Pismo Beach and the 5 Cities Welcome Map Pismo Beach is a nostalgic California beach town that attracts people from all over the world. Sunbathe in the perfect weather while watching the surfers, or take a stroll along the 1,200 ft. pier. Events such as the annual Classic Car Show and the July 4th fireworks display are both held on or around the pier. No license is required to fish on the pier. However, please check with the local Chamber of Commerce regarding license requirements for all sports activities. Downtown is a perfect place to get a bite to eat or browse through the many interesting shops. Pismo Beach is the focal point in a stretch of several beach towns. Pismo Beach Visitor and Conference Center is located on 760 Mattie Rd., Pismo Beach or call them at (805) 773-7034 www.classiccalifornia.com. Pismo State Beach is California’s only drivable beach. Here you can rent an all-terrain vehicle for a ride on the shoreline and dunes that connect Grover Beach, Oceano & Nipomo. Just past Grover Beach city limits sign there is an eucalyptus grove that is home to the Monarch Butterflies. 37 Be sure to check the “Events” section at www.arroyograndevillage.org for upcoming events and more information. At the Pismo Beach pier Fun Things to Do! Avila Beach is a must for lovers of warm beaches, fine dining, shopping, sport fishing & people watching. The mineral springs and spas are well worth the scenic drive. Be sure to take a leisurely walk on the 1.5 mile Bob Jones Trail. Directions to this fantastic walk are: Take Avila Beach Rd. west, and turn right on Ontario Rd. to the parking area at the trail head. The current section of the trail is paved and provides an easy level walk through the woods along San Luis Obispo Creek to Avila Beach. 36 33 31 Hearst Castle & Day Trips North! d E. Then turn left on to Highway 1 north. This will 1 take you up the coast to Morro Bay which features a bustling & colorful wharf on the Embarcadero and a great view of Morro Rock. Continuing up the coast are the must-see towns of Neptune Pool at Hearst Castle Cayucos, Cambria & San Simeon. Located five minutes north of Cambria is San Simeon, the home of Hearst Castle. Tours are daily except on Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Years Day. Tours start at 9:00 am. There are many activities nearby, including the Monarch Butterfly Grove, Dune Hiking, Horseback Riding & Off Road Vehicle Riding on the sand dunes. You will find that there are many one-of-a-kind shops to satisfy every interest in the Pismo Beach and Five Cities area. Here you will find gifts with astonishingly fair prices. Encourage the advertising restaurants, shops, and activities with your patronage and comments. Be sure to tell the merchants and the restaurateurs that you saw their ad in the Welcome Map. Don’t forget wine tasting, either at an individual tasting room or hire your own customized limousine tour! Visiting Monarch Monarch Butterfly Grove, the “Butterfly Trees” of Pismo Beach are one of our most beloved attractions. From late October through February, thousands of colorful Monarch butterflies cluster in the limbs of Eucalyptus and Monterey Pines in the area, giving the appearance of yellow and orange leaves. They travel over the Sierra Mountains and west of the Rockies. Some come from as far away as Canada to escape the colder temperatures of the north. For more information on the Monarch Butterfly visit MonarchButterfly.org. The Monarch Butterfly Grove is located half a mile south of Pismo Beach just off Hwy 1. For more information, please call the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce at (805) 773-4382. While visiting the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes there are numerous opportunities for activity. Volunteers and Staff host visitors to the Dunes Center, present educational programs and serve as docents for hikes and bird walks into the dunes. They offer several walks each week which are open to the public for free. They can also arrange tours for groups or organizations by reservation.
