Erie Street | Lakefront Festival of Art 2016 | M 5 SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION WELCOME W Michael King and Kate Pertzsch 2016 Lakefront Festival of Art Co-Chairs CONTENTS Photography by Matt Haas elcome to the 2016 Lakefront Festival of Art, long recognized as one of the best juried art festivals in the country. With more than 170 incredible artists located on the festival grounds and in the Museum, there is sure to be something everyone will love. The poster artist is Diane French, who has created a beautiful featured artwork this year using only dry pigments. Make sure to stop by and meet her during your visit and check out the promotional items available for sale to commemorate the festival. This is an exciting year for the festival and for the Museum. This year we will welcome the one millionth art lover to the Lakefront Festival of Art, an amazing milestone that has allowed Friends of Art to provide support to the Museum since the very first Lakefront Festival of Art back in 1962. In addition, the yearlong renovation and reinstallation of the Museum’s Collection Galleries are complete, and if you have not had a chance to walk through the renovated space and take in the breathtaking view of the lake from the Museum’s new addition, we highly recommend doing so. In addition to the art, do not miss the other activities and events that are part of the festival. For families we have the ever-popular PNC Children’s Experience and children’s stage with some great hands-on art projects for children of all ages. Help us complete a one-of-a-kind “ crowd-sourced” art project on the south end of the grounds. Climb our rock wall, take your picture with the Calatrava and Lake Michigan in the background with our giant picture frame, relax in our expanded beer gardens at both beer tents and in the wine garden on the terrace, or complete your own piece of artwork at the paint and pour studio. The festival would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors and the hard work and dedication of the hundreds of volunteers needed to put on an event of this size. We thank all of you for making the Lakefront Festival of Art possible. Enjoy your visit with us this weekend and thank you for supporting the arts. » LFOA 2016 08 Sponsors 10 Admission and Information 10 Advance Ticket Outlets 12 Festival Activities and Amenities 13 Main Stage and Performing Arts Schedule 14 Poster Artist Diane French: Channeling Universal Love 16 Looking Up: Under the Wings 18 Map 20 Artist by Name 20 Artist by Booth 24 Artist by Medium Festival Chairs: Kate Pertzsch, Mike King; Festival Chairs Elect: Catherine Faught Pollard, Christy Metcalf; Friends of Art: Kim Muench; Admissions: Steve Horner, Patrick Stanly; Advance Tickets: Christy Metcalf, Scott Gray; Artists: Bernice Austin, Julia DeCicco, Kim Muench; Buildings and Grounds: Mark Muench, Tom Dornoff, Ed Hanrahan; Children’s Art: Linda Boxill, Ann Krueger, John Krueger; Corporate: Kathy Emery; Finance: Danielle Brinkman, Mike King, Amy Vogt, Nancy Munroe; Food and Beverage: Nate Kraucunas, Martha Moore, Richard Gareis; Information: Deborah Fabritz, Laura Weber; Legal: Catherine Faught Pollard; Performing Arts: Kaye Giese, Andrew Hunn; Poster: Nancy Munroe; Promotions: Annette Melcher, Deborah Gerke; Public Relations: Mary Jessen; Sculpture Garden: Bob Wolf; Silent Auction: Erin McGurty, Katharine Perella, Ed Sturkey; Social: Rebecca Nault, Talea Lund; VIP First Look: Lynn Cornwell, Linda Koenig; Volunteers: Michelle Dwyer, Pam Schaefer; Wine Garden: Chris Fenske, Callan Kamm. Born on the south side of Chicago, French spent her high school years visiting the city’s art galleries. “They required us to, on our own, take the train downtown and write about 10 galleries,” says French of her teachers. “That was my first and most powerful experience with contemporary artists and what was happening in the current world of art. It was more than inspirational. It opened the door to what art really was. Not in a historical sense, but in a contemporary, relevant sense.” The experience led French to major in arts education, and she worked as an art teacher in Michigan before relocating to La Crosse in 1991. A young mother at the time, she decided to forgo teaching and instead pursue her craft professionally. Her first move? Exhibiting at an outdoor art show just four blocks from her home. “I showed up with three raw pegboards and a lawn chair,” French remembers. “I hung the work I could fit (on the boards), and I put the rest on the ground.” Rain followed, but the inclement weather did little to deter from her success. “I got Best of Show, and I sold so much work that the lightbulb went off — ‘What about these art shows?’” French wrote to the Wisconsin Arts Board, requesting a directory of art shows throughout the state, and in 1993, she applied (and was admitted) to exhibit at the Lakefront Festival of Art. “I was totally unprepared for what it was,” French says. “I showed up, again, with raw pegboard, a lawn chair and a sheet of plastic. There was a goldsmith from New York on one side (of my booth), and a high-end photographer, building gray gallery walls for his display, on the other side. And there I was with my not-even-painted pegboard and lawn chair.” Later that night, French remembers seeking advice from other exhibitors. “One guy said, ‘Hang it clean like a gallery, have nothing on the ground, use a tall chair, and you have to get lights,’” she recalls. But those subtleties proved insignificant, as her true talent—the artwork—spoke for itself. “I then told him how much I had sold that day, and he said, ‘Forget everything I told you and do whatever you want!’” adds French with a laugh. Now based in St. Augustine, Fla., French’s artistic style has evolved over the years. “I’m very tactful as an artist, so the mediums I prefer have a lot of making things physically with your hands,” she explains. “I was a weaver—weaving was my studio specialty as an undergraduate student, and then, over the next 10 years, I wanted to be a printmaker. I was moving a lot and couldn’t figure out how to have a press, so I started to work with graphite powder, rubbing it into printmaking paper by hand and lifting it out with an eraser.” Fifteen years later, she switched to dry pigments after the absence of pastel colors in graphite powders became unsatisfying. “Working with dry pigments is immensely more complicated than working with graphite powder,” French cautions. “You need to know the innate characteristic of the pigments. Some are coarse, some are fine, some are opaque, some are translucent, some have weight, and others are relatively airborne.” The challenge is one French seems to conquer with ease, producing work that exudes a sense of fluidity and warmth. As one of 11 children (“I had an amazing childhood, where we all felt like we were the only child,” she says), it’s clear that feeling — one of unconditional love — regularly inspires her work. “I’m always striving to capture a feeling of beauty, love and grace,” French says. “When I go into the studio, sometimes I’m planning on doing a sky, but being present in the moment, I may have some huge, open love feeling percolating to the top and I have to imply a human form. ... Hopefully, I’m just channeling universal love, no matter what the subject.” That running theme is represented throughout her collection for the Lakefront Festival of Art, “Without a Struggle.” “I’m trying to capture how to move toward what you aspire to and capture your dream without a struggle,” explains French, noting that its featured piece, “Capture Your Dream,” best represents the collection. “With that particular piece, I’m trying to imply that the figures are moving together toward their aspirations. The space between them is a heart, and within the heart is a small glow, which represents the energy they share.” French says being named the festival’s Poster Artist is a “great honor,” and she is looking forward to returning to Milwaukee this June. LANGE W hile the Lakefront Festival of Art features many established artists every year, it’s nurturing young talent too. The new, aptly titled Under the Wings mentorship program teaches art students from local universities and adults early in their art careers about the business of being an artist. Students in the program participate in the festival and its preparation over the course of two years. “In the first year, students are shadowing, apprenticing, learning,” says Milwaukee Art Museum Director of Special Events Krista Renfrew, whose duties include overseeing the festival. “In the second year, they implement what they learned and showcase and sell their work at the festival.” To help them prepare, the program coaches young artists in marketing and branding themselves, networking, presenting themselves professionally, and transporting their work. “As a creative person it’s really easy to forget about the business end,” says Saraina Adam, a member of the inaugural class of Under the Wings who is studying 2-D mixed media at Carroll University. “I really appreciate how much focus is being placed on teaching the business aspect of being an artist.” And while Under the Wings focuses on the festival experience and what it takes to be a gallery artist, it also connects students with local professionals working in their field of interest. “The people involved have been the best part of the program,” Adam says. “It was a little daunting, the idea of working with so many professionals in the art field, but everyone has been nothing but welcoming, energetic, and supportive.” “I am fortunate to have met many great people in my field,” says Kaivahn Sarkaratpour, another Under the Wings student who is studying design and visual communication at UW-Milwaukee. “They have helped connect me to an even greater community of artists/designers/creatives.” 16 M Up Photography by Robert Colletta Photography UNDER THE WINGS PREPARES STUDENTS FOR THE BUSINESS OF BEING AN ARTIST SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION While Sarkaratpour acknowledges the importance of networking, he sees connecting with people in the community at large as having a greater purpose than simply furthering his own career. “I believe that art has the potential to break down barriers that often divide us and (to) provide a dialogue of shared experiences and common goals,” he explains. “The better we understand one another, the better we can solve issues within our community.” Renfrew echoes the community-building aspect of the program. “It’s neat watching the advisers interact with the next generation and seeing the students respond to them,” she says. “We’re going to do a lot of good together as a team.” After this year’s festival wraps up, Under the Wings will accept applications for its next class. Marietta Ticali 414-801-8028 www.TicaliRealEstate.com TicaliRealEstate@gmail.com www.adampoehlman.com amp.homes@gmail.com “After dealing with a real estate agent who was not focused on my property or enthusiastic about what it had to offer, I was lucky to connect with Adam who was eager and able to market my house to its best advantage. It was a pleasure to work with him. He is straight forward, honest, and willing to offer solutions to any stumbling blocks along the way. I only wish I had signed with him initially. I know I would have seen a “Sold” sign much sooner! My advice is don’t waste time with anyone else!” “Marietta was attentive, caring, detailed, personable, patient and positive. In selling my parents home after 40 years, she knew it was a struggle to have to put our childhood home on the market. Her sensitivity was most appreciated. She was honest about everything and always available when we needed her. If I ever need a realtor again, we will contact Marietta. I have given her name as a referral to several people for when they are ready to buy or sell. I will continue to do so as long as she is a Realtor.” mam.org/lfoa | Lakefront Festival of Art 2016 | M 27 Organized by the Peabody Essex Museum in collaboration with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
