COMMODORE’S NEWS
Another busy week at the Club and the weather most worthy of all
the events.
Andrew McLandress upped the ante this year, with the help of
Steve Maycher and honorary chairs Joan Richardson and Colin
Ferguson, by hosting 132 golfers at this years Over Water Golf
Classic Tournament replete with some history of the event and
some very professional score cards and signage. It was a course
full of lake adventures and enjoyed by all who participated. Great
job Andrew! Also thanks to the hole hosts who continue to overachieve. The Fish fry followed giving members and golfers all a
chance to catch up over a fabulous pickerel dinner.
On Sunday morning we held our 105th Gymkhana event. Nancy
Cyprik successfully steered volunteers and many young members
through a flurry of races and games. It was exhausting just
watching but the smiles on the kid’s faces were priceless! Kyle
Peterson emerged as the overall winner of the Gymkhana Trophy. Congratulations Kyle!
The Nanton Cup was also competed for on Sunday with six
scows, a keelboat and one of our new RS Feva’s all racing in a
perky South South East wind. If you are thinking of racing in the
parent child race next Sunday it is definitely time to reserve one of
our boats
Also next weekend we have the Yachtion to look forward to complete with Pancake Breakfast and Verandah Sale. Please
make sure you take the time to review the Yachtion list attached
to start planning your bidding attack.
On a parting note; please try to be conscientious by preregistering online for our programs and do call in advance of
Wednesday at noon which is the deadline for both Family Night
dinners and Thursday Dinners. The more notice our pro’s and
staff have the better experience for all members. See you at the
Club!

The Club recently acquired
two new sailboats for its
CANSail, Race
Team & Teen Sail programmes.
The RS Feva is made in England
of durable, low maintenance
rotomoulded plastic, making it
highly suited to the rigours of
youth sailing. It has a Mylar
mainsail, Dacron jib and an
asymmetrical spinnaker. The
hull is lightweight with an open
transom for easy drainage. The
RS Feva is an international class
boat with a growing fleet in Canada. When not in use for lessons,
the Club’s Fevas may be borrowed by Members, with a small
initial rigging fee.

WE NEED...YOU!
All of your sailing instructors are certified and insured by the Canadian Yachting Association. They undergo rigorous training, including First Aid training and Coach Boat Safety, in addition to theory

for Members to help run weekend races, alongside our trained instructors.
We have a particular need for assistance for the upcoming Richardson
Regatta. Duties would include setting

Hi everyone
We have had a busy week on the tennis courts at RLWYC. We had over twenty
kids for the sailing and tennis combo, over twenty people have been participating in Triple Threat, as well as another twenty participating in Adult Fit
throughout the week. Remember Triple Threat and Adult Fit is suitable for a
range of ages and playing levels so don’t be afraid to come try it out! Triple
Threat will be run at 1-2pm for the next few weeks. We have had a busy week

the next few weeks. Many people expressed disappointment that the Adult Fit
was not on the calendar again until August. I am excited to be able offer Adult

th
On Saturday 18 this coming weekend we have the Adult Mixed tournament
which has a new start time of 9:00am, from the original 9:30am start. This is to
accommodate for other events happening on the same day. So come sign up, if
you want you can email me or call me to put your name in. There is also asignup sheet on the board in the tennis room. If you do not have a partner let me
know and I will try to find you one. Playing tournaments is the best way to improve your game; as well it can be a lot of fun!
Just an update in the tennis world, Roger Federer recently played the final
of Wimbeldon 2015. Despite Roger’s form on grass leading up to the final, Djokovic was too good taking the match 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Djokovic is
now 8th on the most career Grand Slam titles list with nine; Federer is still in
the lead with seventeen.
To register for the Adult Mixed tournament or for any other information
or lesson bookings call me on 1(204) 905-0007 or
email TENNISPRO@RLWYC.CA.
Have a great week at RLWYC!

The Flags at RLWYC fly at half mast in memory of Lloyd D. Brinkman, a summer resident at the Lake for more than 30
years and a long-time member of the Yacht Club, who passed away on July 4, 2015 at the age of 86. Lloyd, a Texan
who loved the Lake, passed on his passion for the area to his wife, children and grandchildren. While he was not a
sailor, Lloyd (also known as “Brink”) was an avid tennis player for many years and he loved fast and beautiful boats.
Many will remember the time he crashed his Italian speedboat into the rocks at Devil’s Gap to avoid a collision with a
slow-moving houseboat.
Lloyd is survived by his wife Kathleen, his daughter Pam Stone, his son Don, daughter-in-law Terri, step-son Alex Page,
and grandchildren Sabine Schaefers, Danielle Schaefers, Trace Brinkman, Truett Brinkman, Stella Stone, and Jack Stone.
The family asks those who knew Lloyd to share their favorite story or stories about him; please send them to mgimel@ktc.com.

The weather was perfect, and the course was well groomed for the 25th Annual Overwater Classic!
Thank you to all participants who navigated the challenging course while enjoying good company,
drinks and appetizers at some of the finest camps on the lake. Our hole hosts (see below) went above and beyond to ensure this was a
memorable 25th Anniversary year - thank you. A special round of applause for our Honourary Chairs Joan Richardson & Colin Ferguson. Sponsors this year include MolsonCoors, Banville & Jones and Gary Weinberg of 3 Seasons Landscaping. Linda Biggar, Will Konantz, Talia Thomson and their talented RLWYC staff made sure all of the Tee's were crossed rounding out a truly remarkable day.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE RLWYC OVERWATER CLASSIC
The Overwater Classic was created as a fundraiser to support RLWYC Programs. Initially considered ridiculous by the RLWYC Board, a
thick skinned group of organizers took on the challenge to bring the event to life...and a quarter of a century later...we're still playing.
No one really knows the exact amount raised, but safe to say we are well past the $125,000 mark. Initially, the challenge was to hit a
ball from Jim and Shirley Richardson's (now Thomson's) to Gourlay's Island (now Thorlakson's) without using a golf club. The bet, $100
and a 40 of Rye. Baseball bats, cricket bats, tennis racquets were all tried...with no success. History states the Honourable James A.
Richardson won the bet. After a few years of failed attempts, 8 other holes were added and the Overwater Classic, as we know it today, came into being.
