Paul’s 35th Anniversary reception. Labriola Bakery Café and Neapolitan Pizzeria 3021 Butterfield Rd., Oak Brook Ingram’s Busy Bee Bakery 5126 Main St., Downers Grove 7-Eleven 1490 E. For Christians, stewardship is an expression of gratitude for all of the gifts we have been given by God. Consistent and committed financial stewardship is essential for the ministries, administration, and operations of this parish. Commitment cards help us determine the financial contribution we can expect from those who are able to give, and are an essential tool used by parish leadership in making sound budget decisions. Please prayerfully consider what you can contribute financially to help St. Margaret Mary fulfill its gospel mission. Our goal is to receive a commitment card from all active parishioners. We especially encourage you to consider using ParishPay, our automated giving system. We currently have over 160 parishioners enrolled in this program. Please return your completed Commitment Card by Dec. 31. Thank you for your continued support and generosity, The Development Committee and Pastoral Council God’s Share Today we celebrate Christ the King and are reminded that all was created through Him and for Him. When: Jan. 29-30 here at SMMP This annual retreat began more than 20 years ago. During this retreat, you’ll have the opportunity to get to know other women of the parish and spend some time refocusing on you/ your growth as a Christian. This is a time to reflect and relax, away from the pressures and pace of daily life. Invest 1 ½ days in yourself and your relationship with God. Make it a priority. Call Cathy Wincup at 630.416.9968 for more information. In recent weeks the group learned about Holy Days, Saints, and life/ death issues (the Church’s teachings regarding abortion, cremation, death penalty, etc.) Last week, Tom Cordaro, Justice/ Outreach minister at SMM, spoke to the group about the Church’s social teachings on charity and justice. This week, the feast of Christ the King, the class will hear how various parishioners keep Christ as the center of their life. Happy Thanksgiving! 6 ASCA News Notes November began with a very special day at All Saints Catholic Academy, our All Saints feast day. This year we were honored that our new Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Joliet, Father John Belmonte, joined us. He concelebrated a beautiful Mass with Father Bill O'Shea, retired pastor of St. Margaret Mary Parish. Our 6th, 7th, and 8th grades students presented a program following the Mass, including 100 "C" words that represent our Catholic faith, "A through Z" words that portray the Year of the Eucharist, and a special song composed by our 8th grade students about our Catholic faith. Following the presentation, Fr. Belmonte visited classrooms at ASCA. Sunday, Nov. 7 had our ASCA gym filled with noise, cheering, and volleyball. Our 5A girls team played in the championship volleyball game against St. Michael's, Wheaton. The ASCA girls won the match in two games and secured first place in the tournament. Congratulations to coaches Stephanie VanEekeren and Maria Gulli and team members Taylor VanEekeren, Alyssa Gulli, Olivia Gregus, Annie Lalonde, Ava Geiger, Carli Mlsna, Julia Gallagher, and Lilly Johnson. On Tuesday, Nov. 9, almost 300 students in Grades 3-8 went on a field trip to see the "The Barber of Seville" at North Central College. Students enjoyed the short bus ride on the warm and sunny fall day. For many students, this was their first exposure to the theater and an opera. What an exceptional opportunity for our ASCA students! Contact John Schlaman via the parish office: 630-369-0777 8 Bearing the Fruit of Repentance & Bread of Peace for the World Parish Social Mission Week: December 5-11 The theme for this Parish Social Mission comes from the readings for the December 5th Second Sunday of Advent. Isaiah describes God’s vision for the world; where those who were once opposed to each other are reconciled and those who feared one another live in peace. John the Baptist warns that entry into this Kingdom of God will not be determined by our religious affiliation but by our willingness to change our behavior. Religious intolerance and the promotion of fear and mistrust between Christians and Muslims is contrary to our beliefs and counter to our national values. “Terrorist activity is continually recurring in various parts of the world, plunging people into grief and despair. Those who instigate and plan these attacks evidently wish to poison our relations and destroy trust, making use of all means, including religion, to oppose every attempt to build a peaceful and serene life together. Thanks be to God, we agree on the fact that terrorism of any kind is a perverse and cruel choice which shows contempt for the sacred right to life and undermines the very foundations of all civil coexistence. If together we can succeed in eliminating from hearts any trace of rancor, in resisting every form of intolerance and in opposing every manifestation of violence, we will turn back the wave of cruel fanaticism that endangers the lives of so many people and hinders progress towards - Pope Benedict XVI, World Youth Day 2005 world peace.” You can help build bridges of care & cooperation. Pope Benedict XVI reminds us, “Christians and Muslims, we must face together the many challenges of our time. There is no room for apathy and disengagement, and even less for partiality and sectarianism. We must not yield to fear or pessimism. Rather, we must cultivate optimism and hope.” Who Are Our Muslim Neighbors? A coffee & conversation with members of the local Muslim community Upper Room Sunday, December 5th, 12:00 noon (After the 10:45 Mass) 9 Please donate your early readers books to the Catholic Charities Head Start Program Pro-L.i.f.e. Thank you for your generosity. with Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Siegel Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Siegel will be celebrating a vigil "For All Nascent Human Life" at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet, Saturday, Nov. 27, 7:30 p.m. This celebration is in response to Pope Benedict's invitation to Dioceses around the world to have a holy hour for the protection of the unborn on this day. Pope Benedict XVI is holding a vigil the same day at the Basilica of St. Peter. Please join us for this special prayer for most vulnerable in our midst and for their mothers. Information from the USCCB can be found at: http://www.usccb.org/comm/ archives/2010/10-193.shtml . Grant us, O Lord, to know what we ought to know, to love what we ought to love, to praise what delights you most, to value what is precious in your sight, to hate what is offensive to you. Do not allow us to judge according to the sight of our eyes, or to pass sentence according to the hearing of our ears; but to discern with true judgment between things visible and spiritual, and above all to inquire what is the good pleasure of your will. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact the Life Office at (630) 718-2121. Adapted from a prayer of Thomas à Kempis, 1380–1471 10 St. Margaret Mary Parish Fiscal 2011 – July 2010 to September 2010 3-Month Interim Financial Report The Finance Committee is pleased to present our interim report on the financial results of St. Margaret Mary Parish. We believe it is important for all parishioners to know and understand our stewardship efforts and fiscal status as reflected in the attached financial report. These statements cover the first three months (July 2010 to September 2010) of our 2011 fiscal year which ends on June 30, 2011. Overview Sunday collections were $2k, or 0.5%, under budget and flat with last year. After several years of declining collections, it is positive to see that we are basically at budget and even with last year. Thank you for your support! The higher than budgeted tuition and fees is largely due to collecting tuition and following up on overdue accounts much faster this year as compared to prior years. Actual enrollment is about even with what was budgeted. Total expenses were $8k, or 2.1%, under budget as higher salaries (due to a timing difference between the budget and actuals payments) were more than offset by lower employment taxes, air conditioning maintenance, and various other expenses. In total, for the first three months of the year, our finances are $19k ahead of budget and $28k better than last year. Unfortunately, much of this is timing which is likely to reverse in future quarters. In addition, last year was a very weak year financially that is unsustainable in the long term. These are very challenging times for all parishioners and we sincerely appreciate your financial contributions. Please continue to be as generous as you can. One bright spot has been the reception to our new debt reduction green envelopes program. Since starting this program in April, you have given the parish $21k to be allocated to our Campaign Fund which is used to reduce our debt. The FY11 amount since July of $12k is included in Campaign Fund income (part of the $19k shown) and is not included in our Sunday Collections or anywhere else in the operating results. Thank you for your continued generous response to this need! May God continue to bless you and your family. Faithfully, St. Margaret Mary Finance Committee Larry Cap, Scott Filer, Anne Lysaught, Terry Wagner (Chairperson), Paul Weinewuth and Kevin Wirth (Finance Report continued on next page) 11 12 St. Margaret Mary Parish An At Home Retreat presents Treasures of the Heart: Fanning the Flame of Love Have you ever been interested in attending a retreat, but could not get away for two days, or even one? Have you ever wanted to “try” spiritual direction to see if it is for you? If that’s the case, a directed at-home retreat may be just for you. “As for Mary, she treasured all these things, and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19 What is it? A directed retreat is a time that God speaks personally to you through Scripture. A trained spiritual guide meets with you daily to help discover God’s message for you. When is it? Nov. 28—Dec. 3 at SMMP. You will meet with your spiritual guide for one-half hour each day at a time that is convenient to you, mornings, afternoon, evenings. A Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 30 begins this retreat. Why should I consider an at-home retreat? Many people express some kind of need for guidance in prayer. Often the need is described as a search for meaning in their lives, or a desire to deepen their personal relationship with God. Few people have the opportunity to explore their faith journey in a one-to-one situation where the focus is entirely on them and their relationship with God. For some, the week is a rare opportunity to be affirmed in their natural way of prayer and also to try different forms of prayer. “...I am reminding you now to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you...2 Timothy 1:6 Decide now to move to the heart of the gospel and revitalize your faith at our Parish Mission given by Fr. Michael Sparough, SJ. Fr. Michael is a retreat director at Bellarmine Retreat House in Barrington. He is the founder of Charis Ministries, a Jesuit outreach to young adults. How to Make Decisions with Confidence and Clarity, was recently published by Loyola Press. He is an entertaining evangelist who uses his performing skills to bring the gospel message of Jesus alive. Treasures of the Heart is a call to follow Jesus into the heart of the gospel. During this three day mission, Fr. Michael will lead us in prayer through dramatizations of stories and familiar gospel scenes, spiritual analogies illustrated by juggling, guided imagery prayer, engaging preaching, uplifting songs, and rituals of blessing. This mission is designed to challenge, delight and re-ignite the flame of God’s love in our hearts. The mission begins with Fr. Michael preaching all the weekend Masses on Jan. 15-16. Fr. Paul’s Homily The Best Way to Live Nov. 10, 2010 Do you ever get to the point where you say, Luke 17:11-19 “My life is moving too fast! Where did my energy go? “Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” There is a basic controversy about the relationship of Jesus’ teaching and the covenant of Israel. What people wonder, what scholars wonder, is whether the negative elements that are found clearly in St. Paul and then also in the gospels, little remarks like this one, are they really from Jesus? Well, obviously St. Paul’s teaching is not from Jesus. St. Paul more or less negates the whole value of the covenant of Sinai, saying it has been replaced now, fulfilled now, in Christ. But others aren’t so sure because, after all, what God gives God cannot take away, and even St. Paul said that. So what is the real relationship between the teachings of Jesus and the old way? It’s never going to be very clear, but we can surmise that Jesus was often disappointed in the way in which his fellow Jews, Israelites, lived and the way in which they related to God. Here he is making a point of this Samaritan, this foreigner, who is somehow responding rightly with proper gratitude for the gift he has been given. Now, “Where are the other nine?” Jesus asks. Of course the answer is they were doing what he told them to do; they were going to the priests. Now could the Samaritan go to the priests? Not really because those priests weren’t his priests. So in one way the Samaritan could not fulfill the instruction. The other nine were fulfilling the instruction. And Jesus expresses disappointment that they were doing exactly what he told them to do when, in fact, something better was available, at least first, that is, coming back and rendering thanks. So it’s not a clear-cut issue. Why was Jesus upset? Were these other nine really ungrateful or simply thoughtless or simply obedient, not thinking about doing anything until they finished their job, so to speak. And we have to be always aware of these different points of view. Why? Because the gospels do not present black and white issues, but intimation, all kinds of intimations about what would be a better way of living: “The law says this, but I say that.” Jesus said that often. What is the best way for us to live? One issue is: How are we really responding to the Holy Spirit within us? Now clearly this Samaritan was responding to the Holy Spirit. He is returning to give thanks to God embodied in Jesus through this gift of the Spirit. The others were being very dutiful. They were doing what they were told to do, but apparently not following the Spirit. So we have to be aware of this higher dimension that Jesus is calling us to, this dimension that only opens up when our hearts and souls are open to the Holy Spirit, when we start to see things and find directions and guidance, that it’s not a matter of words or instructions. It’s something beyond all that. “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” 17 I need to step back for awhile and pay attention to the deeper questions.” If this fits you, it's time to do something about it. We have just the opportunity for you! A retreat provides a quiet, reflective atmosphere, a chance to be with yourself and your God. Many retreat experiences await you. We are thankful for the scope of that rule—encompassing every tribe, every language, every color, every nation, every culture. We are thankful for the impact of that rule—for lives changed, for victories over addictions and compulsions, for justice prevailing over tyranny, for love subduing hatred, for grace replacing vengeance, for acceptance triumphing over discrimination. We are thankful for the unity of that rule—for the willingness to set aside petty grievances, for the willingness to set aside our own rights for the public good, for the grace to step aside, for the ability to join hands in a common cause. Scripture of the Day Luke 23:33-43 It was meant to be sarcastic, of course, that inscription that read “King of the Jews.” But some two thousand years later an anonymous author responded to that insult with the famous “One Solitary Life,” which ends with this ringing affirmation: “Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today he is the centerpiece of the human race and the leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that ever were built, and all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that One Solitary Life.” Please join the Naperville Men's Glee Club for a special Christmas concert hosted by St Margaret Mary Parish 18 Masses for the Week Saturday—Nov. 27 8:15—Mathai Enas — Family 2:30—Mary Manade & James Hess Wedding 5:00—Maureen Utecht — Eileen Berg Sunday—Nov. 28/First Sunday of Advent 7:30—For the Parish Family 9:00—Anita Costello — John & Mary Costello 10:45*—Mildred Hollingsworth — SMMP Contemporary Choir 12:15—George Rizza — Dolores Rizza Monday—Nov. 22/St. Cecilia, Virgin & Martyr 8:15—Scaria Chennikkara Tuesday—Nov. 23 8:15—Robert De La Cruz — Friends & Shirley Talbot Wednesday—Nov. 24/St. Andrew Dung-Lac, Priest Martyr & Companions, Martyrs 8:15—Michael Portelli — Family Thursday—Nov. 25/Thanksgiving 9:00—Greg Kolman — Terri, Adam & Kristin Friday—Nov. 26 8:15—Michelle Soriano — Family *Interpreted for the deaf Food for the Journey Scripture Readings for the Week Sacrament of Reconciliation Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Sunday: Saturdays, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Nov. 27 Dec. 4 Dec. 11 Thanksgiving Fr. Business Manager Michael Prus Capital Campaign Rosalie Fall “YES” TO THE KING The Church crowns the year of grace, its liturgical year, with the solemnity of Christ the King. We could assume that a celebration of this magnitude would provide us with an easy, clear presentation of who Christ is and who he calls us to be. But this feast flings the paradoxes of Christ’s kingship in our face. Is Christ all-powerful? Is he the Messiah, the Anointed of God? Is he a victim, powerless in the hands of mortal rulers? Is he dead on the cross? Is he alive in the splendor of eternal light? Is the inscription above his head true? Is he Shepherd or slaughtered lamb? The answer is “Yes.” Custodian Henry Vrbecky What may be even more difficult is that we have also answered “Yes” to following this complex, paradoxical King who reigns from the cross of death, who upsets our expectations and challenges us to upset many of the expectations of the world around us. But before we despair of being able to sustain the difficulty of this mission, we are also strengthened by Paul’s words to the Colossians. We are reminded that if we keep our eyes fixed on the cross, the throne of Christ, we will also find and know the source of our reconciliation, our peace, and our hope to join him, sharing the inheritance of the holy ones in light everlasting.
