Page 2 The Source FROM THE DESK OF THE CEO PETER CANDELA I recently attended the Annual Chamber of Commerce Conference, held in Burlingame CA. Over 400 Chambers of Commerce were represented with 700 CEO, staff and directors in attendance. It was the largest gathering of Chambers in California. There wasn’t any shortage of information; if you had a question you needed answered or a problem you needed help solving, this was the place. The experience at this conference was amazing! I was able to bring back information relating to our community, information to help our businesses and our economy understand what it takes to expand, how to market effectively and how to share resources for a mutual benefit. If you have any questions regarding your own business please contact me at the Chamber. I would love to share the information with you. Coming up in the very near future (April 23rd) is our very special culinary event, the Taste of Pismo, with 42 of the best restaurants, breweries and wineries our local community has to offer. This event was sold out last year and we are already very close to selling out again this year. If you are interested in going, please contact the Chamber or just go online and reserve your tickets. If you have been by the pier in the last few weeks you have noticed a lot of activity in the dirt lot next to the City Parking Lot. They are starting on the construction of The Inn at the Pier. It is a 14 month development which will enhance the pier town businesses. In addition, our very own Tony Wells is starting his development within a few months. A lot is happening in a very short time. I will give you more details next month and continue sharing information with you as we have it. We hope all is well with you. Peter The best benefit from this conference was all of the contacts we made! FARMERS MARKET Every Wednesday New Spring Hours (3-6 pm) On the Pismo Pier Promenade Want to participate? Its mission is to promote volunteer opportunities for mature adults and match their experience, knowledge, and expertise to serve local community needs. travel to Greece See insert September 4th Attend the informational meeting on March 3rd at 4 pm PISMO DOGGIE BISCUIT BAR RSVP The RSVP Program has actually been in SLO County for 43 years, recruiting senior volunteers 55+ to serve in a wide variety of nonprofit and government agencies. SVS has an Executive Director and three part-time staff members. In August 2015, the CCCV program was developed in response to changing RSVP Federal Guidelines and was officially launched October 1. The volunteer age was lowered to 50+ to attract younger volunteers to replace older volunteers as they age out. "The new CCCV program, a companion program to the well-established, effective and respected Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) specializes in the recruitment and placement of senior volunteers age 50+ in high impact community assignments, matching volunteer interests and skills with critical community needs. The CCCV is entirely funded by individual and business donations." Volunteers serve 47 local organizations in different ways. South County organizations include the Arroyo Grande Library, Arroyo Grande in Bloom, CA State Parks/Oceano Division (PB Butterfly Grove, Visitors Center, Camps, Mounted Assistance and Off Highway Vehicle Patrol), Central Coast Aquarium in Avila Beach, Grover Beach Community Library, South County Family Ed. & Cultural Center (parent organization of the Exploration Station in Grover Beach), and Tortoise & Turtle Rescue. CCCV provides approximately 100+ volunteers, and RSVP provides about 750 volunteers. SVS provides $1 million free supplemental accident/liability insurance for all volunteers while they are at their job sites. While SVS, through RSVP, is primarily funded by the Corporation for National & Community Services, with supplemental funding from SLO County and private donations, the CCCV program is funded solely through private and business donations, supplemented by an initial local government grant as seed money. No Federal Funding is available. Senior Volunteer Services, Inc. can receive donations on its website, through Network4Good and JustGive and by contacting its office. To learn more about SVS and its programs and volunteer opportunities, visit www.seniorvolunteers.org. It also has a Facebook 805-773-4382 Www.pismochamber.com page:www.facebook.com/seniorvolunteerservices and advertises all volunteer opportunities via a weekly online E-Blast.
