Most of the time I can't think of what to
write about each month. This month I sit here
trying to figure out how to get it all in one
article. Winter Warm Up was so much fun! It
was great to see everyone after the holiday
season, kick off our shoes and just have fun!
So many hugs and smiling faces it was
amazing to see. This year felt really different,
whether it was the hotel set up or just that we
have finally figured it out, but I truly enjoyed
this Winter Warm Up. The Chapter Pride tables
really looked so good this year. Each Chapter
brings their own personality to their table. It is
fun to look through the scrapbooks and see what everyone has done
throughout the year. All the scrapbooks look different and shows the
different styles done by our members. Our Chapter Skits are always
amazing. So many talented members we have in our chapters. Never a dull
moment. I was very proud to see how many members took advantage of the
seminars we had for the weekend. It is always good to participate in all
aspects of the rally. A little education or renewing what we already know
never hurts anyone. We are fortune enough in our District that we a lot of
quality trained instructors to serve the members needs in Safety and
Knowledge. A Big Thank you to all the instructors who helped make this
possible. We hoped you would enjoy the hospitality room this year. Many
discussions on how to set it up were held and we made it happen.
Unfortunately next year the room isn't that big but we will still enjoy your
company. The Chili provided by Chapter Z was very good. They always have
smiles on their faces and bring a renewed energy to everything they attend.
We Thank them for letting us join them on their 20th Anniversary and hope
they continue for the next 20 years.
Looking ahead; the District is hoping you take advantage of the many programs available for you
to participate in; Dash for Cash, Meet the Chapters, MAD Poker Run, Capturing Chapter Z Traveling
Trophy and the Chapter of the Year program. Have you filled the calendar with activities yet? Be sure to
leave a little room for that "hey I want to ride here voice". Sometimes we fill the calendar so full we don't
leave space for that last minute, new member idea, place to ride. We get it the rut of planning the same
things we do every year. Some of us love the same old same old, but others like to try a different
approach. How did you plan your calendar this year?
Well no one can say there is nothing to do in Illinois! Get out the map, put some gas in the bike
and ride!! Keep track of your co-riders mileage and beat my miles for a FREE registration to Winter
Warm Up next year!!
Ride Safe Thank you,

Winter Warm Up 2016 is now in the record books and your
Rider Education had an outstanding weekend.
A big thank you to Steve, Jeannie, Larrie, Kimi and all the seminar
presenters. We were able to put on 13 seminars and had over 100
members attend.
Our Mission
To Save Lives Through Quality,
The Rider Education table was also a busy location. Between
myself, Steve, and Sue we signed up several new members into the
levels program.
World Class Education.
Our Slogan
“Safety Is For Life
Once again Joey Watson gave his presentation which was attended by
almost everyone. Even the vendors were watching and listening
carefully.
Having Terry Redmen give the membership an update on
Illinois motorcycle accidents was very informing.
Congratulations to Mike Buzick who advanced the Grand Master in the Levels
program and to Dan Davis, Jean Potwora and Walter Potwora who advanced to Senior
Master.
I what to take this time to welcome all the new Chapter Educators who have stepped
up to assist their chapters with their Rider Education needs.
The 2016 Rider Courses are posted on the district web site. If you’re in need of a
rider course this year please fill out the application and sent it to me as soon as possible.

Winter Warm Up
We had a great time at the IL District Winter Warm Up in
Springfield! We watched folks having fun dressed up in their
various costumes and participating in games, seminars, skits and
winning prizes (whether it be raffle baskets, DQ cards, money,
certificates, etc.). If you weren’t able to make it, put next year’s on
your calendar now for Jan 20-21 at the Travelodge in Peoria.

Program Coordinators
We had lots of great costumes, baked goods, skits and chapter pride tables. Check out
the District facebook page to see the pictures of the winners posted by Jean Potwora.
While you are on the road this year visiting other chapters, rallies, and Wing Ding, check
out what they have to offer and see what you are interested in participating in. Participation in
the activities is how you will have fun. Don’t overload yourself, know your limitations, or you
will find yourself exhausted and not having fun anymore.
Hope you have plenty of exciting trips planned this year. Take this next month to
investigate what is available and plan what you would like to do.
Hope to see you on the road!!! Let the good times roll!!!

Greetings from Southern Illinois,
2016 New Year is here and it is time for the Illinois District to swear in some
new Chapter Directors. Here is what a Chapter Director (CD) needs to focus on to
have a great Chapter.
We are the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. Never forget we are first
Motorcycle Riders and everything else is icing on the cake. The CD should never lose
sight as to what we are and what we are primarily here for. But a CD is responsible for
this and other things also.
The CD has three main areas of responsibility:
Steven and Diane Gottschalk
Assistant Director, IL District
MEC Coordinators, IL District
1. The health of the Chapter which means maintaining the FUN aspect of GWRRA life.
2. To keep a Chapter thriving and growing the CD will need to surround themselves with a great team of Officers
and participants.
3. The CD is the leader of the Chapter and they will need to develop leadership skills that they may not have or
hone the ones they already possess.
Health Of The Chapter
¥
FUN environment
Main reason for the CD: Keep the participants having FUN! If the Chapter participants are having fun the CD’s job
will be much easier. If they are having fun they won’t have time to bicker and complain.
¥
Positive attitude
The CD needs to maintain a positive attitude even when things are not as good as they could be. If the CD is
projecting a positive attitude the participants will reflect that in their enthusiasm for the Chapter.
¥
Persistence
A good CD must be persistent and follow through even though it may be difficult at times. The participants will be
more willing to help when the CD is persistent.
¥
Expectations
The Chapter participants have expectations of what they want from the Chapter experience and of the Officers.
The CD should try to live up to those expectations as best they can. At the same time the CD has expectations of
what they want from the Chapter participants and they should clearly communicate those expectations to the
Chapter.
¥
Goals
The CD and their core team will establish goals for the Chapter during their planning meetings. They will convey
those goals to the Chapter participants and get buy in to accomplish the goals.

•
Leadership
The CD is not a boss, manager, supervisor or dictator. Although there may be times a
CD has to make the final decision to keep things moving forward they will not have
made the decision without consulting with their Team or the Chapter participants.
Members expect you to lead, not push them from behind. The CD should be out front
in most chapter activities and pulling the members with them.
Support your Chapter Director!

A NNOUNCEMENT F ROM H OME O FFICE
Sandi and I are very sorry to announce that John & Barb Pons will be resigning from their position for family reasons. We are so sad to see them leave this position but fully understand where family priorities need
to be in our lives. We all owe this incredible volunteer couple so much in GWRRA. They have made major
contributions to virtually every part of the Member Enhancement Program. Along with their outstanding
Assistants and staff they have helped improve almost the entire MEP Program. We sincerely thank them
for being such an important part of TEAM GWRRA.
Please join us in thanking them for their outstanding service and dedication. You won't have to say goodbye though as they are still going to stay active with their Chapter. They have also promised to help us train
their replacements. Because of this important consideration from them, you will see a very smooth transition in MEP.
We now must look forward and carefully select a new National Director of Membership Enhancement. If
you are interested in being considered for this position, please forward your request in writing along with a
brief resume to me as soon as possible.
Again, thanks Barb & John for all that you have for our Members and many contributions to our Association.

R EGION E D IRECTORS
Barb & I along with Ray & Sandi Garris would like you all to welcome to our GWRRA family the new
Region E Directors Bob & Nicki Fowkes. They may be new to this position, but Bob & Nicki are certainly
not new to Region E. They have served Region E for the last six years as the Assistant Region Directors
with Clayton & Lynda Alcorn, Bruce & Barb Beeman and Bruce Watkins. Bob & Nicki know Region E and
also the Members of Region E. They have the grassroots understanding of what the Region is about and
are in touch with the Members and their needs.
Bob & Nicki are both level 4 riders, are both seminar presenters and they have a great understanding of
all the programs and have supported them all. They are currently the Region E’s Couple of the Year and
will be representing Region E at Wing Ding in Billings. They come to us from Dixon, IL and call Chapter IL-G
home. They have been married for 45 years and had 4 children. Both Bob & Nicki are retired and I’m not
sure how Nicki keeps her sanity with Bob there 24/7 (just kidding).
We are very excited for what lies ahead for Region E and it’s Members. Bob & Nicki along with their Team
have a great vision for the future of Region E and want you all to join them on the ride. They can be
reached at fowkesrf@grics.net. They are ALL about Fun, so please again join the Beeman’s and the Garris’s in welcoming Bob & Nicki Fowkes as the new Region E Directors.
Thank You & Ride Safe

PARTICIPATION
PROGRAM TO RUN AGAIN IN 2016 IN ILLINOIS
This is a participation program to get Chapters to visit other Chapter’s Events and promote fun and
fellowship throughout Illinois. We are hoping many chapters will participate in this fun and easy program. Plus you
can win some money for your chapter. Check out the District Web Site for full details and rules which are few. It will
run January 1st - December 31, 2016.
It is made to take into consideration those that still participate but cannot ride. The goal is to get more out
visiting the other chapters and chapter events. There is no limit as to how many other chapter meetings or
gatherings they can attend. Even if they only attend their neighbors they will help boost that
neighbors attendance, 50/50 and door prizes. The winner will be announced at the 2017
Winter Warm Up.
