CLASSES
This school year, 1965-66, will b e remembered always by the graduating
senior class, mostly because it is their last at SHSHS. It did prove successful
as they worked hard to win the Carol Contest for the second year. Graduation
is a sad time as they have to part from their classmates and school, but it is only
an introduction to the future.
This year meant responsibility, co-operation, and work for the juniors as
they prepared for the Junior Prom. Since it is th e highlight of the social season,
the work put into the prom is truly worthwhile.
For the sophomores, it was a year of learning, as they became acquainted
with the annuel functions of the high school and will make the following two
years in the senior high more meaningful and snccessful for them.

MEMORIES
Graduation is sighs and laughter
Mingled liberally with tears,
Lingering memories of one's sharing
Life with classmates through the years.
Graduation is termination
Of one big phase of work and fun ,
A milestone passed, new things begun.
Graduation is excitement
Speeches, farewells and applause,
Diplomas and a mortar board . ..
The gate to pathways unexplored.
Graduation is an end,
But also a beginning ...
The start of all the dreams
That every gradaute is spinning.

Clubs and organizations play a very important role in the success of a
school year. As a member of a club, a student develops responsibility, loyalty,
and leadership ability as well as working hard to see creative ideas materialize.
The experiences gained in a school club have a great effect in your years
ahead and give the students some of the happiest me mories of high school
life.

The 1965 football season proved to be a very rewarding one
for me as footb all coach. Although om record was only 4 "vins and
5 losses, I felt that our team p erformed very capably in every game
and were a group dedicated to the high standards of the game.
As this was my last year as head football coach, I hope that we
continue to have the high caliber of young men representing St.
H elens and continue to have the support of the students in our
football program.

J. V. Football
The season for the J.V.'s could not be considered successful from
the standpoint of winns and losses; however, there were a few individuals that developed quite well.
A number of sophomores and juniors that would normally play
J.V. were put on the varsity b ecause of the lack of depth in personnel
that we had this year. With these ball players on the J.V.'s the overall
team record would have been very impressive.
Paul Krenz and Randy Loe were very impressive toward the end
of the season. These two, along with several others, should bolster the
varsity next year, which has a large group of under classmen returning.
The team spirit and morale was very good throughout the season
which is a h·ibute to any team, particularly on e which has a losing
season.

BASKETBALL
rt one measu res th e success of a season by wins and losses, th e 1963-66
ln s 1<etball season was not too successful for th e St. H elens Senior High Sch ool.
The Lions ended the season with eight wins and fourteen losses, but tw.:> oi
th e d efeats were in overtimes and all except four of the setb:lCks were not
decided until th e fin al seconds of the ga me. Indications of a brigh ter futu•·c
by the Lions' three wins in th eir last four games and by th e fact th ::t nrny
times this p 1st se:tson th e starting lineup consisted of fi ve underclassm en.
The Lions .>tarted the 196 3-66 seas:m with no returning st:nt crs and
actually only one player with varsity experience. This will not be th e cas J
,,·ith next ye:tr s S::J.uad which will have Ken Smith, Jim Rensch, Dan Oukrop.
Gar Piepkorn , Gordon Olson, and Frank Wilson returning with startin g exp erience and many minutes of game action under their belts.
Not enough can be said about th e desire and attitudes of this yea r·s
Seniors. Even though we suffered throu gh many defeats and often times
they were not playing as much as th ~y would lnve liked, these Seniors al.vays
showed th e utm ost desire and at times each did play some very fin e ball. vVe
will certainly miss the example they have set and the effort they put forth this
past season. Seniors Dean Skarberg ( Captain and Honorable Mention All

J. Y. Basketball
Individual improvement and the developmen to£ a very good
team attitude would have to be considered as high points of the
basketball season for the Junior Varsity.
The J.V.'s started out the season very sh·ong by winning their
first six ball games, but then hit somewhat of a slump after losing
two of the outstanding sophomores to the Varsity. Towards the
end of the season the young Lions showed remarkable improvement by b eating three teams in a row which had early in the season
defeated them.
A season record of 12 wins and 12 losses, which included 2
sophomore games, was recorded by the J.V.'s for a .500 season
average which is very respectable.
Individuals who showed promise as varsity contenders for
next year were Mike Petersen, high scorer on the team; Ron McCarter and Ray Ritenour, both very fine defensive ball players; and
Mike Howard, who improved tremendously in the scoring and
rebounding departments toward the close of the season.
With the development of the J.V.'s and the very fine group of
sophomores and juniors on the Varsity this year, it is felt that St.
H elens' hopes in basketball could be much brighter in the next
two years.

As of this writing, the Lions baseball team is enjoying its best season
in years. W e now stand with a record of 14 wins and 5 losses on the
season; 4 wins and 4 lo3ses in League, only one game out of first p lace.
The TYV L eague is very strong this year; only one game separates the
first eight teams. A break one way or the oth er could mean the differen:::e b etween first place and fourth.
O utstanding for us h as b een our pitchin g staff, wt ih three pitche1·s
allowin g fewer than two earned runs p er game. Jim Rensch has a re : ord
of 4-3 and an E.R.A. of 1.51; Sterling W hippl e is 4-2 and an E. R.A. of
1.89; Sophomore Gary Piepkorn stands at 4-0 and his E.H..A. is .276.
COACH BURR
We have lost five games on the season by a com bined total of nin e
runs. OuT bi g concern then, obviously, h a sheen our hitting. We feel
that in recent games our hitting has b egun to imp>·ove to the point that
these boys feel th ey can win the Championship or at least be in the
running until the final out of th e season. Regardless of what may happen, it has been a very go d year.

next year.
Graduating seniors are Bob Cade ( Captain ), D ean Broders,

EVENTS
The social events at SHSHS followed the usual pattern this year.
On November 5, Linda Johnson was crowned Homecoming Queen and
reigned over the Homecoming game and dance.
With the coming of Christmas and all its activities also came Queen
Jacque who reigned over the Winter Ball.
Next came the Sweetheart's Ball at which Janice Crawford and Sterling
Whipple were crowned King and Queen of H earts.
The last big event of the year and the most remembered by the graduating seniors is the Junior Prom; this year its colorful decorations followed the
theme of "Carousel of Colors." Queen Jill Lathers reigned over the dance.
