On the week-end she and her newly retired daughter do the “2 Mile Walk” video at home with Leslie Sansone. She claims that even though she fell down some stairs, except for a few bruises, she broke no bones because she had improved her muscles that protect the bones. Her daughter, Karen, says keeping up with her mom is a good way to keep the weight off that might come with retirement. We consider Winnie and Karen “model seniors” who know how much better life can be when you maintain a proper balance and strength through exercise. “We wish other people would join us indoors”, especially in the winter months when there is little yard work to do. Note all the possibilities that are offered at the various SCOPE sites for building a better body and when exercise is done to music it makes it fun, too. HEAP Applications Available at SCOPE The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program administered by the Ohio Department of Development’s Office of Community Service (OCS). It is designed to help eligible low-income Ohioans meet the high costs of home heating. If you are eligible for assistance, the amount of your one-time HEAP benefit wilI depend on federal funding levels, how many people live with you, total household income, and the primary fuel you use to heat your home. In most cases, the one-time benefit will be a credit applied to your energy bill by your utility company (or fuel vendor). Eligibility Requirements: Applications for the 2011-2012 Regular HEAP program will be accepted through May 31, 2012. The total household income of an applicant must be at or below 200 percent of the Fiscal Year 2011 federal poverty guidelines listed below: Size of Household 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Total Household Income 12 Months up to $21,780.00 $29,420.00 $37,060.00 $44,700.00 $52,340.00 $59,980.00 $67,620.00 $75,260.00 Page 3, The Senior Scope WINTER, 2012 From T H E SCOPE, Inc. of Trumbull County Annual Dinner Executive Director Janet E. Schweitzer The 92-year-old WWII survivor quoted in the Plain Dealer about his living through Dec. 7, 1941, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, scoffed, “ There’s no need to sit around and talk about that. It’s old stuff.” Of course following generations, in an effort to remember historical events without losing insight, make heroes of those who survived great catastrophes. Recently, I read a little quip, “I love history. I’d be more interested in you if you were dead.” Not necessarily true, but the point is that history does put great generalizations in place. Vice versa, some of the most meaningful moments for us may be to others pretty commonplace. All of us in the humankind chain have similar experiences and the most meaningful events of our private lives such as love and marriage, childhood tonsillitis, the first day of school, and funerals ring bells of familiarity, but are commonplace, and therefore not noteworthy to the vast circles of acquaintances, neighbors, and the family down the street who doesn’t know your name. Unless of course you are a tracker of trends who loves to see the humanness of the past among those who lived a different life- Generations style with no conveniences such as autos, running water, TV, radio, telephones, internet, etc. etc. etc. depending on the period. What makes these different periods of history interesting? Recently I read an article in the N YTimes 11/13/11 tracking differences in the decades of the young. This commentator, William Deresiewicz, said the young (20 somethings) in the 50’s as the beatniks, sought individual expression, loved jazz for its spontaneity, wrote folk songs, camped out in those big festivals, and sought to unify the world against corruption, racism, poor treatment of women, and war. During the 60’s love to the hippies was everything- the summer of love, and of course “All You Need is Love.” In the 70’s the young were rebellious as they sought peace, staging war protests, living “freely” in communes without conventional responsibilities. In the 80’s the young began to withdraw as the punks spoke about rage, telling everyone to get angry and then this slid into the 90’s Gen X, a time of slackers, apathy, angst, aimlessness, and pointlessness. It was a time to tell the world how rotten it all was. Now this author says, we have entered the CLEARVIEW LANTERN SUITES • ASSISTED LIVING FOR THE ELDERLY • ADULT DAY CARE • CONDO LIVING FOR AGE 55 AND OVER GROUP 596 Champion Ave. West Take Route 45 to Champion, head West on Champion Ave., approx 1/2 miles from the intersection on the right. 330-847-6800 era of the hipsters who make way for the next movement called the “bobos” or the blend between the commercial Bourgeoise blended with bohemian ideals. The quest for living the best of life means being commercially adept. Without a doubt the Occupy Wall Street effort was meant to point up the need for jobs, and commercial success because the generations ahead of them seem to be protected while the young are struggling. The young today are coming to the other side and the “new” rebellion is success. Where are you in these societal trends? Maybe you don’t quite fit into any of these general categories. You are an individual, part of the great history of humanity, but you don’t have to fit the mold of the demographer, you can be yourself. But at the end of the day, we all need to understand how society moves, and why those neighbor’s teenagers are the way they are. Who would have thought this 90-degree turn would bring the young to a desire to succeed. Did you ever imagine that ? Janet E. Schweitzer, Executive Director SCOPE, Inc. of Trumbull County will be celebrating its Golden Anniversary at the Annual Dinner. The event will be held Monday February 27, 2012 at 12 p.m. 50 Years of service to Trumbull County Your food and gifts for the Christmas Basket Program helped make 100 senior citizens’ holidays a little brighter. Thanks to everyone who donated at the centers and to all the packers and people who donated their time to deliver the baskets. Your love and generosity is very much appreciated.
