testing of the dog for alertness and aptitude for training
$1,500 Taking a dog through the quarantine/
evaluation period in preparation for training
$2,000 Follow-up visits of five teams
$3,000 Costs for placement week, going to applicant’s home with the dog,
training the applicant, and transferring
the dog to the person
$5,000 You or your group being named as
the sponsor of a dog at the time of
placement.
Dogs are placed FREE of charge with applicants
nationwide and in Canada. The total cost of operating DFD comes from contributions from individuals,
service clubs, businesses, foundations, memorials,
and bequests. DFD is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization approved by the IRS. Donations are tax
deductible according to current laws.
NO TAX DOLLARS support this program.
Your bequest to DFD can do it all - rescue dogs, serve people
with disabilities, and stretch your dollars to the max - making a huge difference. I love the fact that the leadership of
DFD is so impeccably accountable and responsible in every
way. My deep love of dogs coupled with my life-long desire
to help others in a meaningful, lasting way prompted me to
become a DFD Guardian Angel. I am extremely interested in
the new and expanded programs at DFD that save more dogs
and help more people. Their planning is meticulous, and they
demonstrate true warmth and love for both dogs and people.

DFD Wins with Chase
Dogs for the Deaf was nominated to compete in Round 1
of the CHASE Community Giving Spring 2011 program.
CHASE Community Giving is a program that allows Facebook users to vote for charities that matter most to them. By participating, users help CHASE direct corporate
philanthropic dollars to eligible organizations. CHASE Community Giving began in 2009, aiming to inspire a
new way of corporate giving. CHASE wanted to give the community the opportunity to decide which charities
should share in a portion of its annual philanthropy funds.
The Facebook community has spoken!
Thanks to overwhelming support by Facebook fans worldwide, DFD ended Round 1 in 13th place amongst
competing charities from all across the United States. This made us eligible to receive a $25,000.00 grant from
CHASE, along with the rest of the top 100 U.S. charities from Round 1.
Next, it was on to Round 2.
In Round 2, we were asked to share our "Big Idea" with the Facebook community about how our organization
would use the grant to further our mission. DFD submitted our "Big Idea," along with a video and photos showing some of our special dogs and the people that they help.
Once again, Facebook fans worldwide stepped up to the challenge. DFD placed 19th out of the top 100 nonprofit organizations from Round 1, receiving 6,384 votes, which earned DFD another $20,000.00 grant from
Chase.
Just think how many more dogs we can rescue and people we can help with these grant funds! YOU helped
us to accomplish this with a click of a mouse - by voting, by e-mailing your friends, and by sharing the contest
information on your Facebook page or in your Twitter feed. With those simple actions YOU made a HUGE difference in the lives of dogs and the people they will help.
Thank you, and thank you CHASE Community Giving!

Watch for DFD in Print and on TV
DFD does not pay for any advertising, but we
do have print and video public service ads that
are run in various publications and on various
television stations around the country.
We prepare these ads and send them out once a year, hoping that some of the magazines and TV stations will need
to fill a spot or will be interested in our mission and want to
help by running our ad.
If you see one of our ads, either on TV or in a
magazine, we would appreciate it if you would let
us know. Either clip the print ad and send it to us,
making sure we know what publication it was in
and the date, if possible, or let us know the city, channel, and
approximate time you saw the ad on TV. This will help us
greatly and enable us to thank them so that hopefully they
will run our ads more often.

O bituaries
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of any of the dogs we rescue, train, and place. These
wonderful friends have provided many years of faithful service and love, and they will be fondly remembered by those who loved them. They also received a wonderful, loving life in return.
• SABRE served as the faithful Hearing Dog of Nikki S. for 12 years.
• SHASTA was placed with Patricia P. in 2003 and provided sound awareness and companionship for 8 years.
• GAUGE was with Lisa H. for a little over 11 years and alerted her to sounds and provided companionship and increased independence.
• BILLY BUD was the faithful Hearing Dog of Ron G. for 13 years. (see cover story)
• MUFFIN was the Career Change Dog and best friend of Bill and Lou B. for six years.
It is also very sad to lose those on the human side of the teams we place.
• MARION PAUL passed away recently at the age of 103. She had three of our Hearing Dogs
over the years - Smoky, Summer, and Flossie. Marion was alert and active and always had
the most incredible sense of humor. She went for a helicopter ride on her 103rd birthday!
In Memory of
We are sad to let you know
about the passing of Trickie, one
of our demonstration dogs. Trickie, a Keeshond mix, was rescued
from the Yreka Animal Shelter in 2002 and began Hearing
Dog training. We found he didn’t have the motivation to work
the sounds on a regular basis. He preferred just relaxing and
being petted. Beth Hay, our Client Services Coordinator, adopted Trickie and worked with him to become a Therapy Dog
and began visiting nursing homes and the veterans’ hospitals.
As Trickie matured, we decided to see if he might possibly be
suited to be a demonstration dog, showing people how we train
Hearing Dogs. While he didn’t want to work 24/7 for someone
who has hearing loss, he proved very willing to show off his skills
to an audience.
Trickie
As one of our demonstration dogs, Trickie educated many people
about how we trained the dogs to help people with hearing loss.
Trickie
This spring Trickie started having some kidney problems. We tried some treatments, but, sadly,
they didn’t work. Beth and the veterinarian decided there was nothing that could be done to give
Trickie any quality of life, so, he peacefully went to sleep. Trickie lived 13 years and spent most
of that time educating people about Dogs for the Deaf. Thanks, Trickie, we miss you.

DOGS FOR THE DEAF
rescues/trains/places six types of dogs to help with different disabilities, challenges, and needs.
Hearing Dogs
Autism Assistance Dogs
Program Assistance Dogs
Miracle Mutts (special dogs for special people)
Harmony’s Hounds (dogs with special needs)
Career Change Dogs
HEARING DOGS are trained to alert people to household sounds that are necessary for everyday safety and independence. They are trained to make physical contact and lead their person to the source of the sound. By providing sound awareness and companionship, these dogs enhance parenting skills, increase employability, and provide
greatly increased freedom and independence.
AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOGS are trained to enhance the safety of children with autism by acting as an anchor and
preventing the child from bolting into unsafe environments such as traffic, bodies of water, etc. Autism Assistance
Dogs can also have a calming effect on the child and may improve the child’s willingness and ability to communicate
and bond.
PROGRAM ASSISTANCE DOGS go to work with and assist professionals such as physicians, teachers, counselors, and courtroom advocates in the treatment of and work with their clients. These dogs can help improve overall
cognitive development and provide a calming effect, allowing the professional to better serve or treat the clients. These
dogs do not have public access except when accompanying the professionals and their disabled clients in order to
provide assistance to the clients.
MIRACLE MUTTS (special dogs for special people) are wonderful, loving dogs who can provide companionship,
motivation, and emotional support to people who need a “helping paw.” After veterinary care, some training, and confidence building, these dogs are placed with adults and children who have a physical, mental, or emotional need that
can be helped with a loving pet or companion. These needs might include depression, loneliness, stroke, or mental
or emotional challenges. Miracle Mutts provide a reason to get up in the morning, motivation to exercise, and they
generally make life worth living. Miracle Mutts do not have public access rights.
HARMONY’S HOUNDS (dogs with special needs) are dogs we rescue from shelters and, during the medical evaluation or later in training, are found to have a special physical or emotional need that prevents them from completing
training. These dogs need someone willing to provide a stable, loving home and possible medical care. In the right,
nurturing environment, these dogs can thrive and provide lots of love and companionship.
CAREER CHANGE DOGS are wonderful dogs who are happy and healthy but just not suited to working for a living.
These dogs make loving pets and companions and are looking for their forever homes.

Planned Giving… Creating a Legacy
It is your right to choose who benefits from your estate after your death. Don’t let the
state do it for you! A valid will or trust is the only way to protect your loved ones and to
designate and benefit a charity. If you were to die without a will or trust, the laws of your
state would determine the distribution of your property as it sees fit, and your family and
friends could battle and lengthen probate for years.
Throughout your lifetime you are in control of your assets and can make changes anytime. Planned gifts also allow you to make a larger gift than you may be able to do right
now.
Planned gifts can create special opportunities and benefits for both the donor and Dogs
for the Deaf. You can allocate a percentage or cash sum to benefit a charity such as Dogs for the Deaf. There can
be considerable tax benefits - including income payments for life (Charitable Gift Annuity) or you can also reduce
or delay capital gains taxes. For more information and to learn the benefits of making a planned gift, please talk
with your financial advisor.
Remember to review and update your estate plans (will/trust) as needed due to marriages, divorces, births, financial gains/losses, or charitable gifts. A valid will or trust is the only way to protect your loved ones and to designate
and benefit a charity. Here are some ways you can make charitable gifts or a bequest to benefit a charity.

Pet-O-Bed has generously donated their wonderful beds for the dogs in

Pet-O-Beds have six inches of polyurethane foam with a unique contoured sleeping (nesting) area, making
them the ultimate in comfort. Pets scratch other beds because they are trying to create a nesting area. Pet-OBed has a built-in nesting area. These beds also have durable covers that can be machine washed over and
over and slip on and off like a contoured sheet — no zippers. Pet-O-Beds come in different sizes, and several
cover options are available. For more information on these great pet beds, contact:

offered to sell the product to our recipients at a special “rescue” price.
We are now using Nupro All Natural Supplement as a

The KONG Company
Donates Over 100 KONGS!
The KONG Company has generously donated over 100 KONGS to
DFD. Our dogs now enjoy a daily dose of mental enrichment by chewing and licking their way through such delicacies as banana KONGS,
KONGSICLES, cream cheese KONGS, and turkey and mashed potato KONGS. Our dogs also get part of each meal from a KONG that
keeps them busy between training sessions. This helps alleviate barking, boredom, and chewing. Thanks to help from
friends like KONG, we are able to continue our
efforts for mental enrichment for the dogs in
training.
Get a KONG for your favorite canine. Check
them out at kongcompany.com and thank them
for their generous support of DFD.

Notes from Robin
First of all, I want to thank those
of you who sent in notes of congratulations and stories for the
Book of Remembrance in recognition of my 30th anniversary with
Dogs for the Deaf. They were
sweet, meaningful, and funny.
Some I had forgotten all about,
so it brought back great memories. Thank you for making this anniversary extra special. Since the book is still
in progress, you can still send in a memory for inclusion. I
would love to hear from you.
How can it possibly have been 30 years? It seems like
time just flew by. We have built a firm foundation, rescued
thousands of dogs, and helped even more people. As we
begin the second half of 2011, we are continuing to develop plans that will enable us to help even more dogs and
people.
With the addition of training programs to help children with
autism and people with depression, panic/anxiety attacks,
post-traumatic stress disorder, stroke, arthritis, etc., we
are now able to adopt a wider variety of dogs and help
people with a wider variety of disabilities and challenges.
The infrastructure is in place, and we are placing these
new types of dogs and encouraging people to apply for
them. Of course, we are still training and placing the very
best Hearing Dogs, just as we have done for 34 years.
This means not only helping people with hearing loss but
also helping
• keep autistic children safe and enhance their development
• alleviate depression and loneliness in elderly people
• enable teachers, counselors, and other professionals to work more effectively with their students, patients, and clients
• rehabilitation patients gain strength and increase
mobility and strength
• veterans and others with post-traumatic stress disorder or panic/anxiety attacks function more effectively
With these developments, we are now putting into effect
some changes that will bring new eyes, new ideas, and
new talents to DFD. Staff will not be spread so thin, and
we will be able to make the best use of everyone’s skills
and talents. This will make DFD an even better organization than it has been.
Stay tuned for the next issue for more details and have a
wonderful rest of the summer.
As always, thank you for your continuing and faithful support. We love all of you—our DFD family.
President/CEO
Lance continues to amaze me. Not only does he help
me by alerting me to sounds, but he learns new words
regularly and seems to understand short sentences. He
will stop on his way to dinner if I say, “Let’s take your
harness off.” Please use the enclosed check to help
another “cute” dog.
Clare N. and Lance, California
Thank you for supporting Dogs for the Deaf through your workplace giving campaigns! The Combined
Federal Campaign, United Way, Independent Charities of America, individual state campaigns, and other
independent workplace campaigns make up many of our wonderful donors supporting our mission. Most
workplace campaigns accept designations to Dogs for the Deaf, Inc. by name.
If your workplace campaign or the corresponding website requires our IRS employer identification number, it is: EIN# 93-0681311. Please write in “Dogs for the Deaf, Inc.” on your designation form to ensure
that your donation is being properly directed to our organization. We are listed in the “Animal Charities of
America” section of the Combined Federal Campaign pamphlet. The “Best In America” service mark pictured here is awarded to fewer than 2,000 out of 1,000,000 charities nationwide by the Independent Charities of America.
We are proud to announce that Dogs for the Deaf, Inc. received authorization to display this service mark in our correspondence, on our letterhead, in the newsletter, and on our website. Your designation to support the rescue and training
of our special dogs is much appreciated!

NEW DOGS FOR THE DEAF DVD
Hot Off the Duplicating Equipment - Available NOW!
We are proud to announce that we have a brand new DVD available that gives an inside
look at all we do at DFD.
This DVD includes updated information on all the types of dogs we are
now training - Hearing Dogs, Autism Assistance Dogs, Program Assistance Dogs, and Miracle Mutts. It shows dogs in training, and includes
testimonials from our recipients. It is beautifully done in HD and is truly a
professional production.
Gayle Wilson
Carrie B., DFD Trainer,
working with the dogs
If you live too far away to visit us, this is an excellent way to learn more
about DFD and “tour” our facility.
We also hope you will consider showing this DVD to others in your area, educating individuals and clubs about
the services we provide - rescuing dogs and helping people with a variety of disabilities. This is an excellent
opportunity to help our DFD family expand and have more people supporting our work and mission. Hopefully,
it will also encourage people who might benefit from one of our specially trained dogs to apply for a dog.
On this DVD, there are two versions - 20 minutes and 4 minutes. This gives you flexibility, according to the time
you have available for showing it.
This DVD is available for purchase for $12.00 or you can borrow it for a two-week period at no charge - just pay
return postage. We hope you enjoy the video and that you share it.
Special thanks to DFD Board Member Gayle Wilson for writing and directing this production and to the Oregon
Good Sam Club members and chapters for funding a major portion of the cost of production.
We Appreciate You!
During these difficult economic times, we are more grateful than ever for your commitment to helping us
rescue, train, and place these special dogs with the people who need them and benefit so greatly from them.
With your continued support, we promise we will continue this special work. We are a team, and together we
will come through this challenging time stronger and better than ever.

In June our Pres./CEO,
Robin Dickson, and demonstration dog Bonsai attended the Grand Lodge
Annual Convention of the Benevolent,
Patriotic Order of Does in Des Moines,
Iowa. This group is the women’s auxiliary of
the Elks Club, and they have been generously donating to DFD for many years. On
the opening night of the convention, Jo Newton, their Public Relations Committee Chair,
presented Robin with a check for DFD for
$25,202.75. This represented their fundraising efforts for the first six months of the year!
These generous ladies continue to be very
excited to help DFD rescue dogs and help
people with hearing loss, autism, and other
disabilities and challenges. There was hardly a dry eye in the room as Robin told about
some of the things these specially trained
dogs have done in the past year to help their
human partners. Thank you BPO DOES for
your continuing hard work and dedication to
helping DFD.

It is Dogs for the Deaf’s policy to never sell,
trade, or rent the names and addresses on our
mailing list. All of you who receive this newsletter are a very special part of our family and
you are essential to us in achieving our goal of
enabling dogs and people to enjoy more love,
freedom, and security in their lives. We promise
never to jeopardize your trust by giving your
name and address to others.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS: If you change
your address, please let us know. Every newsletter that is returned to us costs DFD money.
Let us know when you move and help us save
precious dollars. Thank You!
JUST A REMINDER - We want our donors
to have access to information about DFD in
order to answer any questions they may have.
Pursuant to this, copies of our annual audit are
available from DFD and from many state Attorney General offices.
DUPLICATE NEWSLETTERS? Are you
receiving more than one newsletter? If so,
please clip the labels off both newsletters and
send them to us so we can correct the error
and save postage costs. Thank you for helping
in this way.
