Dear Notre Dame Hockey Fans:
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding representation of our school
demonstrated by the student-athletes, coaches, parents, and friends of the Notre Dame hockey
program. Our school is blessed to be able to offer such a terrific program thanks to the terrific
program supporters and boosters. On the ice, in the stands, and always, we hope you continue to
demonstrate the values of the Notre Dame community by cheering on our teams.
Having had a chance to see the Stanley Cup at Notre Dame for the second time in four years, we’ve
been able to see the reward for hard work, excellence, and preparation as demonstrated by the
Chicago Blackhawks. Let’s hope that some of those excellent characteristics rubbed off on our
program so that the Dons can bring home their own championship trophy.
The support of parents, relatives, friends, and alumni of our hockey program is instrumental to the
team’s success. The early mornings and late nights are indicative of the hard work and community
support that are required to be successful. Thanks to all of you who have helped contribute to the
hockey program.
We all have much to be thankful for, and the blessings that have been bestowed upon the hockey
team are many. We pray for the safety and best effort of all the competitors. Good luck to you

On behalf of the Notre Dame College Prep Community, I want
to wish the ND Hockey Teams the Best of Success for the 2013-14 season.
ND Hockey is one of our premier programs, recognized for
excellent play and stout sportsmanship. This tough, fast -pace game
embodies hard work and dedication, and that is what our players, coaches and
parents all bring to the ND Hockey Program.

The Notre Dame Athletic Club would like to wish the ND Ice Dons a winning season!!
We would also like to invite all to come join us at our monthly meetings which are listed on the
school calendar.
Athletic Club Facts:

The Club is made up of current and alumni parents of Notre Dame students/athletes.

The Club was resurrected in 2005 in an effort to provide the Athletic Department with
additional monies to fund all Athletic Programs at Notre Dame.

The goal is to provide coaches with what they need to help our athletes be the best they can
be.
Top 4 Reasons why The Athletic Club is so great:

The Club has raised over $800,000 in the past eight years to supply additional financial support
to the Athletic Programs.

Funds are raised thru a variety of fundraising efforts: Football Frenzy, Annual Fashion Show,
Concessions, Ad Books and donations.

Monies have been spent to provide needed items for all Notre Dame Sport Teams.

The purchases authorized by The Club, in fact, benefit the entire school, not just the Athletic

Notre Dame Hockey
Michael Schwass Award
#21
Michael Schwass was a co-captain of the Notre Dame
High School 1975-1976 Illinois State Champions and one
of the top prep hockey players in the State.
In December, 1975, a check from behind resulted in his
crashing into the end boards, rendering him
quadriplegic. While the team went on to capture the
title, Michael went on to achieve other victories.
Befriended and encouraged by Chicago Blackhawks
great, Keith Magnuson, he challenged beliefs about what
was possible with a spinal cord injury. While it took him six years of fierce
dedication to take that first step, Michael became the first quadriplegic to walk
again without the aid of braces. He went on to inspire disabled and able-bodied
alike as a motivational speaker, therapist, and life coach. He earned a master’s
degree in social work and created a private practice to help disabled and ablebodied clients. His autobiography, Don't Blame the Game, outlines the principles
he employed to maintain his motivation and focus. His grace, dignity and
strength of character were an example for all while enduring great suffering.
In addition to the Notre Dame Michael Schwass Award and other honors, the
Blackhawk Cup High School Most Valuable Player Award was renamed in his
honor.
Michael's #21 was retired by Notre Dame Hockey in 2006 and he passed away in
2010.

named in honor of the late Notre Dame Hockey All-Star, Mike Schwass '76.

Boarding
Checking (shoving) an opponent so that he is thrown violently against the
boards.
Official Signal: Pounding the closed fist of the non-whistle hand into the open
palm of the other hand.
Charging
Taking more than three skating strides prior to checking an opponent.
Official Signal: Rotating clenched fists around one another in front of chest.
Checking from Behind
Checking or hitting an opponent whose back is facing you, often into the boards.
Official Signal: Non-whistle arm placed behind the back, elbow bent, forearm
parallel to the ice surface.
Cross-Checking
Hitting an opponent with both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on
the ice.
Official Signal: A forward motion with both fists clenched extending from the
chest.
Delayed Penalty
When a referee signals that he is about to penalize a player, but will not stop
play until the team to be penalized touches the puck.
Official Signal: The non-whistle hand is extended straight above the head

Elbowing
Using an elbow in any way to foul an opponent.
Official Signal: Tapping the elbow of the whistle hand with the opposite hand.
Hand Pass
Called when a player uses his hand to direct the puck to another player from the
same team in the offensive or neutral zone. Hand passes are allowed in the defensive zone.
Official Signal: The non-whistle hand (open hand) and arm are placed straight
down alongside the body and swung forward and up once in an underhand motion.
High Sticking
Striking your opponent while carrying the stick above shoulder level.
Official Signal: Holding both fists, clenched, one immediately above the other, at
the side of the head.
Holding
Holding an opponent from moving with hands or stick or any other way.
Official Signal: Clasping the wrist of the whistle hand well in front of the chest.
Hooking
"Hooking" a stick around an opponent to try to block his progress.
Official Signal: A tugging motion with both arms, as if pulling something toward
the stomach.

Icing
Intentionally shooting the puck from behind the center red line over your opponent's goal line. Not technically a penalty, icing results in a faceoff in the offending team's zone.
Official Signal: The instant that the conditions required to establish "icing the
puck'' have occurred, the referee will blow his whistle to stop play, and raise
his non-whistle hand over his head. The back official will move to the resulting
face-off spot and give the icing signal.
Interference
Illegal body contact with an opponent who is not in possession of the puck, or
knocking an opponent's fallen stick out of his reach.
Official Signal: Crossed arms stationary in front of chest with fists closed.
Penalty Shot
When an attacking player has been clearly pulled down preventing a breakaway
shot on the goalie.
Official Signal: Crossed arms stationary in front of chest with fists closed.
Slashing
Hitting an opposing player with the stick or swinging the stick at an opposing
player.
Official Signal: One chop with the non-whistle hand across the straightened
forearm of the other hand
Spearing
Stabbing an opponent with the point of the stick blade while the stick is being
carried in one or both hands.
Official Signal: A single jabbing motion with both hands together, thrust forward from in front of the chest, then dropping hands to the side.

Tripping
Using a stick, knee, foot, arm, hand, or elbow to cause an opponent to trip
or fall.
Official Signal: Strike the side of the knee (non-whistle side) and follow
through once, keeping the head up and both skates on the ice.
Washout
When used by a referee it means the goal does not count; when used
by a linesman, it means there is no icing or off-sides.
Official Signal: Both arms swung laterally across the body at shoulder
level with palms down

Junior Varsity - Coaches
Terry Bailey - JV, Head Coach
Terry grew up on the southwest side of Chicago and graduated from St. Xavier
University. This season will mark Terry’s 14th season in coaching youth hockey.
He began coaching with the Northern Express Hockey Organization in 1997 and
held numerous head coaching and assistant coaching positions for teams ranging
from Mites through Bantams. In addition to his regular coaching position, Terry
spent many years coaching in the Learn-to-Skate program at Express and on
occasion assisted Kenny McCudden at his Ice Company Skill Development Clinics.
While being a head coach with Express, he also spent three years in the high
school coaching ranks as an assistant coach with the Maine Township Hockey
Organization’s varsity team, and twice making it to the final 8 in AHAI State
Combined Division. Terry holds a level 4 USA Hockey Coaching Education Certificate. This is Terry’s
second year with Notre Dame Hockey.
Terry and his wife, Patty, are parents to three boys and make their home in the City of Des Plaines.
Andrew Grimes - JV, Assistant Coach
Andrew Grimes played hockey at Glenbrook South High School from 2000-2004.
He continued playing organized hockey while attending Western Michigan
University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Andrew’s
coaching career started with Northern Express Hockey in 2010 when he coached
their squirt level team. He is currently a level three coach, and this marks his
second year coaching at Notre Dame. In his free time, he continues to play on a
men’s league team and enjoys spending time with his wife, Jennifer and their
puppy, Stella.

Jim Fitzgerald - JV, Assistant Coach
Jim has 20+ years of hockey coaching experience and over 25 years of youth
sports coaching experience overall. He started with Mighty Mites at Glenview
before going to Niles House. Beginning in 1999, Jim spent 4 years at Maine as the
Assistant Varsity Coach. In 2003, he served as Maine’s JV Head Coach for 2 yrs.
Jim’s son Dave joined him as the Assistant JV Coach. Together they went to the
State Championship Game in 2004 and took 2nd Place. Jim moved into Maine’s
Varsity Head Coaching position in 2005. During those 3 years, Jim’s Varsity team
made it to the Elite 8 twice.
In 2008, Jim and Dave went on to work for the Express organization where they
coached Squirts for 1 year and Bantams for 4 years; winning a State
Championship in 2010. Jim has lived in Des Plaines for 55 years. He and his wife of 35 years, Kim, have 3
children and 2 grandchildren. Jim worked for Hodsco Masonry Cons. for the past 38 years.
Dave Fitzgerald - JV, Assistant Coach
Dave grew up in the city of Des Plaines and graduated from Eastern Illinois
University. This season will be Dave’s 7th season as a youth hockey coach. Dave
started coaching at the Junior Varsity level with the Maine Township Hockey
Organization from 2003 - 2005. Dave also served as an assistant coach with the
Northern Express Hockey Organization from 2008 – 2013 at the Squirt and Bantam
level, where he and his father Jim led their team to a State Championship win in
2010. In addition to coaching ice hockey, Dave also coached Junior Varsity girl’s
softball for 4 years and Varsity girl’s field hockey for 2 years at Highland Park High
School. In December Dave will be taking his USA Hockey level 4 coaching
certification. Dave and his wife Kate just welcomed their first child and currently
reside in Des Plaines.

Bart Czachor - Varsity, Head Coach
The 2013-2014 campaign will mark Bart Czachor’s 2nd season guiding the Notre
Dame Ice Don’s hockey fortunes. The veteran coach owns a resume with success at
the travel level, coaching Midget hockey and also serving as Hockey Director.
Throughout his coaching career, Czachor’s teams have been successful both on and
off the ice, and the hope is he can continue to deliver those same results for the Ice
Dons.
Over the past 16 seasons (at Notre Dame, Northern Express Hockey Organization
and the McFetridge Bulldogs) Czachor has built some of the winningest programs
around. The teams have captured several NIHL championships, along with three 2nd
place finishes at the Midget level in the State championships, and other 3rd and 4th
place finishes in State. Czachor has had several players go on to play at the College and Junior level programs.
This season presents an interesting challenge for Czachor and his program. Building on last year’s improvement
Bart hopes to develop an even greater identity for competing in the Catholic League.”I think we have gone
through a lot of highs and lows last year. We’re looking for more consistency. The Dons need to continue to play
with poise and discipline, relying on strong goaltending and improved defensive play.” With the help of assistant
coaches Brad Czachor (‘02) and Jimmy Habetler, he hopes to continue to change the team’s attitude and
perception of the game. Czachor wants to continue to change the culture to lay down the foundation for future
seasons and the recruiting trail. He’d like the Ice Dons’ hockey team to be one of the elite teams in the state in
the near future and help advance each player to the next level of performance, wherever that may be.
“I am committed to this program and the kids involved with it”. We hope to not only develop hockey players but
develop student athletes with great character. We will continue to strive for success and ultimate goal of a State
championship.
Bart graduated from St. John’s Military Academy and then Lakeland College, with degrees in Sociology, Business
Administration and Physical Education, where he also played hockey, football and baseball. He and his wife Kelly
have three children; Brad, Erin and Ryan. Both sons are former ND students- Brad ’02 and Ryan ‘12
Brad Czachor - Varsity, Assistant Coach
Brad is very excited about joining the Notre Dame Hockey Program. He grew up on the
North side of Chicago and attended Notre Dame from 1998-2002. Brad’s playing
career began at the Express where he played all the way through his Senior year of
high school, with a couple of NIHL and State Championship appearances along the
way. Upon graduation from Notre Dame, he attended Iowa State University where he
was a four year defenseman on the Cyclone Hockey team. Brad’s experience at the
collegiate level took him all over the country, playing high levels of hockey, while
working to get his degree. Brad graduated in 2006 with a degree in Sport
Management. After his playing career at Iowa State, Brad entertained a couple offers
to continue his playing career but ultimately decided on becoming the Hockey Director
for the McFetridge Bulldogs, where he still is today. While serving as the Hockey Director at McFetridge,

Brad Czachor - Cont’d
Brad also served as an assistant and eventually the Head Coach of the Midget Major team at the Express, 20062010. At the Express, they had a lot of success finishing no lower than 3rd in the State. Brad’s tenure with the
Bulldogs has been a successful one, with increasing numbers in the program from 95 to over 200 today. Along
the way he began a girls program, and in house mites program, and also acquired Tier II status and started
fielding teams in NIHL.
Brad is very excited to be a part of the Hockey Program here at Notre Dame and hopes to bring a wealth of
knowledge and experience to the program. He is looking forward to bringing Notre Dame back to the top.
Jim Habetler - Varsity, Assistant Coach
Growing up Jim played for Park Ridge Express. He attended Vermont Academy High
School where he played Varsity Soccer, Hockey and Lacrosse. Jim went on to attend
DePaul University where he played hockey and earned his degree in Secondary
Education with a concentration in Social Science.
Jim’s experience includes coaching Learn to Skate in Park Ridge (4 years) and
coaching a Franklin Park Panthers Mite team. Last season, Jim’s Franklin Park
Panthers Mites earned a spot to play for the Northwest Hockey League
Championship. Currently, Jim is working at Habetler Bowl in Chicago and is excited to
be a part of the Notre Dame Hockey Program.
Laura Anderson - Staff Assistant
Laura, a native of Chicago, has 14 years of experience managing hockey teams. In
addition to serving on the Northern Express BOD for 4 years she was responsible for
scheduling ice for the organization.
Laura, a proud mom, has one son who played for Niles, Express, Maine West and
Robert Morris University. She is thankful for the opportunity to stay involved with
hockey through Notre Dame College Prep and assist in growing our program.
