Trans disciplinary Theme – How We Organize Ourselves Central-idea - People can go from one place to another using a transport. An Inquiry into: This is an inquiry into the kinds of transport people use. This is an inquiry into reasons people use different kinds of transport. Key concepts - Form, Function and connection Related concepts - Systems Learning Engagements Children have been learning about the second line of inquiry into the kinds of transport people use. We talked about the air transportation. Children learnt about the form and function of these vehicles such as airplane, helicopter, hot-air balloon, glider and parachute through pictures and audio-video. They were taken a step further by talking about the associated professionals and their services. Such as pilot, co-pilot, air hostess, crew, and ground staff. We also discussed about the required documents such as passport, ticket; airport areas: luggage x-ray, check-in counter, conveyer belt, runway, control tower and hangar. They also learnt about the fuel, take off and landing of the air vehicles. Safety demonstration by crew was shown through a video. Picture talk of the significant details of the airport scene was also done. Children painted the cutouts of air transport vehicles for the class display. A guest speaker- Ms. Rawat, an ex-Airhostess was invited in the class to give in flight safety demonstration . Creating origami planes and flying it too Literacy Phonic sound of letter A and B was revised through an activity on the Interactive Board. The recognition and phonic drill also was done through matching phonic cards. Letter formation of these letters was done on the task sheet. FREE HAND DRAWING Show and Tell activity was carried out with a working model of different vehicles to develop the presentation skills. They told about the form, function and connection of each vehicle. Children amazed us by their performance. Pre-reading skills were enhanced through picture reading. Listening and viewing skills were enhanced through picture books, audio-visuals and Interactive Board. New Vocabulary– Pilot, co-pilot, airhostess, cockpit, conveyer belt, crew and ground staff. Rhymes: I’m a little airplane, My airplane and Flying on an Airplane . Stories : Planes Have Wings ,Dragon who couldn’t breathe out fire and Pony Brushes His Teeth were narrated to them in the class. Library class– Bark George and Little Chicken’s big day were narrated to them. News paper reading is done every morning . Numeracy Numeracy was integrated with the ongoing unit. Speed-fast/slow, distance far/near was done by comparing and showing pictures . Reinforcement of making pattern ABAB was done through a picture card and on the task sheet. ABAB Pattern Playing with shapes Practicing for the Annual Athletic Meet-2014 Music-Students practiced singing of simple ascending and descending scales in two note pattern with nursery rhymes. Students were introduced to new songs “Number Song 1-10” , “Rail gaddi” and “Chuk chuk” in accordance with the current Unit of Inquiry. With best wishes Gauri and Medha
