CENTRAL PIEDMONT COMMUNITY COLLEGE | Building a Global Workforce Annual Report 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 CENTRAL PIEDMONT COMMUNITY COLLEGE | Serving our community for 50 years—and counting. Graduation Day, 2011 Message from the President Dr. Tony Zeiss “While CPCC remembers and celebrates its first 50 years, in no way do we consider our first half-century to be the College’s golden years.” When Central Piedmont Community College opened its doors in 1963, we and other community colleges across the nation were breaking new ground. Community colleges were asked to be innovative in finding new ways to educate and train adults from ages 18 to 60 for careers in manufacturing, the trades and emerging technologies, such as computers. CPCC has never ceased being innovative and entrepreneurial. The College always has endeavored to meet the ever-changing needs of Mecklenburg County residents, businesses and industries. Given this history, it’s fitting that during CPCC’s 50th year the College has taken the lead in fostering discussion and action in driving the Charlotte region to develop a new, global economic vision. On February 21, 2013, business, education and community leaders participated in the second Global Competitiveness Summit hosted by CPCC. Building on the success of our August 2012 global summit, the second event focused on what competitive advantages are needed by the region to increase global trade and prosper in the world market. UNC Charlotte and key employers in emerging business and manufacturing sectors. CPCC’s Small Business Center will maintain our focus on cultivating the entrepreneurial community and stimulating local jobs by implementing strategies that meet the needs of aspiring entrepreneurs and existing businesses. The College will continue to develop advanced manufacturing training programs certified by industry. Finally, CPCC will ensure international companies know we welcome them, and we are prepared to meet their specific workforce needs. The summit participants responded to a series of survey questions and agreed our region needs strategic and decisive action in the following areas: While CPCC remembers and celebrates our first 50 years, in no way do we consider our first half-century to be the College’s golden years. We know CPCC’s most important work lies before us. Our efforts to make the Charlotte region a center for advanced manufacturing and global commerce will resonate throughout the next 50 years and beyond. • Workforce development and education; • Entrepreneurship and small business development; • Advanced manufacturing; • Transportation and logistics; and • Research in all of the above areas. There is no time to waste. We must move our vision into plans for action that increase the region’s global presence and make it a hub of global commerce. We must measure our success by the development of people and jobs. The creation and recruitment of new, sustainable jobs is our goal and greatest indicator of success. Thank you for your continued support of CPCC. Together we’re making Mecklenburg County an even better place to live, work and follow one’s dreams. Sincerely, Dr. Tony Zeiss President How will we create and attract these jobs? We’ll succeed by providing and preparing the best-skilled workers in the nation, helping businesses and entrepreneurs become successful in global trade, and integrating manufacturing and logistics. CPCC will play an important role in making this region the center of global commerce. Pitts, Chairman CPCC Board of Trustees Likewise, the board and I are grateful for the tremendous and abiding support the College receives from throughout Mecklenburg County. The support of the Mecklenburg County Commission, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, the Charlotte Regional Partnership, our business and industry partners, multiple 3 CPCC expands Harper Campus CPCC completed a $9-million construction and renovation project at its Harper Campus in October. The College added 34,422 square feet of new construction and renovated 20,752 square feet of existing space at this southwest campus location. CPCC used restored funds originally earmarked under a 2005 Mecklenburg County bond referendum to grow its Harper Campus. Following 12 months of construction, led by Rodgers, the Harper Campus is now home to 11 new classrooms needed to grow the campus’s general education offerings; a new carpentry, masonry, and blueprint reading classroom, to enhance the capabilities of its Crowder Construction Institute; and a new walk-in bookstore and expanded parking area, to keep pace with the campus’s expanding student body. Dr. Tony Zeiss and wife Beth attend an open house event at Harper Campus with Katherine Harper. The campus renovated several other spaces as well. The Non-Destructive Examination, Welding Technology, Electrical Systems Technology and Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration programs received equipment upgrades to help instructors better train students on today’s emerging technologies. In addition, the campus expanded its Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology program to accommodate new graphic arts equipment, printing rooms and classroom space. The changes significantly increase the program’s student capacity. d CPCC hosts two Global Competitiveness Summits The opening of a major intermodal facility at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, combined with the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2014, will significantly affect trade routes across the globe and present significant entrepreneurial, manufacturing and transportation opportunities for the Charlotte region. Ships from Asia will be able to reach the east coast of the United States more quickly and directly. This change to the world’s shipping patterns is expected to position Charlotte as a unique intermodal transportation Seth D. Harris, acting U.S. secretary of labor, speaks at the Global Competitiveness Summit at Harris Campus. 4 center and leader in global commerce and manufacturing. To prepare the region’s key decision makers for this global shift, CPCC hosted two Global Competitiveness Summits, in August 2012 and in February 2013, to discuss what opportunities exist for the region to create, make and move products across the global marketplace. In attendance were Seth D. Harris, acting U.S. secretary of labor; Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx; Sharon Decker, N.C. commerce secretary; Peter Ammon German ambassador to the United States; Bob Morgan, president and CEO of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce; and others. Both events successfully engaged Charlottearea stakeholders in developing strategies and partnerships that will allow the region to grow a robust and resilient advanced manufacturing economy, workforce pipeline and transportation infrastructure. d Building a Global Workforce CPCC, Siemens receive Distinguished Partners in Excellence award In February 2013, the State Board of Community Colleges awarded CPCC and Siemens Energy of Charlotte, N.C., its Distinguished Partners in Excellence Award. The award honors an exemplary employer, business or industry group that has demonstrated a commitment to the professional development of its employees and/or the development of North Carolina’s workforce through its partnership efforts with one or more of the state’s 58 community colleges. CPCC, IHK Karlsruhe honor first class of German industry certification programs During a special ceremony on May 8, CPCC and IHK Karlsruhe, a German regional chamber of industry and commerce, recognized the first students nearing completion of CPCC’s IHKcertified job-training programs. The program was created as the result of a cooperative education agreement between CPCC and IHK Karlsruhe that made CPCC the first U.S. community college to offer IHK-certified job-training programs. The partnership between CPCC and Siemens began more than 12 years ago and has evolved to include many levels of each organization. Over the years, Siemens has collaborated with CPCC on a variety of customized training projects – administered by the College – to train its workforce in the areas of pre-employment, new employee orientation and specialized classes. As a result of the partnership’s success, CPCC has extended services to Siemens Global, the company’s parent company in Germany. CPCC recently collaborated with the company’s global offices to become certified as the first N.C. community college to offer the Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification program. The curriculum associated with this specialized track is being integrated into the College’s current Mechatronics Engineering Technology program, allowing CPCC to offer the certification to local companies, students and apprentices. d Prof. Hans-Peter Mengele The program’s curriculum gives CPCC students the opportunity to take classes that lead to IHK-endorsed certificates. These German certifications will make CPCC students and the Charlotte region more attractive to German and other European companies. “As President Obama has repeatedly emphasized, a well-educated, well-trained workforce is a fundamental requirement for success in the global economy of the 21st century,” said Prof. Hans-Peter Mengele, CEO, IHK Karlsruhe. “In this spirit, our collaboration with CPCC in Charlotte will support and strengthen the many German companies already located in the Carolinas and will further prepare American workers to take full advantage of new opportunities in the job market.” Currently, there are 58 German companies based in or near Karlsruhe that have Charlotte-area operations. Overall, there are approximately 200 German companies with facilities in the Charlotte region and about 500 in the Carolinas. The 200 German companies in the Charlotte region employ approximately 2,800 people. d CPCC student receives 2013 Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award Zaman Rashid, a student at CPCC, received the prestigious 2013 Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. The recognition is the highest honor given for student leadership by the North Carolina Community College System. Rashid received the award and a check for $1,000 during a special Academic Excellence Award ceremony at CPCC in May. Sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents, the award honors students who demonstrate leadership on a statewide level. Rashid currently serves as president of CPCC’s academic honor society – Phi Theta Kappa – and has received accolades for his service work as a translator and mentor with Solace for the Children, an organization that provides medical care, education and leadership development opportunities for children in war-torn countries. Rashid first came to the U.S. as a patient with Solace. “Zaman embodies the qualities of a great student leader,” adds Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. “He expects the best from himself, he encourages others to be at their best, he works to serve the larger community and he is well-respected among peers and faculty.” d 5 CPCC student named 2013 Coca-Cola New Century Scholar Riyam Al Ghrary, a student at CPCC, has been named a 2013 Coca-Cola New Century Scholar. The program, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, CocaCola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges, honors outstanding community college students for their academic excellence and outstanding achievements outside the classroom. Riyam Al Ghrary Fifty community college students were chosen to be a Coca-Cola New Century Scholar; Al Ghrary was selected as the highest scoring student in North Carolina. As a result, CPCC was recognized at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention and Al Ghrary will receive a $2,000 scholarship. “Riyam draws from her love of learning and her innate intelligence to succeed,” said Amanda Capobianchi, associate dean of Student Life at CPCC. “She is among our most active students on campus and is an excellent student who sets very high standards for herself. Her self-discipline is unmatched and I am extremely confident in her success for the future.” In addition to being a member of CPCC’s PTK Chapter, Al Ghrary is vice president of the Student Government Association; has completed the College’s Student Leadership Academy; is an active participant in a number of CPCC servicelearning projects; and is a dedicated tutor, helping fellow students in math. d CPCC students participate in Service-Learning During 2012, approximately 2,500 students donated 28,185 hours of service to the greater Charlotte-Mecklenburg area through CPCC’s Service-Learning initiative. CPCC’s Service-Learning Center’s efforts are highly valued by community agencies, non-profits, public schools, retirement homes and local government. Examples of these partnerships include: • Habitat for Humanity Critical Home Repair: Students in the Sustainable Technologies program conducted energy audits and helped weatherize the homes of low-income homeowners served by Habitat. • Charlotte Public Tree Fund and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water: Students in geology courses researched the importance of planting trees along the waterways and recruited volunteers for the annual Creek ReLeaf event, during which more than 2,000 trees were planted. 6 CPCC students giving back to the community • Project Life: Students from the Health Science Division provided educational programs on bone marrow transplants and conducted a Project Life bone marrow drive, during which more than 300 individuals signed up to become part of the National Bone Marrow Registry. Data collected and analyzed by the CPCC Planning and Research department indicate that Service-Learning students are more likely to earn better grades, return to school in subsequent semesters and graduate with a degree or diploma. d Building a Global Workforce CMS, CPCC student graduates with two degrees Sierra Easter, a senior at Cato Middle College High School (CMCHS) on CPCC’s Cato Campus, graduated in May 2013 with two degrees – a high school diploma from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) and an associate degree from CPCC. Sierra Easter CMCHS is the first and only CMS middle-college program that provides CMS high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to earn college credit hours while still in high school, at no cost to them or their families. It is also part of the Career & College Promise program which provides free dual enrollment opportunities for eligible N.C. high school students. Sierra graduated from CMCHS in May 2013 with 64 college credit hours, making her the only graduating Mecklenburg County high school senior in 2013 to accomplish this goal. As a result, she enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill this fall as a college junior, with no college debt, a jump-start on her continued education and a passion to succeed in future challenges. d In memoriam As CPCC celebrates its 50th anniversary year, it seems appropriate to remember one of the College’s founding fathers – the late Dr. Richard Hagemeyer who passed away on December 26, 2012. And while more than 25 years have passed since Dr. Hagemeyer’s retirement from CPCC in 1986, his impact on the College can still be found within its walls and performance venues. Dr. Hagemeyer was CPCC’s first president, leading Mecklenburg County’s community college from 1963 to 1986. During his tenure, the College expanded its footprint from a single building on Elizabeth Avenue serving 1,600 students, to a thriving higher education institution with 33 acres, 24 buildings and 54,000 students. That’s because many of the programs launched during his presidency continue to thrive today. These include the College’s Small Business Center, Corporate and Continuing Education, eLearning classes, CPCC Summer Theatre and literacy courses. And, so, the College celebrates its golden anniversary this year, Today, honoring the CPCC is one memory of Dr. of the largest Hagemeyer – a community visionary who colleges changed the in North foundation of Carolina. It has CPCC and six campuses how the arts, located academic and Dr. Richard Hagemeyer throughout job training Mecklenburg County, offers more than 300 programs are offered to Mecklenburg degree, diploma and certification programs, County’s many residents. d and serves 70,000 students a year. CPCC launches Career Coach Earlier this year, CPCC launched Career Coach, a free online tool that allows local residents and CPCC students to explore potential careers. The tool may be accessed by visiting www.cpcc.edu/careercoach. By conducting a simple keyword search, visitors are able to learn about the employment prospects of a variety of career fields. The tool provides local employment statistics in real-time and is customized to CPCC’s geographic region. Site visitors can view detailed wage estimates and up-to-date job postings associated with careers, connect to CPCC programs that match their specific job search, search for similar jobs, and identify skills gaps they need to fill in order to transition into a new career. Users can also search for careers based on the College’s training programs or by the program or major that interests them most. In addition to the many features mentioned above, the Career Coach tool also includes a built-in résumé builder that can help students and job seekers quickly and efficiently create an up-to-date résumé that highlights their key skills and job experience. d 7 Health program grads score well on national exams In 2012, CPCC graduates in Cardiovascular Technology, Dental Hygiene, Dental Assisting, Medical Assisting, Physical Therapist Assistant, Cytotechnology, Respiratory Therapy, and Substance Abuse earned 100-percent passing rates on their national certification examinations. Students completing these health care programs must earn passing scores on specific certification exams to start their careers in their chosen fields. Cardiovascular Technology These 100-percent scores reflect the rigor of CPCC’s health programs and the effort put forth by CPCC faculty and students. Graduates from all of CPCC’s health care programs bring knowledge, skills and professionalism to their careers, helping ensure high-quality health care for Mecklenburg County residents. d CPCC creates Apprenticeship Charlotte CPCC announced the launch of Apprenticeship Charlotte in 2012, a new career-training program CPCC will customize to meet the specific needs of individual companies. CPCC created Apprenticeship Charlotte by drawing on its experience with the successful Apprenticeship 2000 program, which focuses on high school students and serves about a dozen European manufacturing companies in the Charlotte region. Through Apprenticeship Charlotte, CPCC offers multiple apprenticeship models, including associate degree, diploma and certificate options with multiple entry points. The goal is to make apprenticeships more flexible to meet employer needs. “For centuries, apprenticeships have been an excellent way for employers to build a talent pipeline,” explained Richard Zollinger, CPCC vice president for learning and workforce development. “Apprenticeships can be invaluable when permanent positions are available but skilled talent is difficult to find, when a company has plans for future expansion, when current employees need retraining and skills upgrades, and when goals for diversity have been hard to achieve.” Two local and national workforce development trends solidified CPCC’s decision to develop Apprenticeship Charlotte. First, there is a well-documented skills gap or shortage of trained workers for high-tech manufacturing jobs and other technical fields. Second, most companies Representatives from the N.C. Department of Labor recognize HAWE North America, Inc., as an official Apprenticeship Charlotte employer. HAWE is one of the first companies to connect to CPCC’s Apprenticeship Charlotte program. want job candidates who already have some level of experience. “CPCC, through Apprenticeship Charlotte, will work with individual companies to create an apprenticeship model that meets their needs,” Zollinger said. “Some employers might be interested in training high school students; others might want traditional age college students in associate degree or diploma programs. There could be other companies that want people with previous experience or incumbent workers who can be trained quickly in a new process or to use a new technology.” d CPCC launches Corporate Learning Center Mecklenburg County businesses and industries looking for help with employee learning and development now have a single point of contact at CPCC. The College, in 2012, established its Corporate Learning Center, with staff based at the Harris Campus. “The Corporate Learning Center is CPCC’s gateway for serving the wide range of learning and development needs of businesses and organizations in Mecklenburg County,” explained Mary Vickers-Koch, CPCC dean of business and industry learning. “The College’s great span of learning, expertise and experience 8 make CPCC a uniquely positioned workforce development resource to meet the performance and organizational needs of companies.” Based on these and other discussions, the Corporate Learning Center will develop a customized program to meet the business or organization’s specific needs. d CPCC’s Corporate Learning Center partners with businesses and organizations to identify and understand their specific employee learning and development needs. The process poses a number of assessment questions, including: • What are your business plans? • What improvements in employee competencies do you want to achieve? • What behaviors do you want to impact? Entrance to Corporate Learning Center Building a Global Workforce CPCC’s Culinary Arts program earns “exemplary” grade The American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACFEF) Accrediting Commission identified CPCC’s associate degree program in Culinary Arts as “exemplary” in 2012. The CPCC Culinary Arts program is the only associate degree program in North Carolina and one of just 60 in the nation to earn the exemplary designation. The Culinary Arts program at CPCC qualified as an exemplary program after undergoing the process of renewing its accreditation. CPCC met or exceeded nationally recognized ACFEF standards for eligibility, program mission and goals, organization and administration, faculty and staff, curriculum, facilities, student services, and internal assessments. “Being declared an exemplary program by the American Culinary Federation is a clear indication of the quality of culinary arts at CPCC and the hard work and devotion of our faculty and staff,” said Bob Boll, director of CPCC’s Hospitality Education Division. “Our primary goal is student success and preparing students for great careers in the restaurant and hospitality industry.” d CPCC creates The Center for Energy Training Companies within the Charlotte region’s energy cluster now have a partner in developing and enhancing their talent pipelines to meet their current and future workforce needs. CPCC established The Center for Energy Training in 2013 to help ensure workforce development needs are met in this important economic and employment sector. CPCC created The Center for Energy Training with in-depth input from several employers in the energy sector, including Siemens, CB&I, Duke Energy, Piedmont Natural Gas, 02 Energies, Celgard, ABB, Carotek, Coalogix, Areva, Parsons, URS, Westinghouse, Zachary, Lime Energy, Toshiba, Abundant Power, Crowder Construction, and Balfour Beatty Construction. “The ability and success of the Charlotte region’s economy to sustain and grow its energy sector will depend, in large part, on how well we develop talent pipelines to ensure employers have a reliable source of qualified and highly skilled workers,” explained Richard Zollinger, vice president for learning and workforce development at CPCC. “Through the partnerships we seek to establish with The Center for Energy Training, we can help secure the viability of energy-sector employers for years to come.” Bill Heitman, director of The Center for Energy Training Bill Heitman has returned to CPCC to serve as the College’s executive energy advisor and director of The Center for Energy Training. Prior to retiring from CPCC in 2009, Heitman served as executive director of learning services, representing the College to the business community. d CPCC adds AAS program in pharmacy technology CPCC welcomed the first students to its new, two-year associate degree Pharmacy Technology program in August 2012. The new program is training students to become pharmacy technicians who work closely with pharmacists in hospitals, drug and grocery stores and other medical facilities. Pharmacy technicians help prepare and distribute medications. In pharmacy settings, pharm techs screen prescription orders for accuracy, prepare and sometimes mix medications, perform various calculations and use technology to maintain patient records. The program will help meet a growing need for pharm techs in the Mecklenburg County area. d 9 College returns WTVI to full-PBS programming, hires new GM In October 2012, CPCC returned newly acquired public TV station WTVI to a full weekday and prime time schedule of PBS programming. The move marked CPCC’s relaunch of the station and its rebranding as PBS Charlotte. Prior to CPCC taking over WTVI’s FCC license, the station for several years had shown only a partial schedule of PBS shows. CPCC announced the programming change and new PBS Charlotte name at a news conference and through a multi-media advertising campaign. In May 2013, CPCC hired TV veteran Amy Burkett to be the new PBS Charlotte general manager. Burkett came to Charlotte from Bethlehem, Pa., where she was executive vice president and station manager of WLVT-TV PBS39. During her tenure at PBS39, Burkett and her team earned four national public television awards, eight Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Awards, 28 regional Emmy nominations, six Emmys, and one regional Edward R. Murrow Award. d CPCC turns 50 CPCC officially kicked off its 50th anniversary celebration in January. The College has evolved from a one-building higher education institution on Elizabeth Ave., offering about a dozen programs to 1,600 students, to one of the Southeast’s largest community colleges that serves more than 70,000 students a year and offers more than 300 academic degree, corporate and business training and personal interest programs on six campuses. of service – during the 2013 calendar year. To date more than: • 75 employees, retirees and students have signed the pledge. For more information about CPCC’s 50th anniversary celebration, visit www.cpcc.edu/50years. d • 95 organizations have been supported. • 855 hours of service have been volunteered. “For almost 50 years, CPCC has maintained its tradition of being an educational resource to local residents, helping individuals achieve their personal and professional goals,’” said Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. “We are committed to being the community college Mecklenburg County needs and deserves, today and tomorrow.” In recognition of the College’s golden anniversary, CPCC students, faculty, staff and retirees signed a Year of Service pledge to give 50 hours of service – or any amount Employees enjoy the 50th anniversary celebration, which included a timeline of the College’s 50-year milestones. Dr. Tony Zeiss travels to Germany to build business connections CPCC President Dr. Tony Zeiss spent a week in Germany in June 2013 to strengthen the College’s and Charlotte region’s connections with German corporate and government leaders. Dr. Zeiss’ primary mission was to support the U.S. Embassy’s Strategic Speakers Program through presentations and personal 10 participation in a number of events in Berlin and southern Germany. He was invited by the U.S. Embassy as a nationally recognized U.S. community college leader on workforce development and training issues and CPCC’s pioneering role in the adaptation and integration of German models and best practices. The theme of Dr. Zeiss’ formal presentations in Germany was “Global Competitiveness and the Importance of Skilled Workers.” He also used the opportunity to meet personally with CPCC’s key educational, training and business partners. These included the Siemens Academy in Berlin, Karlsruhe Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Karlsruhe, and FESTO AG and FESTO Didactic in Esslingen and Denkendorf. d Letter from the Foundation President Dear Friends: On behalf of the Central Piedmont Community College Foundation, please accept our deep gratitude for your support of the College and its students. In the 2012-13 fiscal year, donors such as you made gifts totaling more than $6.9 million. We are most grateful to individuals, corporations and foundations for their generosity. As public funding for the College continues to decrease, your contributions enable the College to fulfill its mission of providing outstanding education and career-training opportunities to the citizens of our region. Your support comes at an important time in the history of CPCC. In 2013-14, the College is celebrating its 50th year of service to Charlotte-Mecklenburg. In conjunction with this milestone, we are conducting the “Legacy and Promise” campaign to position the College to embark on its second 50 years. With a goal of $30 million, it is the largest fundraising effort in the College’s history. With your assistance, more than $24.9 million has been raised. Your continued support will help us achieve the campaign’s ambitious goal. Many thanks for all you have done for CPCC and for all you will do in the future. Sincerely, Thomas E. Jim’s son, Richard, now at the helm of Northwestern Mutual, will continue his father’s legacy of service and philanthropy at CPCC. Richard was recently elected to the CPCC President’s Advisory Council. d Building a Global Workforce Howard R. Levine Foundation gives $500,000 to CPCC In 2012, the Howard R. Levine Foundation of Charlotte, N.C., made two grants totaling $500,000 to CPCC. The first, a $100,000-grant, enabled the College to hire additional part-time faculty members to meet the need for expanded class offerings created by enrollment growth. “Thanks to the Howard R. Levine Foundation’s generous support, the College has been able to add classes in highdemand core courses, which are needed by students to advance their academic progress and career training,” said Dr. Tony Zeiss, CPCC president. “The Foundation’s grant has helped CPCC address a pressing need and ensure opportunities and access for our students.” The Foundation’s second grant of $400,000 established the Howard R. Levine Veterans Scholarship Fund and the Howard R. Levine Veterans Resource Center at CPCC’s Levine Campus in Matthews. The scholarship fund will provide much-needed financial assistance to U.S. military veterans who lack GI Bill benefits or whose benefits are inadequate to meet their educational costs. The Levine Veterans Resource Center will provide counseling, academic advising and other Fonville endowment receives second gift The Charles L. & Doris M. Fonville Foundation made a gift this year to the Fonville Scholarship at CPCC, doubling the size of this permanent endowment established in 2008 to provide assistance to CPCC students with financial need who are enrolled at the College on a full-time basis. Tiffanie Briggs, 18, a Fonville Scholar this year, said, “To be a Fonville Scholar is someone who puts in a lot of work . . . someone who studies night and day. I plan to receive my associate degree in Arts and then transfer to a four-year college. The Fonville Scholarship helps me focus on my studies so I can work hard to keep the scholarship and have the funds to pay for tuition and books. A total of 4,888 students at CPCC received scholarships in the 2012–2013 academic year. Scholarships continue to be among the College’s greatest need. d “To Mr. and Mrs. Fonville, I would like to say thank you so much. I really appreciate all you have done so students like me can get an education at CPCC; you make it easier for us to attend school.” “It’s a hand-up,” said Mr. Fonville, president of Fonville and Company and a member of the CPCC Foundation board of directors. “I want to help deserving individuals.” Tiffanie Briggs, Fonville Scholar 13 (L to R) Ralph Pitts, Beth Zeiss, Dr. Tony Zeiss, Bob Moss Alumnus makes gift to name Engineering Technology program Bob Moss, a CPCC alumnus and construction management executive in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., made a gift to CPCC in February to support CPCC’s Engineering Technology program. In recognition of Moss’ gift, the College named the Bob L. Moss Civil Engineering Technology Program. Moss’ contribution marks the largest gift commitment by a CPCC graduate in the College’s 50-year history. He earned an associate degree in Construction Technology from CPCC in 1968. “It is a tremendous privilege for me to support and honor this College,” Moss said. “I am proud to have my name on the Civil Engineering Technology program. If this College had not been available to me in 1966, along with the affordable education it provided, I would have missed out on a wonderful, exciting, rewarding and successful construction career.” Upon graduating from CPCC, Moss embarked on a highly successful career. He held several positions of increasing responsibility within the construction field before becoming president of Centex Construction Companies, the largest domestic builder in the United States, in 1980. There, Moss oversaw projects ranging in size from $5 million to $500 million; managed more than 400 active projects across 25 states and 20 geographic locations; and constructed commercial structures to serve clients representing industries such as health care, education, hospitality and more. His professional efforts garnered national recognition – Fortune Magazine named the company one of the “Most Admired Engineering Construction Firms in the Nation” for 2000, 2001 and 2003. In 2004, he founded Moss & Associates, a firm that provides design-build, general construction, construction management and pre-construction consulting services to clients throughout the U.S., Bahamas and Caribbean. Within three years of opening, the organization was named the “Fastest Growing Company” by South Florida Business Journal and was ranked among the largest contractors in southeastern Florida. While the company is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., it is expanding its presence in the Carolinas, operating offices in both Raleigh, N.C., and Greenville, S.C. “We are most grateful to Bob for his generous support of CPCC and proud of his many accomplishments as a CPCC alumnus,” said Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. “Thanks to his gift, our Civil Engineering Technology program students will receive a quality education that equips them with the latest industry advances and techniques, giving them a competitive advantage in today’s workforce.” d Bank of America supports Pathways program and U.S. military veterans In May 2013, Bank of America Foundation announced a grant of $100,000 to support the College’s Pathways to Careers Program and assist U. S. military veterans. Pathways to Careers Grant funds for the Pathways program will assist the College in providing academic, social and occupational training to prepare chronically unemployed and underemployed individuals to enter the workforce. Program participants are categorized as low-income students challenged by multiple educational and career-development barriers. The program is intended to prepare students for employment and to lead self-sufficient lives. U.S. military veterans Bank of America grant funds will also assist U. S. military veterans pursuing educational and career-preparation opportunities at 14 CPCC. In 2010, the College established its first Veterans Resource Center to respond to a significant increase in veteran enrollment. The Center provides veterans with support services, including individual and group counseling and advising. Specifically, grant funds will help employ a counselor for the Center to assist veterans in choosing programs of study and training that lead to meaningful career paths; the counselor also assists veterans in identifying employment opportunities, writing résumés and preparing for interviews. A college-wide survey of veterans indicates that expedited preparation for employment is the primary reason veterans enroll at CPCC. d Student and veteran, Shasta Resper Building a Global Workforce Bragg Financial Advisors sponsors WTVI PBS Charlotte and Sporting Clays Classic Where can someone glean an in-depth look at legendary broadcasters such as Doug Mayes, Ty Boyd and Hattie Leeper; the Mallard Creek barbecue; Charlotte textiles; Revolutionary War hero Captain Jack; Charlotte’s retail history; and more? The answer: WTVI PBS Charlotte’s “Trail of History” series. In April 2013, Bragg Financial Advisors became an underwriter of the station’s “Trail of History” with a portion of its $100,000 gift to CPCC. Acknowledging this gift, College President Dr. Tony Zeiss said, “PBS Charlotte is an essential community resource that connects people in the heart of the Carolinas through educational programming, community outreach and production services. The ‘Trail of History’ consistently ranks as a favorite program, and we are grateful to Bragg Financial for helping underwrite this series. It’s a valuable gift to the community.” A portion of Bragg Financial Advisors’ gift will also provide a multi-year presenting sponsorship of the College’s annual Sporting Clays Classic. One of the premier shooting events in the region, the Classic marked its 10th anniversary this year. Cumulatively, this event has raised more than $1 million in cash and in-kind support for CPCC. The Sporting Clays Classic supports CPCC Veteran Services, helping military veterans enrolled at the College transition to civilian life by providing them with the resources they need to achieve academic and vocational goals. Proceeds also support the College’s Public Safety Department, providing basic training, skills maintenance and advanced training to Charlotte’s community of first responders. This year’s Sporting Clays Classic enjoyed record levels of participation; 256 shooters competed in two rounds. The Sporting Clays featured the Gnat, a fast-flying, radiocontrolled drone that emits a puff of smoke when hit by a lucky or skilled shooter. The CPCC Sporting Clays Classic is the first sporting clays event in the region to host the Gnat. “There is a need in each one of us to give back something to those who take care of us. To the men and women coming back from overseas who gave by putting their lives on the line. And to those first responders who give to us each and every day, we want to help them in any way we can. The proceeds from this Shoot help us do that,” said Tod Thorne, chair of the Sporting Clays Classic committee. While a college graduate and retired executive of Piedmont Natural Gas, Parr has taken numerous courses at CPCC. He says, “I’ve taken a lot of the liberal arts courses the College offers.” Parr is a life-long learner. “CPCC has so much to offer,” continues Parr. “You can prepare for a career or simply learn about a subject of interest or a hobby. It is an innovative environment for everyone involved.” In December, right before the holidays, Parr began talking about setting up a gift annuity for his wife, Mary Dee, as a Christmas present for her. He would establish the annuity with a gift to the College, the CPCC Foundation would invest the gift, and his wife would receive a guaranteed income for life. Parr would receive a tax deduction at the time of the gift, and a portion of his wife’s income each year would be tax-deductible. At the end of her life, the funds in the annuity would revert Parr is a volunteer who gives countless hours to the community. Previously, he was a Stephen minister at Providence United Methodist Church. He drives the elderly and others to doctor appointments; and for almost 12 years, he tutored students in CPCC’s ABLE Program. In the midst of this, Parr has given 350 donations of blood and platelets through the American Red Cross. Over the years, Parr and his wife have provided scholarships for students attending CPCC, and in 2006, they established the Mary W. and Wilton L. Parr Fellows Program to recognize teaching excellence. They are members of the CPCC Legacy Society. “CPCC is fortunate to have Mr. and Mrs. Parr as donors and friends of the College. They are a model of generosity,” said Brenda Lea, executive director, Institutional Advancement, CPCC Foundation. d Wilton and Mary Dee Parr 16 to CPCC. You will recall that December 2012 was a time of much discussion about taxes in Washington. The gift did not come to fruition. Before her untimely passing on April 4, 2012, she was employed as a paralegal by Stiles, Byrum & Horne Law Firm in Charlotte. In remembrance of Vickie, her parents, Robert “Bob” and Marilynn Bowler, and family members, Laura and Mark Whitley, Julie and David Duke, Elizabeth Bowler, and Thomas Bowler, have established the Victoria Bowler Memorial Scholarship at the College. This scholarship is for deserving students preparing for a career in the paralegal profession. Vickie Bowler and highlighting women leaders from a variety of professions and fields. In addition, the Fund will provide a scholarship to a CPCC female student who demonstrates leadership abilities. In a written statement, current CPCC President Dr. Tony Zeiss said, “This is exciting and will be a tremendous addition to the life of the College and the community. It is a wonderful way to link Ruth’s outstanding career with current students at CPCC.” d A smart, witty and lovely young woman with an amazing commitment to caring for others, Vickie was passionate about her volunteer work at Levine Children’s Hospital, MakeA-Wish, Special Olympics/Camp SOAR, the homeless shelter, senior citizens Bingo, and Kids First. In addition to her volunteer commitments, Vickie enjoyed horseback riding, golf, tennis and working out, finding joy in everything she did. Many friends of Vickie’s and her family have generously supported this scholarship. In memory of CPCC administrator Gay Dr. Melvin L. Gay Jr. began working for CPCC in 1969 as a counselor, advising students on their career objectives and goals. Since that time, he held a variety of leadership roles at the College, including associate vice president for enrollment and student services, a role he held until his passing on February 3, 2012, at age 67. At Dr. Gay’s request, memorial gifts were directed to the CPCC Foundation. The Dr. Mel Gay Scholarship was established this year for deserving students attending CPCC at its Levine Campus located in Matthews, where Dr. Gay spent the last years of his career. During Dr. Gay’s 43-year tenure at CPCC, he took every opportunity to demonstrate his commitment to students, staff and returning military veterans, making significant contributions to their success. His colleagues appreciated Dr. Gay’s quiet Dr. Ruth Shaw and Dr. Tony Zeiss leadership, calming disposition and generous support. Dr. Gay had the ability to make everyone around him feel as though they could accomplish anything. In 2013, Dr. Gay was posthumously awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the most prestigious award presented by the Governor of North Carolina to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state and their communities. Quickly. Effectively. The transformation is incredible. Students, faculty and staff, friends and supporters marvel at what is today one of the most extraordinary community colleges in the country—a place where 70,000 students each year receive career training on six campuses throughout Mecklenburg County. The College’s growth couldn’t happen without significant financial support from generous benefactors. The College has raised almost $25 million toward its $30-million 1 “Legacy and Promise” campaign, launched in January 2012. The campaign is believed to be the largest campaign ever for a community college and is scheduled to culminate in June 2014 when the College celebrates its 50th anniversary of service. Throughout this annual report you have read about the campaign’s donors. Collectively, these individuals, families, corporations, foundations and many other donors have helped CPCC with significant resources toward the College’s “Legacy and Promise” campaign for scholarships, additional faculty positions, workforce development initiatives and other programs. These gifts help the College achieve its goals of becoming the national leader in workforce development and providing generations of students with an outstanding education and extraordinary career training in an innovative environment with remarkable people. “I’m optimistic our 50th anniversary campaign will be successful,” said Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of CPCC. “The future of CPCC is brighter than ever!” We are grateful to those who hosted a reception in their homes as a part of CPCC’s $30-million “Legacy and Promise” campaign. More than 85 events were held on four of the College’s six campuses during the eight-day festival. Guests included Ron Rash, poet, author and winner of CPCC’s Irene B. Honeycutt Distinguished Lecturer Award. Students and members of the public attended Rash’s presentations at no cost. Rash, author of the 2008 novel and New York Times bestseller, “Serena,” read from his latest work, a short story collection, “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” Sensoria and CPCC also welcomed inspirational poet Li-Young Lee; young adult historical fiction writer, Alan Armstrong; artists Amy Bagwell and Kit Kube; Charlotte’s Jewish Film Festival; Mothering Across Continents; Digital Film People; and Tosco Music Party. The festival featured the College’s Bechtler on Campus – a symphonic concert pairing visual art and music of the 20th and 21st centuries that partners CPCC with the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art; CPCC Opera Theatre’s “Dialogues of the Carmelites;” CPCC Theatre’s “Fences;” and an exhibit of the Joe Bonham Project, a showcase of artwork by seasoned combat artists, well-known illustrators and college students who are committed to sharing the experiences of veterans. d Sensoria would not be possible without the support of donors and sponsors. It is especially meaningful to have the Turner family as an integral part of the College.” d Student works in welding lab at the James A. Turner Center for Welding Technology. 22 A Leader in The Arts Performing Arts Society CPCC’s Performing Arts Program depends on the generosity of donors and on ticket sales to provide quality family entertainment at affordable prices. The Performing Arts Society was established in 2010 to simplify the giving process for donors who are interested in supporting the College’s three major performing arts programs – CPCC Theatre, Opera Theatre and Summer Theatre. Performing Arts Society members can sustain all of these programs with their annual gift. Performing Arts Society contributors also enjoy priority ticket sales and other donor benefits. For more information about the Performing Arts Society, please contact the CPCC Foundation at 704.330.6869. The CPCC Performing Arts Program is most grateful to the following society contributors: Premiere Circle ($10,000 and over) Sarah Belk Gambrell Encore Circle ($5,000-$9,999) Dr. Elizabeth & Mr. James C. Named for Colonel J. Norman Pease, head of the architectural firm that developed the College’s first master plan and an avid supporter of CPCC during its early years, Pease Auditorium was home to the College’s first drama productions (1970-1994). Colonel Pease died in 1987, and the College remains grateful for his vision, leadership and guidance. It is with a historical and appreciative nod that the College recognizes our Pease Auditorium benefactors, donors who made our 2009-10 renovation possible and who help to maintain this piece of Charlotte history. Today, Pease Auditorium, a beautiful, elliptical-shaped auditorium, plays host to performances for audiences of 400. For a gift of $500 or more, seat benefactors have their names or the name of a family member or friend inscribed on a Pease Auditorium plaque permanently displayed in the building. To become a Pease Auditorium benefactor, please contact the CPCC Foundation at 704.330.6869. d Pease Auditorium Benefactors In Loving Memory of Carrie G. Allen Claudia W. Halton Theater seat benefactors are prominently and permanently recognized on a plaque in the Halton Theater. Proceeds from the Halton Theater Seat Campaign ensure the ongoing quality of the facility and its artistic programming. Some CPCC donors make a provision for gifts to be made to the College at their passing, or their families make the request. Other donors make gifts of appreciation in honor of someone who has been a vital part of their lives, for a birthday, anniversary, holiday or other notable occasion. Memorial and honor gifts are often an especially meaningful tribute. In Memory Of Charles Vance Abernethy Jr. Anonymous Nancy B. Pinkerton Carrie G.
