THIBODAUX BRANCH Libraries and library employees have long been advocates of the freedom to read — the right of free people to think for themselves and make their own decisions about a book and its content without restricting the rights of others. Each year, the American Library Association organizes Banned Books Week, with this year’s celebration to be held from September 24 through October 1. Look for these events at The Thibodaux Branch has planned several events to observe Banned Books Week, from a read-out to a near week-long film festival. RACELAND BRANCH A banned books discussion will The Thibodaux Branch’s Banned Books Club will discuss Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth at 2 p.m. on September 24. See Banned, page 2 Cajun Rollergirls to demo at Raceland Branch Interested in learning more about roller derby — or just seeing it in action? Stop by the Raceland Branch this month as the Cajun Rollergirls demonstrate basic skating and roller derby skills. They will visit the library at 4:30 p.m. on September 28. According to its web site, the Cajun Rollergirls organization seeks to have a positive impact on its skaters and local communities through the expansion of women’s flat-track derby. They are interested in promoting athleticism, ―sportswomanship,‖ teamwork, and volunteerism. For more information, call the library at 537-6875. This event is free and open to the public. Headquarters and all branches of the Lafourche Parish Public Library will be closed on Monday, September 5, in observance of Labor Day. SL Branch to offer new story hour for babies It’s never too soon to begin fostering a love of reading in children. With that in mind, the South Lafourche Branch will begin offering a new story hour intend- ed especially for babies ages 0 to 24 months. fingerplays, and other activities designed specifically for babies. The first of these new story hours will be at 10 a.m. on September 7. The story hour will be held on the first Wednesday of each month.
