Dedication
A soft, slightly southern accent--an easygo ing air of nonchalance--a constant chivalry and
on ever-flowing endless source of anecdotes. But
underneath this calm surface stirs the machinery
that sets in motion the teacher, the electrician,
the carpenter, the photographer and the inveterate traveler.
For twenty-six years the halls of St. Helens
have echoed the footsteps of Major Ragland as
he pursued his many duties as teacher of geometry, physics, bookkeeping, general science, as
Audio-visual coordinator for the District, and as
annual adviser for close to a quarter of a century.
To this son of old Mo., this tradition on
wheels, we dedicate the 1970 edition of The
Lion.

Seated: Mrs . Margaret Stansbury, deputy clerk; Mrs . Betty Soule, chairman of board; George Kimmel,
member of boa<d. Standing: Harold Olsen, attorney; George E. Muehleck, member of board; Goyne
R. Moxness, member of board; Wallace E. Lambert, member of board.
Each year at the end of school our thoughts turn to the graduating seniors.
The class of 1970 faces many new and unknown challenges. No one can accurately forecast the future, but one thing is for certain; life as you know it
at the beginning of the 1970's will only remotely resemble life at the close of
this decade. For those students who have sacrificed to achieve their educational goals, adjustments to future events should come more easily. We hope
you have prepared well.
The opportunity to gain material success is as great as it has ever been.
But success cannot be measured in material terms alone. Happiness, health,
the spirit of giving and helping others must be included in the real meaning of
success.
It is our hope that each and every member of this class will be successful
as the years go by. Best wishes to the members of the class of 1970 from your
fellow students, teachers, and many friends.

Student Council
After being elected Associated StudeAt Body Officers of our
school in May of 1969, our predecessors challenged us to solve the
problems with which our school was faced. Many problems still rema in to be solved but we hope the following officers continue the
work past and present members have at least begun to answer.
Jim and I, as vice-president and president, would like to issue a
vote of thanks to Mr. Stewart, our adviser, for a fine job well done.
We expect that next year's officers will work as closely together as
we have and will attempt to split the obligations, giving the vicepresident a more responsible role. We feel this was one of our most
important goals.
Respectfully
Steve Adkins, A.S.B . president

"Time is going so fast now that I wish I could
stop it to live twice the lost few weeks. I hove
learned much about myself by being among you,
but more than this discovery I hove met you, I

The end of a happy experience is always very

The fall brought the Creed Speaking Contest and the Parliamentary Procedure Contest. They worked on a
new constitution and a program of work. With spring came mare contests, such as Shop Skills, Farm Management, and the State Convention .
The 1969-70 officers were Tom Weber, president; Wendel Gump, vice president; Gary Vocana, secretary;

Burt Walrod. Juniors are Chris Knudsen, Jack Wi II ard, Ed Streh Iou, Harold Neveau , and Craig Sig Ier. Sophomores are Dan Durbin, John Heller, Gary Barger, Jerry Fast, Jim Walters, Dave Nickelson, Tim Wilson, and

Varsity Baseball
The 1970 Baseball team is off to on exceptionally fine start. The record to date shows 7 wins aga inst only
one loss. This record has been achieved through hard work , dedication , and a f ine team sp ir it. If we con con t inue
on into our league competi t ion with this hustle and sp iri t we will most certainly establ i sh ou rselves as a ser ious
contender.
The backbone of the club thus for has been our p itch ing staff which is headed by Mart in Doherty and Tom Sittingdown. Doherty has a record of 3 wins and 0 losses and on ERA of .529; Tom has 2-0 and on ERA of . 473 .
They must cont inue· to be consistent on the mound if we ore to be successful.
At the plate the team i s led by Jim Minyard who is hitting on even .500 . He i s followed closely by Mart in
Doherty and Stan Mendenhall.
If our younger players con improve as we start into our league schedule we look for a fi ne year.

This year's Carol Contest was probably the mast beautiful and ex·

Carol Contest
but I would have hated to be in the position of the judges, for it was
a difficult decision. I thank the Girls League for such a fine proprogram.

SOPHOMORE YEAR
JUNIOR YEAR
As Sophomores the class of 70's first competitive event came at homecoming . Chicken wire,
tissue paper and Sophomores filled the Sherlock
barn as we decorated our float . Unfortunately we
decorated ourselves into third place . We consoled
ourselves in the first of a long line of failures by
We started au' Junior Year with a big victoryfirst place during Homecoming Week . We put on a
brilliant skit featuring a mob scene at the end.
•Participation was our goal. •
As Juniors we really went all out for the Carol
Contest with flashlights, fanfares, angels, and the
indispensable white collar.
Our Prom theme was Tahitian Holiday . Hammers pounded and paint flew as the Junior Class
reminding each other,
"It's
not whether you win or
lose, it's how you play the game. •
We were saved from the usual sophomore embar-
rassment at Christmas time, when the Christmas

Then there was the Biology field trip - 150
Sophomores sliding over the rocks at Boiler Bay .
The Sophomores put men on the varsity football ,
basketball, swimming, wrestling, baseball, and
track squads .
And so we survived our first year at high school
-one year of Bioi.>gy notebooks, sitting in the balcony, and eating on the last lunch bell.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be,
For my unconquerable sou I.
SENIOR YEAR
One of the most pleasant events of our Senior
year was the arrival of Anne Botrel, our foreign ex·
change student from France .
As the strains of • Angels We Have Heard on
High" filled the halls, we prepared for the Carol
Contest. Again we seemed to fall short. We took
2nd place, but the Christmas spirit prevailed during
the whole month of December.
Seniors look forward to graduation but also look
back on the happy moments during three of the most
important years of our
I ives .
•But it is time to go, and I must go :
And what we thought, and silenced,
none shall know."
Conrad Aiken

Class motto: "Today is the first day
of the rest of our lives . •
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance.
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
... William Ernest Henley
