compared to 2011. On the other hand we had 15%
decrease in the sales of press products for the same
period. We think the main reason for this trend in the
drastical drop in the average age of tourists. This year
Black Sea resorts were crowded with students
(teenagers and kids) spending their vacations at school
camps and having no interest in buying any press
products. The high season for the Bulgarian tourists
has become shorter to approximately 50 days, starting
only in the second half of July and hardly reaching the
end of August.
Partworks
Partworks collections have stable sales levels, contrary to the development of other press products. In
May Amercom launched their fifth collection in
Bulgaria through Bulgarpress: “The Locomotives of
Tourism in Bulgaria
During the Summer season of 2012 the number of
tourists visiting our country increased by 5 - 10 %
the World”. The publisher of the biggest weekly
newspaper “Weekend” started in June the title
“Banknotes and Coins of the World”. DeAgostini
also launched in September a new partwork called
“The Insects”.

Local Press Market
Tourism in Czech Republic
Decrease in sales seems be persisting on the local
press market. The distribution is controlled by the two
of the biggest publisher groups “National Distribution
Agency” and “Newspapers Group Bulgaria” via their
distribution companies. In the end of June 2012 there
was a confrontation between these two groups and
they stopped supplying each other with the titles they
publish for a whole week.
During this period the points of sale were forced to
sell only the titles that are being published by the
group they belong to. There has not been any launch
of a new title (neither magazine nor newspaper) that
would have some real effect on the market for the last
6 months.
The first six months of
2012

in the number of
nights spent by foreign
visitors in the country
(+3%). On the other
hand the average
amounts spent per stay
continue to decline,
with the exception of
Russian and Far East
(China, Japan) visitors.

VAT
Changes in VAT rates are becoming the evergreen of
Czech political scene. Following the increase of VAT
reduced rate on 1.1.2012, the Government proposed
another increase as of 1.1.2013. The idea of unifying
both rates at one level is forgotten and the current
proposal is to increase temporarily (for 3 years) both
reduced and general VAT rates by 1%. As a result, the
reduced VAT would be 15% and the general rate 21%.
The reason for this tax increase is the necessity to push
the state debt down under 3% of GDP. Unfortunately,
this is not the only change in the Czech Tax system,
income tax of private persons will grow, there will be
important changes in the retirement schemes etc. The
population reacted to the forseen changes by reduction
of consumption and increased savings, only few believe
that the tax increases will really be just a temporary
matter. The first draft of the Tax Bill was refused by the
Parliament and the Government is now seeking support
for a slightly amended version. As the increase of
reduced VAT will influence the prices of newspapers,
magazines and books, we will keep our suppliers
updated.
tourists declining and that of Russian tourists growing
strongly, it is expected that Russia will become the most
important source country in the near future.
Changes in the Distribution Market
Printed press recorded severe losses in the past couple
of years in the Czech Republic. Local press distributors
managed to compensate these losses in turnover for
some time by adding new products to their selection,
such as low cost CDs and DVDs. As the demand for
these products is also decreasing now, everyone is looking for new opportunities. The positive impact of the
otherwise negative turnover development is that both
wholesale and retail are now by far more open to test
new products: partworks, non-press, etc.

Tourism in Hungary
For the first time in the past years the number of
nights spent by foreign tourists in Hungarian hotels
increased in the first seven months of 2012 compared
to the same period last year: even the number of
nights spent by German tourists increased by 4,1%
which is a positive trend after the constant decrease
in the preceding years. On the contrary, the average
amount spent by foreign tourists decreased by 2,5%,
meaning that tourists are trying to keep their holiday
costs low, and most probably do not intend to buy
press products. Due to the bankruptcy of Malév Hungarian Airlines Budapest Airport had significant drop
in the number of passengers which will surely affect
the traditionally strong Autumn months in Budapest
tourism. As a side effect, Terminal 1 of the airport,
used mainly by low-cost airlines, was closed, resulting
in higher costs for these airlines at the bigger Terminal 2.
New Virgin Store at Budapest Airport
Lapker Zrt opened the first Virgin airport store in
Hungary on 13 September at Terminal 2A of Buda-
of the new store. In total we supply now 7 stores
with press and books at Budapest Airport, as 3 Relay
shops at Terminal 1 had to be closed.
Hungaropress Active in Social Media
Following the success of cooperation with Country
Komfort Blog and Facebook page that we were and
still are using to highlight our wide range of country
style home & decoration products, we decided to
extend our social media activities to other areas of
interest. We started cooperation with two fashion
blogs supporting our September fashion magazine
promotion and a very popular car blog and Facebook
community which will enhance our October car
magazine campaign. Should these new cooperations
also result in subscription sales we plan to further
develop this segment within our marketing activities.

Since early Summer we have been exporting foreign
bestsellers as well as Hungarian books to our sister
company in Romania. LS Travel Retail mainly supplies
stores at the airport and in shopping malls with English bestsellers as well as travel books and the Transylvanian part of the country with Hungarian books.
Currently we export 355 titles and the selection is
continuously being revised as a result of the seamless
communication between the two companies, including details like the thorough definition of the shelf
layout in Inmedio and Relay stores.

international key accounts) and keep only using them as
a logistic service provider. The whole press distribution
market is now in a transition period and all the publishers
are making efforts to re-organize the distribution activity.
Some of them chose to work directly with all the small
kiosk networks (over 100 small retailers). Others are
trying to consolidate, eg. Sanoma titles are distributed
together with Ringier, the collections of Hachette Fascicoli are distributed through Burda etc.
Partwork Market in Development
The segment of partworks is the leader of sales for the
whole publishing market now. The growth is driven by
DeAgostini and Hachette but other international players
are also looking at the field and thinking to enter the
market.
After 4 new and very successful collections this Spring –
one of Hachette Fascicoli and three of DeAgostini – the
Autumn is again said to be very fruitful with several
launches planned by DeAgostini. One of them has
in our 1000+ portfolio with a focus on international
press that benefits of sustained marketing campaigns
and special offers. Additionally, all users on our website
will have the possibility to read the newest information
and will have the possibility of interacting with other
people sharing their hobbies.
Changes in the Press Distribution Organization
Following the change of ownership in April (second
time since Rautakirja’s exit from Romania) Hiparion has
stopped the collaboration with DeAgostini in the month
of May and is now focusing more and more on logistics
and transportation. By now most of the publishers
stopped delivering them as a client (except for some
already appeared on the market and the second one is
about to come out in the following days. The first collection of the season (Stones of Energy) was a success as
the publisher invested a lot in the promotional campaigns, including personalized stands in Inmedio stores.
We estimate that this approach will lead to an increase
of more than 30% in partworks sales compared to
2011 in our Inmedio network.
