T
he CTPA Board has finalized the schedule for the
2012-2013 Finals which will be held on Saturday,
October 12, 2013 at the RimRock Event Center at
Brasada Ranch, Powell Butte, OR. There will be a
banquet Saturday night at 7 p.m. to award the penning
finals awards, as well as the buckles won at the finals
event.
CTPA will be hosting the RSNC STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
FINALS which will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2013.
Also, for those who have been CTPA members this year,
and sorted in 3 events or penned in 5 events, and
participate in the State Finals, jackets will be awarded.
Anyone can sort in the Finals; however, to qualify for
September 2013
Buckles will be awarded for each penning and sorting
class at the finals. CTPA as always has planned some
great awards.
RSNC, who sponsors the
sorting
awards,
has
announced that the awards
will be a big improvement
over last year. Be sure to
review the "Important
Information about the
Finals Event" in this
newsletter.
It is election time and you
will be seeing a ballot in the mail soon. Please watch for it
and be sure to vote and return your ballot by September
21, 2013.
Also, included in the mailing with the ballot will be a
survey that asks members to vote on whether they would
like to see CTPA continue to produce RSNC shows for
sorting or change back to the previous CTPA format.
There will also be questions about club activities next
year, such as co-sanctioning, number of events, and
preferred location of events. The survey is also included
in
this
newsletter
for
your
convenience.
Please take the time to voice your opinion so that the
Board can make a decision that best represents the
majority of members.

CARDS WITHTHE
SQUARE
CTPA began using the SQUARE credit card system a
couple of events ago to see if it would be feasible for the
Association to use. Those who have used the system like
it as they can use their cards to get air miles or points.
There is a 5 percent office charge to cover what the
SQUARE charges CTPA. When you pay your bill, just tell
the office that you would like to use your credit/debit card.
2012-2013 FINALS
INFORMATION
Where did it go? Another year is almost at an end.
Although this was a hard year in trying to locate cattle at
September 2013
an affordable price in the areas in which
CTPA wanted to hold its events, CTPA
made it work for its members. To end
the season, the 2012-2013 Penning
Finals will be held at the RimRock Event
Center at Brasada Ranch on October 13,
2013, beginning at 8 a.m. followed by an
awards banquet on the premises.
Buckles will be given to all Finals class winners and High
Point Buckles awarded at the banquet. Awards will be
given down three places in the Pro-Am-Novice divisions
and a high point Youth buckle. Jackets will be given to
those riders who rode five penning events AND the Finals.
The banquet will commence at 7 p.m., awards at 7:45 p.m.
and finally music and dancing at 8:30 p.m. Hennessy
Sloter and her father will belt out some good, toe-tapping,
dancing country music. The menu has not been finalized
at the time of this article. The cost of the banquet will be
paid for all qualified award participants and $12 for all
others.
CTPA will host the RSNC Oregon State Finals on Sunday,
October 14, 2013 beginning at 8 a.m. An awards
ceremony for the RSNC awards will follow the end of the
sorting. All CTPA members who rode three RSNC events
AND the Finals will also qualify for a Finalist Jacket, as
well as awards down to two places for the Pro-Am-Novice
and a High Point Rookie award. The points for CTPA
members have been tracked separately during the year to
qualify them for these awards.
If you have any questions concerning the Finals or your
qualification, please contact a Board Director.
THERE IS A NEW SHERIFF IN
TOWN!!!
Changes in CTPA Board of
Directors
As you probably already know, there
have been a few changes on the Board
of Directors this year. Early in the
year, Morgan Flint resigned his
position as Vice President/Promotions
and moved to Arizona. Dennis Holte
resigned his position as Vice
President/Event Director and Bobbi Elliott recently
Page 2
resigned as President of CTPA. On behalf of the CTPA
members and the remaining Board members, we thank
each and every one of them for their time and commitment
that they put into managing CTPA; it is not an easy job.
will enjoy working with you for the remainder of your
term.
When a Board member resigns, the remaining Board
members nominate and vote on the director replacement.
The Board made the following nominations to complete
the remainder of the elected terms:
BENEFIT FOR JOHNSON
MEDICAL FUND
September 28, 2013
Tom Norton Arena
Madras, OR




Vice President/Promotions: Bob Dunn
Vice President/Event Director: Dick Elliott
At-Large Director: Karen Friend
President: Denis Fast
The President was the hard
one. It is a very demanding
position and takes a person
who is willing to step up,
think outside of the box and
look at the Association as a whole, besides a time
commitment. Denis Fast fit this bill to a tee. Denis had
been a prior President of CTPA for a couple of terms and
he knows what works and what doesn’t work and is not
afraid to try something new. He is also well-liked and
respected by his peers. The Board had an ulterior motive
and invited Denis to the last Board meeting. We were
actually trying to get him to put his name on the ballot for
the next season in some capacity. When Bobbi resigned at
that meeting, we waited until Denis was feeding Kyrie
(Kirsten Kolb’s little girl) and he had his defenses
down….and he accepted! Thank you Denis, the Board
September 2013
A
benefit will be held for
the JOHNSON MEDICAL
FUND to help with the
medical expenses for An and
Jerry Johnson following Jerry’s
excavation accident earlier this
year. As most of you already
know, Jerry was severely
injured and although he is
getting better and recuperating,
he is still facing several more surgeries. Needless to say,
this has been very financially taxing to An and Jerry.
There will be a benefit sorting on September 28, 2013 at
the Norton arena in Madras. See the attached flyer for
further information. The facility, cattle, personnel and
motels have been donated for this event. All profit will be
given to THE JOHNSON MEDICAL FUND. Please come and
support this worthy event. If you are unable to attend and
would like to make a contribution, please contact Emily
Kennedy and she can give you the information.
RimRock Event Center
April 27-28, 2013
A
fter the WVTPA event in February, CTPA
moved on to the RimRock Event Center at
Brasada Ranch for a late April event. This event
always brings out some new Central Oregon
players. It was also nice to see some Washington players
that had not been around for a while, Alex Oberg, Marv
and Pam Bright, along with Mike and Susan Stowell. It is
always a pleasure to see them. The cattle were supplied
by Martin Cattle Company that provides great cattle and
Page 3
sometimes the cattle come out on top. The Bend OSET
did an awesome job of working gates all weekend.

May 25-26, 2013
From April, we moved onto Memorial
Day weekend. The Central Oregon weather was great as
always and again the cattle seemed to be lying in wait to
just sock it to the riders. I am not too sure what Martin
Cattle Company feeds their cattle or if they perform some
subliminal messages on them prior to delivery, but man,
as you can tell by the times, the cattle were ready to take
on anyone. A total of 94 penning teams, and 153 sorting
teams attended this event.

Fast Ranch
Unity, OR
June 8-9, 2013
Denis and Lisa Fast, FAST RANCH in
Unity, OR, produced a CTPA penning right after the
Memorial Day event. Denis and Lisa have always put on
a good show with higher paybacks. There were
contestants from five states, the weather was great,
good food, fun social time.
The cattle were
outstanding, with fresh cattle throughout event.

Event Center
June 28-29, 2013
C & J LIVESTOCK (Conrad and
Janece Stitser) of Reno, NV
sanctioned the Reno Rodeo
penning this year with CTPA. It
was an awesome event, but
presented some rating issues. This event has always been
a difficult one to rate riders because you are dealing with
so many riders from different venues attending who are
unknown to many riders. Many telephone calls are made
to different associations to try to get rating information
and then try to rate them at the event. CTPA worked very
closely with Conrad and Janece and associations from
Arizona and California in trying to determine the correct
ratings. There are always those who slip through the
cracks, but CTPA wants to thank each and every one of
you who helped in this tumultuous task to make this event
a success. We hope that Reno will have CTPA back in the
future.
It is hard to have a bad event that is run in conjunction
with the Reno Rodeo. However, there was a thunder
storm one day that we thought we were going to float way.
A lot of water came down in a short period of time and
beautiful lightning bolts careened across the sky and then
just like that … it was gone. Not sure what it did to the
rodeo footing that evening, but it didn’t hurt the penning
any. Congratulations to all CTPA members who placed in
the average. This was one tough event for everyone. As
you can see from the below times, you had to be on top of
your game for this event.

There was $2,500 added money and buckles were given to
all class winners, including the Quick Draw that was won
by none other, than CTPA member Floyd Foster. A
Calcutta was held on the Quick Draw to benefit the
Johnson Medical Fund for rider Jerry Johnson who was
hurt in an excavation accident earlier in the year. Seventy
percent of the pot went to the bidder with 30 percent to the
Fund. A total of $660 was donated to the Fund. Winners
of the Calcutta were Conrad Stitser and Craig Dustin.
Thank you to all who participated in the Calcutta for this
great cause!
Preston Porter, Owner of Lone Star Equestrian Center in
Coolidge, Arizona, was at the event and awarded free
weeks at his resort. Check out his websites for more
information:

An RSNC sorting was held following the completion of
the penning with a lot of teams. We didn’t get done until
10:30 Sunday evening! I didn’t put the results of the
RSNC sorting here, as it was not sanctioned by CTPA.
You can get the results by going to the RSNC website.

After an eventful June, we moved onto
the July 4th weekend and back to the
RimRock Event Center. The 4th of July weekend was not
too kind to CTPA, but the event went on as scheduled.
There were some riders that came and played over the
Holiday with CTPA who have not been to an event all
year. It was nice to see them and hope they went
home fairly happy.

The mood for the penning shifted when Jessie Dillin and
Stephanie Schmidt were hurt and transported to the
hospital for treatment during the running of the 12 class.
Fortunately, both have recovered and Jessie was back in
the saddle at our Labor Day event.
Photos were taken by Mike Goo and can be found on this
website, mikegoophotography@charter.net
There was $2,800 added money in the penning and
buckles were given to all class winners.

Most of the riders were CTPA members, so I am happy to
say that CTPA did well at this one, unlike Reno.

At the conclusion of the day, there was a lot to do in
Winnemucca….a cattle sale, bands, car shows, street
dances, to mention a few. Everyone had a good time and
some were a little draggy the next day.
An RSNC sorting was held following the completion of
the penning with a lot of teams. I will say that Scott Short
sure knows how to make Emily Kennedy blush! Again,
the results of the RSNC sorting are not shown here, as it
was not sanctioned by CTPA. You can get the results by
going to the RSNC website.

WINNEMUCCA EVENT CENTER
Winnemucca, NV
August 2-3, 2013
Winnemucca, NV was sanctioned by CTPA with C & J
LIVESTOCK (Conrad and Janece Stitser) of Reno, NV as
the producers. The event was smaller than normal, due to
other events in the area that pulled the California riders
and Arizona riders. C & J also had issues with obtaining
cattle due to the lack of water in Nevada and suppliers
selling off their cattle. Oregon is evidentially not the only
ones plagued with cattle issues. Great cattle were found
but they did not want to cooperate with the penners who
got them straightened out for the sorters! What a job!
Frisky little bovines that ran just about wherever and
whenever they wanted without consideration for the
penners who were trying to get them to go in one
direction!

This was the last event to qualify for the
2012-2013 Finals. The turnout was small, but there was a
return of some old faces. Jim, Diane, Lizzie and Barry
Baremore. Barry had a good weekend while Lizzie (the
newly pregnant Mrs. Baremore) watched from the
sidelines to help him collect his winnings. Jim Baremore
had been recuperating from back surgery and then a
broken ankle. You sure couldn’t tell that he had been out
of the saddle for a while. Conrad and Janece Stitser from
Reno were also on hand to take their share back to
Nevada. Must be pay back…leaves Nevada to Oregon,
Page 16
leaves Oregon to Nevada. Kip and Karen Veltman
brought along their nephew Kyler to join the clan.
Speaking of Veltmans, Garrett grows another foot every
time I see him. He said he is around 6’3” or 6’4” now and
he is just starting high school? Kip is going to need a box
to talk to him pretty soon. Jessie Dillin was back and she
thanked everyone for their support and thoughtfulness
during and after her accident. It was a very emotional
thank you from Jessie.
