Check it out at worldmarksp.com/education Spring is a unique season. Speaking of learning, retired journalist and WorldMark South Pacific Club Owner, Don Talbot, learned that Fiji has been on the receiving end of more than its share of bad publicity in the wake of April’s political upheaval. Having recently returned from a comprehensive tour of the island paradise, Don felt compelled to put pen to paper and do his bit to set the record straight and help put the island’s flagging tourism back on its feet. Find out what Don had to say on page five’s News. Not just because it is a time of freshness and life, but because of what it does to people. It moves, motivates and invigorates them like no other season. This year, it seems, this phenomenon is more noticeable than ever. Maybe it’s something to do with the fact that we may have seen the worst of the global financial crisis, swine flu and the end of the financial year (fingers-crossed)! Maybe it’s because many of us are now, once again, getting up after the sun and getting home before it sets! Or maybe the spring in everyone’s step is simply the excitement of the school, festive and summer holidays to come? As WorldMark South Pacific Club Owners, you certainly have lots to look forward to! To begin with, understanding, using, and enjoying your Ownership is now easier than ever thanks to Owner Education online. With the latest information on everything there is to know about your Ownership, plus nine brand new downloadable DIY Sessions, it’s bound to have the answer to your trickiest WorldMark South Pacific Club questions! And if it doesn’t, it will tell you where to go to find them. We had a wonderful time, visiting many of the Margaret River wineries, eating at both establishments, and visiting a multitude of interesting places such as Rottnest Island, New Norcia, Freemantle and York. I wanted to express our pleasure at the outstanding level of service we received from all Wyndham [Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific] staff. They were all friendly, knowledgeable and organised. As total newcomers to the areas, we were able to access every attraction we desired. Their local knowledge and their advice on local transport was invaluable. On our return each day, it was an enormous pleasure to enjoy “happy hour”, with the staff photo comp This year we’re looking for your favourite holiday snapshots! Pictured here is Charles Rabakewa, one of WorldMark South Pacific Club by Wyndham Denarau Island’s resident hat weavers, snapped ‘in action’ by Matthew and Wendy Edwards. “This photo is of one staff member (there were so many) who contributed to making our holiday so memorable. My son Jake and Charles became good friends and he will treasure the memories and the hat forever”. Congratulations Matthew, Wendy and Jake. Your $50 cheque is on its way! Our Outram unit was also more than adequate for our needs. Having travelled north for a few days, we returned earlier than expected to Perth and The Outram - on the off chance there may be a room. No problem! Sarah was able to organise something for us on the spot - fantastic service! We have been Owners since September 2003, and have visited many [WorldMark South Pacific Club] establishments and associated resorts - but this little holiday has topped them all. Congratulations on a job well done. See page 2 for details. We have just returned from our ninth visit to Fiji. It was our third time at WorldMark [Resort Denarau Island]. The final “Isa Lei” was the most moving and meaningful version we had ever heard. As usual, the exemplary service from WorldMark Resort Denarau Island staff left us in a relaxed mood and our friends loved the resort too. I cannot recommend it more highly. A most wonderful time was had when we all drove to Sigatoka for a “Sigatoka River Safari” - a first for us all. Being the senior member of the group I was afforded “Chief” status and my word was law for the trip. Captain “Jack Sparra” was very knowledgeable about the river and had a very dry sense of humour. I was enjoying being Chief and it became more apparent when we reached Vunarewa Village, the destination for the day. After a tour of the village, we were seated under a temporary covered area - me in the pride of place as Chief. We were treated to a welcome ceremony and song by the villagers, then received a type of lei and had talcum powder wiped on our faces. Then came the traditional Kava ceremony. Being Chief, I was honoured with the first turn, followed by the village chief and then everyone received some. We were then treated to a magnificent feast of tropical fruits, more Kava – my tongue was numb for quite some time dancing and music until we had to leave. Ian & Janis Wilson My wife and I and two of our friends recently spent three nights at Leisure Inn Pokolbin Hill [WorldMark South Pacific Club by Wyndham Pokolbin Hill] in the Hunter Valley. We had a great time at the wineries, tasting some great wines. Our stay was really topped off by the wonderful accommodation and the friendly staff of this great place. We stayed there about four years ago and again were not disappointed. Barry Henry news FAIR GO FOR FIJI A trip to WorldMark South Pacific Club by Wyndham Denarau Island leaves a lasting impression for all who are fortunate enough to experience it. But for retired Owner and journalist, Don Talbot, his trip to Fiji will be remembered for so much more. Despite his friends and family’s warning of: “It’s not safe and there will be military everywhere,” Don and his family stuck with their plans and were pleasantly surprised by what they found. “We headed off along dusty roads, through villages, picking up students on their way to class, and on other days we ventured to villages off the tourist map”. Amongst Don’s many eye-opening experiences was an audience with a village chief. ‘He told us “he was disappointed how the overseas media had portrayed what had happened politically in Fiji. We would all like to see early elections” the village chief said. “However you have to look at the good things that Prime Minister (Commodore Vorege Bainimarama) is doing.” While the Prime Minister’s achievements include an earlier retirement age, better pensions, greater employment opportunities and the removal of many racial barriers, “the families we met showed little interest in the political scene” but rather, “were more interested in getting adequate meals and jobs,” Don said. “In seven days of travel on country roads and through towns, we never saw one soldier,” reports Don. “Yet because of media stories, the global recession and the impact of the January floods, visitor arrivals in Fiji fell 27.8% in the first two months of this year.” Having returned from his holiday, Don was keen to set the record straight by putting pen to paper for his local Toowoomba rag, ‘The Chronicle’. “Fiji is an interesting and intriguing destination … with such a wide culture and history,” said Don. “We never felt unsafe during our travels.” In fact, “our holiday had been better than the two previous spells on the island. Our travel agent is delighted that it won’t be the last time we visit.” PRIVILEGES BY WYNDHAM OWNER EDUCATION WorldMark South Pacific Club is proud to announce the launch of online Owner Education! From ancient ruins to medieval cathedrals and baroque palaces, Europe is bursting at the seams with glorious sights to gladden the heart of history buffs. ENGLAND ITALY FRANCE Europe’s historic sights don’t have to be stuffy. In England, you can be scared silly on a guided tour of Warwick Castle, visit a top-class motoring museum at Beaulieu, and go on safari at Woburn Abbey. For a taste of royal history, Windsor Castle and Hampton Court are a must, while Blenheim Palace is a mind-boggling statement of aristocratic wealth. But it isn’t all about magnificence: the outstanding open-air museum at Beamish near Durham relates the lives of Victorian schoolmasters, miners and doctors. In Italy, history is all around: attend mass at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, drift in a gondola through Venice and walk the Roman streets of Pompeii. Brilliant Greek temples sit among almond orchards in Sicily, and Lecce swoons with baroque architecture. Then there’s the Renaissance, which left churches filled with frescoes, palaces stuffed with statues, and museums with enough artworks to give you a permanently slack jaw. Incredible history coupled with great coffee, chic shopping and sunshine – what’s not to like about Italy? France is another history-lovers dream, from the romantic châteaux of the Loire Valley to the palaces of Paris. For more recent history with an Australian connection, head to Normandy for the story of the D-Day landings near Bayeux, Arromanches and at Omaha Beach. Then visit the mass graveyards at Pozières, Ypres and Fromelles, with their clipped lawns and rows of white headstones. The Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux is a reminder that, while not all history is pretty, it can move us in unexpected ways. Did you know that Sydney was rated as one of the top ten tourist destinations in the world? According to the 2008 Reader’s Choice Awards published 8 I love you but … by Condé Nast Traveler magazine, not only was Sydney voted one of the best cities to visit in 2008, by travellers across the globe, it appears Sydney scored top marks for ambience, culture, attractions, restaurants, lodging, shopping and of course, friendliness. Grab a few picnic pieces from a deli nearby – you’re sure to find a few in your travels – and head to the picturesque ‘Avenue of Figs’ in Hyde Park. What a day! The New South Wales capital is certainly earning its place as one of the best cities in the world. Now, to satisfy the ‘fresh air and green pastures’ lover, let’s head up to the Hunter Valley … Spring in the Hunter Valley: Dawns are still slightly misty, giving way to mild, sunny days that are gradually growing warmer. Travellers to the Hunter Valley come to indulge in what the region is most famous for – the exceptional wines, which have a distinct Hunter Valley flavour. Choose from a vast array of wineries, touring and tasting until the day’s end. And what’s even better, many wineries include exquisite restaurants showcasing local produce in gourmet dishes. So you can enjoy superb wines and then sit back to a delicious meal with a view of acres of rolling vineyards, picturesque lakes, and stunning mountains in the distance. Plus, a trip to the country at this time of year has another advantage. You can either spend lazy days breathing-in the fresh air and open vineyards, or if you wish, get involved in some of the delightful events and festivals that the Hunter Valley puts on for tourists and locals. In September, there are events like the Festival of Flowers – a truly visual and sensory experience that everyone can appreciate. And for lovers of golf, the Stonehurst Vineyard Cross Country Golf Classic is an annual challenge for pros and beginners alike, with all the proceeds going to Camp Quality. After a hard day (well, not really) golfing and wine tasting, simply take a moment to forget the ‘real world’ and appreciate the Hunter Valley for all its worth, watching the sun set over a landscape that is entirely breathtaking. Yes, it’s the farm life for some, but for others, the city lights beckon. Forget the argument and do it all – there are no limits to your idea of the perfect holiday. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned thrill seeker, gorges and crags in this part of Australia are just about unbeatable. Tasmania is quite simply a onestop shop for the adventurer. So don’t delay any longer, take a holiday and do something you can boast about when you get home. Elizabeth Vega Executive Housekeeper, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Sydney She was hard to get a hold of. In fact, she answered the phone a little breathless. “I’ve been training staff all day, and only just got into the office,” she says. Introducing our bubbly - and busy Executive Housekeeper from Sydney, Elizabeth Vega. There’s a lot to do as a Housekeeper for our Sydney resort, but Elizabeth keeps on top of it all. “I always need to anticipate the day ahead. In the mornings I allocate tasks, do the paper work and brief my Room Attendants. I must always keep the relevant people updated so we all know what to expect for the day and what to be ready for.” And Elizabeth has to be ready for just about anything. Owners and guests often have plenty of questions – whether it’s directions they are after, more towels they need, or even questions regarding their Ownership, Elizabeth almost always has an answer. After spending two years with us, it’s no wonder she knows what she’s talking about. The fact that she has spent much of her career working in hospitality and customer service probably doesn’t hurt either. “I graduated in Hong Kong and spent several years there working in hospitality. I wanted a change in direction so I took a job working in Customer Service for Cathay Pacific (airline). Then Australia called and my husband and I moved!” Working for Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific was Elizabeth’s first experience with Vacation Ownership. The challenge, she says, is keeping the benchmark high. “Working in Vacation Ownership is a lot different. There are high expectations and you have to meet those expectations. It’s great because I get to talk to Owners directly and they tell me what’s good, what they would like to see for the future – all those things. I learn a lot in the process and I become friends with Owners.” Not only does Elizabeth make sure the team is up to speed with everything Owners may need, she keeps the atmosphere positive with her tireless assistance and cheerful attitude. 18 15 minutes with… “I really enjoy working with my colleagues and try not to have too many ‘serious’ briefings. I also encourage everyone to help each other out – if you see something that needs to be done, don’t allocate it to someone else, just do it! And if there are Owners on the floor, always be attentive to their needs and go out of your way to assist them. We’re a team.” Elizabeth even entered the team into the ‘Housekeeping Olympics’ (yes there is such a thing), with great performances all round. “It’s great because I get to talk to Owners directly and they tell me what’s good, what they would like to see for the future …” “There are all sorts of competitions in the Housekeeping Olympics: toilet paper mummy wrapping, mopping relays, scrubbing disc throws … and next year, we’re determined to take out First Place!” With such a great team vibe and huge amounts of enthusiasm, it couldn’t get any better for our Sydney folk - until you discover Elizabeth’s husband is a pastry chef. That’s right, the team are regularly treated to delicious desserts and treats by Elizabeth’s talented ‘other half’. Very lucky indeed! There are theories that it was once located in the Persian Gulf. Some argue Africa, others claim the Middle East. Well, we’re convinced we know exactly where the Garden of Eden was – and it’s closer than you think. It’s a secret we’ve known for years. But travellers from around the world are discovering this heavenly region at an evergrowing rate, happily boasting about its exquisite natural wonders, its near-perfect conditions, and the utter beauty of the place. Tasmania – formally the Garden of Eden. (Please note, we have no actual proof of this, but once there, you will no doubt agree!) It all adds up: Lush gardens to walk through, pristine lakes and rivers to swim in, majestic mountains to climb, and evidently, apples to be picked. Yes, if it’s earthly delights you’re looking for, then look no further than Tasmania. Upon entering this otherworldly place, you will first notice that Tasmania has every kind of landscape, for every kind of person. It’s as if Mother Nature decided to put all of her best in one spot. You will find yourself convinced that you have never seen greener fields, clearer rivers, or picture-perfect mountains. Tasmania seems untouched by the outside world - like you are the very first to step foot on its shores. In this part of the world, it’s easy to get back to basics and forget everything else. Take a journey along the beach, either on foot or on horseback. Head to a farm to select your favourite season’s fruit. Stroll through near-endless vineyards. Dip your feet into cool springs. Trek through wilderness, climb rocky summits and look beyond the ocean to the horizon ahead. Simply breathe in the clean air. But what would paradise be without a few miraculous experiences? Walk amongst the treetops at Tahune, on the edge of the South West Wilderness. This 600 metre-long walkway reaches 48 metres above the ground, giving you a view of the forested mountains beyond and the convergence of the Huon and Picton Rivers. Or see Tasmania from the top of the 1270 metre summit of Mt. Wellington, and be rewarded with the 360 degree panorama that covers the city, the Derwent River, Tasman Peninsula and the mountain peaks in the distance. Tour the Central Highlands and stand on the shores of the Great Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in Australia. Throughout your travels you may stumble upon historic castles, hidden caves and secluded forests, with nothing but sunfiltered light through the trees to keep you company. “It’s as if Mother Nature decided to put all of her best in one spot. ” Rest assured, there is a place for you in this paradise. Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Seven Mile Beach, located in an area that remains largely untouched by the outside world and adjacent to protected national parklands, is awaiting your arrival. You have the best of Tasmania’s wilderness all around you, with the convenience of Hobart close by. What’s more, you will get to experience Seven Mile Beach at its recently renovated finest, with superior Presidential Suites and superb Penthouse Apartments now available.
