MEREDITH COLLEGE
Time Cards & Leave Balances
Several of you mentioned time cards and leave balances in your
comments on the recent Human Resources Employee Satisfaction
Survey. While we would like to make electronic time reporting available to
Meredith staff, at this point in time it is unfortunately not financially
possible. However, we are currently exploring our options and hope to be
able to offer this in the future.
Sick and annual leave balances can be viewed on
WebAdvisor. We are happy to announce that leave
reported on each monthly time card is now being posted
the same day we receive it, with few exceptions. Please
keep in mind that leave balances are only as accurate as
the most recent time card received in the HR office.
Please be sure to turn your time cards in on time!
Our Next Holiday
College offices will be closed on
Thursday and Friday, July 4-5, 2013
for Independence Day.
Inside this issue:
Please mark these hours as
“Other” on your time card.

Play it Safe in the Sun!
Summer is officially here! We are inevitably gravitating toward outdoor activities that
allow us to bask in the warmth of the sun. Additional exposure to the sun means we need to
be certain we are taking the necessary steps to protect our skin against the damage the
sun’s rays can cause. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are the main cause of skin
cancer. UV damage can also cause wrinkles and blotchy skin. Most skin cancer appears
after age 50, but skin damage from the sun can start during childhood. Protecting your skin
from the sun today may help prevent skin cancer later in life.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Each year, more than
68,000 Americans are diagnosed with melanoma, and another 48,000 are diagnosed with
an early form of the disease that involves only the top layer of skin. Also, more than 2
million people are treated for basal cell or squamous cell skin cancer each year. Basal cell
skin cancer is several times more common than squamous cell skin cancer.
Though the statistics are sobering, skin cancer is actually one of the most preventable
forms of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, you can reduce your risk of
developing skin cancer by following a few easy steps:
 Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The sun’s rays are the strongest from mid-morning to
late afternoon. Try to stay out of the sun during these
hours.
 Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
Use sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection.
To get the most protection, wear sunscreen even on
cloudy days because UV rays can still harm your
skin through the clouds. Plan ahead and put sunscreen on 30 minutes before you go
outside. Be sure to use enough sunscreen (a handful). Don’t forget to apply it to your
lips, ears, hands, feet, and back of the neck. If you wear very light clothing, put
sunscreen on under your clothes. Put on more sunscreen every few hours and after
you swim or sweat.
 Cover up with long sleeves, a hat, and sunglasses.
Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants or a long skirt. A hat with a wide brim can
help protect your face and neck. The skin around your eyes is very sensitive. Wear
wrap-around sunglasses to help protect your eyes and your skin from sun damage.
 Check your skin once every month.
Check your whole body once a month. Pick a day and mark it on your calendar so you
don’t forget. Skin cancer can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated
early. That’s why it’s a good idea to check your skin every month for new growths
and other signs of cancer. Tell your doctor or nurse right away if you find a change.
It’s not possible or practical to avoid sunlight completely, and it would be unwise to reduce
your level of activity to avoid the outdoors; physical activity is important for good health.
Take the necessary steps today and play it safe in the sun!

Handbook Reminder: Workers’ Compensation
Meredith College provides a comprehensive workers’ compensation
insurance program to our employees. The workers’ compensation
program covers injuries or illnesses sustained in the course of
employment that require medical, surgical or hospital treatment.
Employees injured during the performance of their work duties
are eligible for benefits which could include medical care for
treatment of work-related injuries and compensation for working
time lost resulting from such injuries. There is no premium cost to
employees for this accident insurance.
It is crucial that you inform your supervisor immediately about any work-related injury or
illness, regardless of how minor it might appear at the time. Immediate reporting ensures
that, if eligible, you will qualify for workers’ compensation benefits as quickly as possible
and also lets us investigate the matter promptly. Failure to report an injury or illness is
grounds for disciplinary action.
In the event of an injury, please seek the appropriate
medical attention, if necessary. For minor illnesses
and injuries, employees are encouraged to use the
Meredith Health Center during operating hours. If the
Health Center is closed or the injury is more severe,
please seek help at an urgent care type facility. If the
injury is very severe, seek immediate help at a hospital
emergency room. Medical transportation will be paid
for those situations where it is medically necessary.
The College maintains an agreement with Accent Urgent Care on Blue Ridge Road to
provide services without requesting any advance fees from the employee. Please contact
Human Resources so that we may authorize the treatment with the provider. If an
employee goes to a facility that requires him/her to pay a fee,
this fee will be reimbursed if the workers’ compensation claim is
approved. If it is not approved, this fee can be filed on the
employee’s health insurance after the determination is made.
Workers’ compensation is intended to cover only work-related
injuries and illnesses. Because of this, neither Meredith College
nor our insurance carrier will be liable for the payment of
workers’ compensation benefits for injuries that might occur
during an employee’s voluntary participation in off-duty
recreational, social or athletic activities that the College may
sponsor.
