Meltz, Ph.D. Action for Healthy Communities" A Collaborative Preparing Community Needs Assessments Director of the Year TERENCE CONCANNON Action for Healthy Communities (AHC) was started in 1998 as a "collaborative", with participation by agencies and public and private organizations committed to improving the overall quality of life in SLO County. There are currently more than thirty (30) such organizations participating. ACH, approximately every three years, undertakes a community wide study covering seven different "sectors," issuing topic specific folios on important matters facing our community. The report is now called "Vital Signs - Understanding SLO County." Its 7th and most recent folio focuses on "Homelessness in SLO County." The study has a large enough sample size so that information in its reports can be provided for the four major regions of the County: South, North, Central and Coastal. A Steering Committee oversees the implementation of the studies and dissemination of the resulting reports. 2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from various sectors, such as health, education, *Ask us how you can have your business here* Grand Clam Award CITY of PISMO BEACH - PUBLC WORKS county government, social services, and planning and development An independent research firm is hired to conduct a random digit-dial telephone survey and collect secondary data for the reports. The Steering Committee oversees additional face to face surveys for special populations, such as monolingual Spanishspeaking parents and homeless persons. The mission of Action for Healthy Communities is to "develop a comprehensive planning approach to identify and address community needs," with the goal to inspire "collaborative efforts with community partners to implement effective programs that improve community health and well-being." This is in part accomplished by providing "valid information on an ongoing basis to service providers, policy-makers and funders concerning the creation, management and support of programs." The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County serves as the fiscal agent for the ACH (and is also one of its sponsors) For additional information about Action for Healthy Communities, and access to other recent reports ("Status of Children in SLO County" and "Cost of Living," please visit its web site at: www.ActionSLO.org
