This is the time to celebrate our great country and appreciate all of the wonderful freedoms we sometimes take for granted. We must say thank you to all of our military for the sacrifices they have made. This year is no different than past years. The Pismo Beach Fireworks Display will be second to none! The day begins at 9:00am with vendor booths, Music beginning at noon, and the Firework Display starts at 9:00 pm on the Pismo Beach Pier. You can get the best seat in the house for only $25 for a VIP ticket! Great seats plus coffee, hot chocolate and goodies plus the best fireworks show anywhere…. See you on the 4th…. On a different note, at the CVB, (Pismo Beach Conference and Visitor’s Bureau) our dear friend and CVB director, Suzen Brazile is retiring June 30th. She has been with the City for over 35 years and a longtime friend of the Chamber. Suzen is one of the reason I’m working at the Pismo Beach Chamber. She is also responsible for helping Beth Stewart and Rochelle Bento becoming part of the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce team. We appreciate her incredible insight and vision in making Pismo Beach one of the most visited cities on the Central Coast…We will miss her and we hope her retirement is everything she wants it to be!! We hope to see you July 4th on the Pismo Beach pier and drop by the Chamber booth to say hi…. Meltz, Ph.D. 50Now - A Housing First Model for the Homeless There are ongoing efforts across the nation and here in San Luis Obispo County to assist the homeless and to end homelessness. A significant portion of the homeless have medical, behavioral health and/or addiction issues that need to be dealt with as attempts are made to find housing for them. The solution is complicated by the fact that the vacancy rate for apartment rentals in SLO is a minuscule 1.7 percent (%). A new program underway locally to help is the "50Now Program." The program goal is to immediately house and support the fifty (50) most vulnerable homeless adults in SLO County, as identified by the Department of Social Services (DSS) using a special assessment tool (the VI-SPDAT). In this program, which became operational locally in October 2014, severely challenged homeless clients are first housed no matter what their personal state is when they are placed in a residence. As these persons are housed, they receive on-going case management support, using a team approach to address the very problems that make them vulnerable. Initially, 295 persons who were identified across the county as being the most vulnerable were individually surveyed to ascertain their status. Approximately 25% of these persons reside in the South County area, with several born and raised here. The supervising team is working with landlords in the South County area to help house these clients. The 50Now program is under the auspices of the Transitions-Mental Health Association (TMHA), a non-profit community based organization. THMA is working in partnership with the SLO County DSS and Community Action Partnership of SLO (CAPSLO) to deliver the 50Now services. The staff consists of a Program Manager and six (6) full time case managers with different expertise; a housing specialist, licensed therapist, medication manager, peer specialist, substance abuse counselor, and a licensed nurse. In addition to the obvious benefit to the most vulnerable, the entire community indirectly benefits from the program in savings associated with decreased emergency room visits, decreased in-patient hospital stays, and decreased jail costs. These savings are not speculative; data supporting this is already available for the first 6 months of the program. Information about the program (link) can be found at the website of the Homeless Services Oversight Council of SLO (www.slohomeless.com), and will soon be on the THMA website (www.t-mha.org).
