Leadership Wayne VII Slots Filling Up
Leadership Wayne will
enter its 7th year when the
class kicks off with a social
for all new students and alum
prior to the first class session.
Leadersip
Wayne
was
developed to cultivate and
grow new leaders as a step in
securing future community
vitality. Leadership Wayne
is especially valuable for
emerging leaders who want
to learn to work together for
common purposes; people
who want to expand their
leadership skills to apply
on the job or for personal
growth; committee chairs
who want to maximize the
impact of their volunteers;
and established leaders who
want to build a new set of
skills and relationships.
Leadership Wayne VII
will meet monthly on the
2nd Tuesday of each month
beginning in September
through May.
Sessions
begin at 9 am allowing for
participants to check in at
their job before class, and
end at 3 pm to allow time
to close out the workday.
The class location changes
each month to feature as
many local meeting facilities
as possible. The February
session traditionally involves
a field trip to the state capital
in Lincoln and a chance to
meet the governor and see
state senators in action.
Individuals are welcome
to enroll in Leadership
Wayne VII and businesses
are encouraged to support
the program by enrolling
employees.
The
$139
enrollment fee includes a
meal at each session and all
class materials.
Enrollment forms are
available at the Wayne Area
Economic
Development
Office, online at wayneworks.
org and are included in this
issue.
Class size is limited to the
first 20 students or August
14, whichever comes first
and there are 10 students
registered to date.
Taste of Wayne Tailgate
The
local
young
professional group, Forward
Wayne, will host the 2nd
Annual Taste of Wayne Blue
Devil Tailgate on August
28. Tailgaters are invited
to join the fun before the
kickoff with O’Neill at WSC
Memorial Field. The tailgate

Governor Hosts Town Hall in Wayne
Introduced by District 17
Senator Dave Bloomfield,
Governor Ricketts addressed
the audience and discussed
some of the changes he has
made since taking office.
He was interested to hear
from local citizens about
their concerns and much of
the discussion focused on
taxes and how Nebraska can
compete with other states
to attract jobs. After taking

Budgeting for Non-Profits
…It’s A Collaborative
Process
While the City of Wayne
starts discussing its budget
for FY 2016, Wayne Area
Economic
Development
starts its budget process as
well. Although WAED’s fiscal
year (FY) doesn’t start until
January 1, we take a special
interest in the City’s budget
workshops since WAED’s
budget is funded by nearly
35% from the City. While
WAED receives 35% of its
resources from the City, it
funds 30% of its budget from
membership
investments
and the remaining 35%
from programming and
miscellaneous
(Chicken
Show, Vendor Golf, Special
events, grants, investments,
rent, etc.).
WAED has operated with
nearly the same base budget
since 2010 (approximately
$285,000…give or take
depending on the projects for
the specific year). While our
costs continue to rise (wages,
insurance, utilities, supplies,
etc), we are proud that we
have maintained a relatively
flat budget over the last few
years. This includes the same
amount of funding from the
City as well as membership
investments rates that have
not changed since WAED
started in 2006! How have we
been able to do this?
The WAED Board (both
past and present) has done an
excellent job of balancing the
budget each year (with the
same amount of resources/
revenues and rising costs/
expenses). Following the lead
from its core committees’
budget requests each year,
the Board has been able to
handle increased costs by
shifting budget requests
around each year amongst
committee work and its own
goals and objectives. It is
truly a collaborative effort.
The Committees understand
the organization’s resources
and make their requests
accordingly. This makes our
job in the office (helping to
prepare the budget) so much
easier. Too often you hear
of budget requests being
By: Wes Blecke
cut in half or more because
the asking entities requests
“the moon.” Again, we are
fortunate that we don’t have to
make drastic cuts to requests
because our committees do
great work with very little
financial resources.
Not to pat ourselves too
much on our own backs…
the WAED office staff truly
watches the expenses on a
daily basis. Some would say
we are downright “cheep”!
We try to do the most with
the least amount of resources
and not compromise the
professional nature in our
office, programs, or BRE
appearances
(business
retention and expansion).
It truly takes a joint
effort from the Board, the
Committees, Subcommittees,
Task Forces, and the WAED
staff to keep costs down and
still provide a quality product
to the community. If you ever
have questions about WAED’s
budget or its process, don’t
hesitate to contact the office
or a Board member
