October 2012 elwoodcarecenter.com Excellence in Care & Compassion The Heart of the Matter… …Our Residents Teressa Marquardt Resident of the Month As our October Resident of the Month we honor Teressa Marquardt. Teressa Jane Marquardt was born May 3, 1941 to Hannah Marie Stumpf Hampton and Robert Daniel Hampton at Sutherland, Nebraska. She has two sisters, Patricia Walz of Hershey and Anna Schultz of New Mexico. Teressa attended school at Hershey and graduated with the class of 1959. She attended Kearney Teachers College at Kearney—graduating in 1973. She taught one year in Lincoln County country school, four years in Gosper County country schools and 12 years in Elwood. She taught 4th and 5th grades. Teressa met and married George Marquardt May 23, 1965 at Hershey, Nebraska. To their union two sons were born, George Louis of Oxford and John of Tribune, Kansas. George served in the Army in the Korean War in 1951-1952. George farmed and he worked 10 years for the Nebraska Department of Roads. George and Teressa always had a large garden, and they canned and froze the vegetables. Teressa and George are members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Teressa is a lifetime member of the National Teachers Association. Teressa loves to read, always a book at hand. She remembers fondly of taking George in a pull wagon where she pulled and John pushed to the Library. Also a special memory was hers and George’s honeymoon Washington D.C. They also enjoyed a trip to Canada. Teressa liked to keep busy as she did knitting, crocheting, oil painting and some stamping making Christmas cards. Teressa and George have two granddaughters and one grandson. Teressa became part of the Elwood Care Center family on May 18, 2012. We are happy to honor Teressa’s journey and are privileged to be a part of it. Elwood Care Center Board of Directors Chairman, Betty Koenig Nina Anderson Dick Bennett Bill Monter Jared Wetovick Assisted Living News We’d like to thank our Elwood community and our surrounding neighbors for your support over the last 40 years. Many of you have volunteered your time, served as an employee, have resided here or have had a loved one reside here. We thank each of you & we feel honored to have been a small part of your lives. On August 3rd Evelyn Leggott, Dora Stack and Dolores gathered in the dining room to make homemade Runza’s. The ladies made 30 Runza’s that were enjoyed by the residents in Assisted Living that evening. The rest were frozen for them to have anytime. Pictured below are our regular Assisted Living Staff: Kate Peterson, Sheryl Brown and Pam Wescoat. Fill in staff not pictured are Heidi Button and Jane Earhart. Pictured above are Larry and Peggy Mak and Dolores Oelkers eating warm Runzas. Below are the finished product. Great job ladies. Serving our Community for 40 Years Excellence in Care & Compassion Live a Life that Matters Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end, There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear. So, too your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won’t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant. So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; Not what you got, but what you gave. What will matter is not your success, but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence, but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, But how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone. What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not a matter of circumstance, but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters. -By Michael Josep The staff of ECC thank our residents for teaching us how to Live a Life that Matters.
