SWINE Viterra Double ExpellerPressed Canola Meal for Swine Protein and an Energy Feed Ingredient What is Double Expeller-Pressed Canola Meal? Viterra Canola Processing uses a mechanical crushing process that is termed double expeller-pressed. The seed is pressed twice to extract oil rather than using solvent extraction to extract the residual oil from the first press meal. The expellerpressed canola meal has a higher oil content which can range from 9-11% and therefore has higher metabolizable, digestible and net energy content than traditional pre-press solvent extracted canola meal. SOME KEY FEATURES OF VITERRA CANOLA MEAL PRACTICAL USE OF VITERRA CANOLA MEAL IN SWINE FEEDS Viterra canola meal contains approximately 11% oil, compared to 3% in conventional canola meal. This extra energy results in approximately 20% more bio-available energy for animals, making canola meal one of the highest energy protein ingredients available. The high energy in Viterra Canola Meal provide value in growing swine and lactating sow feeds. Take special note of the Net Energy content of Viterra canola meal (2150 kcal/kg as is). This is higher than other commonly used protein sources for swine, such as; soybean meal, meat meal and distillers grains. Viterra canola meal contains 97% dry matter (compared to 88%-90% dry matter for conventional canola meal), meaning that you are paying for nutrients, not water. This provides some flexibility to feed formulators who are working with some higher moisture feed ingredients. Also, even with the higher oil content, Viterra canola meal contains almost as much protein as conventional canola meal on an as is basis. The additional essential fatty acids will also be a feature of interest in lactating sow feeds in order to improve the fatty acid profile of the sow’s milk. Canola meal is known for its excellent amino acid balance, with especially high levels of methionine plus cystine and histidine. Viterra canola meal has the same amino acid balance, with a slightly higher digestibility than conventional canola meal. Viterra canola meal does not undergo the same toasting that conventional canola meal undergoes. Since no solvents are used, no steam processing is required. Viterra canola meal contains high levels of essential fatty acids, specially linoleic acid. This means that adding linoleic acid (in the form of extra oil) is not usually required when using Viterra canola meal. VITERRA CANOLA MEAL – BOTH A PROTEIN AND AN ENERGY FEED INGREDIENT Viterra Canola Meal is a high quality feed protein source which is also an excellent energy source. - Suitable for feeding to all animals - Excellent amino acid balance - Its high oil content gives it one of the highest energy contents of all feed protein ingredients Nutrient composition of conventional (solvent) canola meal, Viterra’s canola meal and soybean meal Nutrient, as is basis Canola Meal Viterra’s Canola Meal Soybean Meal Dry Matter, % 89 97 90 Crude Protein, % 36 36 47 Crude Oil, % 3 11 1.4 Crude Fibre, % 11 11 3.4 Ash, % 7 7 6 Calcium, % 0.68 0.68 0.20 Phosphorus, % 1.17 1.17 0.65 Available Phosphorus, % 0.40 0.40 0.20 Salt, % 0.10 0.20 0.10 Sodium, % 0.03 0.09 0.04 Chlorine, % 0.03 0.09 0.04 Swine DE, kcal/kg 3100 3600 3685 Swine ME, kcal/kg 2900 3300 3380 Swine NE, kcal/kg 1750 2150 2020 ADF, % 19 19 5 NDF, % 29 29 9 Lysine, % 2.00 2.00 3.15 Swine digest lys, % 1.50 1.53 2.65 Methionine, % 0.74 0.74 0.67 Swine digest met, % 0.64 0.65 0.61 Methionine + Cystine, % 1.60 1.60 1.49 Swine digest met + cys, % 1.36 1.39 1.22 Threonine, % 1.58 1.58 2.0 Swine digest thr, % 1.19 1.21 1.54 Tryptophan, % 0.48 0.48 0.74 Swine digest trp, % 0.38 0.38 0.67 Linoleic acid, % 0.6 2.1 0.4 Energy and amino acid digestibility values for Viterra Canola Meal are derived from research at the University of Manitoba (Woyengo et al. 2010 J.
