The Cortland SCOPE held a
Mystery Dinner, “Lethal Luau”,
on April 28, 2011 at the Center.
Decorations were in the theme of
a Luau. The actors were members of SCOPE and a couple of
family members. This is the
second Mystery Dinner held
at the center, and both were a
big success. This mystery was
about a murder on an island and
those at the dinner had to try
and determine who it was who
committed the murder. Each
suspect told a little about themselves and there were clues also
distributed. It was acted out as
a play and we were allowed to
ask questions of the suspects
and could only hope they were
telling the truth to the questions
asked. In the end, there was vote
taken on who killed the detective.
Over 66 people enjoyed appetizers, a Luau dinner, and a
variety of desserts. A great time
was had by all and everyone is
looking forward to the next one.
Getting Ready
For Harvest
Dorothy Owens, Jean Callahan,
Loretta McGee & Lois Reed at the
Lordstown SCOPE Community
Garden at the home of Dorothy &
Wes Owen.
Through much adversity with a
fire at the greenhouse, and ensuing
insurance saga, Lordstown SCOPE
members persevered and got the
vegetable garden finally planted.
The members are looking forward
to a bountiful harvest this summer.

The Family of SCOPE
Tears streamed down her
hearty, broad, face, as she told
me, after a luncheon at the Cortland SCOPE, that her husband
of 35 years, with no advance
warning, had left her one day,
for a girlfriend in California, and
she was so alone she cried every
time she thought about it. Over
and over she said,” “Thank heavens SCOPE is here. I can come
here and enjoy friendships and
a feeling that I am cared for, at
least a little bit, between visits
with my daughter in Columbus.”
The stove’s crusted with
burned on grease. The ceiling
has huge holes where the rainwater expands the plaster each time
showers fall. Reeking smells of
mold, and urine repel the SCOPE
social workers as they attempt
to find the keys to helping this
older adult find a modicum of
joy, and health and in his own
home where he wants to be.
I can keep the weight off as
long as I can tap dance,” she said,
her shiny brown eyes sparkling.
“You know I weighed almost
265 before I started dancing,
when I was 57 here at SCOPE.
“When can we get into the
building tomorrow, (Saturday)
for the SCOPE Riverside Railroad
Club? We have to get all ready,”
said the75 year old mother of
the young, thin, and balding
man who carried the two model
barns toward the railroad garden.
Families with five year olds will
want to watch the trains run!”
“I wanted you to know grateful I am that SCOPE could take
care of me when I came home
from the hospital last month. It
was such a blessing, because I
had so much pain. Thank you
so much!” the caller said, “ And
I hope you remember to wear
your sunscreen, because the
basal cells meant I had to have the
whole left side of my face rebuilt.”
“The free dinner? Yes we
will be having it on June 23,” the
receptionist said to the caller.

“What’s for dessert?’
“Pineapple upside down cake.”
“But I am allergic to pineapple.”
“Perhaps you could
take the pineapple off.”
“Skype? What’s Skype?”
“We are going to set up cameras which attach to computers
enabling you to talk to your family anywhere around the world,”
the manager said. “You could,
perhaps, talk to the offices, too!”
We are family. Lonely?
Overweight? Sick? Troubled?
Maybe you’re just in need of a
silly, ridiculous joke, or a volunteer purpose to serve others,
build new friendships, learn new
skills, and get the most from
life. You will find it at SCOPE
centers, and then if you need
help in the house, or a basement
cleaned, SCOPE can and will do it.
Janet E. Schweitzer,

Sister Dorothy must have figured
out that her Master’s in Geography
Education was getting
old, so she updated
it with a Master’s in
Theology with a focus
on the universe. She
learned to appreciate
all of God’s creation
on Earth and now she
is extending it further
out. The first degree was from Indiana
University of Pennsylvania, completed in
1972, this one was from Loyola of New
Orleans, where she attended graduation
with her class in May. Sr. Dorothy is the
manager of the Lordstown SCOPE Senior
Center.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you

Ms. Brown thinks her experience in caring for her own mother

Getting Help is a SNAP!
by: Charles Barber
Communications Manager
Ohio Association of Second Harvest
Foodbanks
There is a knock on your door
and when you open it, you are
greeted with a surprise. In front
of your door, there is a box of food,
but there is no one in sight. Inside
the box, you find a loaf of wheat
bread, a gallon of low-fat milk,
two cans of chicken noodle soup, a
jar of peanut butter, a box of bran
flakes and a gallon of orange juice.
The following month, there
is another knock on your front
door and when you open it, there
is no one at your door, but again,
you are greeted with a box of
nutritious food. This time the
box contains a bag of red apples,
two green peppers, a bunch of
bananas, a bag of potatoes, a loaf
of bread and three cans of tuna.
This is a situation that you
may be able to make a reality
every month for at least a year,
just few for a short trip to visit an
Ohio Benefit Bank counselor who
can help you apply for the food
assistance program. With a minimum allotment for seniors of $16
a month, it might not seem like a
jackpot to have won, but each of
the boxes of food that were just explained are examples of what can
be purchased for $16 from a grocer.
Many individuals, especially
members of our nation’s Greatest
Generation, seniors, are very hesitant to apply for and receive food
assistance, which is also known
as SNAP. There is a stigma that
people associate with programs
like food assistance, but as a program that was designed to be a
supplement for individuals with
limited incomes, food assistance
is a great way to ensure that basic elements of a person’s diet are
available each and every month.
