1st and 2nd, t h e e n t i r e York Cycle of Mystery P l a y s was performed a t King's College
C i r c l e on t h e u n i v e r s i t y of Toronto campus. This was a v e r y e x c i t i n g event: t h e
f i r s t time i n n e a r l y 500 y e a r s t h a t t h e e n t i r e c y c l e had been performed outdoors.
W
e w e r e i n v i t e d t o dance a s a p a r t of a Medieval f a i r t h a t was scheduled i n t h e
c e n t r e o f t h e c i r c l e . " A p e r s i s t e n t r a i n and cold weather complicated m a t t e r s
("Adam and Eve s h i v e r e d through t h e Garden of Eden") and e v e n t u a l l y f o r c e d t h e
pageant indoors on Saturday. Sunday was s t i l l c o l d , b u t mostly d r y and t h e p l a y s
and dancing continued outdoors. " A l l i n a l l i t was an experience w e w i l l long

Something h a s been b o t h e r i n g m e about t h e Morris f o r some t i m e now: namely
t h e g e n e r a l l a x i t y of s t a n d a r d s of dance(ing) t h a t h a s appeared. I ' m n o t t a l k i n g
about d i f f e r e n t approaches, b u t j u s t downright s l o p p i n e s s .
I r e a l i z e , of c o u r s e , t h a t Morris h a s i t s a o c i a l s i d e ( e s p e c i a l l y t o u r i n g ) ,
It's a matter
but i t seems t o m e t h a t t h e p r e s e n t a t i o n of t h e dance must b e
of r e s p e c t f o r She t r a d i t i o n and a knowledge of what you o r , i f you're a l e a d e r ,
your team can r e a l l y p r e s e n t . I ' v e never been an advocate of t h e r i g i d "up t o t h e
same c e n t i m e t e r i n Half Gip" school: t h e Morris is c a p a b l e of s u s t a i n i n g a wide
range of s e l f expression. *at h a s d i s t u r b e d m e i n t h e p a s t few y e a r s i s t h e spect a c l e of people s o e a g e r t o 'dance out and do something d i f f e r e n t t h a t t h e y ' r e
s p e c i a l i z i n g i n a d i f f i c u l t t r a d i t i o n a f t e r only a few months of being t o g e t h e r .
What I ' d l i k e t o see i s a l o t more a t t e n t i o n paid t o t h e b a s i c s ( t h e
double and s i n g l e s t e p s , well-defined arm movements, etc. and t h e n have some s o r t
of coherent t e a m s t y l e molded from t h e s e i n d i v i d u a l accomplishments. To b e s p e c i f i c ,
I t h i n k anyone who t a k e s on t h e r e s p o x f s i b i l i t y , however b r i e f l y , of l e a d i n g a new
t e a m should c o n t a c t a n e s t a b l i s h e d group (Marlboro, Bittghamton, Black J o k e r s , etc.)
and a s k t o a t t e n d a few of t h e i r p r a c t i c e s , n o t t o b r i n g back t h e l a t e s t Brackley
v a r i a n t , b u t t o experience t h e kind of work and d e d i c a t i o n involved.
I t h i n k t h a t t h e g r e a t expansion of t h e Morris i n t h e p a s t s e v e r a l y e a r s
i s a marvellous t h i n g : a f t e r a l l , i t ' s what some of u s have %een working toward
f o r a long t i m e . However, I f e e l t h a t t h i s same growth h a s brought w i t h i t t h e
problems I've t a l k e d about. Learning t h e dances should be a g r e a t p a r t of t h e enjoyment of dancing Morris
and I mean l e a r n i n g .
L e t ' s have a moratorium on teams going o u t b e f o r e t h e y ' r e ready and
plunging i n t o dances t h a t a r e beyond them. L e t ' s have a l i t t l e less ego and a l i t t l e
more p r i d e .

t o be a mad r u s h of groups t o t h e s t r e e t t o perform m o r r i s dances. I never completed
t h e e d i t o r i a l . T h i s p a s t w i n t e r a much more experienced dancer and t e a c h e r v e r b a l i z e d t h e same f e e l i n g s t h a t I had had. Arthur Cornelius has been dancing t h e Morris
